ABC’s George Stephanopoulos Grills Michele Bachmann: Will Tea Party ‘Undermine’ GOP Chances?

One day after suggesting that terrorist attacks during Barack Obama’s watch be ” set aside ,” Good Morning America’s George Stephanopoulos grilled Michelle Bachmann, forcing her to respond for every supposed crime of the Tea Party movement. The former Democratic operative wondered if being “more formally aligned with the Tea Party” movement could ” undermine Republicans chances of taking the House back in November .” He then quizzed, “What did you think when you saw that billboard, comparing the President to Hitler and Lenin?” In contrast, during Iraq war protests, vulgar, sometimes violent signs held up by liberals were routinely ignored by journalists. Yet, Stephanopoulos berated the Minnesota representative, “You yourself had to distance yourself last fall from members of the Tea Party that were using Holocaust imagery.” Earlier in the piece, the GMA host hit Bachmann for suggesting that extension of unemployment benefits should be paid for. He asserted, “The tax cuts passed by President Bush are set to expire at the end of the year. I know you want to extend them. Do you support paying for those, as well?” Asking a politician to be consistent on how to pay for their programs and policy beliefs is fair. It’s just too bad that reporters rarely ask Democrats how they will pay for things or what programs should be cut. A transcript of the segment, which aired at 7:09am EDT, follows: GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: For more on this, we are going to turn to the founder of the brand new Tea Party caucus in the House, Republican Congressman Michele Bachman of Minnesota. Thanks for joining us this morning, Congresswoman. And let’s get right to this unemployment debate. President Obama, you saw that offensive in the Rose Garden yesterday, very tough on your party. He took on those who, he said, have no problems on spending hundreds of billions of dollars on tax breaks for the wealthiest of Americans. But are now saying we shouldn’t offer relief to the middle class Americans. How do you respond? MICHELE BACHMANN: Well, the best way to offer a relief to the middle class is to have a pro-job growth economy. And that’s not what the President has laid forth in his strategy. Republicans are not opposed to unemployment benefits, hardly. We’re looking at $34 billion in unemployment. But, remember, it was Democrats that made a big deal of the concept of pay-go. They said they would not spend money unless they made cuts in other places. Neither the President, nor Speaker Pelosi has made an attempt to cut spending in order to pay for the benefits. This is a basic function of government. And, so, it’s important that they find other cuts in other places. But instead, George, what we’ve seen, they’ve continued to expand the long line of benefits in other areas. We need to make first things first. STEPHANOPOULOS: Let’s take a look at that principle. The tax cuts passed by President Bush are set to expire at the end of the year. I know you want to extend them. Do you support paying for those, as well? BACHMANN: I think we need to be paying for all of the spending that’s going out. But when people are able to keep more of their own money, that shouldn’t be considered a cost. STEPHANOPOULOS: So, that’s a no? BACHMANN: Well, I think what we need to do is have a pro-job growth formula. And, really, what that is, cut the dramatic government spending that has happened. This didn’t happen in a vacuum. President obama spent over $1 trillion on stimulus. We were all promised that about four million jobs would be created. Instead, about four million jobs were lost. Then, President Obama decided to take over, through either direct ownership or control, one private industry after another. What we’ve learned is that the federal government takeover of private business leads to unemployment, not employment. STEPHANOPOULOS: Let me be clear then- BACHMANN: Your story’s accurate. People want jobs. That’s true. They don’t want unemployment. But the government’s policies have brought about failure in private job creation. STEPHANOPOULOS: But, to be clear, you’re saying the tax cuts don’t have to be paid for. But this unemployment extension does. Let me turn to the new Tea Party caucus that was formed. You said it was designed to promote fiscal responsibility, adherence to the Constitution and limited government. I’m wondering, why do you think it’s necessary? Are leaders in the House not living up to that responsibility? BACHMANN: Well, what we’ve been hearing from people all over the country, George, is that Congress is not listening to the American people. This is a forum for members of Congress to be able to listen to what people have been trying to tell us. And it is very simple. It’s a banner that comes under the idea of don’t spend more than what you’re taking in. People want the federal government to live just the way they do. And they want us to adhere to principles of the Constitution, because people believe they’re taxed enough already. This isn’t a political party, like the Republican Party or Democrat Party. It’s a set of ideas that, after all, members of Congress, swore that they would uphold under the Constitution. STEPHANOPOULOS: You also run the risk of taking in the controversy that comes with the Tea Party, as well. We all saw the billboard in northern Iowa last week, comparing President Obama to Hitler and Lenin. The broader movement had to expel the Chairman of the Tea Party Express this weekend for making racist comments. You yourself had to distance yourself last fall from members of the Tea Party that were using Holocaust imagery. Are you worried that being more formally aligned with the Tea Party, you might undermine Republicans chances of taking the House back in November? BACHMANN: Well, what I think what we’re trying to do more than anything, again, is to give a forum to the ideas that people have tried to talk to us about. Most of the people who came to Washington, to rallies, and to town hall meetings across the country, are just trying to get the attention of Congress to say, would you please stop spending money that you don’t have. Because, the money is our money. That’s what the people are saying. These are lawyers, doctors, small business owners, housewives, farmers. People from all walks of life, just saying, please, federal government, get your act together. And start acting in a way that will not leave us bankrupt and will create a pro-growth agenda here in America. STEPHANOPOULOS: We only have a few seconds. What did you think when you saw that billboard, comparing the President to Hitler and Lenin? BACHMANN: Well, you know, some things aren’t helpful going forward. And to focus on the ideas of a pro-growth economy, living within our means, that’s positive. That’s what we hope to do in this caucus.

Lindsay Lohan Lawyer Robert Shapiro Quit On Eve Of Jail Sentence

Actress may have been considering last-minute appeal before reporting to jail on Tuesday. By Gil Kaufman Lindsay Lohan Photo: David McNew/ Getty Images Once again, Lindsay Lohan is without a lawyer. On Monday, just one day before Lohan was scheduled to report for a 90-day jail sentence , former O.J. Simpson attorney Robert Shapiro stepped down from representing the troubled actress, four days after agreeing to take the case. According to KTLA , Shapiro and Lohan, 24, had an emergency meeting with Judge Marsha Revel late Monday afternoon in which Shapiro announced his resignation. The prosecutor in the case was not present for the meeting, and Shapiro did not say why he was quitting. Before stepping down, Shapiro had publicly stated that he would only represent Lohan if she agreed to go to jail instead of trying to appeal her sentence — and if she followed his instructions. Prior to Shapiro taking the case, Chicago attorney Stuart V. Goldberg met with Lohan and her family to discuss representing the “Mean Girls” star but declined, saying the actress was a “fragile, lost child” who didn’t seem aware of the gravity of her situation. Lohan’s original attorney, Shawn Chapman Holley , resigned her position shortly after the former child star’s sentencing. But KTLA reported on Monday that court records indicate that while Shapiro has been representing Lohan for the past few days, Holley never officially signed the substitution of attorney form, which means she is still the attorney of record for Lohan. Holley could not be reached for comment at press time, but KTLA reported that the attorney resigned after she learned that Lohan was “shopping” for a different lawyer. RadarOnline , citing unnamed sources close to the star, said that Holley will indeed be beside Lohan on Tuesday morning (July 20) when she submits to begin serving her sentence. Lohan has been staying at the Pickford Lofts sober-living facility for the past five days and reportedly checked out on Monday. The Lofts were founded by Shapiro after his son, Brent, died of a drug overdose. Radar speculated that Shapiro’s abrupt resignation, which coincided with Lohan checking out of the Lofts, might have signaled that the actress was going to try a last-ditch appeal to her jail term. Radar also reported that the district attorney in the case issued a stern warning to Lohan’s legal team about a possible appeal. Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Danette Meyers reportedly told the site that she would object to any move to send Lohan to rehab instead of jail. “I have two things to say about that, first, she had done an in-patient rehab program before — and it didn’t work,” Meyers said. “Secondly, Judge Revel has already sentenced her. She needs to do the time. Jail is the only thing that is going to get her attention.” Though sentenced to 90 days, Lohan is likely to only serve around 25 percent of her time, or 23 days, due to overcrowding. Following jail, she has been ordered to spend 90 days in in-patient rehab. Related Photos Lindsay Lohan Goes To Court The Highs And Lows Of Lindsay Lohan Related Artists Lindsay Lohan

Usher Performs First Concert In China — And Sings In Chinese

He is joined by Chinese singer Leehom Wang, who helped Usher out on ‘OMG.’ By Kelley L. Carter Wang Leehom and Usher Photo: 42 West For his first-ever show in Beijing, Usher paired up with Chinese singer Leehom Wang onstage to sing his hit “OMG.” They also joined forces on Wang’s “My One and Only” — which Usher even sang in Mandarin. Usher encouraged his fans to sing along. “I want you to have crowd participation, which is very odd in my Asian markets, because a lot of times, they don’t like to sing out of respect, but I don’t mind. I love for my audience to sing along with me,” Usher said, according to Rap-Up.com . “That’s the part that makes me really enjoy it and I hope it makes them enjoy the show as well.” It was Usher’s first trip to China, and he pulled in Leehom to perform with him because he wanted to give his Chinese fans a little hometown flavor. “I am really excited!” Wang said before the show. “It is a great honor to be able to perform with Usher who has had such a powerful role in developing R&B around the world. The audience in Beijing is in for a really special night.” Usher said Wang came to his attention earlier that year as he started preparing for the tour. “You know, in looking at the music in Asia, Leehom really stood out,” Usher said in a statement. “Like me, he started young and I’m impressed by his natural talent, plus he has written some great songs. Also, his commitment to the environment and other good causes really resonated with my own philanthropic work.” What do you think about Usher singing in Chinese? Let us know in the comments! He came in third on season nine of American Idol . But Casey James might wanna finish first in the heart of a reality show contestant, he admits, recently expressing an interest in The Bachelor . After everyone’s favorite host/pimp, Chris Harrison, ran into James at a party last month, he told the singer that he’d perfect for the ABC series. Responded James to OK! LeBron James Heads To Miami Heat

The NBA Superstar announces long-awaited decision, saying decision to leave hometown Cleveland motivated by desire ‘to win.’ By Kelley L. Carter LeBron James announces that he will play for the Miami Heat on ESPN July 8 Photo: ESPN It was a move that will surely go down in sports history. But after a protracted wait, King James finally announced, at 9:27 p.m. ET, he’d be joining the Miami Heat. LeBron James’ decision to televise his decision became an event that seemed as if it could have been ripped from the pages of a screenplay. Sitting before ESPN cameras, the former Cleveland Cavaliers forward had millions of viewers anticipating his final choice with baited breath. “I feel like this is going to give me the best opportunity to win — and to win for multiple years. I want to be able to win championships,” he said, explaining what motivated him to venture to Miami. “This process has been everything I thought and more. I put myself in the position to have this process, where I could hear teams’ pitches and figure out what was the best possibility for me to win … and be happy,” James said during an interview before his big announcement. The 25-year-old revealed that it was a really humbling experience to be in the position he’d found himself in, as multiple teams vied for his attention. James thanked all of those teams, saying he’d made the decision earlier Thursday morning (July 8) and adding that in the preceding weeks, he often changed his mind on a day-to-day basis. “I woke up, had a great conversation with my mom, once I had that conversation with her, I was set,” he said. James is considered to be the most prized free agent in league history, and he was the last of the top free agents to announce where he’d land. The major factor in his decision, he said, was the best opportunity for him to win, both now and in the future. “Every since I was a rookie or in high school … that was the number one thing for me,” he said. “I’ve done some great things in my seven years and I want to continue to do that,” he continued about his tenure in Cleveland. The announcement comes after what felt like an eternity of a waiting period, with the two-time NBA MVP finally ending months of speculation about where he would play basketball next season. (James is only one of two players to earn the MVP accolade twice by the age of 25; Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is the other.) Diehard NBA fans and casual watchers alike had been guessing about where James would go in 2010, many since the NBA superstar signed his last contract back in 2007. Before his announcement, speculation was heavy: Would he break his hometown, Cleveland’s, heart? Would he go to Miami and join his former U.S. Olympic teammates Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh? Or would he go to New York or Chicago? Hours before the announcement on Thursday, James made an appearance at his basketball camp, arriving mid-afternoon with former teammate Damon Jones. Others in attendance included top college coaches, including Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski, North Carolina’s Roy Williams, West Virginia’s Bob Huggins and Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim. James gave his decision during an hourlong broadcast that aired live ESPN from a Boys & Girls Club in Greenwich, Connecticut. The aim of the special program, James’ said, was also to raise at least $1 million to aid James’ foundation. What do you think of LeBron’s decision to go to Miami? Did he make the right choice? Injured Madina Lake Bassist Is In ‘Tenuous Situation,’ Brother Says

‘Honestly it’s like walking on glass,’ Nathan Leone says of brother Matthew, who was seriously injured in assault. By James Montgomery Matthew Leone Photo: Steve Thorne/ Getty Images More than a week after he was badly beaten and left unconscious on the streets of Chicago, Madina Lake bassist Matthew Leone has been discharged from the hospital and is resting at his brother — and Madina Lake frontman — Nathan’s apartment. But obviously, he’s still far from a complete recovery from the attack — which happened after he attempted to intervene in a domestic dispute and left him with a broken nose and jaw, a fractured skull, and hemorrhaging so severe on his brain that doctors were forced to remove a third of his skull. And now, with a second surgery scheduled for July 16, the responsibility of keeping him stable now largely rests on Nathan Leone’s shoulders. And, as Nathan told MTV News on Wednesday (July 7), things are still very much touch-and-go. “Honestly it’s like walking on glass, because I have to make sure absolutely nothing happens to him, have to keep him safe and protected and healing, and then, there’s the brain surgery, with all the risks of that,” Nathan said. “It’s a very tenuous situation. He can’t roll over, can’t really rest the side of his head on anything, and he can’t get up and walk around, even though he very much wants to. He spends most of the day right in the middle of my bed, so he can’t roll off at night. I’ve been sleeping on the couch.” Leone said that Matthew is awake, aware and speaking — “It’s not anything profound,” he chuckled — and that right now, the main focus is just making sure he remains comfortable and safe until his surgery, at which point, doctors will attempt to re-attach the portion of his skull they removed. “He’s slowly but surely getting his strength back, but it’s still hard, because not only is his surgery upcoming, but any time you have a neurological trauma, the long-term effects are unknown, and can be for up to a year,” Nathan said. “So, right now, it’s a situation where we have all this time until the surgery, and you’re holding your breath that everything is stable until then. Then you need that surgery to go perfectly, and from there it’s another four to six weeks of recovery. So hopefully everything goes as well as can possible.” In the mean time, there’s still the matter of the pending case against Matthew’s alleged attacker, 33-year-old Justin Pivec , which Nathan can’t talk about for legal reasons (“You have no idea how badly I want to say something,” he sighed), and the ongoing efforts by Madina Lake’s management to raise funds to help with Matthew’s mounting medical costs — efforts which have left Nathan amazed and his brother more than a little embarrassed. “In some ways he’s a shy person, and the attention that’s come from this is something he’s not ecstatic about, but at the same time, it’s just overwhelmingly positive, and of course it makes him feel much better,” Nathan said. “Everyone’s been so amazingly supportive, really, I can’t express what it means to all of us.” And though all of this has obviously taken up the majority of his focus, Nathan said that he and his Madina Lake bandmates met on Tuesday night to discuss just how Matthew’s injuries will affect the future of their band. And, from the sound of things, they’re planning to push on with Matthew at their side, as much as possible. “We have the Sonisphere Festival coming up in UK, and we scheduled a few headlining dates around that, and we decided last night that we’re going to commit to playing them, and we’re not going to hire a bass player to fill in,” Nathan said. “Instead, if it’s possible, we’re going to try to have Matthew record his bass tracks here, and then run them when we play live. We’re not going to hire a new bass player [for the shows] … we don’t want anyone to take his place. So, if he can pick up a bass, he’s going to play his parts.” Share your get-well wishes for Matthew Leone in the comments below. Related Artists Madina Lake

Dylan Ratigan Condemns ‘Arizona’s Anti-immigration Law,’ Calls for Mob Rule to Overhaul System

You have to hand it to Dylan Ratigan. The MSNBC bloviator melded immigration reform, the military industrial complex, and congressional gridlock into a scatter-brained diatribe at the top of his eponymous program on Thursday. In the wake of President Barack Obama’s speech on immigration reform earlier in the day, Ratigan railed against “Arizona’s latest anti-immigration law” and praised Obama for “doing a good job, and a better job that almost any politician I’ve seen in a long time, in drawing our nation’s attention to the major broken systems in this country.” The former CNBC anchor who fancies himself a financial guru also babbled about a “War on Drugs that feeds money into the military complex but does nothing to defeat drug use or, for that matter, protect the border.” Then, interviewing Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.), Ratigan excoriated a Senate full of “weasels” that perpetuates an “utterly frozen process that allows the special interests to destroy our country and freeze our government.” Not surprisingly, Becerra, a strident supporter of comprehensive immigration reform, concurred with the unhinged talk show host: “Dylan, I don’t know if I could have said it better.” While claiming to criticize both sides of the aisle, Ratigan continued to cheerlead for the Democratic president, asking Becerra, “How do we – how do I in the media, how do you in the Congress – help this president try to lead us?” Without missing a beat, Becerra suggested dismantling one of America’s most treasured safeguards against tyranny – the Senate’s super-majority threshold for closing debate – and replacing it with what the Founding Fathers derided as “mob rule.” “Dylan all we have to do is get the public to tell the Senate to let us go back to majority rule,” proposed Becerra. Ratigan proved it is possible to misrepresent a popular state law, posit outlandish conspiracy theories about the military, and undermine the foundation of republican government over the course of a five minute rant. The transcript of the relevant portions of the program can be found below: DYLAN RATIGAN: A problem, of course, made more pressing by the controversy over Arizona’s latest anti-immigration law. The government expected to file a lawsuit, in fact, against that law in the coming days. First the president drew our attention to health care. All of our attention, whether we like it or not, remains on our financial system, corrupt and destroying our country as it is. And now immigration. While short on true fixes, at least Obama is doing a good job, and a better job that almost any politician I’ve seen in a long time, in drawing our nation’s attention to the major broken systems in this country. So when and if will we actually see reform? Will our lawmakers actually step up and do better on this effort when it comes to immigration, or will we just get another example of nothing more than “reform in name only” that perpetuates the most profitable aspects of illegal immigration, in this case cheap labor, and of course a War on Drugs that feeds money into the military complex but does nothing to defeat drug use or, for that matter, protect the border. Joining us now, California Congressman Xavier Becerra, an outspoken advocate for immigration reform. He’s also Chair of the House Democratic Caucus, excuse me. You have to be pleased with the president at least drawing everybody’s attention to this, and approaching honesty by acknowledging the mess, not only in immigration in this country, but in Washington and its total denial and inability to lead us to a solution. Do you agree with him? Rep. XAVIER BECERRA (D-Calif.): Dylan I do agree with him, and it takes courage to say those things to the American public because right now the public is so very frustrated. RATIGAN: How do we – how do I in the media, how do you in the Congress – help this president try to lead us? How do we come together in a way that resolves this in a way that is closer to fair than not? BECERRA: We shouldn’t let anyone kick the can down the road, as the president said. Everyone should be held accountable. In Congress, we need to see not just Democrats, we’re ready to go to work on this, but Republicans as well. And we know they’re out there. They were there three years ago. We know that there are some votes in the Senate that would want to do something but right now we need to see some courage on the Republican side in the Senate. Unfortunately right now, the Senate has become the graveyard for good ideas because Republicans are holding hostage any vote that doesn’t get to 60 in a house of 100. So you have to have the super-majority vote, and it makes it very difficult, if not impossible to get good ideas into law. RATIGAN: Should we throw out all the senators in November and start over? BECERRA: Well there’s some very good senators who are trying to do some things here, so no no. RATIGAN: How do we tell the difference, how to we figure out who the weasels are? Don’t tell me it’s the Democrats and the Republicans because I’ve been doing this long enough to know there are just as many weasely Democrats as there are Republicans. The trick is trying to tell which is which within the party. BECERRA: Dylan all we have to do is get the public to tell the Senate to let us go back to majority rule. In November, we’re going to operate on majority rule. Whatever individual wins more votes than the other, that person becomes the next congressman or the next senator. But in the Senate, you can have a majority and still not pass a bill to the president’s desk. So majority rule and we get a lot done. RATIGAN: So you would argue that the very same corrupt system that is bankrupting California, the need for a super-majority to do anything, and obviously nobody gets it, so special interests just continue to torch that state. And now the Senate has a duplication of that same utterly frozen process that allows the special interests to destroy our country and freeze our government. Is that basically what we’re dealing with here? BECERRA: Dylan, I don’t know if I could have said it better. Take a look at the Wall Street reform bill. The Senate is making it almost impossible for us to get there. There are more than 58 votes for a bill and we still can’t get it to the president’s desk. Hopefully soon the senators allow this bill to go the president and stop holding it hostage. –Alex Fitzsimmons is a News Analysis intern at the Media Research Center. ‘Mad Men’ Star Christina Hendricks Happy Fans Are ‘Celebrating’ Her Figure

‘It’s like, thank you for letting me be me,’ voluptuous actress tells Health magazine. By Mawuse Ziegbe Christina Hendricks Photo: David Livingston/ Getty Images “Mad Men” has captivated fans with its glossy take on high-powered, mid-century New Yorkers who clink cocktails during meetings and indulge in lusty inter-office trysts, all the while maintaining their dapper sheen throughout the debauchery. Ginger-haired secretary Joan Holloway has mesmerized viewers with both her thorough command of office politics and the throwback appeal of her whiplash curves. But actress Christina Hendricks, who portrays Holloway on the AMC hit, says she’s surprised by the attention. In an interview with Health magazine , Hendricks seemed taken aback when told that many women admire her figure. “Really? They don’t say Jessica Alba? ‘Cause that’s what I say!” the star laughed. Hendricks added that she appreciates all the love for her form, especially in light of her previous experiences in Hollywood. “It’s such a compliment, because of all those times I had agents who were like, ‘You have to lose some weight,’ and all of a sudden, people are celebrating it. It’s like: ‘Oh, thank you! Thank you for letting me be me,’ ” she said. Hendricks does concede that the scrutiny can get a little odd. When told that “Christina Hendricks’ cup size” was a popular search term related to the star, she shrugged it off. “It’s weird,” the actress said. “But it doesn’t surprise me.” Even though her retro buxom look may rival starlets like Alba in terms of desirability, Hendricks did admit that she can be affected by some of the e-hate that gets thrown at celebs. “I made the grave mistake after one awards show of reading comments online about what I wore, and I was like, [gasps] ‘Oh my God, people are so mean!’ ” she said. “I still remember all those negative comments, despite all the wonderful positivity. That’s why we’re all in therapy! [We remember] the 10 bad things that happen to us instead of the 100 nice ones.” While a snarky comment here and there might sting, Hendricks said she shares a tough attitude with her “Mad Men” character. “I think Joan and I have a ‘no excuses’ kind of mentality — I’m going to stand by my decisions, no regrets, no apologies,” she said. “But she is far more confident than I am. She’s far more confident than most women are in the world!”
