Wait, What? Taraji P. Henson Says Her Gay Cousin Taught Her How To Be A Lady

Taraji P. Henson CR Fashion Book If you haven’t mastered the fine art of being a lady in public, you may want to seek out the services of a gay man to take you from Ratchet Rachel to Classy Cassie. It pretty much worked for Taraji P. Henson. We all have one person to thank for Taraji’s consistent and effortless slayage on the red carpet, and that’s her now-deceased gay cousin. The Emmy-nominated Empire actress is currently showcasing her feminine beauty in the pages of CR Fashion Book. Inside, Taraji reveals that it was actually her cousin who taught her all she knows about being a lady, and why she tries to carry a clutch when stepping out. Let me take you on a trip. My cousin had been battling AIDS and he passed away on the same day that my character [Queenie from The Curious Case of Benjamin Button] died. This is my cousin who took me to drag shows. He told me about down-low brothers, he may have saved my life. He also taught me about being a lady. He told me ladies carry clutches on the red carpet, so sometimes when I don’t carry a clutch I feel I’m disgracing him. It’s the simple stuff you miss in a person. No one ever taught me how to properly put toilet tissue on the spool, with the flap hanging toward you, not underneath. He taught me that, and it lives with me to this day. Whenever I go into someone’s bathroom and their tissue isn’t the right way, I look up in the sky, and I go, Damn! So ladies, who taught you how to be prim and proper? Also, hit the flip for more of Taraji’s hot CR Fashion Book shots. CR Fashion Book

Bring Your Bae: First Ever #NetflixAndChill Festival Brings Over 21,000 To Philly This Weekend

Netflix And Chill Festival Brings Thousands To Philly The first ever #NetflixAndChill Festival is set to take over Philly this weekend! Via Independent UK : ‘Netflix and Chill’ has become somewhat of a phenomena. If you’re not aware of the Americanism – probably because you refuse to trawl Reddit and don’t have hip teenage friends – let me enlighten you as to what it means. Their are two primary meanings. The first is pretty obvious – it means to watch Netflix and chill out with your mates. The second, the primary reason the phrase has become such a wide spread meme, is to invite someone from the opposite gender over to, well, um… Even with the risk of a mass ‘Netflix and Chill’ gathering becoming something out of 50 Shades of Grey, that hasn’t stopped the social app Knock Knock (no, we’ve never heard of it either) organising the very first ‘Netflix and Chill Festival’. The highly anticipated event will take place at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia on the 25 September and currently has over 21 thousand people attending on Facebook. However, if you want to attend you’ll need to request an invite. Make sure to wrap it up before you #NetFlixAndChill this cuffing season!

Race Matters: Black Children’s Educational Expectations Are More Likely To Be Underestimated Than Whites

Dr. Ebbie Parsons III Writes About Learning Expectations In Black Schools Dr. Ebbie Parsons III has made it his personal mission to improve the institution of education and has proudly impacted the lives of more than 100,000 children around the world while delivering unprecedented business results to the organizations in which he has served. The co-founder of Yardstick Learning has recently penned a profoundly eye-opening piece for HuffPo on the educational expectations placed on Black youth vs. white youth in our schools today. The basic point of my argument is that “proficient” is such a low standard that not a single child who scores “proficient” in all areas according to the standards will actually be college or career ready upon matriculation from high school. The expectations are too low for any of these kids to rely on “proficiency” to help them get admitted into a competitive college and there’s nothing about any of these standards that are actually preparing these kids to be career ready for any type of position deemed to be on a “career track” by any American standard. These standards aren’t good enough for White students so why should schools be allowed to tout them as success for low-income Black and Brown students? How many times have you seen schools say that they’ve transformed or turned around a school by getting up to 70% proficient? Or what about the schools that brag that 100% of their kids are proficient? I implore you to peel back the onion to find out what percent of those kids are advanced proficient. And trust me, if that number is less than 10% and they’re touting 100% proficiency then you should know that the school is nothing more than a testing mill preparing kids for standardized assessments. Dr. Parsons goes onto argue that affluent communities (more likely to be disproportionately white) tend to teach analysis, critical thinking and offer more advancement opportunities to their students. Affluent communities try to build critical thinkers who are exposed to a vast array of opportunities and curriculum that explores all of the core content areas with a critical eye. They’re not teaching rote memorization of a standard so that kids can do well on an assessment. They’re teaching kids to actually “get it”. Many of them may even have fewer students that score proficient but nearly all of the students who are proficient actually score “advanced proficient” on an assessment because they have a firm understanding of the material. We must choose our children’s education “eyes wide open” and understand when the wool is being pulled over our eyes. The institutional racism that is “proficient” only continues to keep Black and Brown children from ever experiencing the real American dream. We need to understand the standards in order to challenge the standards. This is our responsibility as this determines our future! Do you think the standard is set too low for many students in Black communities so that their skill set leaves them in a position to just be “proficient” or far below their white peers??

Drake Covers The Fader’s 100th Issue, Talks 2015 Glo-Up, Becoming A Target, And Breaks His Silence On Meek Mill’s Twitter Fingers

Drake Covers The Fader Issue 100 In the latest issue of The Fader , Drizzy lets his beard flourish and talks about the joys of finding a new way to flow and how the material on If You’re Reading This really wasn’t quite as exciting for him as it seemed to be for the rest of the world. Drake also finally spoke for the first time on ending Meek Mill’s career addressing Meek in the studio two times to very little response… “I’m just gonna bring it up ‘cause it’s important to me,” he says. “I was at a charity kickball game—which we won, by the way—and my brother called me. He was just like, ‘I don’t know if you’re aware, but, yo, they’re trying to end us out here. They’re just spreading, like, propaganda. Where are you? You need to come here.’ So we all circled up at the studio, and sat there as Flex went on the air, and these guys flip-flopped [about how] they were gonna do this, that, and the third.” He recorded “Charged Up” that very night and released it the next day on the same episode of OVO Radio that saw the debut of “Hotline Bling.” “Given the circumstances, it felt right to just remind people what it is that I do,” Drake says, a proud smile creeping into his face, “in case your opinions were wavering at any point.” When a reply to “Charged Up” didn’t come, Drake could hardly believe it. “This is a discussion about music, and no one’s putting forth any music?” he says, speaking with a furrowed brow, as if reliving his incredulity. “You guys are gonna leave this for me to do? This is how you want to play it? You guys didn’t think this through at all—nobody? You guys have high-ranking members watching over you. Nobody told you that this was a bad idea, to engage in this and not have something? You’re gonna engage in a conversation about writing music, and delivering music, with me? And not have anything to put forth on the table?” And thus…Drake made the conscious decision to end it altogether and we were all blessed with “Back To Back.” It was then that he decided to just go ahead and do another song. “I was like, ‘I’m gonna probably just finish this.’ And I know how I have to finish it. This has to literally become the song that people want to hear every single night, and it’s gonna be tough to exist during this summer when everybody wants to hear [this] song that isn’t necessarily in your favor.” It’s cold in the 6, huh?
