DVD: Gamera is Bradley Cooper is Jayne Mansfield — In Praise of the Also-Ran

Shout! Factory finished off its series of DVD debuts for original Japanese Gamera movies this week with the release of Gamera vs. Zigra and Gamera: The Super Monster , and it’s a long-overdue recognition of these entertaining Japanese giant monster (or kaiju) flicks. You’ve gotta feel for the fire-breathing, flying giant turtle — no matter what he accomplished on the big screen, he spent his entire career in the shadow of the more popular Godzilla. Ahead, four other Hollywood also-rans who quietly toil in the shadows.

The Hangover 2 Trailer: The Wolfpack is Back!

The Wolfpack, folks, is on its way back. On May 26, The Hangover 2 hits theaters around the country. Featuring original stars Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper, Justin Bartha, and Ed Helms, the sequel will find these well-meaning morons in Thailand for Stu’s wedding. As you might expect, things don’t go so smoothly during the pre-ceremony brunch. While the following trailer doesn’t reveal much about the follow-up, we dare you not to crack up at the sight of Galifianakis’ Alan… The Hangover 2 Trailer

‘Hangover Part II’ Trailer: The Five Coolest Moments

From the monkey on Bradley Cooper’s back to Ed Helms’ tribal face tattoo, we can’t wait to hit this destination wedding. By Eric Ditzian Ed Helms, Bradley Cooper and Zack Galifianakis in “The Hangover Part II” Photo: Warner Bros. Todd Phillips promised and he delivered. Last week, the writer/director — who these days can’t seem to make an R-rated comedy that doesn’t do mega-business across the globe — assured MTV News that the teaser trailer for “Hangover Part II” would be popping up online this week. And pop up it has. True to Phillips’ words the footage is “truly a teaser,” with almost no dialogue and little hint about the events surrounding what clearly turns an innocent destination wedding in Thailand into a life-altering disaster. We do, however, contest Phillips’ speculation that the teaser “might end up frustrating more than solving questions.” While questions are hardly solved, we couldn’t be more pumped finally to feast our eyes on official footage from the Memorial Day weekend release. Here are our picks for the five coolest moments: Hotel or Prison? In “The Hangover,” Bradley Cooper and his pals find their way into one of the chicest suites in Las Vegas. Their digs in Thailand, alas, look more like the confines of a prison — less “King and I” than “Brokedown Palace.” There’s no way that this was their original resort locale. It’s anybody’s guess how and why the end up in this dump. Say Goodbye to That Security Deposit This image is a direct homage to the post-party scene in “Hangover”: After swilling what turned out to be roofie-infused booze, the friends awoke in their trashed Vegas suite, each one nursing a nuclear headache as a tiger roamed freely in the bathroom. This time around, the morning after takes place in a decidedly less glamorous environment and the big cat is replaced by an oversize cockroach. The Wolf Pack is Back In the original film, Zach Galifianakis proudly — and nonsensically — welcomed the crew into his wolf pack. Disaster ensued. This shot shows the gang back together again. Missing, interestingly, is Justin Bartha, who went missing in the first flick and whose absence in the new trailer seems to lend credence to the rumor that he’ll once again disappear in “Part II.” Is This Kind of Nice? The trailer’s first piece of dialogue belongs to Galifianakis and it’s, predictably, hilariously detached from what is clearly a seriously bad situation. Why else is a monkey wrapped around Cooper’s neck? Why does Galifianakis look like a blind man shaved his noggin? And about Ed Helms’ face … Mike Tyson, Trendsetter Iron Mike’s cameo in “Hangover” was one of the comedy’s finest pleasures. And as we’ve seen from “Part II” photos, Helms somehow finds himself branded with Tyson’s most infamous identifier: a tribal face tattoo. For a guy about to get married, that’s just not a good look. As he says before hanging his head, “Oh god!” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Return of the ‘Pack: The Teaser Trailer for The Hangover Part II Debuts with Help from Jay-Z

When the trailer for Bruno debuted in 2009 , Universal tried to sell audiences on the critical love for Sacha Baron Cohen’s previous summer comedy, Borat . It didn’t work. Cut to 2011, and here comes Warner Bros. using a similar strategy in the first teaser for The Hangover Part II (it looks like those Roman numerals are part of the official title), which uses quotes about the first film to fill up much of the trailer’s length. Is this highly anticipated sequel doomed to face a Bruno -like box office fate?

‘Hangover Part II’ Trailer Drops Next Week, Todd Phillips Says

‘It’s truly a teaser, so it might end up frustrating more than solving questions,’ director tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms in “The Hangover” Photo: Warner Bros. After the record-breaking success of “The Hangover” and the endless speculation about where the sequel would take place, after the casting gossip and the Mel Gibson controversy , after the first photos and the behind-the-scenes set visit, we’re about to get our first peek at actual footage from “The Hangover Part II.” “We have a teaser trailer that I just finished color for yesterday night, so that’ll come out next week,” Todd Phillips told MTV News on Friday (February 18) while promoting the DVD release of “Due Date.” “And I think it comes out in theaters on ‘Hall Pass,’ which should be next Friday.” It can’t come soon enough. The film hits theaters May 26, and up until now, official glimpses at the production have been few and far between. The only reason for the dearth of Warner Bros.-sanctioned material, though, is that Phillips and friends didn’t wrap production on the flick that long ago. “We’ve had, like, one photo out, and that’s just because we finished shooting on New Year’s Day, and the movie comes out on Memorial Day,” the writer/director said. “It’s really just a crazy-tight schedule.” While Phillips wouldn’t dish details about what we’ll actually see in the teaser, he did emphasize that fans should temper their expectations: The footage will hardly offer a comprehensive dive into what the film is all about. “It’s truly a teaser, so it might end up frustrating more than solving questions,” he told us. “I love it. It’s a true tease, if that makes sense. It’s just one of those things that’s gonna make you go, ‘OK, let’s see what more they have.’ It’s to pique interest and to remind people what’s coming down the pike.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Critics’ Choice Awards Love The Social Network And Natalie Portman As Much As Everyone Else Did

Last night the Broadcast Film Critics Association doled out their yearly accolades for the best acheivements in film, with many of the usual suspects getting the gold. The Social Network won best picture, Natalie Portman best actress, Colin Firth best actor, and so on (although Inception cleaned up fairly well in the technical categories. Might this be a portent for bigger things?). At this rate, the Golden Globes might be a bit of snoozefest. The full list of winners after the jump.

Alien Prequel Is No Longer An Alien Prequel, Proving That Prequels Are Usually Terrible

In the Small Mercies department, Ridley Scott recently revealed to soul sister site Deadline that his much talked-about Alien prequel movie has gone through a metamorphosis. Specifically, it’s no longer a prequel tied to the Alien mythology, it’s just a standalone movie now. And for that, I am quite thankful.
