Joe Biden: Mitt Romney Will "Put Y’all Back in Chains"

Vice President Joe Biden raised eyebrows at a Virginia campaign rally today when he said Mitt Romney and his economic ideas would “put y’all back in chains.” Of the Republican ticket and newly-minted VP nominee Paul Ryan ‘s budget plan, Biden said: “They’ve said it. Every Republican’s voted for it.” “Look at what they value. Look at their budget and what they’re proposing. [Romney] said in the first 100 days, he’s going to let the big banks once again write their own rules – unchain Wall Street … They’re going to put y’all back in chains.”

Maddow Guest Harris-Lacewell Suggests ‘Crazy Uncle’ Biden Spout Off and Obama Pretend to Disagree

Hope and change, meet business as usual. Princeton professor Melissa Harris-Lacewell unveiled this curious possible strategy for Democrats heading into the midterms when she appeared on Rachel Maddow’s MSNBC show Sept. 8 — MADDOW: One last last question on the specifics here. The president himself is planning to be very visible from all accounts, multiple campaign events, the first planned press conference in a long while. Is he still the Democrats’ best campaign asset or do Democrats need somebody else out there who can throw sharper barbs than a sitting president is really allowed to? Followed by Harris-Lacewell responding, as if hearing the question from Maddow for the first time — HARRIS-LACEWELL: You know, look, I love to see President Obama out there. He loves giving the speeches, he’s a great campaigner, we know that. But I have to say, one of the reasons I was a big supporter of Joe Biden for the vice presidential position is because I always thought that Biden could provide a real asset in a moment like this. Look, don’t get me wrong but Joe Biden has a sort of a reputation for being Crazy Joe and one of the best things about your crazy uncle at a family reunion is that he says the one completely honest thing that everybody’s thinking, that none of the people with an actual filter will in fact say. So, I’m a big fan of kind of deploying the Crazy Uncle Joe strategy. Send Vice President Biden out there, let him kind of get tough, let him say things that are somewhat outrageous and then, you know, let President Obama do his typical strategy of reaching across the aisle and, you know, he’ll look and say oh come on, Joe, that may have gone too far. But I’m a big fan of, let’s get Crazy Joe out there. MADDOW (beaming with approval, as if for the first time she’s heard this): The Crazy Uncle Joe strategy, TM, Melissa Harris-Lacewell. HARRIS-LACEWELL: Why not?! (laughs) MADDOW: Very good. I want the T-shirt franchise on that! What the heck, Harris-Lacewell guffaws, oblivious to the inherent dishonesty of her suggestion. Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t this the sort of thing Obama vowed to campaign against , back when a grasping, credulous portion of the electorate considered him an agent of genuine change?  In other words, Biden could act as ventriloquist dummy, saying what Obama seemingly can’t but actually is. Why not? (slap knee here) No one will see through that.

Biden Tells Leno He Wanted To Send Rush Limbaugh to Russia in Spy Swap

Vice President Joe Biden on Friday told Jay Leno that he wanted to send Rush Limbaugh to Russia as part of last week’s spy swap. As a special guest of the “Tonight Show,” Biden was asked why we traded ten of their spies for four of ours.  “Well, we got back four really good ones,” joked Biden. Leno then showed a picture of Anna Chapman and asked, “Do we have any spies that hot?” Biden stammered, “Let me make it clear, it wasn’t my idea to send her back…I thought maybe they’d take Rush Limbaugh or something” (video follows with transcript and commentary, relevant section at 0:55):  JAY LENO, HOST: I want to ask about this Russian spy swap. We traded ten for four. Now, I know our math skills are not as good as they should be, but that doesn’t seem fair. Why, why did we trade ten for four? VICE PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN: Well, we got back four really good ones. LENO: Yeah. [ Laughter ] BIDEN: And the ten, they’ve been here a long time, but they hadn’t done much. LENO: Are they just sort of like moles, they just sort of plant people here and say, “See what you can find out?” Or do they come with a specific mission, “You’re going to go work for Lockheed” or “You’re going to work for…” BIDEN: The former. LENO: Yeah. Okay. Now, show him, this Russian woman here, let me ask you something. And you would know this, Mr. Vice President. Do we have any spies that hot? [ Laughter ] BIDEN: Let me make it clear, it wasn’t my idea to send her back. [ Laughter ] Wasn’t mine. [ Cheers and applause ] I wanted, anyway. [ Laughter ] I thought maybe they’d take Rush Limbaugh or something. LENO: There you go. BIDEN: You know what I mean? That would have been a good — a good move. This would be a great joke if it didn’t have such underlying truth to it. After all, the way this administration has treated its adversaries in the media, you think they would ship all their detractors to foreign lands if they could.

Slow Joe Biden’s Subpar Saturday: Part 2 — The Slippery Growth Assertion

As pathetic as Joe Biden’s thin-skinned “Why do you have to be such a smart-a**” comment to a Milwaukee-area custard shop manager was yesterday (covered at NewsBusters ; at BizzyBlog ), it wasn’t even the Vice President’s worst Wisconsin Saturday moment. A far worse moment, in terms of familiarity with the truth, occurred as Biden rewrote history and unilaterally revised economic growth upward in a speech to Democrats in support of Senator Russ Feingold’s reelection. In a CBS News online report by Stephanie Condon that I suspect will not make it to the airwaves Biden was dour and downbeat, while misstating economic reality: Biden: We Can’t Recover All the Jobs Lost Vice President Joe Biden gave a stark assessment of the economy today, telling an audience of supporters, “there’s no possibility to restore 8 million jobs lost in the Great Recession.” Appearing at a fundraiser with Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wisc.) in Milwaukee, the vice president remarked that by the time he and President Obama took office in 2008, the gross domestic product had shrunk and hundreds of thousands of jobs had been lost. “We inherited a godawful mess,” he said, adding there was “no way to regenerate $3 trillion that was lost. Not misplaced, lost.” … Biden said today the economy is improving and noted that in the past four quarters, there has been 4 percent growth in the economy. Over the last five months, more than 500,000 private sector jobs were created. I have no idea how Biden arrived at his $3 trillion figure; I’m guessing Ms. Condon doesn’t either. One very minor error: The Vice President’s claim that “more than 500,000 private sector jobs were created” is false, but barely. On a seasonally adjusted basis, it’s 495,000, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The big error: GDP growth has been nowhere near 4% during the past four quarters, no matter how you define “the past four quarters” (compounding was ignored for simplicity’s sake): The 2.5% estimate for 2Q10 is based on the assertion in this Friday Associated Press report that “Economists expect slower growth ahead” from 1Q10’s annualized 2.7%. Biden’s economic growth assertion is nowhere near true no matter how one interprets it. If 2Q10 growth comes in at an annualized 5.5% or higher, readers can come back and crow that Biden was really right. Good luck with that. Stephanie Condon should have known better than to blindly relay Biden’s false assertion. Does anyone else besides me think that she would have checked it out if Dick Cheney had said it instead?
