Dep, born Trevell Coleman, was convicted of second-degree murder in New York on Tuesday (April 17) following a trial that began after Coleman admitted to killing a man in 1993 during a botched robbery attempt. In late 2010, Coleman came forward to confess that he’d shot a man , identified by police as John Henkel, nearly two decades earlier in Harlem. According to Coleman’s story, he attempted to rob a man on a Harlem corner, then shot him and rode off on a bicycle, not knowing whether the victim had survived. Opening statements in the trial were made last week, on April 10, and one day later, Coleman dropped a bombshell on prosecutors by changing up his story . He claimed that while he did shoot someone, it was not Henkel. Despite the change in story, the prosecution stood firm, contending that Henkel was the only victim who fit the details of Coleman’s confession. “Eighteen years ago, the defendant made a calculated decision to steal from, shoot and kill an innocent person on the street,” Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. said in a statement. Trevell Coleman is expected to face a minimum sentence of 15 years to life in prison on May 8. After the jury delivered a guilty verdict for the 37-year-old, defense lawyer Anthony Ricco praised his client’s efforts to be honest. “He has a conscience and a heart, and his conscience and his heart brought him to where he is today,” Ricco told reporters after the trial. “He’s probably making the most powerful statement a rapper of his era can make, which is to be accountable and to do the right thing.” Coleman saw a brief rise to fame beginning in 1998 with an appearance on “The Mall” from Gang Starr’s Moment of Truth album. Later that year he signed to Diddy’s Bad Boy Records, and in 2001 he dropped his debut album, Child of the Ghetto, which spawned the hit single “Special Delivery.” Still, the album failed to be a commercial success, and although he followed up with the 2004 mixtape The Deputy: The Sheriff Is Back in Town Volume 1, a slew of arrests, ranging from drug charges to grand larceny, put an end to his career for good. George Zimmerman Makes First Court Appearance Neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman made his first court appearance Thursday on a second-degree murder charge in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, as a court document provided new details on the prosecution’s case. During the brief appearance, Zimmerman stood up straight, looked straight ahead and wore a gray prison jumpsuit. He spoke only to answer “Yes, sir,” twice after he was asked basic questions about the charge against him and his attorney. His hair was shaved down to stubble and he had a thin goatee, which appeared consistent with his booking photo from the day before. He had resurfaced Wednesday to turn himself in after weeks in hiding. Judge Mark E. Herr said he found probable cause to move ahead with the case and that an arraignment would be held on May 29 before another judge. A document prepared by prosecutors shed some light on why they chose to charge Zimmerman. The affidavit says Martin’s mother identified screams heard in the background of a 911 call as her son’s. There had been some question as to whether Martin or Zimmerman was the one calling for help. Prosecutors also interviewed a friend of Martin’s who was talking to him just before the shooting. The affidavit says Martin told the witness he was being followed and was scared. Martin tried to run home, the affidavit says, but was followed by Zimmerman: “Zimmerman got out of his vehicle and followed Martin.” The affidavit says that “Zimmerman disregarded the police dispatcher” who told him to stop, and “continued to follow Martin who was trying to return to his home.” The Orlando Sentinel obtained the affidavit of probable cause before it was filed with the courthouse. Speaking to reporters after the hearing, attorney Mark O’Mara said he was concerned that the case up to now has been handled in the public eye, with details coming out in piecemeal fashion. “It’s really supposed to happen in the courtroom,” O’Mara said, deflecting questions about evidence in the case and his client’s mental state. Justice for Trayvon !!!! State Attorney Angela Corey has decided not to use a grand jury in her investigation into the shooting death of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin: The grand jury, scheduled by the case’s previous prosecutor, was set to convene on April 10. A statement released by her office said that the decision “should not be considered a factor in the final determination of the case.” Corey was appointed by Gov. Rick Scott last month to take over the investigation. At that time she said she may not need a grand jury. Corey, the state attorney for the Jacksonville area, was appointed to take over the case after the local state attorney, Norman Wolfinger, recused himself. Monday’s statement said that the investigation continues, and declined further comment. The decision to press charges now rests solely with Corey, whose reputation was to not present cases before grand juries if not required under state law. (In Florida grand juries are only required in cases of first-degree murder.) Zimmerman’s friends and family believe he is innocent of any wrongdoing. But an attorney for Martin’s family says Zimmerman should be put on trial. “When you look at this evidence and evaluate it, I think the consensus is there must be an arrest in this case,” said Martin family attorney Natalie Jackson.
