‘Dark Knight Rises’ Vs. ‘The Avengers’: Trailer Face-Off

Marvel’s heroes may have rocked the Super Bowl, but we pit them against Batman in The Weekly Rising . By Kevin P. Sullivan “The Dark Knight Rises” movie poster Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures The Super Bowl didn’t just mean victory for Giants fans. It represented a victory for comic book fans everywhere, because after years of waiting, we got to see the Avengers assembled. We can finally grasp what the event we’ve been waiting for will look like, and it rocked. What does this have to do with Batman and the upcoming “Dark Knight Rises,” you may ask? Well, a few weeks ago, we held a little tournament call MTV Movie Brawl , and the two biggest superhero movies of the summer faced off in the first round. Batman won by a narrow but significant margin, leaving little doubt about which movie fans want more. The win for “The Dark Knight Rises” could have been predicted, considering that Warner Bros. had already released two trailers and a prologue and that the previous film in the series was literally the biggest superhero movie of all time. But now that “The Avengers” has the benefit of a second and arguably better trailer, how do the two previews stack up? The Atmosphere The Marvel Universe movies have never been deathly serious. Sarcasm and humor underline most of the action. The trailer for “The Avengers” takes the same approach, avoiding the grave tone of Christopher Nolan ‘s Gotham and the “Dark Knight Rises” trailer. Nolan established a concrete look and feel for his Batman movies, and the trailer does its job to get that across. Both feel true to what fans expect from the respective franchises, so neither can really get the edge here. The Voice-Over Both short but equally sweet, the trailers start off with voice-over narrations from supporting characters in the series, Michael Caine ‘s Alfred and Samuel L. Jackson ‘s Nick Fury. They set the stage for the rest of the action in the trailer and solidly ground the new footage in the tradition of the previous films. Our vote goes to Michael Caine for a few reasons. He gets the benefit of a young boy creepily singing the national anthem, yes, but it’s more than that. Alfred has done so much more to be a beloved character. Fury just shows up at the end to tease awesome stuff you’ll have to wait years for. Alfred wins. The Villain “The Avengers” and “The Dark Knight Rises” take two very different approaches to handling their villains. Bane stands front and center, blowing up a stadium without any notion of subtlety. The alien invaders from “The Avengers” remain hidden, their true identities one of the film’s greatest mysteries. The benefit of not hiding who you are is that you get to do a lot more intimidating stuff in the trailer. Bane throws down while the aliens can’t stay onscreen long enough to get any action in. Victory goes to Bane. The Action We’ve dissected each aspect of the “Dark Knight Rises” trailer more times than we care to recalled, but a lot of it depends on how you feel about stadium demolition. “The Avengers” combines the best action bits from the previous movies and says, “Here, remember all this cool stuff? Now you get it in one movie.” But who will ever admit to not thinking that Iron Man always looks so freaking cool when he’s flying? It’s awesome every time. The Big Shot As much as we love Batman, you cannot compete with that circle shot of the entire “Avengers” assembling. You cannot. Yes, the Bat looks great and will make for great eye candy when “The Dark Knight Rises” hits, but that single shot from the “Avengers” trailer justified that movie’s existence in a matter of seconds. It was fanboy fantasies projected directly onto a screen. By our scientific calculations, that puts “The Avengers” and “The Dark Knight Rises” in a dead heat. You know why? Because they both look incredible, and everyone in the world will see both. ‘Avengers’ New Trailer Blasts Into Super Bowl

Marvel Studios debuts second full-length trailer during the game, as extended version appears on the flick’s official Facebook page. By Ryan J. Downey Chris Evans in “The Avengers” Super Bowl spot Photo: Marvel Captain America is from Brooklyn, New York, so he’s probably a Giants fan, right? Well, if the new trailer for “The Avengers” is any indication, Cap will have bigger things to think about than the Super Bowl this summer. The game was a big deal and all, but comic book movie fans also assembled in front of televisions and computers on Sunday (February 5) to watch a different group of uniformed supermen (and women) go to battle in ways we’ve never seen before. Marvel Studios debuted the second full-length trailer for the summer’s “Avengers,” and boy, did it deliver, true believers! An extended version appeared on the flick’s official Facebook page moments after the commercial aired during the game. Aliens, aliens, aliens! (Are those Skrulls? Kree? Asgardian something-or-others?) A Hulk-tastic climax, a bunch of alien craft getting smashed and the most action fans have seen yet from the Avengers: Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and the man who brought them together in post-credits sequences across several movies, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). The trailer opens with the familiar images of carnage on the city streets: cars overturned, explosions. The voice of Jackson as Fury says, “The world has changed.” Evans, as Captain America, looks unimpressed as he untangles his hand wraps in what looks like a midcentury-style boxing gym. “At this point, I doubt anything would surprise me,” he comments. “We are hopelessly outgunned,” Fury says, as the Marvel logo unspools and quinjets land on an aircraft carrier. As he finishes that sentence, we see that he’s standing with Thor (and presumably the rest of the team). There are more explosions brought on by an alien craft, followed by Tony Stark (Iron Man) rising with a look of steadfast determination. A close-up of Mjolnir flying into Thor’s hand, followed by thunder and lightning. Iron Man’s feet as they land on a rooftop. “Mr. Stark,” Evans says. Downey answers: “Captain.” “It’s time,” Jackson says. A close-up of Captain America’s iconic shield. Iron Man in action. As the montage continues, Thor helps Cap up off the street. Black Widow swings, then kicks, then peers over her shoulder while a car crashes between the shots. Thor lands on top of a quinjet! A large group of bad guys leap toward the city! Cap protects himself and his team from an explosion with his shield, Hawkeye shoots an arrow as he falls toward the street. Cap runs from a laser beam, Iron Man flies directly toward a small armada of alien craft. “I still believe in heroes,” Fury says. The camera then pans around all of the Avengers assembled around one another in the street. Hawkeye draws back his bow, Widow taps a clip into her pistol and Cap raises his shield. “The Avengers: That’s what we call ourselves,” Stark says casually, making a drink behind a bar as the film’s primary villain approaches him ominously. ” ‘Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’-type thing.” “I have an Army!” declares Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Thor’s half-brother from Asgard. “We have a Hulk,” Stark answers, shortly before the extended trailer’s money shot: the Hulk roaring, smashing through glass and leaping high into the air, destroying several alien craft at once. He didn’t yell “Hulk smash!” — but he might as well have. “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” writer/director Joss Whedon’s flick will unite Marvel’s Mightiest Heroes onscreen May 4. ‘Before Watchmen’ Comic Books: Cash Grab Or Something More?

‘Talk Nerdy’ team debates the merits of more ‘Watchmen’ stories and breaks down this week’s box-office competitors ‘Chronicle’ and ‘Woman in Black.’ By Josh Wigler “Watchmen” comic Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures After “Watchmen,” comic book fans were left under the impression that there would be no more stories featuring Rorschach, Doctor Manhattan, Nite Owl and the rest of their morally ambiguous crime-fighting pals. But that was before “Before Watchmen.” The announcement of new “Watchmen” comic books rocked the fan community to its core, and we’re dealing with the fallout in this week’s round of “Talk Nerdy” madness. Watch the episode below, and keep reading for further nerdiness! Who Watches “Before Watchmen”? Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ most popular characters are returning to the paneled page, but Moore and Gibbons are nowhere to be found. Instead, DC Comics has hired a crew consisting of Darwyn Cooke, Brian Azzarello, J. Michael Straczynski and others to spearhead “Before Watchmen,” a series of seven different comic book titles (each containing no fewer than four issues) debuting later this year. It’s a controversial decision to return to what many consider to be sacred material, sure, but in the eyes of the Nerds, it’s also a no-brainer: How do you turn down buckets filled with million-dollar bills, after all? Get their take on the news, plus some insight from MTV Geek ‘s very own Valerie Gallaher. Spidey Misses “The Avengers” Elsewhere in the superhero space, rumors involving a possible Spider-Man cameo in “The Avengers” were officially shot down this week during a Twitter Q&A with director Joss Whedon . “There is no Spider-Man cameo,” he declared. “But the Avengers do turn off the dark.” Even with a fork in the rumors, the Nerdy crew couldn’t help but wonder about the possibilities of Spidey yukking it up with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. See if they were for or against a visit from your friendly neighborhood web-head in your weekly dose of Nerdy. Potter Wears “Black,” Heroes Get Chronicled It continues to be an eventful year at the box office, with not one but two extremely geek-friendly movies hitting theaters this weekend. We’re talking, of course, about the Daniel Radcliffe-starring “Woman in Black” and the found-footage superhero film “Chronicle” from young director Josh Trank. But there’s another movie in the mix that one of our hosts wholeheartedly endorses, a decision so controversial, so outrageous, that his very Nerdy membership is now very much in jeopardy. Intrigued? THG Presents: 12 Movies to Get Excited For in 2012!

With the lowest box office gross in 16 years, 2011 was a year the movie industry would like to forget, despite a handful of mammoth hits. Will 2012 turn things around? Time will tell, but there are no shortage of exciting films landing in theaters in the next 12 months. From action thrillers to rom-coms to ‘tween fare, 2012 has it all! That said, here’s a look at 12 movies THG is particularly excited for this year: Men in Black 3 Trailer 12. Men in Black 3 Admit it, rolled your eyes when you first heard this was being made, but you’re excited. Or you were just fist-pumping from the start. Either way, here they come! 11. The Bourne Legacy Okay, we don’t really care about seeing this. We just want to see if President Obama slams Jeremy Renner’s performance at the White House Correspondents’ dinner. 10. What to Expect When You’re Expecting Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz and Glee’s Matthew Morrison make for easily the most-hyped must-see rom-com of the new year. J. Lo does it all, baby! The Avengers Movie Trailer 9. The Avengers So many of your favorite Marvel superheroes in one film? America hasn’t geeked out so hard since … every other blockbuster of the last five years. Still, awesome! 8. Paranormal Activity 4 The low-budget, high-earning franchise just got the green light for a fourth installment due out late this year, and fans can’t get enough. We’re freaked out already! 7. World War Z Fittingly, this Brad Pitt zombie-killing romp is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 21, 2012. Eat it, Mayan apocalypse calendar doomsday (and zombies)! The Hobbit Trailer 6. The Hobbit Peter Jackson returns to Middle Earth. We need not elaborate further, especially not after the trailer (above) raised already high expectations for the LOTR prequel. 5. Rock of Ages Tom Cruise proved he’s still got his box office mojo with M:I-4 . Can that translate into success for this hair band-era epic? We’ll be raising our lighters regardless. 4. The Dark Knight Rises Anne Hathaway as Catwoman. Badass Bane’s borderline inaudible voice. Christopher Nolan’s final chapter. The hype and subplots are building by the day. Snow White and the Huntsman Trailer 3. Snow White and the Huntsman Charlize Theron is the reason to see this Kristen Stewart vehicle, though we have high hopes for K-Stew as the title character. Only reason she’s not #1 and #2 here is …

It’s Double the Scarlett Johansson in New Russian Avengers Trailer!

Back in October, Marvel released the first trailer for Joss Whedon’s superhero supermovie Avengers , which will feature Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). My only complaint with the first trailer was that it didn’t give enough screen time to Scarlett Johansson ‘s Black Widow, whose role in the preview seemed to be limited to Sexy Background Extra in Black Spandex. Now, a foreign trailer finally gives Johansson’s Black Widow — one of the only females in the male-dominated superhero industry — an actual speaking part. The only problem… is that here, the lines are in Russian. Did I mention there aren’t captions either? Well, who needs captions to understand what is happening: Robert Downey, Jr. delivers some quippy dialogue, Captain America throws a shield, the Avengers bust a lot of bad guys and in the process, a lot of sh*t is blown up.

The Avengers Parody Trailer: Carnage in Cardboard

We’ve already seen one parody of the star-studded, snarky Avengers trailer that was released a couple weeks ago, but we think those Taiwanese geniuses have been topped by Swede Fest organizers Roque & Brian. The flying, lame one-liners, hair-whipping, and general superhero self-importance are all mocked here, and the closing quip seems to sum up the movie pretty nicely. Please watch, or you’ll be Thorry.

‘Avengers’ Trailer: Experts Weigh In

We asked movie and comic book experts to analyze first official trailer. By Josh Wigler Samuel L. Jackson in “The Avengers” Photo: Marvel The first trailer for “The Avengers” is finally here, offering our best look yet at what director Joss Whedon has in mind for when Earth’s Mightiest Heroes gather together on the big screen in May. For many fans, the trailer delivered on all its promises: extensive looks at the team in action, creepy narration from Tom Hiddleston’s Loki and even Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury stepping onto the battlefield with a bazooka in tow. For other fans — let’s just say the sweet melodic stylings of Nine Inch Nails wasn’t exactly what they had in mind for the trailer’s soundtrack, among other grievances. To get a better sense at what fans are thinking regarding the “Avengers” trailer, MTV News reached out to film and comic book experts across the blogosphere to weigh in with their thoughts on the latest Marvel teaser. The overall verdict, with few exceptions, is that the trailer is a rollicking success. “I’m a guy who likes to deal in specifics, and what I can say specifically is I honestly liked all of it,” said Jonah Weiland, executive producer at Comic Book Resources . “Sets an incredible tone and gives us a glimpse of the dynamic between the core members (I’m sure we’ll find out more about Black Widow and Hawkeye in due time). The action looks intense, but most importantly the characters all look like they ‘fit’ together — frankly, that’s one of the biggest challenges with this ‘team movie’ concept Marvel has been building to and it appears on first glance like they’ve succeeded in a major way.” NextMovie ‘s Kevin Polowy agreed that the “Avengers” trailer was the home run he was hoping for. “First off, I’m just relieved there’s some meat to it,” he said. “This is leaps and bounds beyond the unrevealing teaser trailer I think a lot of fans feared. Instead, we’re treated to glimpses of all the Avengers as well as Nick Fury and Loki, not to mention plenty of other bells and whistles: Menacing narration, cars blowing up, rocket launchers, trademark Tony Stark snark, more cars blowing up … lots of cars blow up in this trailer. Plus a look at that ‘rage monster’ the Hulk! I thought it rocked. This is really going to bring the house down at New York Comic Con.” From the perspective of HitFix ‘s Gregory Ellwood, Marvel hit the nail on the ol’ Shellhead when it comes to the movie’s big selling point. “It was fantastic to see Iron Man flying through the air again — Marvel knows how they are going to open this movie, and it’s with him,” he said. “The Downey Jr./Banner moment was cute (boy are those guys short, though), Hemsworth’s charm is always infectious, Sam Jackson is kickin’ ass like there are some snakes everywhere, Black Widow is in the house, we get our first glimpse of an Avengers Quinjet and a shot of Cap and Thor coming to blows.” But there are some areas the “Avengers” trailer did not deliver on, according to the experts, like getting the chance to spend more time with Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye, whose only previous Marvel credit is a brief cameo in “Thor.” “It would’ve been nice to see a little bit more Hawkeye,” said Caleb Goellner, senior editor at Comics Alliance . “I understand that the ‘Big Three’ and Black Widow are the established characters with the biggest draw, but what can I say? I like arrows.” Ellwood agreed, adding a dearth of Black Widow to his list of critiques: “It would be fantastic if Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner actually had a chance to speak. Although, obviously, many fans of the Black Widow might not care.” Another potential area of weakness: the movie’s central threat. Though we know Loki is the big bad in charge during “The Avengers,” we’re still in the dark as to the power he possesses. As Newsarama ‘s Lucas Siegel pointed out: “What’s the big threat? We saw Loki, who Thor took down on his own, and … exploding cars. It would’ve been nice to have a little bit more direct of a ‘big threat’ shown.” Having said that, Siegel added: “Of course, that’s what we all want to see, but it could also be a great thing to save for the movie itself.” “All in due time,” Weiland agreed regarding Marvel’s decision to withhold certain bits of key information. “This certainly isn’t the last trailer for this movie.” It certainly isn’t. Asked what they were most looking forward to seeing next from the Avengers, many of the experts agreed upon a certain shade of green. “Hulk, Hulk, Hulk!” Weiland said. “It’s a safe bet that some — if not much — of the NYC destruction seen in the trailer is caused by the Hulk and, look, we all want to see Hulk rampage. Sure, we got some of that in those two films, but I’m pretty sure in Joss Whedon’s hands, he’ll make those previous Hulk movies look like an episode of ‘My Little Pony.’ ” Another frequently cited item on the wish list: confirmation of Loki’s allies, long rumored to be the Skrulls, an alien race of shape-shifters prominently featured in Marvel Comics. “I’d like the next trailer to further tease what kind of threat the Avengers will face in 2012,” Goellner said. “Skrulls? Robots? Elves? Whatever it is, I want to know the team is up against more than Loki and some city streets exploding.” “Of course everyone still wants to know who’s helping Loki wreak havoc on Earth,” Polowy agreed. “Clearly some sort of intergalactic posse’s got his back. But I wouldn’t be surprised if Whedon and company keep that under wraps for as long as they can.” But if there’s one thing the experts could all agree upon? “Just the whole darn movie,” Siegel exclaimed. “Can’t wait!” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Avengers.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .
