‘The Expendables’ Cast Hits The New York Stock Exchange

Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren and Terry Crews rang the stock market’s opening bell on Thursday. By Eric Ditzian Cast of “The Expendables” at the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday Photo: Devan Pratt/MTV News If there’s one thing we learned from “The Expendables,” it’s that Sylvester Stallone and his crew of bomb-tossing hotshots can accomplish anything. So on Thursday morning (August 19), when Sly and his co-stars found themselves on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange at a time when unemployment is still high and debt is soaring, we had to wonder: What could The Expendables do to rescue the economy? Not a whole lot, apparently — even though their flick hauled in $35 million over the weekend. “We went to the bank; they turned down our credit,” Stallone laughed in an interview with MTV News. “So we thought we’d go to the source. That’s why we’re here. Not to promote a movie. It’s to get a house loan!” There was certainly no shortage of traders, analysts and slick-haired execs on hand to offer financial advice. After Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren and Terry Crews rang the exchange’s opening bell, the stars descended to the trading floor and were promptly swarmed. But Sly and his guys were happy for the attention, basking in the glow of having the #1 movie in the country. Stallone himself didn’t think it would turn out this way. “After the first day, you hope you can win,” he said. “Because I didn’t think we were going to win the weekend. We had some really tough competition with Julia [Roberts and ‘Eat Pray Love’]. But now, I don’t look at them anymore. I just look at how other people are doing. I don’t look at us. It’s kind of like a jinx.” “The people have spoken!” added an exuberant Crews. “They want the badassery! They need it. And they’ve spoken. That’s why it’s the #1 movie in America!”

Fantasia’s Alleged Boyfriend Antwaun Cook Defends Singer

‘The failure of his marriage can in no way be blamed on anyone except the two people that were a part of the union,’ Cook’s lawyer says. By Mawuse Ziegbe Fantasia Photo: Getty Images Many fans have suggested that Fantasia Barrino is in the wrong for allegedly taking up with a married man. However, the married man in question, Antwaun Cook, says the singer is not responsible for breaking up his relationship. “He knew Fantasia Barrino but the failure of his marriage can in no way be blamed on anyone except the two people that were a part of the union — Paula and Antwaun,” Cook’s lawyer, Nicole Sodoma, said in a statement on Wednesday (August 18). Sodoma also says that Cook and his wife have been separated for about a year. “Paula and Antwaun married in 2005. They expected their marriage to stand the test of time,” Sodoma said in the statement. “Unfortunately, like many marriages, it did not turn out as planned. In late summer 2009, after years of discussion, the parties separated with the intention of no longer being married.” Last week, Barrino was hospitalized following an apparent suicide attempt. The season-three “American Idol” winner suffered a drug overdose after ingesting a combination of aspirin and a sleep aid. Rumors abounded that the singer’s alleged relationship with Cook was a factor in her apparent attempt to take her own life. The incident occurred roughly a week after Cook’s wife, Paula, filed court documents alleging that her spouse and Barrino engaged in a “covert adulterous affair” and created a sex tape together . Despite recovering from her overdose and weathering criticism from fans about her alleged relationship with Cook, Barrino is already back to promoting her new album . The “Bittersweet” singer has several scheduled television appearances in the next few weeks as she builds buzz for the release for her third album, Back to Me, which is set to drop on August 24. The single “Bittersweet” is currently at #10 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. What do you think about all of the attention surrounding Antwaun Cook and Fantasia Barrino’s relationship? T.I. Makes Triumphant Return To Stage In NYC

B.o.B, Swizz Beatz, Mary J. Blige, Cam’ron, Keri Hilson join Tip for ‘secret’ show. By Shaheem Reid T.I. performs in New York City on August 16 Photo: Jamie McCarthy/ Getty Images The King of the South ruled the Big Apple last night as T.I. brought a live band to lower Manhattan’s Capitale to perform a “secret show” sponsored by Axe deodorant body spray. The show was Tip’s first since returning home from prison several months ago. Wearing a hoodie, Tip addressed the crowd from the side of the stage before coming out. “Y’all act like y’all scared to get this muthaf—a started,” he said. Moments later, the King came out to “I’m Back.” Tip took off his hood to reveal a red Anaheim Angels hat, then started “Beat Down Low.” The star of the upcoming film “Takers” (due August 24) then leveled the venue with a flurry of his street classics including “Rubber Band Man,” “24s,” “Ride Wit Me” and “U Don’t Know Me.” The transitions were seamless and Tip was in prime form, sounding crisp and full of energy. The Grammy winner did take a couple of breaks though, to let his guests rock. Cam’ron came out for one of his signature bangers, “I Really Mean It.” Then the head of the Diplomats and the U.N. introduced fellow Harlem native Vado for “Speaking in Tungs.” “This is king amongst kings,” Tip said. “Since I had the King of Harlem, I had to bring out the King of Brooklyn.” Maino was then introduced and performed his platinum hit “All the Above.” Tip then shared a mini-set with his Grand Hustle artist B.o.B . First Bob came out for Paper Trail ‘s “On Top of the World” and stayed for his collabo with Tip “Bet I Bust.” T.I. then handed over the full reigns of the stage to the man with the alias of Bobby Ray. And B.o.B pulled out his number-one guns with “Nothing On You” and “Airplanes.” Tip returned and asked could he get his grown man on. Mary J. Blige then came out to the stage for “Don’t Forget Me” and “Good Love.” When Tip was at a point in the concert when some artists began to falter and lose the fans’ attention, T.I. went in the opposite direction and turned up the dial. Swizz Beatz came out for “Fancy” and you could hear the audience participating, yelling “You fancy, huh?” The enthusiasm was maintained on possibly the most energetic, note for note, two records of the night: the Tip/Swizz collaborations “Bring Em Out” and “Swing Your Rag.” From there, the catalog kept rolling with vintage records like “Swagger Like Us,” “ASAP” and “Live Your Life.” Keri Hilson was the last guest to perform, with “Got Your Back.” And as the night came to a close, Tip kept his attention on the ladies with “Whatever You Like.” Related Photos T.I.’s NYC Secret Show With B.o.B, Mary J. Amy Winehouse Confuses My Crotch

Speaking of uncomfortable rashes, here’s Amy Winehouse out the other night doing her drunken musician act for the cameras. This chick is obviously a train wreck, but there’s something about her that’s got my attention. I’m not sure if you can tell what it is, I’ll give you a hint, it rhymes with ‘Holy Crap Her Tits Are Huge!!’ *Disclaimer* -simply because I want to stick my face in Amy Winehouse’s breasts does not in any way mean I find her the least bit attractive-

Kristin Cavallari Sexy Meter Maid

It’s pretty clear to me that Kristin Cavallari is trying to get my attention, stop denying our love princess. Here she is in her sexy little dress sensually feeding the meter like a good responsible driver. She obviously knows about my fetish for pictures of hot chicks feeding parking meters, it’s a known thing, we have an annual meeting. Why else would anyone touch one of those nasty things? Anyhow, she’s doing this just to torment me…. And I like. Who gets the last laugh this time?

The Arcade Fire: Rock And Roll Champions Of The World

Their #1 album and Lollapalooza-closing set solidified their position atop the rock heap, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Win Butler of The Arcade Fire performs at Lollapalooza Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images On Wednesday morning (August 11), the long-vacated Rock and Roll Championship belt finally found a new home: around the waists of multi-hyphenate Montreal rockers the Arcade Fire (it’s a pretty big belt). With the rather startling #1 debut of their sublime third album The Suburbs here in the U.S. (and its slightly less startling #1 debut in the U.K. ), they are now, officially, the heavyweight champions of the rock world. At least until Radiohead put something out. Of course, this doesn’t mean they’re the biggest band in the world (because they’re not), or the best (because that’s purely subjective). It merely means they’re the standard-bearers for “important” rock, for globe-uniting, stadium-packing sentiment, for the betterment of mankind. They are the band that magazine editors slap on the cover along with the headline “Can _____ Save the World?” And while a #1 debut certainly helps, being champion of the rock world is less about album sales (because then, like, Nickelback would be the champs) than it is about mystique, about power, about intangibles. It is not easily definable, but you definitely know the Rock and Roll Champions when you see them. And for me, that moment occurred this past weekend, during the Arcade Fire’s festival-closing set at Lollapalooza . Pitted opposite the reunited Soundgarden (themselves former holders of the belt), AF blew me away — along with the 50,000-something folks who packed in with me — with a set that was as hard-fought and far-reaching as it was grandiose. Sure, their older stuff packed a wallop, but the soaring choruses of songs like “Neighborhood #2 (Laika)” and “Wake Up” are tailor-made for huge crowds and even huger expanses. What impressed me the most was the way the band — and the husband/wife tandem of Win Butler and Regine Chassagne — translated the quieter, more personal sentiments of the songs from The Suburbs into universal, crowd-uniting statements. Songs like “Ready to Start,” “Rococo” and especially the title track are all deeply muted, winsome tragedies (the kind of uniquely suburban angst that plays out in most of our hearts and minds), and yet, on Sunday night, in Chicago’s Grant Park, they too became life-affirming, chill-inducing sing-alongs. It was cathartic: 50,000 people releasing their inner demons. And during all that, I realized that the Arcade Fire had ascended to the heights of former champions like Radiohead and prime-era U2 and probably even Coldplay. Their shows had become events. Spiritual things. And yet, much like Radiohead (and unlike U2 or Coldplay), there was still an aura to them, a well-cultivated mystique. They emerged in silhouette at the beginning of their set, spoke very little during it and departed with a series of simple waves and bows. You don’t know very much about them, and they prefer to keep it that way. They seem genuinely unnerved by the attention they receive. This is the crucial part of any championship band: the mystery remains intact. And it’s from that mystery that the magic emerges. That is why the Arcade Fire picked up the belt vacated by Radiohead sometime in 2007 (post- In Rainbows ). They have the mystique of a champion. And while, using the WWE scale, the Rock and Roll Championship is sort of comparable to the Intercontinental belt these days (the Pop Championship would probably be the heavyweight division, which makes Lady Gaga Kane , and the Hip Hop Championship — currently held by Eminem or maybe Rick Ross — would be the WWE title), it’s nice to have a champion again. How long they hold the belt is anybody’s guess, but for now, it’s theirs to run with. Rock and roll is important again. And who knows? Maybe the Arcade Fire will be the band that finally figures out how to save the world. Long may they reign. Do you agree, or would you give the Rock and Roll Championship belt to a different band?
