Snoop Dogg Gets NBC Sitcom Deal

Rapper/actor will play a dad in the family comedy show. By Gil Kaufman Snoop Dogg Photo: Donna Ward/Getty Images He started out as a Long Beach hustler, made his bones as a breakout rap star and has played everything from a loveable stoner to Huggy Bear and an undead gangster in the 2001 horror flick “Bones.” But is America ready for Snoop Dogg family sitcom star? According to Deadline Hollywood the d-o-double g’s family comedy project has landed at NBC with a script in the works from veteran comedy writer Don Reo (“Blossom,” “Everybody Hates Chris,” “My Wife and Kids”). Snoop, the family man who has managed to strike a balance between lascivious rhyme dropper and pee-wee football coach, will play a dad in the show, which he will also produce. Snoop has already worked with Reo on the Fox sitcom “Brothers,” a show about a former NFL player on which he played the role of cousin Kenny the Lawyer. He’s already done a dry run as the man of the house in his E! reality show “Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood,” which followed his home life with his wife and three kids over two seasons. Snoop has seesawed between music and movies for years and was recently cast in the title role of the biopic “The Legend of Fillmore Slim,” the story of the 1970s San Francisco blues guitarist and pimp who was often referred to as the “West Coast Godfather of the Game.” Deadline noted that NBC has had mixed success with rapper sitcoms, ranging from the hit 1990s run by Will Smith in “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” to the notoriously awful 2001 pilot starring “Thong Song” star Sisqo and comedy icon Bob Newhart. Rihanna Beats Madonna’s Top 10 Chart Record

Rih now holds record for solo artist with 20 top 10 singles gained in shortest time on Billboard Hot 100. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna Photo: Samir Hussein/WireImage Pop icons better watch their backs because the new class of pop stars is eyeing your thrones. Last month, Katy Perry tied Michael Jackson’s singles record , and now Rihanna has beaten Madonna ‘s record for a solo artist achieving 20 top 10 singles in the shortest amount of time, according to Billboard . The music industry magazine reports that Rihanna is the fastest solo artist to reach 20 Hot 100 Top 10 singles thanks to her Talk That Talk lead single “We Found Love.” The Calvin Harris-produced track currently sits at #9 in its second week on the chart, after debuting at #16. The rise to the top 10 means that Rihanna has beaten the Queen of Pop herself, Madge, for the quickest rise. She first appeared in the top 10 back in June 2005 with “Pon De Replay.” Since then, she’s had 19 other songs in the top 10 in six years and four months, beating out Madonna by five months. But Rihanna’s achievement only applies to solo artists, as the Beatles hold the all-time record. The foursome took a very swift two years and seven months to amass 20 top 10 singles back in the 1960s. The news comes as Rihanna continues to hype up her Navy for the release of her album later this year. She shot a video for “We Found Love” last month in Northern Ireland. During the shoot, Rihanna made headlines when her “inappropriate state of undress” angered the farmer on whose land she was shooting the video. A release date for the clip hasn’t been announced. Rihanna had this message for her fans about the video: “#WFLvid I really cant stop thinking about this video we just shot! EASILY the BEST video I’ve done thus far! Definitely my fav 1, very powerful.” Related Artists Rihanna Madonna

Adele ‘Truly Devastated’ To Cancel U.S. Tour

‘I have absolutely no choice but to recuperate properly and fully,’ she writes after a hemorrhage in her vocal cord. By Kara Warner Adele Photo: MTV This year’s chart-dominating diva Adele has once again been forced to cancel tour dates due to illness. According to her record label, the “Someone Like You” singer suffered a hemorrhage in her vocal cord and she will now have to cancel her upcoming sold-out 10-city tour. The hemorrhage seems a more serious condition than the laryngitis she suffered when she was forced to cancel other dates earlier this year. Adele expressed sadness in being forced to cancel the tour via an emotional post on her website: “Singing is literally my life, it’s my hobbie, my love, my freedom and now my job. I have absolutely no choice but to recuperate properly and fully, or I risk damaging my voice forever. I have great confidence in believing you know how much this upsets me, how seriously I take it and how truly devastated and annoyed I am by this,” she wrote. “Wanting to do something so bad and not being able to is the most frustrating thing as I’m sure you know! “My voice is weak and I need to build it back up. I’m gonna be starting up vocal rehab [soon] and start building my over all stamina in my voice, body and mind,” she continued. “I will be back and I’m gonna smash the ball out the park once I’m touring again. I apologise from the bottom of my heart, sincerely I do. I know it’s not only disappointing because of the show, but it’s plane tickets, hotel bookings, birthdays, anniversaries and time wasted. But please have faith in me that this is the only thing I can do to make sure I can always sing and always make music for you to the best of my ability. Truly yours and yours only forever, Adele xx” The British songbird has had a killer year, smashing music records left and right She is the first female to land two singles and two albums in the U.K. top five simultaneously — which only the Beatles had achieved back in 1963. Her sophomore album, 21, is the first album in U.K. chart history to sell 3 million copies in one calendar year, and it has spent the most consecutive weeks at #1 ever by a solo female, 11, beating a record previously held by Madonna’s The Immaculate Collection. Adele also logged the most cumulative weeks with a U.K. #1 for a solo female (18), beating out Alanis Morissette and Shania Twain, who shared the previous record at 11 weeks. Justin Bieber has been trapped in his hotel room in Liverpool, as the hotel was mobbed around by his huge diehard fans. As a part of his Beatles tour in Liverpool, England, the fans came to know about his staying in the hotel ‘Hard Days Night’ and crowded at the hotel to sneak a glance at him. Casey Abrams Is Ready To Be A ‘Heartthrob’ On ‘American Idol’

Singer was called ‘sexy’ by judge Jennifer Lopez. By Gil Kaufman, with reporting by Kara Warner Casey Abrams Photo: Getty Images Jennifer Lopez has made a career of knowing what her fans think is sexy. So when she told bearded “American Idol” top 13 finalist Casey Abrams that she thought he had serious sex appeal, the singer took the praise in stride. The 19-year-old upright-bass player and film-camp counselor almost missed out on last week’s show due to an emergency hospitalization for stomach pains, but he’s had a good time with all the talk about his looks on the show. “Am I ready to be a heartthrob? Yes,” he said at last week’s afterparty for the top 13. “I’m ready. We’ll see how it goes.” Given his embrace of sex symbol-dom, he was asked what his plan was to take on magazine cover boy Justin Bieber. “I guess I’m gonna have to start dancing, I have to learn the drums, I’m gonna have to do this with my hair,” he joked, pulling down his unruly ‘fro onto his forehead in an attempt to approximate the Bieber swoop. The good news is that the multi-instrumentalist already plays the drums, so he can check that off his list, and he hinted that he may pull out an electric bass at some point — or even a sitar! On Wednesday night’s show , Abrams joked that he had the right (read: grizzled) look to take on notoriously disheveled rock icon Joe Cocker’s version of the Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends,” and on an earlier show, he quipped, “I just want to show the world that guys like me are sexy.” “You’re sexy, Casey,” Lopez assured him last week when Casey performed an unhinged version of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put a Spell on You” to acclaim from the judges’ panel. “Do you know that? Somebody wants it bad,” she added in a nod to what she said was Abrams’ obvious dedication to remain in the competition. Do you agree with J.Lo that Abrams is sexy? Let us know in comments below! Paul McDonald Brings Nashville Cool To ‘American Idol’

Scruffy top 24 semi-finalist wowed judges and became a Twitter trending topic after Wednesday’s Las Vegas episode. By Adam Graham Paul McDonald performs on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: FOX The coolest contestant of season 10’s “American Idol” has stepped out in the form of Paul McDonald. The 25-year-old from Nashville, Tennessee, was voted through to the “Idol” top 24 on Wednesday’s (February 23) episode, and his laid-back, easygoing style makes him an early standout among the semifinalists. The scruffy-bearded McDonald, who auditioned for “Idol” in his hometown of Nashville, was first seen on Wednesday singing the Beatles’ “Blackbird” during the Las Vegas round with his duet partner Kendra Chantelle. McDonald’s smooth vocals — which have sort of a Jason Mraz-meets-Mike Posner quality — caused judge Steven Tyler to exclaim, “Yeah! I love his voice,” mid-song, while Jennifer Lopez turned to Tyler to show him the goose bumps on her arm. Lopez later praised McDonald’s “soft, beautiful tone,” saying it “cut right through” and made him stand out. His voice wasn’t the only thing that made McDonald stand out. For his final audition, McDonald sported a white Nudie Suit, complete with embroidered roses and that looked like something out of Jeff Tweedy’s closet. Not only that, but he chose to forgo popular logic and sang an original song for his final shot in front of the judges instead of a cover. The guy couldn’t blend into the background if he tried. “I’ve gotten this far based on, you know, just doin’ my thing, and if it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be,” McDonald said in voiceover. It was meant to be: In his final sit-down with the judges, they praised his unique qualities and said while they’re not quite sure where he’ll land in the competition, it will be those same attributes that could potentially take him far. “We’re gonna bank on that and put you through,” Lopez told him. McDonald took the news in stride; raising his arms in victory, he let out a hearty laugh before thanking the judges. And while he said he’s spent the last few weeks “relaxin,’ hangin’ out,” now, he admitted he’s got some work ahead of him. “I gotta learn some songs!” he said. While he works on those new songs, his fanbase is already starting to grow. By the end of Wednesday’s episode, McDonald was a worldwide trending topic on Twitter, and he already had at least one former “Idol” contestant in his corner. “Paul McDonald is the man,” “Idol” season-eight finalist Matt Giraud tweeted . “Really impressed me.” What did you think of Paul McDonald? ‘American Idol’ Reveals First Batch Of Top 24

There were plenty of tears — mostly from Jennifer Lopez — as early faves like Chris Medina failed to make the cut. By James Montgomery Contestants perform Beatles songs on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: FOX In its 10th season, “American Idol” has already gone coast-to-coast (and, uh, Milwaukee), in search of the next pop superstar. So when it came time to whittle their list of hopefuls down to the top 24, a few additional miles probably weren’t going to hurt anyone. On Wednesday night’s (February 23) show, “Idol” trekked from Hollywood to Las Vegas — where the 61 remaining contestants were hacked down to just 40 — and then back to the show’s hometown of Los Angeles, where, at long last, the voyage came to a close with the unveiling of the 24 singers who will compete for this season’s crown … or, at least, that’s what we were told. But before we got to the cliffhanger climax, we had to make the trip from Hollywood to Las Vegas. The action on Wednesday’s episode began immediately following the oft-treacherous Hollywood Week , which meant that those who had survived didn’t have long to celebrate. Rather, they boarded buses and headed down to the Mirage Resort and Casino in Vegas, where they performed songs from the Beatles’ legendary catalog. And the results of those performances were mixed. Singing in pairs and trios, some “Idol” frontrunners kept up the pace — Jacob Lusk, Haley Reinhart and Naima Adedapo thrilled on “The Long and Winding Road”; Tim Halperin and Julie Zorilla turned in a sweet version of “Something”; and Paul McDonald and Kendra Chantelle wowed the judges with their soulful take on “Blackbird” (“So beautiful … I really loved it,” Jennifer Lopez raved) — while others fell off. Those in the latter category included the trio of TaTynisa Wilson, Jerome Bell and Lakeisha Lewis, who puzzled the judges with their version of “I Saw Her Standing There,” and (most notably) the duo of hotly-tipped teens Melinda Ademi and Thia Megia, who failed to wow with “Here Comes the Sun.” Others who stumbled in Vegas included the trio of Lauren Alaina, Scotty McCreery and Denise Jackson, who fumbled through “Hello, Goodbye” (first before a cadre of producers that included Interscope honcho Jimmy Iovine, Alex Da Kid and Jim Jonsin, and then on the Mirage stage), and quirky Ashley Sullivan, who decided to get hitched at Vegas’ iconic Little White Chapel before her performance, and then whiffed on “We Can Work It Out.” At the end of the two-day Vegas performances, most of those who stumbled were sent packing — not to mention memorable contestants like White House intern Molly DeWolf Swensen, goofy Carson Higgins and rocker dude Caleb Hawley — as the “Idol” judges cut the remaining 60 down to 40 … and then put them back on the bus for Los Angeles, where the Top 24 was revealed in dramatic fashion. Or, part of it was anyway. Because though “Idol” producers had spent most of the two-hour episode touting that big reveal, in the end, we only learned the identities of a handful of the 24 finalists: Adedapo, Reinhart and McDonald plus Clint Jun Gamboa and Ashthon Jones. And while that swerve was somewhat shocking, it was the news of who didn’t make the final cut that really caused jaws to drop. Namely, breakout star Chris Medina , who won over viewers — and the “Idol” judges — with his dedication to his fianc

‘American Idol’ Finds Golden Girls In San Francisco

Final audition night has lots of strong female contestants and one standout male in James Durbin. By Gil Kaufman Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson on “American Idol” Photo: FOX The “American Idol” train pulled into San Francisco on Wednesday night (February 9) for its final shot at discovering a diamond in the rough in the same city where the show found Adam Lambert two years ago. And, wouldn’t you know it, they found the man who just might prove to be the straight-young-dad version of Lambert in James Durbin, along with a gang of really strong female contenders. Ukrainian singer and sexy video vixen Inessa Lee, 22, was not one of them, though. She seemed more primed for next American, um, adult entertainer, with her belly dancing, yoga poses and an especially wobbly “All Out of Love” by Air Supply. Steven Tyler was charmed, but even her Betty Boop voice and their shared Eastern European ancestry wasn’t enough to punch a ticket to Hollywood. “Cute, you get 110 percent; but singing … eesh,” Tyler said. Duffy has been good to a number of auditioners this year, and a song by the Brit did the trick again for raven-haired Tucson, Arizona, dance-studio manager Brittany Mazur, 21, as well, who brought a smile to the panel’s faces with her rich, soulful voice. There were also unanimous yeses for jazzy Lara Johnston and sensitive brawny belter Matthew Nuss, whom Tyler dubbed a “diamond in the rough.” Stefano Langone had one of those stories “Idol” cannot resist. The unemployed 21-year-old was told he’d never walk again after a horrible car crash, but he rallied and brought his positive energy to Marvin Gaye’s “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” nailing his audition thanks to some powerful, if a bit nasally, vocals. “Nice voice, dude, got a little ‘hood up in there … I like that,” Randy Jackson said, praising Langone’s streetwise phrasing. Jennifer Lopez had props for his matinee-idol looks and star quality too. Big round glasses and LBC attitude got karaoke host Clint Jun Gamboa some attention in the audition room, but it was his high-and-tight, gospel&B-flavored cover of Travie McCoy’s “Billionaire” that put him through. “The notes and the way you sang that song was brilliant,” Tyler said, with Jackson calling Gamboa one of the best auditions of the San Francisco trip. The night’s signature wackadoodle was unemployed El Paso, Texas, clown Kenneth Berba, who ran into the room wearing a homemade lion outfit that earned him an immediate no. That, of course, set up the obligatory horrible-singer montage, highlighted by a maniac in an incredibly detailed homemade Transformer costume that blew the judges away more than his silly try at “Born to be Wild.” Not easily impressed by other people’s footwear, Lopez loved Julie Zorrilla’s golden shoes. The 20-year-old student comes from a well-heeled family that left Colombia to escape shakedowns from the nation’s guerrilla fighters in the 1990s, and her brilliant smile and upbeat attitude was almost as engaging as her emotionally rich cover of the “Idol” staple “Summertime.” Breathy and leisurely, Zorrilla put plenty of attitude into her take on the “Porgy and Bess” classic. “Fabulous, beautiful, great range,” Tyler told the alluring beauty. “And great star quality.” Lopez appreciated her confidence, and Jackson liked how she switched up the arrangement. We’ve had precious few rockers so far this season, and it seemed like long and curly-haired blond belter Dave Combs, 25, might have the stuff. His rough-and-tumble attempt at the Beatles’ “Oh! Darling” just didn’t do it for Tyler (wearing a Beatles T-shirt, no less), who just seemed annoyed at how off the melodic mark Combs was. He was the first of a string of fellas who blew it and got harsh rebukes from the Aerosmith singer. A week after her house burned down, strawberry-haired free-spirit barista Emily Anne Reed, 26, proved to be plenty cute and fun to look at, but her falsetto attempt at Harry Warren’s jazz tune “You’re Getting to Be a Habit With Me” split the judges. Lopez loved her unique, high and squeaky tone, but Tyler thought the melody left a lot to be desired. Randy disagreed and complimented the unusual tone, which left it up to Lopez, who agreed to give Reed one more shot. The producers saved a doozy for the final audition spot. The hard-knock story told by James Durbin, 21, was almost too much to believe. He grew up barely knowing his bass-playing dad, who was always on the road, and was raised by his mom after his father died of a drug overdose. Later diagnosed with both Tourette syndrome and Asperger’s syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism, Durbin turned to music to help calm his sometimes-rattled nerves. The unemployed young father with the faux-hawk had everything to prove to the panel, and he immediately grabbed their ears with a wailing, Lambert-esque moon-shot take on Led Zeppelin’s “You Shook Me.” And, in what will likely be another boost to Aerosmith catalog sales , he asked if he could give “Dream On” a shot as well. Tyler dug it, shaking his head along, his eyes closed as he took in Durbin’s booming, emotion-laden voice. “I like you, I like your voice, my god, what a range,” Randy said. “Wow, that was over the top, wow, that was so, so good,” Tyler added. “You sing from where you’re supposed to sing from, from feeling, from heart, from our soul, from the need to feel and make others feel,” Lopez gushed. And so it goes. Next stop, Hollywood Week, which kicks off Thursday night, promising much more elation, heartbreak and stress-induced meltdowns.
