Oscar Index: And the Winner is… Old

We’ve officially crossed the halfway point of this year’s Oscar Index — a bittersweet milestone where the team at Movieline’s Institute for the Advanced Study of Kudos Forensics takes a deep breath, orders a stiff drink, and then… orders another eight or so stiff drinks. While they slam their ways over the awards-season hump, join me for a quick run-through of where things stand this week.

Efron’s Pfeiffer Crush, Swank’s De Niro Moment, and 7 Other Revelations from the New Year’s Eve Junket

With the year 2011 drawing to a close, the stars of Garry Marshall’s New Year’s Eve were a sentimental — and cheeky — bunch talking up the portmanteau rom-com recently in Los Angeles. “When I stopped wanting my New Year’s Eve to be perfect, to ring in the New Year right, is when it started working out right,” admitted Hilary Swank , seated at a podium about as long as the credit roll for the star-studded holiday pic. At the other end of the panel, Zac Efron faux-wooed co-star Michelle Pfeiffer. “You’re coming out with me this year,” he winked at her. “I’ll show you how we do it.”

The Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame announced its 2012 batch of new inductees, which includes The Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Laura Nyro, Donovan, and first-time qualifiers Guns ‘N Roses. That’s a varied group, but they all have one thing in common: fantastic, often bizarre appearances in motion pictures. Join us as we revisit the cinematic work of these five acts, as well as identify the key ’80s actress with strong personal ties to three of the aforementioned inductees. I’ll buy you a Snickers if you can name her offhand.

Patton Oswalt on Young Adult, Great Chemistry and the Downside of Nostalgia

Patton Oswalt is hardly a screen rookie, having starred in various TV series, films, comedy specials; he’s not even a stranger to awards season, having voiced the lead in Pixar’s Oscar-winning Ratatouille . But there’s an unmistakable milestone quality to this week’s Young Adult , which places the actor and comic opposite Charlize Theron in a bitter stew of generational angst, woe and futility topped with a hint — but just barely a hint — of optimism.

Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie Red Band Trailer: Sick Show, Great Job!

Every once in a while it’s nice to see a “red band trailer” that could possibly disturb somebody. Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie does just that, as well as build nicely upon Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim’s Adult Swim series Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! , which ran for five seasons. In the trailer for the new movie, which will premiere at Sundance , we watch as Tim and Eric don fetching khakis, sever a finger, astound Zach Galifiankis, reveal a staggering sex toy and “honor their love” for each other. Disgusting and undeniably funny.

REVIEW: Dane Cook Is the Most Sympathetic Presence in Answers to Nothing, Which Tells You a Lot

Movies with multiple intersecting storylines aren’t exclusive to Los Angeles, but it’s a city for which they seem ideally suited, perhaps because it’s one in which incidental contact with the lives of strangers is less common and therefore more weighted with meaning. (Or maybe it’s just that L.A. has such an abundance of screenwriters sitting in coffee shops projecting potential narratives on passers-by.) Out of disparate threads we’re meant to draw common themes or emotional resonances, from Crash ‘s “everyone’s a little bit racist” to Magnolia ‘s ideas about loneliness and coming to terms with the past. Answers to Nothing , written and directed by Matthew Leutwyler ( Dead & Breakfast ), follows a group of linked lost souls navigating personal obstacles against the backdrop of a missing neighborhood girl, as they all come to discover that it’s OK to be an awful person, as long as you don’t tell anyone about it.
