‘Eat Pray Love’: Everything You Need To Know

While the book-club set may know the ins and outs of the Julia Roberts film, we have a guide for moviegoers making spiritual trek to the multiplex. By Kara Warner Julia Roberts in “Eat, Pray, Love” Photo: Sony Pictures The book-club/gal-pal movie of the summer is finally here! Not to say that “Eat Pray Love” is meant only for female audiences — it isn’t — but given the film’s also-opening box-office competition on Friday (August 13), “The Expendables” and “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” watching Julia Roberts eat and laugh her way through Italy, India and Bali might be a more relaxing moviegoing experience than say, watching aging action stars blow up things. MTV News has been following this sweet and savory film from its beginnings (most closely, on our Hollywood Crush blog) via casting news, trailer premieres, Julia Roberts love, and more. Now that the film has arrived in theaters, we have a rundown of everything you need to know about “Eat Pray Love,” based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s bestselling memoir of the same name. Way back in October 2006, when Gilbert’s “travelogue of spiritual seeking” began to resonate book readers all over the world, to the tune of millions upon millions of dollars in book sales, Paramount acquired the rights to develop a film adaptation with Julia Roberts attached to star. That announcement was followed by news that “Glee” mastermind Ryan Murphy would direct. Later, casting news of Roberts’ key supporting male players came: Javier Bardem as the hunky possible paramour Felipe, Billy Crudup as unlucky first husband Stephen and James Franco as her post-divorce beau. With all of the boys in place, principal photography began in fall 2009. It was all quiet on the “Eat Pray Love” front until March of this year, when Paramount released the first official trailer , which was met with an enthusiastic response . The first trailer set up the basic premise of the story: Elizabeth (Roberts) leaves her husband (Crudup) and decides she needs to get away from the life she has created, rediscover herself after she almost falls into the same situation with another man (Franco). She decides to spend a year traveling to Italy, India and Bali, and as the title suggests, she learns to eat, pray and love again. A few months later, we learned that the film was staying as true as possible to the book’s exotic locales, thanks in large part to Roberts, who pushed for the production to shoot in the aforementioned countries. “Julia was really adamant about wanting to film in the locations because the book has become such a phenomenon over the years,” director Murphy told the Los Angeles Times. “There are actual ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ vacation tours people do to travel all over the world like Liz did,” Ryan said. On May 24, Roberts, along with author Gilbert and the “Men of ‘Eat Pray Love,’ ” visited “The Oprah Winfrey Show” to talk about finding inner peace, eating and more. In early July, about a month before the film’s release date, trailer number two (a slightly modified version of the first trailer) arrived and the film’s publicity campaign kicked into high gear. Roberts appeared on the cover of Entertainment Weekly ‘s August 2 issue, proudly revealing that she’d gained seven to 10 pounds during filming. Murphy invited his “Glee” kids to a secret screening from which the young actors tweeted giddy reactions. Jenna Ushkowitz wrote, “Secret screening of @EatPrayLove yesterday was AWESOME. Made me want to get on a plane to Italy for a big bowl of pasta.” Kevin McHale wrote, “Seeing Eat Pray Love was like eating the best cake ever. Still filled with it’s amazingness, & I want more!! So bloody inspiring. Go c it!” Mark Sallling loved another element of the movie: “The new eat pray love soundtrack is dope, check out the track better days by eddie vedder.” Before we knew, it was time for the film’s starry NYC premiere, where MTV News took the opportunity to ask the stars to weigh in on a hot topic: “eat, pray, love” or “gym, tan, laundry”? ‘Eat Pray Love’ ‘s Julia Roberts, Javier Bardem Debate: No Food, Faith Or Sex?

‘Why do I have to choose?’ Bardem pleads. ‘The movie is called ‘Eat Pray Love,’ the three of them together.’ By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Javier Bardem attends the L.A. premiere of “Eat Pray Love” Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images Life is all about choices, isn’t it? In “Eat Pray Love,” Julia Roberts decides to abandon her life as an unhappy working mother and embark on a globe-crossing trip to discover the keys to true personal and professional contentment. And on the “Eat Pray Love” red carpet on Tuesday evening in New York City, we forced Roberts and her castmates to make a series of tough choices — choices that may not have life-altering consequences but which most certainly demand attention … and generated a whole lot of giggles. First, we asked the stars which were the true words to live by: “eat, pray, love” or, as the “Jersey Shore” mantra goes, “gym, tan, laundry”? Then we got to the nitty-gritty: If these celebs had to give up one thing — eating, faith or sex — which would they part with? Not that all of the castmembers were pleased to be forced into making such a life-changing (albeit hypothetical) choice. “Why? Why? Why do I have to?” Roberts asked with a smile. “I can’t. No. No. But I don’t have to.” OK, OK. Director Ryan Murphy, conversely, decided he could cut breakfast, lunch and dinner from his daily routine. “I’m going to say I’m going to give up the eating and let love be my food,” he declared. Billy Crudup, meanwhile, seemed to misunderstand our fundamental question. “Did you say laundry?” he said with a groan. “Because I’ll give up laundry.” And then we came to Javier Bardem, who made quite the convincing argument for indulging in eating, faith and sex all at once. “Why do I have to choose?” he said “No, the movie is called ‘Eat Pray Love,’ the three of them together. Exactly, we all need all three. The movie and the book speaks about that. We need to feed ourselves with the three of them. And the pray thing, I’m not a believer or I’m not a practitioner. I don’t practice religion, so but we all have faith in something. So, we all need to pray and close our eyes when things go wrong, right?” Which would you give up if you had to choose? Massive Censorship Of Digg Uncovered « OOO

A group of influential conservative members of the behemoth social media site Digg.com have just been caught red-handed in a widespread campaign of censorship, having multiple accounts, upvote padding, and deliberately trying to ban progressives. An undercover investigation has exposed this effort, which has been in action for more than one year. “The more liberal stories that were buried the better chance conservative stories have to get to the front page. I’ll continue to bury their submissions until they change their ways and become conservatives.” -phoenixtx (aka vrayz) One bury brigade in particular is a conservative group that has become so organized and influential that they are able to bury over 90% of the articles by certain users and websites submitted within 1-3 hours, regardless of subject material. Literally thousands of stories have already been artificially removed from Digg due to this group. When a story is buried, it is removed from the upcoming section (where it is usually at for ~24 hours) and cannot reach the front page, so by doing this, this one group is removing the ability of the community as a whole to judge the merits or interest of these stories on their own (in essence: censoring content). This group is known as the Digg “Patriots”. DIGG PATRIOTS A group of nearly one hundred conservatives have banded together on a Yahoo Group called Digg Patriots (DP), and a companion site at coRanks to issue bury orders and discuss strategies to censor Digg and other social media websites. DP was founded on 21 May 2009. Since then, over 40,000 posts have been logged at a steady rate of around 3000-4000 per month. The “Patriots” Network on coRank is a tool to submit Diggs to a group list as opposed to sending an e-mail every time. It also has some tools that make submitting to the list as easy as clicking on a bookmark. The DP membership includes the following Digg users (among others): added by: toyotabedzrock

Olbermann: Sherrod was ‘Assassinated by Fox News and That Scum Breitbart’

Keith Olbermann interrupted his much-needed vacation Wednesday to surprise his few viewers with a “Special Comment” about the forced resignation of USDA official Shirley Sherrod. Quite predictably, his greater than twelve minute tirade largely focused on Fox News and Andrew Breitbart — the latter repeatedly referred to as “scum” as well as a “pornographer of propaganda” — who he claimed “assassinated” Sherrod. After starting his rant by pompously comparing the former USDA official to Alfred Dreyfus, the French artillery officer falsely accused of treason and sentenced to life imprisonment on Devil’s Island, the “Countdown” host tore into almost everyone on the planet (video follows with partial transcript and commentary):  KEITH OLBERMANN: No matter how much of a stretch it is to compare Shirley Sherrod to Alfred Dreyfus, mistake it not: Shirley Sherrod has been to her own Devil’s Island. And thanks to the perpetual fraud machine that is Fox News and the scum that is this assassin Breitbart, there will be a portion of this country – the mindless, the hateful, the reactionary, the racist – to whom she is forever convicted and ever imprisoned….A reputation assassinated by Fox News, assassinated by that scum Breitbart, assassinated by all their meager-brained imitators on other channels and other websites, their limp fellow travelers who never asked questions first but simply shot and shot and shot and shot and laughed. Let me make this utterly clear: what you see on Fox News, what you read on right-wing websites is the utter and complete perversion of journalism and it can have no place in a civilized society. It is words crashed together never to inform, only to inflame. It is a political guillotine. It is the manipulation of reality to make the racists seem benevolent, and to convict the benevolent as racists, even if her words must be edited, filleted, stripped of all context, rearranged, fabricated and falsified to do so. What you see on Fox News, what you read on right-wing websites is a manipulation, not just of a story, not just on behalf of a political philosophy, manipulation of a society. It’s intentional redirection from reality and progress to a paranoid delusion and the fomenting of hatred of Americans by Americans and nearly every last word of it is never in any tangible sense true. Ask Shirley Sherrod.   C’mon! Dreyfus spent four years of hell on Devil’s Island, and was exonerated eleven years after his conviction. Seems astonishingly extreme to compare what Sherrod has gone through in the past 48 hours to that. The way things are looking, the former USDA official will likely be able to leverage this incident into quite a personal fortune if she plays her cards right. Just imagine the book and movie offers that could be in her future.  But that wasn’t the only absurdity on display Wednesday evening as it really was the height of gall for Olbermann to point fingers at Breitbart for publishing an edited video at his website when two weeks ago the “Countdown” host cherry picked from a Rush Limbaugh radio transcript to make the conservative talk show host look racist. Talk about words being “edited, filleted, stripped of all context, rearranged, fabricated and falsified!” Now that REALLY is the pot calling the kettle black. On that same night, Olbermann also falsified history to mock Nevada senatorial candidate Sharron Angle AND got so many things wrong concerning oil subsidies and BP that PolitiFact almost gave him a “Pants on Fire” rating days later.  As such, Olbermann chastising anyone about journalistic ethics and integrity is like a porn star lecturing teenagers about the virtues of abstinence.   Moving back to Wednesday’s insanity, the “Countdown” host later scolded NAACP President Ben Jealous for not talking to the white farmer that Sherrod spoke of in her March 27 address to the civil rights organization. He did the same for Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack for not looking at the entire video in question. Yet, as he accused seemingly everyone of wrongdoing — which, by the way, included President Obama and MSNBC — Olbermann never once told viewers if HE had spoken to Sherrod, the farmer in question, or seen the entire video. What research had Olbermann done while on vacation to come to the conclusion that Sherrod was 100 percent innocent and all of her accusers — regardless of the ones that are now backpedaling — were 100 percent wrong? Wasn’t Olbermann doing exactly what he was scolding others for: offering an opinion without all the facts? Well, what should we expect of a man so desperately in need of a vacation after only two days off? With this in mind, as much as we’ll miss him, might we suggest he complete his R&R before offering any more “special comments?”  After all, as much as he needed a vacation, America required some time off from his psychotic rantings. Honestly, Keith, two days wasn’t enough. Go back to bed.

Jesse James Wins Custody Fight, May Move Closer to Sandra Bullock

Jesse James effectively trounced ex-wife Janine Lindemulder in their custody battle when a court ruled he may take their 6-year-old daughter Sunny to Texas. That’s where his other, more famous ex, Sandra Bullock, owns a home. Lindemulder, a former porn star who lives in California, wailed when the Orange County, Calif., judge announced the decision . “I’ll move! I’ll move!” she cried. “I can’t get attached and let her go!” Whether she actually will move is debatable, since she just got out of a halfway house and is likely unable to leave the state without the parole board’s okay. James and Lindemulder faced off in a week-long trial. The motorcycle mogul claims that a move to Austin would be for business purposes, although he was quoted in an online interview saying another reason is so his three children can maintain a close relationship with stepmom Bullock. The two were set to adopt baby Louis together, but following the shocking cheating scandal that ended their marriage, Sandra will now raise the boy alone. Lindemulder accuses James of moving to exclusively try to win back Bullock, who is close with the child, at the expense of her own relationship with Sunny. The judge said James and Lindemulder will have joint custody but James can take Sunny to Texas at the start of her new school calendar, in mid-August. Until then, Sunny will be with her mom, who James says is a threat to the child , or at least could be if her recurring addiction problems surface yet again.

Wissam Al Mana: Dating Janet Jackson!

It’s been a tough year for Janet Jackson, but she’s happier lately. New boyfriend Wissam Al Mana could be a big reason for that. After splitting from longtime boyfriend Jermaine Dupri after a seven-year relationship last summer, Jackson slowly eased into this new romance. The pop star and her man were snapped soaking up the rays in Sardinia, Italy. The 44-year-old Why Did I Get Married Too? star and the 35-year-old businessman from Qatar, who owns homes worldwide, have been quietly enjoying each other’s company, according to reports. Glad she’s moving on and happy! It’s nice to see Michael’s sister happy again. We’re guessing Wissam Al Mana approves of Janet’s new haircut too. In non-romance news, she’s currently writing True You, an exercise and nutrition book. She told Essence she “wanted to write this book because [she] wanted kids to have something to read and know that they are beautiful as they are.” A noble goal!

Book of Poetry, Cartoons Helps Explain Conservative Values

Craig Wieland never set out to write a book of poetry. “I’m a contractor,” he said with a chuckle. But what began as family dinner-table conversations to help his daughters understand social issues in America have culminated in a book of poems and cartoons about conservative ideas. Wieland, the owner of a nationwide construction contracting company, proved you don’t need a writer’s background or even a college degree to communicate your beliefs. Wieland said he catered to his daughters’ love for Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein by putting stories poetic form. “If you put it in a rhyme and use poetry, all of a sudden it becomes unique,” Wieland said in a telephone interview with the Culture and Media Institute about his new book, “Pointed Poems: Tools for Teaching Conservative Thinking.” In the book, Wieland combines poetry and cartoon-like illustrations to convey the differences between conservative and liberal viewpoints on both economic and social issues in America . The book’s 280 pages touch on everything from industry to patriotism to taxes and incorporate over 400 graphic illustrations by Dennis Preston to “give the poetry a little more punch.” “Pointed Poems,” which Wieland described as “unique,” and “fairly provocative,” discusses social issues, such as compassion, the role that personal responsibility plays in government and the problem of social programs that “help” parents raise their children. Wieland said his main message is only hinted at subtly in the book. Wieland hopes his poems show readers “the hypocritical stance that people have of criticizing the very things that they’re using.” For instance, in the poem, “Just Give Us the Outlet… and Nothing More,” protesters of electric generation prevent the construction of a new power plant but soon show their dissatisfaction in the following lines:             “So that’s what happened to our little city.              The planned power plant was not built… what a pity.              But people got mad when their outlets grew quiet.              And when it got hot, they started to riot.” By exposing this hypocrisy, Wieland further hopes to knock liberals off their assumed “moral high ground” on issues like green energy and limited government—topics which liberals use to push their agenda as the “correct” viewpoint. To help conservatives understand the differences between the conservative and liberal viewpoints on a variety of issues, each chapter begins with a brief explanation of the poem and issue, followed by the poem itself and illustrations. Wieland also highlights the “Teaching Tool” for each chapter, a single summary statement of the issue. Following the “Teaching Tool,” each poem starts with a cartoon of a father and son carrying a conversation about politics and American values. The father responds to the son’s questions by giving simple answers that reflect conservative thinking. This father-son exchange further strengthens its use as a tool for teaching conservative values to middle-of-the-road adults as well as the next generation of Americans—children and grandchildren.
