A Tale of Two James Bond Posters (For Skyfall)

Two very different posters emerged for November’s release of the 23rd James Bond installment, Skyfall . In one, current Bond incarnation Daniel Craig looks the upright perfectly dressed 007. Sure he has a gun, but he holds it more like a martini as he stands in perfect posture with the Union Jack and what appears to be the City of London in the background. The second one ditches the British flag for a more casual James Bond hitting the dirt in action (with blazer), with a side view of Craig pointing his pistol at an unseen assailant with large 007 emblazoned in the background. The two posters clearly meant to appeal to Bond fans on either side of the pond as clearly marked by their release dates. Upright Bond looking spiffy with tux and bow-tie (and British flag) of course will appeal to British fans as clearly marked by the October 26th release date. Rough and tumble shoot-em-up Yanks meanwhile, see James Bond in action, ready to shoot his nemesis as he risks tears and dirt as he hits the ground (but his hair still looks quite in place). EW surmised (http://insidemovies.ew.com/2012/09/17/dueling-skyfall-posters-james-bond/ ) that the British Bond poster played into U.K. stereotypes, which of course translates into something more formal. And of course the American version is meant to appeal to their comparatively more trigger-happy cousins in the former colonies. In the latest installment, Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. Sam Mendes is directing the film, which also stars Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, Helen McCrory, Ben Whishaw and Judi Dench. Compare/contrast the two posters and give your two cents. Which one do you like better?

Love, Marilyn, Argo & Not Fade Away Set For Hamptons Film Festival

Liz Garbus’ documentary Love, Marilyn will have its U.S. premiere at the 20th edition of the Hamptons International Film Festival in the tony Long Island, NY town of East Hampton, while David O. Russell ‘s Silver Linings Playbook will open HIFF in neighboring Southampton the following day. Both films debuted recently at the Toronto International Film Festival , with Playbook picking up the Audience Prize over the weekend. Fellow TIFF title Argo by Ben Affleck will screen as the five-day festival’s Centerpiece, while Paramount Vantage’s Not Fade Away will close out the event. Garbus’ Love, Marilyn will bow at HIFF October 4th, featuring an intimate and revealing portrait of the legendary Hollywood actress. HBO will air the film next year. The Weinstein Company’s Silver Linings Playbook centers on Pat Solitano (Bradley Cooper) who after a court-ordered stay at a psychiatric facility, moves back in with his parents (Robert De Niro and Jackie Weaver) and tries to win back his estranged wife, Nikki. And into the mix comes Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence) who is also volatile, but offers to help win Nikki back, but there’s a price. Ben Affleck’s Argo directs and plays Tony Mendez, a CIA agent who comes up with a daring plan to rescue six Americans hiding in the Canadian embassy in Tehran during the 1979 hostage crisis. Warner Bros. will release the film October 12th. The Sopranos creator David Chase makes his feature film directorial debut with Paramount Vantage’s Not Fade Away , closing HIFF on October 7th. Starring Sopranos star James Gandolfini, the film is set in the ’60s when the Rolling Stones appear on television and three best friends from the New Jersey suburbs decide to form a rock band. “These films, with their range and risk-taking creative choices, represent the pinnacle of what the festival has endeavored to achieve for the last 20 years,” said HIFF Director of Programming David Nugent in a statement. “The Oscar and Emmy recognition that each of these four filmmakers have already received is a testament to their vital creative force. I can’t wait to share their distinct visions with our audiences in the Hamptons.”

Ryan Lochte, Michael Phelps to Go Dancing With the Stars?

The London Olympics are almost over, but will we see swimming studs Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps square off on Dancing With the Stars next? A newly-retired Phelps said earlier in the week that he wouldn’t rule out following in the footsteps of Olympians who have gone on the ABC show. He’d probably do well, but if it’s up to his teammate and friendly rival Lochte, he’d best prepare himself for some stiff competition on the parquet. “Since I’m so used to competing against Michael Phelps, I’d go on [Dancing with the Stars] with him,” said Lochte, who won five medals in 2012. ” I could do Dancing with the Stars ! Yeah, I think so.” No doubt Ryan Lochte’s sister and mom in the audience cheering him on alongside Michael Phelps’ mom in what would be a rematch for the ages. Or at least reality TV. Who’d you rather see on DWTS?

Vida Guerra’s Rock-Hard Rear View [PICS]

Vida Guerra ‘s seat meat is so astounding, she won an Anatomy Award in 2011 for the Best Butt (Thong) despite the fact that her ass was a stand-in for star Ana de la Reguera on the second season of Eastbound & Down . Now that’s a powerful posterior. So it’s really kind of unfair that Vida is now entering her legendary butt into bikini contests where mere mortals must display their derrieres to be judged alongside Vida’s, which has grown quite muscular since we saw it last. Unfair to everyone but the audience, that is. See more pics of Vida Guerra in her first pro bikini competition after the jump!

John Waters at Outfest: ‘Yell Out the Grosses of All Their Hetero-Flops’

Recalling his early years mixed with Sixties feminists and Black Panthers, filmmaker John Waters again charmed and amped an audience at the start of Outfest late last week where he received the Los Angeles LGBT film festival’s 2012 Achievement Award. Never one to bore or to deliver a saccharine tale, he implored the audience to take a “Act Bad” and to use humor as a way of social dissent. He told a cheering audience to hail fashion insults outside the homes of anti-gay politicians and told budding filmmakers that if a studio says your story is “too gay,” then to get your “gay screenplay friends and go back to the studios and yell out the grosses of all their hetero-flops.” He talks about being a Yippie (‘to get laid’) in the ’60s and a hilarious chant in London at a protest against the pope. The 30th edition of Outfest runs through July 22nd in L.A.

Cissy Houston, Mariah Carey Lead Whitney Tribute at BET Awards

Cissy Houston and Mariah Carey were at the forefront of an emotional tribute to Whitney Houston at last night’s BET Awards . The latter kicked off the 19-minute event, recalling stories about Whitney – who tragically overdosed and died in February – and told the audience: “I miss my friend. I miss hearing her voice and laughter.” Monica and Brandy also took to the stage, singing multiple Whitney hits, while former Waiting to Exhale co-stars Angela Bassett, Lela Rochon and Loretta Devine honored their late friend. But it was Cissy who brought tears to the eyes of all in attendance. She sang a version of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and A-listers such as Beyonce and Soulja Boy were caught on camera crying. Race Matters: Gap Between Life Expectancy Of Blacks And Whites Reaches An All Time Low

US Racial Gap In Life Expectancy At All Time Low This is a good look: The gap in life expectancy between blacks and whites in the United States, long attributed to socioeconomic disparities and a range of other factors, continued its historical decline between 2003 and 2008 and is now the smallest ever, Canadian researchers say in a new report. The study, which drew on data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other sources and was published in the June 6 edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association, found an increase in life expectancy for both men and women, black and white. The researchers from McGill University in Montreal noted a convergence in the rate of deaths from HIV and heart disease as contributing to the narrowing of the life expectancy gap. However the biggest factor in the narrowing of the gap, the researchers said, was an increase in the number of deaths among whites attributed to prescription drug abuse. “It is mostly a good news story, since life expectancy has increased for both groups,” says Sam Harper, an epidemiologist at McGill and lead author for the study. However, the findings that point to prescription drug abuse are “a potential cause for concern.” The study found that the gap in life expectancy between black and white women of non-Hispanic origin closed to 3.7 years in 2008, down from 4.6 years in 2003. For men, the gap has closed to 5.4 years, down from 6.5 years. Life expectancy at birth for white men now stands at 76.2 years, up from 75.3 years, compared with 70.8 years for black men, up from 68.8 years. For white women, life expectancy rose from 80.3 to 81.2 years, and for black women from 75.7 to 77.5 years. The researchers looked at data compiled by the CDC and others and found that differences in the rates of heart disease, diabetes, homicide, HIV, and infant mortality remained the main reasons for the racial gap. Among men, heart disease and homicide were the two primary contributors; for women, the two contributors were heart disease and diabetes. But the narrowing recorded over the five-year span of data points to shifts in “unintentional injury” rates, as well as HIV and heart disease, the study’s authors conclude. Most notably, within the category of unintentional injury, fatal poisonings were the leading increase among whites – by 58 percent for men and 74 percent for women between ages 20 and 54. Dr. Harper said 80 to 90 percent of the unintentional poisoning deaths appear to be drug-related, and a big proportion of that due to opiates and abuse of prescription drugs such as oxycodone – a fact that mirrors growing public awareness of the problem of prescription drug abuse. The authors pointed out that in earlier studies that looked at the period between 1993 and 2003, the life expectancy gap between blacks and whites had narrowed by nearly two years for men and one year for women. Panties And Politics: Money Mitt Snags Campaign Donation From Victoria’s Secret CEO

Mitt Romney Gets Campaign Donation From Victoria’s Secret CEO Money man Mitt Romney will take it any way he can get it…….when it comes to campaign donations. Mitt Romney knows Victoria’s Secret. Romney, in New York today for some campaign fundraising, regaled donors with talk of his pledge to repeal the president’s health care law. Joined at Cipriani by New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, Romney also joked about going to the home of Les Wexner, the chairman, CEO and founder of Limited Brands Inc. in Columbus, Ohio. Wexner, a self-made billionaire, has enjoyed a boost in the stock price of his company’s chain of shopping mall stores this year. That includes Victoria’s Secret, the lingerie giant with the famously glossy catalogs. Wexner donated $250,000 in April to a super-political action committee, Restore Our Future, that supports Romney for election as president and opposes Barack Obama. “Some of you know Les Wexner,” Romney told his audience. “He owns Victoria’s Secret, among a number of other enterprises. He has a very, very large home,” Romney said. “I remarked to Les, ‘Never has so little fabric bought so big a house.’” Source Image via Wenn
