Is Common The New King Of All Media? [EXCLUSIVE]

See original here:

Lonnie Rashid Lynn, Jr.  has turned multitasking into an art form. One day he is sitting on a panel with Robin Williams , Elijah Wood and Hank Azaria trading jokes about their frosty, eco-friendly new movie Happy Feet 2 . The next day the artist more commonly known as…Common… is in the studio finishing up his ninth album, The Dreamer The Believer . Between all of this he is promoting his memoirs “One Day It’ll All Make Sense” and a new TV Show, “Hell On Wheels”, where he plays a freed slave working on the railroads in the 1800s. More than Common…Extraordinary! How does someone keep all of these disparate interests straight in their head, especially coming from an industry that places a premium on being “real”? “You go to those different places inside of you,” Common tells TheUrbandaily.com between bites of his lunch at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. “I think a lot of us as human beings express these different qualities; love, anger, fear. All those things…joy. The way I was raised I came up seeing the streets but I was also educated in private school. So I’ve been able to express myself in different ways.” The cliche is that luck favors the prepared but it’s still an impressive feat to have a book, an album, a movie and a television series coming out in the same quarter. However, Common is humble about the whole convergence, chalking it up to an unseen hand at work that is certainly not the illuminati. “Everything is happening when it’s supposed to,” he says. “It’s God’s divine order that all this came out at the same time. I did Happy Feet 2 a year and some ago. The album was supposed to come out earlier and it’s coming out in December. I thank God for the way people are reading the book and now I’m on a panel with Robin Williams and Elijah Wood. This is what I do and I love it.” In Happy Feet 2 Common voices a penguin named Seymour. His son Atticus is a little b-boy that would give Chilly Willy a run for his money on the mic.  With this role Common joined a growing list of rappers voicing cartoons like Queen Latifah , Fat Joe and Xzibi t all because a previous opportunity fell through. “[Director] George Miller and I were going to work on J ustice League for Warner Brothers,” he explains. “It didn’t go through but he and I built a good relationship and I hold him in a high regard. I saw Happy Feet and thought it was really fresh. I was impressed and loved it. He called me and said he wanted me to [voice] this character in Happy Feet 2 and I said I’d love to. I haven’t been part of any films where the whole family could go and enjoy it.  This was my first opportunity to do animated voice over work. It was incredible.” Common, who is the father of a 14-year-old girl has personal experience with playing a protective dad. “She was into it but she’s in her teenage stage now. She wanted to go see The Ides Of March , ” he says with a laugh. “But she was happy that I was  a part of the film. Just the other day we were riding around and she said this is everywhere.” Common may have better luck getting her to tune into his AMC series, “Hell On Wheels”.  In the small screen Western Common plays Elam Ferguson, a biracial ex-slave working on the Union Pacific Railroad. “‘Hell on Wheels’ is an incredible show because it deals with all these different people of different cultures and backgrounds coming together to build this railroad,” he shares.  “It’s the American dream being built and [it shows] how some people relate. Some get a long, some don’t, it’s like a reflection of America today. My character is real strong. It’s a character you haven’t seen depicted in film or TV from a Black person in that era. Maybe Denzel in Glory , but it’s still a little different.” All of these many moods seem to manifest themselves on Common’s new album, and rightfully so. On the combative “So Sweet” he boasts lines like “Hip-Hop’s master cleanse and I’m gonna get my sh*t off…”, which is the antithesis of the more ethereal “ Blue Sky.” But like his many outlets in the world of entertainment there are many sides to Common waiting to be revealed. “Doing a song like ‘Sweet’ was just me too, and being able to go in my imagination and be a penguin is also an aspect of my creativity. I always feel proud to represent hip-hop in whatever world we go to.” Happy  Feet 2 will be in theaters on Friday November 18th. Snooki Speaks on Jersey Shore, Spinoff, Book, "Brand"

It would be very easy to dismiss Snooki as a national joke. And we will. The self-styled “guidette” warns there’s more than meets the eye, though. “I know and that’s my secret. No one knows that I’m smart,” Snooki says. “I am going to start filming a spin-off with Jenni [Farley] soon and I want to have my own business and have my own brand. Be sure of yourself, don’t let anyone bully you, be an independent, strong woman or boy.” Words to live by. Confessing that she was bullied in high school, Snooki, who is now a bestselling author with her book Confessions of a Guidette , got the last laugh. “Oh yeah, and now I am a strong woman! The new season of Jersey Shore starts January 5, and we are back in Seaside and back in the normalness,” she adds. “Not all the drama like in Italy. I’d rather be home at the Jersey Shore .” Wouldn’t we all. To celebrate her return, Snooki has launched a new fragrance that smells just like the Jersey Shore – cigarettes, booze and kooka. Just kidding. Probably. “There’s a little kiwi in it … there’s beach flower, like tanning lotion, and assorted woods like the boardwalk,” she says. Delightful. Just like her.

‘Rum Diary’ A ‘Love Letter To Hunter,’ Johnny Depp Says

Aaron Eckhart and Giovanni Ribisi also talk about writer Hunter S. Thompson’s impact on the film. By Ahsika Sanders, with reporting by Kara Warner Johnny Depp in “The Rum Diary” Photo: FilmDistrict From the first few moments of the trailer’s island music, bright colors and eye-catching castmembers, “The Rum Diary” looks like a whimsical vacation to paradise realized onscreen. Based on the novel by Hunter S. Thompson during the author’s own travels to Puerto Rico in the late ’50s, the film casts “Pirates of the Caribbean” leading man Johnny Depp as the alcoholic, struggling writer-turned-journalist Paul Kemp, who struggles to find a balance between work, play and the island’s increasingly tumultuous politics. When MTV News caught up with the film’s stars, they explained how the film is a fitting tribute to Thompson’s final story, as well as to his legacy. “The whole thing is really a love letter to Hunter,” Depp said, whose friendship with Thompson led to the discovery of the late author’s unpublished manuscript and eventually the idea to make it into a film. “The film from the very inception, opening that cardboard box and finding the manuscript to ‘The Rum Diary’ and saying to Hunter, ‘What’s wrong with you? Why don’t you publish this?’ and him saying, ‘Well we should produce this,’ the chain of events that happened over the years and then us trying ignorantly to drum up the money was just a very funny experience,” Depp said of the story’s journey from page to screen. “Even though my partner is not right next to me, we’re going to still produce this film together, and ultimately we did,” Depp said of deciding to move forward with the production after Thompson’s death in 2005. “Even if his presence, if he wasn’t visible, we still produced the film together.” Aaron Eckhart stars alongside Depp in a second villainous role since his stint as Harvey “Two-Face” Dent in “The Dark Knight.” Depp’s love and passion for Thompson and his work made the film a more meaningful experience, Eckhart said. “I think that Johnny has taken up the mantle and has preserved his legacy and is now offering all those people out there who have never heard of Hunter, an opportunity to be familiar with his work,” he said. “Hunter was always there. He always had his chair, his empty chair on set with us, and Johnny and [director] Bruce [Robinson] had a ritual that they did everyday … but his spirit was always there.” “Avatar” bad guy Giovanni Ribisi added that for him, the story was about “having a voice and maintaining your independence and your individuality” and that Thompson’s perception of that ideal is universal and timely. “I think Hunter S. Thompson was such a strong factor in a time in the sixties, he was almost the fulcrum for that [time], where people were waking up,” he said. “It was about a rebellion against this capitalist structure and the mise en scene in the story. In the book you know where America is coming and really doing its thing to this beautiful culture Puerto Rico, that setting is just incredible. That for me is what it’s about. I think, as much as I hate to say it, I think it’s very apropos to today’s psychology.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Rum Diary.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Mobb Deep Confirm Nas Collabo On Black Cocaine

They also hook up with Bounty Killer for ‘Dead Man’s Shoes,’ duo reveals on ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Mobb Deep Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Mobb Deep have quite a few notable collaborations with rap heavyweights like 50 Cent , Lil Kim and Raekwon, but when it comes to chemistry, their in-studio vibe with Nas is unmatched. The Queens rap duo appeared on Wednesday’s (October 26) “RapFix Live,” and confirmed to host Sway that they will once again be hooking up with God’s Son on their upcoming November EP, Black Cocaine. “We got Nas on the album, we got Bounty Killer on there — that’s it so far,” Prodigy said. “It’s just like a warm-up project, so we didn’t want to put too many people on there. It’s just a Mobb Deep thing, really.” Dancehall star Bounty Killer appears on the menacing “Dead Man’s Shoes” and Nas on an unnamed track. “We worked with Nas because that’s the home team,” Prodigy said. “I know people miss hearing that Mobb Deep/ Nas collaboration, because every time we do a song, it always comes out real good and stands the test of time, always.” In April, shortly after Prodigy was released from his three-year prison bid, Esco and the Mobb hooked up for the Alchemist-produced “Dog Sh–,” but before they could get together on a song, Prodigy and Nas had to iron out some minor differences. “Yeah, it was a little something, but it wasn’t nothing serious,” P said. “It wasn’t serious enough for us to just stop making music together and stop hanging out and messing with each other.” Upon getting home, Prodigy — who wrote about his up-and-down relationship with Nas in his book, “My Infamous Life” — gave Nas a call to patch things up. “Different personalities clash sometimes, but when you’re family, nothing’s stronger than that bond,” Havoc said. “I feel like Nas is like family, so we can get through whatever.” Are you glad Mobb and Nas are working together again? That’s All Folks!! Looks Like Lindsay Blo-Han May Actually Be Headed To The Whoscow For A “Vacation”

LiLo just can’t get right… According to TMZ reports : In a blistering hearing, Judge Stephanie Sautner revoked Lindsay Lohan’s probation, had her cuffed and set a hearing for November 2, when Lindsay could end up getting as much as a year-and-a-half in jail. Judge Sautner said Lindsay Lohan was completely responsible for being thrown out of the Downtown Women’s Center, where the judge told her she must complete probation. The judge concluded Lindsay violated her probation, scoffing time after time, incredulously reading from the Probation Report — the section where Lindsay told the Probation officer she didn’t find the Women’s Center “fulfilling.” The word “fulfilling” REALLY set Judge Sautner off! She was clearly disturbed and confused at the fact that LiLo thought that she should be BENEFITTING from her community service. TMZ broke the story … Lindsay got kicked out of the Women’s Center after being a no-show 9 times. The Judge also doubted Lindsay attended sessions with her shrink once a week, as the Judge required. The judge dismissed Shawn Holley’s argument that Lindsay had to go abroad to work — where she was seen partying on several occasions — and that’s why she missed a number of community service appointments, saying, “She’s supposed to be an actress, from what I hear.” Ouch! “…from what I hear”?? Sounds like the Judge isn’t too impressed with Linds and her “acting” Judge Sautner recalled all the screw ups Lindsay has had in her court cases, reminding Holley that “Probation is a Gift.” As we reported, Lindsay’s bail bondsman appeared in court and will be bailing her out shortly. The judge could barely contain her contempt for the Probation Dept., which gave Lindsay a glowing report. Judge Sautner said the Probation Dept. had no authority to send Lindsay to the Red Cross to do her community service and said Lindsay would not get credit for the time she served there. Although Judge Sautner noted that due to overcrowding in jails Lohan’s potential 18 month sentence could be reduced, as angry as she was in the video we wouldn’t be surprised if she threw the book at her anyway
