Race Matters: UAB Sorority Girl Ejected After Post Bragging About “No N*ggas” Pledging

Nothing shared on social media stays private for long… UAB Student Kicked Out Of Sorority After Racist Snapchat A University of Alabama sorority girl got kicked out of her chapter after sharing with her Snapchat friends just how excited she was that no Black women had joined her Greek-letter organization on the last rush. Via HuffPost : A University of Alabama student was removed from her sorority this week for sending a racist Snapchat photo bragging that no black women were accepted to her Greek house. The executive headquarters for the Chi Omega Fraternity confirmed Tuesday the woman who sent the image is no longer a member of the UA chapter. Rumors circulated online that the Snap was Photoshopped; Chi Omega spokeswoman Whitney Plumpton told The Huffington Post the image being passed around (visible below) is “not the original Snapchat image,” although the original did contain the slur used in the altered version. The Snap, captioned “Chi O got “NO n*ggas!!!!!” over a selfie, was allegedly sent on bid day, which was Saturday. The women’s faces are blurred in the photo circulating online. The University of Alabama Greek system is under increased scrutiny this year, following the national attention in 2013 when sorority members began going public about how black women were systematically blocked from joining traditionally white houses, largely due to alumnae influence. Eventually, black women did begin joining the sororities, including a handful at Chi Omega. The university hosted its largest sorority rush in history this year, and offered bids to 21 black women, according to the Associated Press. Plumpton confirmed Tuesday that the original image did have the slur included, and refocused attention to the statement the national organization sent out on Monday: “What was expressed is absolutely reprehensible and completely inconsistent with Chi Omega’s values and policies,” the national organization said in the statement. “Chi Omega took swift disciplinary action in accordance with the organization’s policies and procedures. The woman who took the photo is no longer a member of the chapter.” Kicking her out doesn’t change what she and her little friends think…or who they do and don’t want joining their chapter. This likely speaks to a larger attitude within the Greek organization on that campus. We wonder how welcome the handful of Black members they do have truly are…

#NewBlacks: African-American Celebrities Who Believe They Are Beyond Their Burden Of Blackness

Are you a #NewBlack ? African American Celebrities Who Think They Are New Black It must be nice to live in this bleak world rocking designer rose-colored sunglasses because race doesn’t seem to exist. Pharrell Williams recently defined the phenomenon of being a Black person who is able to live beyond their own skin color: “A ‘new black’ is someone who doesn’t blame other races for our issues. The ‘new black’ dreams and realizes that it’s not a pigmentation; it’s a mentality. And it’s either going to work for you, or it’s going to work against you. And you’ve got to pick the side you’re gonna be on.” Oh. Too bad racial profiling, structural racism and bigots don’t give a mighty morphing fawk if you consider yourself a “pre-owned black” or “new black.” Hit the flip to check out some African American celebrities who believe their Blackness ceases to exist just because they are famous, wealthy or live in their own little unicorn and rainbow filled race-free bubble….

Trayvon Martin’s Mother Pens Open Letter To Mike Brown’s Mother For TIME Magazine – “If They Refuse To Hear Us, We Will Make Them Feel Us”

Sybrina Fulton Pens Open Letter To Mike Brown’s Family The only person that can truly understand what Mike Brown’s family is going through are people who lived the same horror themselves. Sybrina Fulton, mother of slain teen Trayvon Martin, has stepped into the conversation about the killing of Mike Brown — addressing the family as someone who has lived their same struggle . Via TIME : To The Brown Family, I wish I had a word of automatic comfort but I don’t. I wish I could say that it will be alright on a certain or specific day but I can’t. I wish that all of the pain that I have endured could possibly ease some of yours but it won’t. What I can do for you is what has been done for me: pray for you then share my continuing journey as you begin yours. I hate that you and your family must join this exclusive yet growing group of parents and relatives who have lost loved ones to senseless gun violence. Of particular concern is that so many of these gun violence cases involve children far too young. But Michael is much more than a police/gun violence case; Michael is your son. A son that barely had a chance to live. Our children are our future so whenever any of our children – black, white, brown, yellow, or red – are taken from us unnecessarily, it causes a never-ending pain that is like unlike anything I could have imagined experiencing. Further complicating the pain and loss in this tragedy is the fact that the killer of your son is alive, known, and currently free. In fact, he is on paid administrative leave. Your own feelings will bounce between sorrow and anger. Even when you don’t want to think about it because it is so much to bear, you will be forced to by merely turning on your television or answering your cell phone. You may find yourselves pulled in many different directions by strangers who may be well-wishers or detractors. Your circle will necessarily close tighter because the trust you once, if ever, you had in “the system” and their agents are forever changed. Your lives are forever changed. However with those changes come new challenges and opportunities. You will experience a swell of support from all corners of the world. Many will express their sympathies and encourage you to keep fighting for Michael. You will also, unfortunately, hear character assassinations about Michael which I am certain you already have. This will incense and insult you. All of this will happen before and continue long after you have had the chance to lay your son to rest. I know this because I lived and continue to live this. I have devoted my life to the comprehensive missions of The Trayvon Martin Foundation – including providing support to families that have lost a young child to senseless gun violence regardless of race, ethnicity or gender. I will support you and your efforts to seek justice for your Michael and the countless other Michaels & Trayvons of our country. The 20 Sandy Hook children. Jordan Davis. Oscar Grant. Kendrick Johnson. Sean Bell. Hadya Pendleton. The Aurora shooting victims. The list is too numerous to adequately mention them all. According to The Children’s Defense Fund, gun violence is the second leading cause of death for children ages 1-19. That is a horrible fact. Facts, myths, and flat out lies are already out there in Michael’s case. Theories, regardless of how ridiculous, are being pondered by the pundits. My advice is to surround yourselves with proven and trusted support. Through it all, I never let go of my faith, my family, or my friends. Long after the overwhelming media attention is gone, you will need those three entities to find your ‘new normal.’ Honor your son and his life, not the circumstances of his alleged transgressions. I have always said that Trayvon was not perfect. But no one will ever convince me that my son deserved to be stalked and murdered. No one can convince you that Michael deserved to be executed. But know this: neither of their lives shall be in vain. The galvanizations of our communities must be continued beyond the tragedies. While we fight injustice, we will also hold ourselves to an appropriate level of intelligent advocacy. If they refuse to hear us, we will make them feel us. Some will mistake that last statement as being negatively provocative. But feeling us means feeling our pain; imagining our plight as parents of slain children. We will no longer be ignored. We will bond, continue our fights for justice, and make them remember our children in an appropriate light. I would hate to think that our lawmakers and leaders would need to lose a child before protecting the rest of them and making the necessary changes NOW… With Heartfelt Support, Sybrina D. Fulton Very moving words.

#JusticeForMikeBrown: Hacker Group “Anonymous” Releases Ferguson, St. Louis Police Dispatch Audio To Public [LISTEN]

The hackers have really been delivering on their promise to expose the Ferguson PD … St. Louis County Dispatch Tapes From Day Of Mike Brown Killing Released A vigilante hacker group simply titled “Anonymous” has been working to unearth the truth Ferguson, MO officials are seeking to hide in the wake of the police shooting death of unarmed teen Mike Brown. Their latest discovery is St. Louis county Police and Emergency dispatch tapes from the day Brown was killed. They paint a tragic picture of how dismissive the authorities were about the shooting. Via their video description: We are Anonymous. These files compiled in this video contains audio of St. Louis police dispatch from the date of August 9th 2014, the day Mike Brown was murdered by a Ferguson PD officer. We have released these tapes to the public so as they are able to get a sense of the atmosphere the moments before and the hours after Mike Brown was shot. These raw audio files have been compiled and long quiet moments have been cut down. Time stamps are available within the video. Incident begins at around noon..(9:08 time stamp) ST. LOUIS COUNTY POLICE DISPATCH AUDIO TAPES, AUGUST 9TH 2014 11:05 AM – 6:05 PM, INCIDENT IS REPORTED AS “CROWD CONTROL PROBLEM” AT 12:05PM, NO SHOOTING MENTIONED UNTIL IT IS CALLED IN TO DISPATCH BY WITNESS. FERGUSON PD DENIES IT KNEW ANYTHING AT THAT TIME. NO EMS WAS CALLED. It’s pretty long (nearly two hours of audio) but at around the 11:26 time mark, you can hear the dispatcher being confused about an alleged shooting she is hearing about on the news that Ferguson PD is reporting no knowledge of. You can take a listen here: It’s a little chilling to know that the cops 1. didn’t bother to report the incident as it occurred and 2. never even attempted to have EMS come attend to Brown at all. Another Black Man In The White House? Dr. Ben Carson Emerges As Potential Republican Presidential Candidate

Could we have two Black presidents in a row? Dr. Ben Carson A Potential Presidential Candidate Dr. Ben Carson, a retired neurosurgeon and conservative political figure, just might be a contender for the 2016 Presidential race. Apparently Dr. Carson wowed a conservative crowd at a Republican Club meeting recently and they fervently urged him to put his bid in. Via PageSix : We’re two years away from the next election for President of the United States, but the race is already heating up. Among the contenders: Dr. Ben Carson, who gave it good to President Obama at last year’s National Prayer Breakfast — and who had more digs for the commander in chief last Wednesday at the Women’s National Republican Club on West 51st Street. “People say to me, ‘Dr. Carson, you’d make a great president, but Obama has ruined it for another black candidate.’ I say, ‘He’s half-white, so I guess he ruined it for them, too.’ ” Carson, who retired as director of pediatric neurosurgery at John Hopkins Hospital, gave a speech, answered questions from a crowd of about 300 and signed copies of his sixth book, “One Nation: What We Can All Do To Save America’s Future.” “A PBS reporter asked me, ‘How come you don’t talk more about race?’ I said, ‘Because I’m a neurosurgeon. When I open up a patient’s skull, I’m working on what makes him or her a human being — not his skin. ’” Carson also had quips on several other subjects, including legalizing marijuana (“Data show it reduces IQ. We have enough stupid people. We don’t need to create more of them.”) and unions (“They will strangle the goose that lays the golden egg for that last egg.”). The partisan crowd was hanging on every word, and urging Carson to run for president. Well he certainly seems to pander well to Republican views. Do you think he has a chance?

For Discussion: Is The Confederate Flag As Hateful A Symbol As A Swastika?

Photo: Instagram Hate speech disguised as “Southern Pride?” Is The Confederate Flag As Hateful As The Swastika? Confederate flags flew as the South fought in defense of slavery, while Swastikas were the symbol of the Third Reich as they terrorized Jews in Germany. Do you think the flags are equal in the shameful bits of history they represent? Many Southerners (of many races) fly the flag in their yards, on their cars, or rock in on their clothing as a “symbol of their history.” But are they sending a racist message regardless of what they say their intention is? Peep this writer’s take on the flag as a hate symbol. Via WashingtonPost : Hubert Wayne Cash, 65, a Navy veteran and retired phone company worker, spent an hour at his home Tuesday explaining why he allowed the recent erection of a giant Confederate battle flag in his wooded back yard north of Fredericksburg overlooking busy Interstate 95. “I’ve got 50 ancestors who fought in the Civil War,” Cash said. “I honor their heritage.” The gray-bearded Cash was gracious and thoughtful. I applaud his willingness to answer skeptical questions from an incorrigibly pro-Yankee news columnist. But I still think Cash and his allies are wrong to display the flag. It’s the principal emblem today of a hateful cause — the protection of slavery — from which it cannot be divorced. Germans don’t use Nazi swastika flags to honor their dead from World War II. The same logic applies to the Confederacy, even if the Nazis’ sins were worse than those of Jefferson Davis and company. Of course, the United States can’t ban the Rebel banner outright, as German law prohibits the display of swastikas. The First Amendment protects freedom of speech. But the public can and should try to shame the Confederacy fan club into scrapping the emblem of a wicked purpose and leaving it to be displayed only in museums and history books. There are plenty of other ways to commemorate one’s Rebel ancestors. What about plaques, flowers or the Virginia state flag? The Confederacy was big on states’ rights. Here’s my main complaint about the flaggers, which Cash did little to dispel: Like many in the “Southern heritage” movement, they aren’t just committed to honoring individual Rebel soldiers. They insist also on trying to whitewash the Confederacy by saying the Civil War was about something other than slavery. Do you automatically assume those who fly the flag do so with racist intentions? Or…is there a way for Southerners to display the flag as a part of their heritage — separate from it’s association with slavery?

Race Matters: Should Black People Boycott Ridley Scott’s All-White Egyptian Film ‘Exodus’?

A film set in Africa with no Black main cast…hmm… Is Ridley Scott’s “Exodus” Film Racist? By now you’ve probably heard about Ridley Scott’s film adaptation of the Biblical Moses story, “Exodus.” But you may not have noticed the way in which Hollywood has gone out of its way to dip this fully-African tale into a cinematic vat of Whitenicious . Peep what one writer has to say about this film’s casting and not-so-thinly-veiled attempt to weave white heroic-ism into an exclusively-African tale. Via Medium.com I went to see Get On Up and there was a preview for Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods And Kings movie about Moses’ story in the Bible. The first thing I noticed was that all the main characters are White. Moses is White. The Pharaoh is White. Tuya is super White and Joshua is Jesse Pinkman. Not only are these characters who are supposed to be Africans White, they’re not even remotely tan. They’re pearly White. Christian Bale is Moses, a former slave in Egypt who was using SPF infinity sunscreen because he’s still Gotham City White. You can convince me that a guy can shake a staff and make it rain locusts but I refuse to believe someone who grew up in Egypt in the sun doesn’t have a tan at least. But this is all Hollywood stuff, right? White guys are always cast in these roles and we’re all here to throw praise on a cast full of White guys no matter where or when they live. It would have been annoying enough if Scott stopped there. But look at the rest of the cast: Not only are all the main characters White, but the servants, thieves and assassins are played by Africans. Guys. This is racist. Ridley Scott is one of those guys who’s apparently hellbent on historical accuracy but doesn’t care enough to cast a person of color as Moses or a damn African queen while simultaneously filling out the rest of the movie with Black servants and thieves. I could even accept him going the Louis CK route of “the best actor gets the job regardless of if race makes sense” and casting Merly Streep as Tuya, Guillermo Del Toro as Moses and Choi Min-Sik as Moses for all I care. But to make the main characters White and everyone else African is cinematic colonialism. It’s creating a piece of historical “art” that carries on oppressive imagery that’s helped shackle entire countries and corners of the world. I’m so damn sick of Hollywood and its acceptance of these oppressive images. If studies have shown the way that perpetual violence in movies begets violence in America, then what about perpetual maintenance of the White savior standing over the ethnic servant/villain/imbecile? What damage is this creating for the American psyche? How am I supposed to feel when all the messiahs, last samurais, African kings and saviors are White? Yikes. Did Hollywood think casting Black people in a film about African people set in Africa would make the picture too “race-themed?” What do you think? Will you go see this film?
