Cooper On De Niro In ‘Silver Linings Playbook’: Calling Him Dad Came ‘From A Real Place’

Bradley Cooper  says it wasn’t a stretch to call Robert De Niro “Dad” in Silver Linings Playbook . The Hangover actor plays Pat Solitano, the bipolar son of De Niro’s extremely OCD Pat Solitano, Sr. in the film, and at the New York premiere party ,  Cooper told us that his prior working relationship with De Niro on Limitless , which blossomed into a friendship, made it easy to channel that familial bond with the Taxi Driver actor.  At a press conference for the movie earlier that day,  Cooper, who lost his actual father in 2011,  told the gathered media that he had trepidations about playing the role of a Philadelphia area man struggling with bipolar disorder. “He really did champion me” to get the part, Cooper said of De Niro, adding that he decided to take the role, in part, because, “I knew that I could say ‘Dad’ and look at him and it would come from a real place.” During the party at the Royalton hotel in midtown Manhattan, I asked Cooper to elaborate upon that comment, and he replied that because of his work with De Niro on their last movie,  “We sort of became great friends,” adding: “I love him.”  That relationship, he explained, became “a real bonus” when it came to the onscreen dynamic of the two actors in Silver Linings Playbook .  With any movie role, Cooper explained, “You need certain anchors, and when I would say say the word ‘Dad’ to him, it just felt very deep and grounded.” In the David O. Russell -directed movie, De Niro gives his most authentic performance as a father since he directed himself in the 1993 picture A Bronx Tale .  He even weeps in the movie — an unscripted moment that was caught on the last take of a highly charged scene shot in the attic of the Solitano family home.  Russell, who, during the press conference, repeatedly referred to the veteran actor as “Mr. De Niro,” said the emotional moment caught him completely off-guard. “I was behind him in the attic going, ‘What’s happening?'” the director recalled. Russell’s son, Matthew, who plays a nosy teen-aged neighbor with a video camera, struggled with a different emotion while shooting a confrontational scene with De Niro: nervous laughter. The director recalled at the press conference that his son said to him that acting opposite De Niro ” was like waking up in Raging Bull . ”  Russell said that he chided his son for the inappropriate outburst, telling him,  “You’ve got to stop laughing.”  But De Niro, he added, figured out a way to work with Matthew’s anxious laughter to ratchet up tension in the scene. POLL: Holy Latex Rash! Does The New Robocop Exo-Skeleton Look Too Much Like The Batsuit?

Well, I don’t see any latex nipple protrusions, but our sister site Deadline makes an interesting point .  After posting an exclusive ComingSoon.net shot of Joel Kinnaman in the new black RoboCop suit for Jose Padilha’s remake,  Deadline noted that “The outfit does kinda have a Tim Burton’s Batman feel to it — a far cry from Peter Weller’s metallic get-up in the original.   So, we’d like to put the question to you.  Does the RoboCop 2.0 suit remind you too much of a certain Caped Crusader’s black get-up?  Take the poll after the jump. RoboCop hits theaters on Aug. 9, 2013. So, the good news is, even if you don’t like it, you have time to get used to it.  Oh yes, and one clarifying point about the nipples: as our commenter “Horrified” points out, those design details weren’t added until Joel Schumacher took the reins from Burton to direct  Batman Forever and Batman & Robin .) Padilha’s update also stars Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley and Jennifer Ehle, Josh Zetumer and Nick Schenk wrote the re-boot script. Set in 2028, Kinnaman plays a Detroit cop seriously messed up in the line of duty. After the multinational, morally bankrupt Omnicorp saves his life and gives him super-human abilities — see suit, above — the newly christened RoboCop opens a can of whoop-ass on Detroit’s criminal element, and, if the new story follows the old, his very creators. Finally , the Scary Movie franchise is living up to its waning reputation as the classiest WTF-iest of the lowest common denominator spoof-offs, as The New York Post reveals : “‘ Charlie [Sheen] and Lindsay [Lohan] filmed a love scene,’ said a spy. ‘The scene they were shooting for the movie was of them in bed together’… We hear the Scary script called for Lohan to kiss Sheen, and also to slip into a kinky collar.” Making out with Charlie Sheen! A Tale of Two James Bond Posters (For Skyfall)

Two very different posters emerged for November’s release of the 23rd James Bond installment, Skyfall . In one, current Bond incarnation Daniel Craig looks the upright perfectly dressed 007. Sure he has a gun, but he holds it more like a martini as he stands in perfect posture with the Union Jack and what appears to be the City of London in the background. The second one ditches the British flag for a more casual James Bond hitting the dirt in action (with blazer), with a side view of Craig pointing his pistol at an unseen assailant with large 007 emblazoned in the background. The two posters clearly meant to appeal to Bond fans on either side of the pond as clearly marked by their release dates. Upright Bond looking spiffy with tux and bow-tie (and British flag) of course will appeal to British fans as clearly marked by the October 26th release date. Rough and tumble shoot-em-up Yanks meanwhile, see James Bond in action, ready to shoot his nemesis as he risks tears and dirt as he hits the ground (but his hair still looks quite in place). EW surmised (http://insidemovies.ew.com/2012/09/17/dueling-skyfall-posters-james-bond/ ) that the British Bond poster played into U.K. stereotypes, which of course translates into something more formal. And of course the American version is meant to appeal to their comparatively more trigger-happy cousins in the former colonies. In the latest installment, Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. Sam Mendes is directing the film, which also stars Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, Helen McCrory, Ben Whishaw and Judi Dench. Compare/contrast the two posters and give your two cents. Which one do you like better?

Love, Marilyn, Argo & Not Fade Away Set For Hamptons Film Festival

Liz Garbus’ documentary Love, Marilyn will have its U.S. premiere at the 20th edition of the Hamptons International Film Festival in the tony Long Island, NY town of East Hampton, while David O. Russell ‘s Silver Linings Playbook will open HIFF in neighboring Southampton the following day. Both films debuted recently at the Toronto International Film Festival , with Playbook picking up the Audience Prize over the weekend. Fellow TIFF title Argo by Ben Affleck will screen as the five-day festival’s Centerpiece, while Paramount Vantage’s Not Fade Away will close out the event. Garbus’ Love, Marilyn will bow at HIFF October 4th, featuring an intimate and revealing portrait of the legendary Hollywood actress. HBO will air the film next year. The Weinstein Company’s Silver Linings Playbook centers on Pat Solitano (Bradley Cooper) who after a court-ordered stay at a psychiatric facility, moves back in with his parents (Robert De Niro and Jackie Weaver) and tries to win back his estranged wife, Nikki. And into the mix comes Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence) who is also volatile, but offers to help win Nikki back, but there’s a price. Ben Affleck’s Argo directs and plays Tony Mendez, a CIA agent who comes up with a daring plan to rescue six Americans hiding in the Canadian embassy in Tehran during the 1979 hostage crisis. Warner Bros. will release the film October 12th. The Sopranos creator David Chase makes his feature film directorial debut with Paramount Vantage’s Not Fade Away , closing HIFF on October 7th. Starring Sopranos star James Gandolfini, the film is set in the ’60s when the Rolling Stones appear on television and three best friends from the New Jersey suburbs decide to form a rock band. “These films, with their range and risk-taking creative choices, represent the pinnacle of what the festival has endeavored to achieve for the last 20 years,” said HIFF Director of Programming David Nugent in a statement. “The Oscar and Emmy recognition that each of these four filmmakers have already received is a testament to their vital creative force. I can’t wait to share their distinct visions with our audiences in the Hamptons.”

WATCH: Trailer For The Master Declares ‘Man Is Not An Animal’ (The Elephant Man Would Agree)

I’m glad Philip Seymour Hoffman is in voiceover — and not in his underwear — when he declares “Man is not an animal” at the beginning of the final theatrical trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson ‘s highly anticipated film, The Master .  Otherwise, the line — which is accompanied by a scene of Phoenix rhythmically pounding his fists on a table — would recall a little too closely the scene from David Lynch’s classic 1980 film The Elephant Man  in which the tormented titled character, played by John Hurt, wails “I am not an animal…I am a human being!”  (Actually, I’m conflating here. Hurt isn’t in his underwear in that scene, but Bradley Cooper did play the character, as directed, in his skivvies in Williamstown, Mass. just a few weeks back.) Phoenix, who acts out with his fists more than once in the trailer — and with a pistol —  plays a Navy veteran who falls in with the charismatic leader of The Cause (Hoffman), a quasi-religious movement with parallels to Scientology. In one scene, a character portentously declares: “Good science allows for more than one opinion. Otherwise you really have the will of one man, which is the basis for a cult.” That’s followed by a voiceover of Amy Adams, who plays Dodd’s wife, saying: “The only way to defend ourselves is to attack,” a line that could be interpreted as a reference to Scientology’s  reputation for fighting back aggressively, particularly in the media, when its organization comes under scrutiny.  Here’s the trailer.   The Master opens on Sept. 21.
