The Bossip 5: Killer Mike Breaks Down 5 Ways In Which Hip-Hop Has Made Black History

BOSSIP recently caught up with Mike Bigga (aka Killer Mike) , and while talking about his new album PL3DGE ( in stores April 19 ), we got into an interesting conversation about Black History and the Hip-Hop generation. Asked what the significance of Black History is today, here’s what Mike had to offer: Black History is important because Black people in America have no culture. Prior to Desegregation, we had culture. We had our own communities, we had our own businesses, we had our own system within which we took care of ourselves. With the dissemination of segregation, we gave up our culture in exchange for being fully integrated. Black communities are not policed by Black officers. The Black people who live in these communities don’t shop at Black stores because there are none, hence the Black dollar leaving the community and never coming back. And without that strong economic base, you don’t have a strong foundation for families, politics, commerce or culture, period. What Black people have lost is a sense of culture. A lot of people think having a Black president is enough. But we still have a [Congressional] Black Caucus, meaning we don’t have enough Black members of Senate or Congress for us not to need a caucus. We don’t have enough representation in local politics. Most of us are happy to have a Black President as a hood ornament, but most of the decisions he makes don’t affect you on a daily basis. So we still have a long way to go. But then, what is Hip-Hop’s roll in Black History? Flip through to check out five Black History facts every Hip-Hop head should know, courtesy of Mike Bigga.

SMH At Funkmaster Flex And His Wife

Turns out the random jawn Funkmaster Flex was accused of smacking up early Friday morning was none other than his wife. Yesterday though, after bringing the NYPD and the whole world into her marital drama, Monica Joseph-Taylor wants her privacy. “We’re doing okay,” Monica Joseph-Taylor said Saturday outside the couple’s upscale home in Westchester. Asked for details about the Friday-morning marital fracas, she grinned and teased a News reporter. “You’d have to buy me dinner,” said Joseph-Taylor, dressed in a black leather jacket, dark jeans, knee-high tan boots and a leather print scarf. Flex, whose real name is Aston Taylor, was arrested Friday after his wife told cops he pushed her down, smacked her phone out of her hand and then stomped on it. The fight erupted at about 5 a.m. inside the couple’s bedroom. It was sparked by threatening text messages Flex sent his wife Thursday night, Joseph-Taylor told cops. The 42-year-old deejay was arrested inside his 2011 Chevrolet Camaro near the couple’s Ardsley home. Flex was charged with three counts of criminal mischief and harassment, and released on $500 bail. He was ordered to keep away from Joseph-Taylor, an Emmy-nominated ex-producer of the “Live with Regis and Kathy Lee” show. Flex and Joseph-Taylor wed in 2000 and have a 9-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son. Saturday, Joseph-Taylor requested privacy before driving off in her silver BMW coupe. “I would love everyone to respect the privacy of my family – for me and my children,” said Joseph-Taylor. After she left, a bouquet of yellow roses and white lilies arrived at the couple’s home. Flex could not be reached for comment Saturday. At a gig in New Jersey Friday night, the New York native admitted getting into a tussle with his wife. “Yes, we had words,” Flex said. “Yes, there was an argument. Yes, there was a phone broken. Yes, there were police called. “I love my fans, and I encourage all of them to work things out in their own marriages.” Do you think there’s any going back once the police has been called and there’s a restraining order in the mix? Young Black USA Soccer Players “Agudelo & Bunbury” Come On And Save The Day Scoring Tying Goal… Then Bust Out The Dougie! [Video]

This kid Bunbury is no-joke and the new breed of soccer player in the U.S.A. Burnley (20) and his boy Agudelo (18) saved the day for the U.S. Saturday: On the play of Agudelo and Bunbury: There is no more inexact science than predicting the future performance of forwards, as anyone who hyped, say, Eddie Johnson can attest. That said, you can’t help but be cautiously optimistic about what the U.S. put on show after Sporting Kansas City striker Teal Bunbury, 20, and New York Red Bulls frontman Juan Agudelo, 18, came on for the mispositioned Chris Wondolowski and hapless Brek Shea. A game that had been slowly gliding into Chile’s favor, and not just on the scoreboard, turned. The two dropped off, darted, juked and combined their young hearts out, involving teammates who had been isolated and generating a dynamism the side hadn’t seen since, well, the last time the two had appeared for the U.S. together against South Africa in November. In the 75th minute, Agudelo wormed his way into the box and earned a penalty, which Bunbury converted and celebrated with a silly little dance. (*ALL SOCCER PLAYERS IN EUROPE CELEBRATE… THIS WRITER IS A DOUCHE AND PROBLEM IN AMERICAN SOCCER) Later, Agudelo’s sharp shot on goal could have been his second game winner in two games. But while the aforementioned feats were encouraging, it was Agudelo’s and Bunbury’s off-the-ball play and synergy with their teammates that could give rise to a bright future for the U.S. And this is rather good news, given that highly rated wingers Shea, 20, and Alejandro Bedoya, 23, still haven’t done anything to prove they belong. Shea covers a lot of ground and tracks back well, but his understanding of the game is so poor that he appears to lack even the faintest idea of how to use his considerable physical gifts. Bedoya, too, has enough skill for the job — although his left leg might as well be a wooden peg — but in seven caps, he has yet to turn in more than a nice run here and there. He’s either been incompatible for coach Bob Bradley’s system or lacked the temerity to demand the ball. But we shouldn’t let our stomachs churn over these players. They’re young; there’s time. The performances of Agudelo and Bunbury alone are sufficient to conclude that the next generation is at least on the right track.

New Jersey Bill Aims To Protect Children From Sexting Without Facing Criminal Charges

Man, technology is crazy. Used to be that you had to spend a dollar or two for some good ol’ fashioned porn. Now all you have to do is hit up Rhonda, the neighborhood floozy, and get your digital freak on…SMH. New Jersey teenagers caught texting or posting sexually explicit photos online could avoid prosecution under a measure that would give first-time offenders the chance to complete a diversionary program. State Assemblywoman Pam Lampitt of Camden, who is sponsoring the bill, said it’s important to teach teens the potential consequences of their actions without saddling them with a permanent criminal record. “We need to create a path that places education and forgiveness before arrest and prosecution,” said Lampitt, a Democrat. “Young people – especially teen girls – need to understand that sending inappropriate pictures is not only potentially illegal, but can leave an indelible mark on them socially and educationally.” The bill won unanimous support from both parties in a committee and is headed for the Assembly floor. A version must also pass the Senate for it to become law. The measure targets “sexting,” the practice of sending sexually explicit or suggestive photos by cell phone, as well as e-mailing similar images and posting them online. It’s a nationwide problem that has confounded parents, school administrators and law enforcers. Prosecutors in several states including Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Wisconsin have tried to stop it by charging teens who send and receive the pictures. Charges include possession and distribution of child pornography. Lawmakers in New Jersey agreed that criminal prosecutions are better avoided when possible. “There are certain aspects (of life) in which the criminal law should not be involved, and this is one of them,” said Assemblyman Michael Patrick Carroll, a Republican from Morristown. We not sure this is going to work. The bottom line is, kids with cell phones will “sext”. If you are concerned about your child then get them a phone without a camera, or take the phone away all together. But, hey if they like it, we love it. Source
