The new film touches on the taboo topics of abuse and scandal in the church that are too often swept under the rug. There was a time when abuse in the church was thought to be the exclusive province of the Catholic church, but in recent years mushrooming allegations of abuse have reared its ugly head in the black church as well, shaking once heavily populated congregations to their very foundations. With his new movie “Wolf,” filmmaker Ya’ke Smith wants to shine a light in the darkness of a taboo subject that has lurked (and thrived) in the shadows for years. “The title comes from the analogy ‘a wolf in sheep’s clothing,’” explained Smith. “The preacher is hiding in this God-like clothing, coming off as a spiritual person who is helping everyone, but he’s lurking through the congregation, looking for the weaklings. From his actions, he is also turning other boys into wolves, promoting that cycle of abuse.” In the wake of the Bishop Eddie Long scandal, where the once blemish-free, mega-church preacher found himself settling out of court with a group of teenage boys who accused him of luring them with extravagant gifts in exchange for physical favors, there are those who might say that “Wolf” is coming at an opportune time. The film has been making its rounds around the country via the film festival circuit. Though it has yet to secure distribution for screenings in movie theaters, it is still one of the most talked about independent films today. What do you think about exposing abuse in the church? Tey Tey’s rockin’ the cover of Vibe Vixen’s Premiere Fashion Issue… and we’ve got a preview of her interview before it hits newsstands. Teyana on what she’s learned from 2 Chainz: He’s the closest to my situation. Being signed to another great person before coming to Def Jam, the situation is not really working in your favor and now look. He’s showing me that everything is about timing, so don’t ever think that your time is not going to come. My season is coming up soon. Teyana on her relationship with the fellas from G.O.O.D. Music: All of them play all day, and I love that. With work ,everyone is down to business. It’s good that everyone has a serious side but also a sense of humor. It definitely makes work fun. That’s the good thing about working with the boys. They spoil you. I’m a spoiled brat [laughs]. Teyana on being a role model: I do think the way I dress and the way I brand myself–I’m very proud of myself that I can inspire young girls. If you have a body, embrace it. You ain’t always got to be sexy. Sometimes less is more. Like less make up is more. If I want to be in Jordans, a half top and shorts then that’s what I’m going to wear. Call me gay, call me what you want to…And now everybody is doing it. Teyana on proving herself to others: I feel like I’m at a point where I don’t have to do that anymore. Once I got older and matured more, it was still a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” situation. When I was dressed in my streetwear, I was gay. Then, I do one shoot, show some skin and now I’m not a virgin. I can’t win for losing . Source Images via Vibe/Twitter
Russell Crowe had to be bailed out by the U.S. Coast Guard over the weekend after a kayaking trip went wrong off the coast of New York’s Long Island. The star, who is in the area filming Darren Aronofsky’s Noah , launched from Cold Spring Harbor Saturday afternoon, but got lost at sea as it grew dark. Crowe and a friend managed to make their way to shore, beaching their kayaks in Huntington Bay, nearly 10 miles east from where they had set out. The coast guard was patrolling the area and heard the 48-year-old calling out around 10 p.m. Crowe and his friend were brought to Huntington Harbor. “It wasn’t really a rescue,” a Coast Guard spokesman said. “Really, more of just giving someone a lift.” The men were wearing life vests and uninjured. Crowe Tweeted at 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning, “Thanks to Seth and the boys from the US Coast Guard for guiding the way… 4 hrs 30 mins, 7m (11.2km).” And he later expounded, writing, “We knew where exactly where we were, paddling around from csh into wind, we ran out of day. Grand adventure eh.” [Photo: WENN.com]

Sibling rivalry in pre-war Central California, the American dream, and… dick jokes ? John Steinbeck’s dusty, angsty 1952 opus East of Eden is a staple tome known to every Lit major on earth, but the tale of two brothers caught up in family dramarama hasn’t been told quite like it is in Victor Quinaz’s new short film (exec produced by Zachary Quinto ), premiering today at the Hollyshorts Film Fest. Buoyed by the surprisingly swaggerific comic timing of Gossip Girl ‘s Penn Badgley as the mercurial bean-farming bro Caleb Trask, this is East of Eden like you’ve never seen it before. Quinaz’s East of Eden , part of the web series Periods (created by Quinaz and Anna Martemucci), breathes LOLs into Steinbeck’s heavy 20th century saga with a wink, giving Badgley a fantastic forum to flex his comic chops. Also pretty hilarious: Philip Quinaz as the gentle Aron Trask and Brian Shoaf as pop Adam, the ultimate disapproving dad. (That’s Martemucci as the boys’ whore mother and Periods regular Alison Fyhrie as Abra.) Watch the exclusive online debut below: The short premieres today at Grauman’s Chinese in Los Angeles on opening night of the annual HollyShorts Film Festival , which screens over 300 short-form films between today’s kick-off and next Thursday (August 9-16). East of Eden is just one of a collection of Periods shorts premiering at the fest, including the Quinto-starrer Before After . (Quinto executive produces the series via his Before the Door Pictures banner.) If you like what you see here, there’s more good news: Details on PERIODS. Films’ first feature film are set to be unveiled at tonight’s screening debut. Get info on the HollyShorts lineup here , and check out the Periods. website for more from Quinto, Quinaz and Co. You need only utter the words “Rocky loves Em-ily” or “Light up the eyes!” to transport me to the wondrous time known as the early ’90s, when timeless classics — timeless, I say ! — such as Touchstone’s tale of Rocky, Colt, and Tum Tum opened up new worlds for 11-year-old me . Hollywood.com’s Michael Arbeiter knows what I’m talking about: “[As] rich and dense as the history of the ninja might be, it wasn’t until the date of August 7, 1992, exactly twenty years ago today, that the identity of the Japanese spy and soldier really hit its potential in terms of relevance in the canon of American film. For on this date, the great Jon Turtletaub bequeathed unto the world his third directorial feature: 3 Ninjas .” Preach . Thanks to Arbeiter for bringing this ’90s kid-cinema essential back into the conversation with his open letter ( 3 Ninjas: 20 Years Later ? Sign me up!), which today rekindled my decades-long love affair with the 1992 ninja pic. Oh, who am I kidding? That flame never went out. A few years back I committed my 3 Ninjas love to the internet in an ode to star Michael Treanor, archived at the old Cinematical , but my passion for the erstwhile Rocky endures: Treanor, 13-years-old when 3 Ninjas debuted, played Rocky with a fresh-scrubbed, clear-eyed honesty and one heckuva smile. It helped that cinematographer Richard Michelak shot his preteen actors in the dreamiest light possible (he also lensed White Wolves: A Cry in the Wild II , AKA White Wolves: The One With Mark-Paul Gosselaar ). And that Rocky protected his little brothers and never gave up, even when all seemed lost. When Colt wanted to karate chop the mean kids at school, who was the voice of reason who calmed him down? Rocky. When idiot surfer-kidnappers invaded the boys’ house, who came up with the plan to take them down, Home Alone -style? Rocky did. Most of all, I loved Treanor because he rocked a dreamy, short on the sides/long in the front early ’90s hairdo that stayed perfectly coiffed even when Rocky ninja-jumped ten feet into the air to dunk on a pair of bullies in a basketball game to win his girlfriend’s bicycle back! Which brings me to the bane of my eleven-year-old existence: Rocky’s girlfriend, Emily. Ugh, Emily. The worst. It took a good few decades for me to get over my Emily-hate; it helped that by High Noon at Mega-Mountain , Rocky had wisened up and gotten himself a girlfriend named Jennifer, even if by that fourquel I’d already moved on to Team Colt. But I digress! Happy 20th, 3 Ninjas . Hollywood never quite made ’em like they made you. (Except for all those sequels. And those other ’90s kid flicks I wore out on VHS.) So good. So ’90s. The best thing Turteltaub ever made, and yes, that includes Cool Runnings . Never forget. [ Hollywood.com ]
The bus driver is acquitted for ignoring this as well… White Teen Bullies Torture 10-Yr Old Black Boy On Bus his video shows the shocking torment suffered by a 10-year-old boy on his way to school. For 40 minutes Cequan Haskins was abused by a pair of 15-year-old bullies in May 2011. They called him names, made sexual and racial slurs and held a scorching cigarette lighter to his skin. In the chilling footage Cequan can be heard screaming and pleading with the bullies to stop but they are relentless, clambering over seats to get at him. They are visibly much larger than their victim and he is unable to get away from them as they yell at him to ‘sit down and shut your mouth’. Cequan’s mother, Roxanne Haskins, released the video at a press conference on Friday, telling wset-tv that she wanted people to know just how bad bullying can be. ‘I wanted parents to be aware, that when I speak out, I’m speaking out for all kids. But unfortunately, this did happen to my child, and I want parents to be aware of what’s going on in the school system,’ she said. ‘My son, he was a special needs child and he didn’t deserve this. He was entitled to a safe transportation just like any other child in the Appomattox County Public School System.’ Cequan was left with physical and emotional scars in the aftermath of his ordeal, Ms Haskins said. He continues to suffer from post traumatic stress disorder and has undergone hours of therapy. Both of the teens involved were found guilty of disorderly conduct, assault and battery. Ms Haskins has launched a civil case against the Appomattox County School Board and is awaiting a trial date. The bus driver, Nancy Davis was initially investigated for child neglect, the video playing a key part in her trial. She can be heard shouting ‘Ugh, anything to get him quiet! I’ve got to drive this bus’ as the boys torture Haskins toward the back of the bus. She was acquitted of all child abuse charges several months ago. youtube
