No Isht Sherlock! Jodie Foster Reveals She’s Gay During Golden Globes Acceptance Speech

Jodie Foster reached a career milestone last night. Make that two. In addition to winning recognition from the Hollywood Foreign Press in the form of the Cecil B. DeMille Award for Lifetime Achievement, the 50-year-old actress acknowledged her same-sex-lovin’ status for the first time ever in public! Via US Weekly reports : Jodie Foster stole the show at the Golden Globes in Beverly Hills on Sunday Jan. 13. The actress and director, 50, accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award for Lifetime Achievement — and in her emotional, funny, wild speech, Foster finally, publicly acknowledged that she’s gay. “I have a sudden urge to say something i’ve never really been able to say in public,” Foster (clad in custom Armani) said, clutching her award. “A declaration that I’m a little nervous about, but, you know, loud and proud.” Teasing the audience, Foster continued . . . “I am . . . single!” As the crowd laughed, she added. “Yes I am, I’m kidding. I’m not really kidding, but kind of.” The resolutely private Oscar winner explained of her private romantic life: “i did my coming out a thousand years ago back in the stone age, in those quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends and family . . . Now I’m told every celebrity is expected [to share] the details of their private life with a reality show.” Joked Foster: “I’m not Honey Boo Boo child! That’s not me. It never was and it never will be. Don’t be sad . . . my reality show would be so boring!” The mother of two, who has been working as an actress since early childhood, said: “Seriously, if you had been public figure for the time you were a toddler. If you had to fight for a life that felt real and honest and normal and against all odds. . . Then maybe you too would value privacy against everything else . . Some day in the future, people will look back and remember how beautiful it once was. I have given everything up there…that’s reality show enough.” As stars (including close friend Mel Gibson) looked on tearfully, the Accused star then acknowledged her former female partner: “There is no way i could ever stand here without acknowledging one of the deepest loves of my life, my heroic co-parent, expert in love, my soul sister in life…Sydney Bernard.” She also thanked her sons with Bernard, who looked on from the audience, Charlie, 14, and Kit, 11. “I am so proud of our modern family,” calling her boys “my reasons to breathe.” Foster thanked her ailing mother, not present for the moment: “I love you, I love you, I love you. I hope that if I say this three times, it will magically perfectly enter into your your soul, you were a great mom.” Implying a retirement of sorts, she added: “I may never be up on this stage again, on any stage for that matter.” Backstage, Foster clarified to reporters that she has no plans to retire from acting. After all these years, it must come as a relief to just let it all hang out, riiiiight?

Palm Springs International Film Festival Unveils 2013 Winners

The 24th Palm Springs International Film Festival capped off its 12-day event Sunday at a local restaurant naming this year’s winners. The occasion celebrated some of the fest’s 182 films in a setting that contrasts from its glittering awards show that the festival bills as a launching point to Awards Season. That event saw the likes of Ben Affleck , Sally Field , Jessica Chastain , Richard Gere , Naomi Watts , Bradley Cooper , Helen Mirren and more being honored by some of the festival’s well-heeled members. [ Related: ‘Les Misérables”s Tom Hooper Talks Anne Hathaway’s ‘Dark Place’ In Palm Springs ] But film prizes were handed out as the festival closed out its final weekend, with Wayne Blair’s The Sapphires taking the Best Narrative Feature award among Audience winners. The film centers on “the dilemma the rock band Journey faces to replace their lead singer Steve Perry after he quits the band. They eventually find the perfect solution via YouTube: a street kid who fronted a Filipino cover band.” In other wins, Israeli feature Fill the Void won the critic-centered FIPRESCI Prize for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year. In the film, an “18-year-old in Tel Aviv’s Hassidic community must choose between her heart’s desire and familial duty in a drama that make the conventions of the marriage plot feel brand new.” Palm Springs screened 42 of the 71 official Foreign Language submissions for the Academy Awards. The FIPRESCI prize for Best Actor of the Year in a Foreign Language Film went to Cosimo Rega Savatore Striano and Giovanni Acuri from Italian pic Caesar Must Die by Paolo Vittorio. Emilie Dequenne from Our Children (Belgium), directed by Joachim Lafosse, received the FIPRESCI Prize for Best Actress of the Year in a Foreign Language Film. The Cleaner (Peru) by Adrian Saba won the festival’s New Voices/New Visions award. The film tells the story of a mysterious and deadly epidemic in Lima, Perù, where a depressed and isolated man cleans up after the dying. When he takes in a frightened young boy who has lost his mother, he’s quietly transformed by the experience of caring for another human being. Spain’s Blancaneives by Pablo Berger, which opened the festival January 3rd, received the festival’s Cine Latino Award. The silent movie is an adaptation of Snow White, where the daughter of a famous bullfighter is mistreated by her wicked stepmother.  When she runs away and joins a band of dwarfs, her natural bullfighting talent is discovered, but her stepmother plots to bring her down. Their (fake) “Knife Guys” show, where the actors sell the latest and greatest in knives, was rudely interrupted by Jimmy Kimmel Live at its new 11:35 p.m. time slot. Take a look below: Knife Guys Ft. Kimmel made a strong debut opposite Leno and Letterman this week and is by all accounts a hilarious dude … but admit it, you’d rather watch Knife Guys .

Richard Gere’s Agent Says He’s ‘A Better Actor Than A Hunk’ At Q&A With Alec Baldwin

The scene outside East Hampton’s usually civilized Guild Hall was almost as frenzied as a mosh pit on Saturday night when an overflow crowd turned up to watch Alec Baldwin interview fellow leading man Richard Gere . The spirited conversation, which focused mostly on Gere’s pre- Pretty Woman career, was a precursor to the Arbitrage actor receiving the Hamptons International Film Festival’s 2012 Golden Starfish Award for Lifetime Achievement in Acting. Over the course of the discussion, Gere talked about some of  his more unusual moments working with such storied directors at Terrence Malick, Richard Brooks, Francis Ford Coppola  and Paul Schrader. For instance, he recalled his frustration working with Malick on Days of Heaven  because of the lack of guidance that the filmmaker gave to his actors. Malick “is a really interesting guy,” Gere said, “but one of his quirks is that he doesn’t always know what he wants.”  Indeed, during one frustrating scene, Gere said he found himself asking that very question of the director who then pointed to “linen curtains blowing” in the breeze of an open window. “I meant like that,” Gere said Malick told him, and in that case, the actor told Baldwin, “I knew exactly what he meant.” The silver-haired Gere also talked about Brooks’ secrecy regarding scripts.  He recalled that when he asked the director if he could see the screenplay to Looking for Mr. Goodbar , Brooks invited him to his Los Angeles home, where the filmmaker’s wife, actress Jean Simmons greeted Gere and led the actor to a “romantically lit room.”  There, Brooks gave him a half hour to read the script, which Gere implied, was not enough time, until he discovered that Brooks had “blacked out everything that was not my part.” The discussion took an amusing turn when Baldwin brought up the subject of American Gigolo and asked Gere if he was uncomfortable about his emergence as a sex symbol. The actor replied that it was an “interesting dilemma” and eventually invited his WME agent Andrew Finkelstein, who was sitting in the audience, to join the conversation. (Finkelstein was an assistant to the late ICM agent Ed Limato, who worked with Gere at the time of that 1980 movie.) Finkelstein replied that Limato  “didn’t like” that the media was focusing on Gere’s “hunkishness,” adding:  “You were a better actor than a hunk.” The line drew a big laugh from the audience, and Gere, wearing a wry smile on his face said:  “I’m a better actor than a hunk. Thank you, Andrew.” Finkelstein recovered nicely by yelling out:  “Richard is now looking for an agent.” Shortly before Gere was presented with his Golden Starfish award,  Baldwin asked the actor if any of his leading ladies had ever fallen for him. “Someone told me that one of them had, and I said, ‘I wish they had told me!'” Gere replied. “But I’m not going to answer that question.” Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter.  Follow Movieline on Twitter.

The Princess Bride Turns 25 With Star-Powered NY Film Festival Event

Tuesday night, the New York Film Festival hosted something that is likely a rarified event in the usually hallowed theater venues at Lincoln Center – a boisterous and rowdy crowd. But the event probably landed itself to the culture shift. The occasion was the 25th anniversary of The Princess Bride and a good chunk of the living cast showed up, including Robin Wright , Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, Chris Sarandon, Wallace Shawn and Billy Crystal in addition to director Rob Reiner as well as author William Goldman. Random shouts of “meathead” could be heard from the audience – all loving of course – when Reiner was introduced on stage as first coming to prominence as Michael Stivic in 1970s television show All in the Family . The Princess Bride was also likened to The Wizard of Oz (1939) – something Reiner fully embraced. Reiner recalled that when Princess Bride first went into release, a trailer had not been made a week before its roll out, nor had a one-sheet been created to describe the film. “Like ‘The Wizard of Oz’ at the time, the studios weren’t sure how to market this kind of a film,” said Reiner. “And similar to [that movie] it didn’t do [very well] when it first came out.” Released in September, 1987, the film had a strong showing in nine theaters in its initial run, but its overall theatrical run (nearly $31 million) apparently disappointed, but it has lived on as a cult favorite and the audience at Lincoln Center talked back to the screen in something akin to watching The Little Shop of Horrors (which incidentally also played at NYFF last weekend). Reiner’s father met William Goldman in 1968 while working on a book about Broadway that year. Reiner’s father had coincidentally just created a play running in New York. While still in his 20s, his dad gave him the novel The Princess Bride to read and, as might be expected, fell in love with it. “I was monster fan of everything [Goldman] had written,” he said. “My dad gave me the book and I couldn’t believe how incredible this book was. What a high degree of difficulty to do an adventure, romance, satire and make it all work. I thought it was the most incredible thing I’d read in my whole life.” Years later, after getting his lauded This is Spinal Tap and Stand by Me under his belt, Reiner thought about The Princess Bride . “So, many years go by and I had made some movies and I thought naively, ‘well they make movies out of books and my favorite book is The Princess Bride .’ So as a totally naive person, I thought I’ll see if someone has tried to do this. I found out the Truffaut had tried.” Eventually, he decided to go for it and ask the two-time Oscar winning writer if he could take on The Princess Bride . “I went to meet with him at his place in [New York] and he opened the door and said, ‘ The Princess Bride is my favorite thing I’ve ever written in my life – I want it on my tombstone. What are you going to do with it?'” Goldman did give his blessing that night. Newcomer at the time Robin Wright was cast the title character (aka Buttercup) opposite Cary Elwes, the man of her dreams (who she does some of that kissing with). The fairy tale aspect of the story came as a bit of a surprise for Wright who had not read the book by the time she departed for the set in England, but was taken aback by the fantasy element that rides through the story. When I read the script, I noticed all the stage direction which had things like lightning, sand, thunder, giant rodents and fire. I thought, ‘Oh we’re just going to do the dialog, I didn’t believe all that other stuff,” Wright said at Lincoln Center. “I went to England and had never read the book, thinking all that stage direction B.S. was just that. And then I had to put on my accent and there were attacking eels and all this stuff. It was just insane.”
