Laurence Olivier’s Greatest Role

“Olivier spent his last 30 years as a workaholic, reproducing the same rigorous performance schedule that had characterized his rise to fame. He worked so intensely, and for so long, that many interpreted it as a means of making penance for his behavior toward Leigh. Still, there are dozens of plays, movies, roles, and dalliances this piece hasn’t even touched. I could spend another 4,500 words of your time simply describing his 1960s career, the influence of his filmic Shakespeare, or the dozens of accounts, some more substantial than others, that he was bisexual. But for all of his genius, all of his work in sustaining and rejuvenating the theater before, during, and after World War II, his passion for Leigh — and hers in return — remains his defining feature.” [ The Hairpin ]

Random Ridiculousness: Facebook “Oversharing” Is As Satisfying As Sex For Some People

Facebook-aholics, do you agree with this one?? From bad breakups to bathroom updates to the amount of bacon your best friend can eat in a single sitting, we’ve all grown used to oversharers spilling their guts both online and off. “I share pretty much everything,” says Laura Keesee, a 25-year-old public relations account coordinator from Orlando, Fla. “From my random ADD thoughts to when some food has upset my stomach to details about my relationship. I think oversharing is part of my personality.” It’s also intrinsically rewarding, according to new research out of Harvard University that used fMRI scans to show how our brains react to sharing information about ourselves with others. “The Internet has drastically expanded the number of mediums through which we can talk about ourselves to other people,” says Diana Tamir, a graduate student in the Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience Lab at Harvard and lead author of a study published today in the journal PNAS. “We were interested in why people engage in self-disclosure so seemingly excessively. The hypothesis we wanted to test was whether or not this behavior provided people with intrinsic or subjective value — did it feel good to do it.” As it turns out, it feels so good, our brains responds to self-disclosure the same way they respond to pleasure triggers like food, money or sex. Tamir and her colleagues conducted five studies involving nearly 300 people, most of them from the Harvard and Cambridge community. In some studies, participants were asked to disclose their own opinions while being scanned using fMRI, or functional magnetic resonance imaging, a technique that directly measures the blood flow in the brain, thereby providing information on brain activity. In others, participants were asked to complete certain behavioral tasks in exchange for varying amounts of money. Study subjects, as it turns out, were willing to go without 17 to 25 percent of their potential earnings if they could reveal info about themselves to others. “We called this the ‘penny for your thoughts study,’” says Tamir. “We wanted to know if people would pay money to engage in this behavior — to share information about themselves with other people — and it turns out they will.” Brain scans of participants revealed even more about the rewards of self-disclosure. Lawrence Winnerman, a 42-year-old project manager from Seattle, says he definitely finds oversharing rewarding. “If I post something on Facebook or say something that I think is going to be really funny and also particularly revealing about myself, I’m looking for a reaction and a laugh,” he says. “And I get really disappointed if I don’t get one. I know I’m absolutely doing it for the value of the rewards.” Damn, even 42-year-old project managers get a tingly sensation when people “Like” and interact with their FB updates. SMH. Thoughts?? The Side-Eye: Shaunie O’Neal Releases “Basketball Wives” Statement Regarding Recent Ratchetness On The Show

She shoots… She spins… But does she score? Shaunie O’Neal Releases Statement Regarding Negative Depictions Of Black Women On “Basketball Wives” With the African-American community chomping at the bit over the negative depictions (fighting, lawsuits , mockery of monogamy) of Black women on “Basketball Wives” Shaunie O’Neal just had to say something… Via VIBE : As the executive producer of the controversial reality show Basketball Wives, Shaunie O’Neal released an exclusive statement on some of the unladylike behavior that has consumed recent episodes. Since the drama on the popular VH1 show has reached new levels (Jennifer Williams is suing Nia Crooks, Evelyn Lozada’s assistant, for assault), the BBW head expressed her personal thoughts on the matter. “I’m extremely happy that Basketball Wives continues to have another successful fourth season. As the ratings have been through the roof since our season opener, fans continue to tune into the lives of Evelyn, Tami, Jennifer, Royce, Suzie and myself. As there is always controversy and indifference projected on the show, because we are all individual personalities, I always hope that people will find that as much as you may agree or disagree with the opinions, the behavior, [and] even our different taste in shoes, you are taking a look inside the lives of four complete different women. I will never say I agree with some of the behavior between my girlfriends on the show, but if we were to edit certain things out the show would be scripted and not reality. As a woman of color with kids, I am very aware of myself, but I also have to be aware that my choices cannot be the same for everyone on the show and I have to respect that. I hope the fans feel they see a balance and know we have always been real with our stories, even though it may not always be a positive portrayal of adult women but real women nonetheless. I look forward to developing other media platforms in the future and hope that fans will continue to support.” Unlike some of her friends and cast mates, she chooses not to eclipse her good character by becoming physically violent. O’Neal wants to maintain her role as an example to young women, especially as she is a mother and businesswoman. She continuously gives back to the community and was, most recently, spotted lending a hand at the Los Angeles Mission for their annual Easter day festivities. *cough* Bullisht!*cough* There Shaunie goes again talking about balance. We peeped her lil attempt to show her Mom of the Year behavior a couple episodes back with Mimi’s birthday party but other than that it’s been a bunch of cussing and slapping and wine bottle throwing. Shaunie, let’s keep it real boo boo (in our Evelyn voice) bird’s of a feather flock together. Y’all can’t be that different. More On Bossip! Report: MPAA’s Piracy Figures Only Overstated by $50 Billion

Yikes : “[T]he Motion Picture Association’s claims of $58 billion in actual US economic losses and 373,000 lost jobs came from this press release . These numbers originated at a think tank called the ‘Institute for Policy Innovation’ – an organization that Businessweek once profiled in an article called ‘ Op-Eds for Sale .’ In it, an IPI analyst freely admitted to taking payoffs from disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff in exchange for writing ‘op-ed pieces boosting the lobbyist’s clients.’ The IPI’s president supported this behavior, saying it was neither wrong nor unethical, and dismissing those who apply ‘a naïve purity standard’ to the business of writing op-eds. This doesn’t necessarily mean that MPAA lobbyists paid the IPI to conjure up these numbers. But whatever their genesis, they’re not easy figures to support.” [ TED Blog via The Dish ]

Pedo-Files: Jerry Sandusky Asks Court For Permission To See His Grandkids

Would you let your kids see this nasty character??? Jerry Sandusky , the former Penn State assistant football coach charged with child molestation, asked for court permission on Friday to see his grandchildren. Under conditions of his bail, Sandusky is currently prohibited from visiting his 11 grandchildren. A motion filed in Centre County court seeks to allow Sandusky to contact his 11 grandchildren by email, phone, text and Skype, and to let them visit his central Pennsylvania home if accompanied by a parent. Authorities allege Sandusky sexually abused 10 boys over a 15-year span. Sandusky has said he is innocent. He is currently under house arrest and forbidden from having contact with anyone under 18. “Jerry’s grandchildren want to see him, and he very much wants to see them,” Sandusky’s lawyer, Joe Amendola, wrote in an email to The Associated Press. A 12th grandchild is expected “in the near future,” according to the motion. They shouldn’t allow him to see nothing but the four walls of a jail cell! Source More On Bossip! EWWWW!!! *Raw Video* Joshua Jones Accused Cop Killer Acting Crazy In Court: “Does It Look Like I Can Afford An Attorney… Got Dammit!” [Video]

He’s the man investigators say shot and killed Master Public Safety Officer Sandy Rogers. On Monday, Joshua Tremaine Jones stood before Judge Donna Williamson for a bond hearing. “Do you want to be screened for an attorney?” asked Judge Williamson. “I don’t care!” Jones yelled back, grunting several times afterwards. After mouthing profanities to the few reporters in the room, he cursed at the judge, too. “Do you have the income to hire an attorney on your own?” she asked him. “Does it look like it? G** d******!” Jones answered back. It was something Cpt. Troy Elwell with Aiken County Sheriff’s Office had never seen before. “What I saw in court today was a very disturbing individual. He appeared to show no remorse for the actions he had taken. He was disrespectful to the judge and others in the courtroom while he was there,” Elwell said. Elwell says it’s essentially a slap in the face to an already wounded community. “It’s a crime that can’t be undone. It’s a terrible incident. And again, he just showed that much more disrespect for everybody involved in it today,” he said. Joshua’s father, James, was also there and acknowledged the public would view his son as a “monster”. He described his very son’s behavior as the work of Satan. “It’s got to be the work of Satan. It’s a spirit world that is way beyond us,” he said. James Jones said his son may possibly plead insanity. He says his son has a condition they’ve sought help to combat. Jones says Joshua was being treated at Aurora Pavilion Behavioral Health Services before he was released to his care last fall. But the behavior today didn’t sway Elwell’s opinion. “I don’t think I could get any stronger feelings toward him, no matter how he acts. What happened in the courtroom today really doesn’t have any effect on my feeling toward the individual,” Elwell said. Jones’ bond for the weapons charge was set at $10,000. A circuit court will have to decide the bond for the murder charge. In the rare case they do set his bond for murder, he’ll still be on hold for possible charges in Richmond County. His father says the behavior may be because he’s off of his medications, but he wasn’t entirely sure about that. Jones has had a troubled past. He pleaded guilty in 2009 to weapons charges and served 108 days in the Aiken County Detention Center. Just last year, he was charged with giving false information and carrying a concealed weapon. His father says he shot himself in the head last year and said son stabbed him 10 years ago. Jones was 16 years old at the time. Turn the page to see the spectacle in court.
