Dax Shepard Compensates For Crappy Hit And Run Box Office By Dissing Age Of The Expendables 2 Cast

Speaking of old…. Dax Shepard deployed one of the oldest marketing tricks in the book on the Conan show on Monday when he diverted attention from the lame box-office performance of his movie Hit and Run by poking fun at the aging action stars who kicked his cinematic ass, the cast of  The Expendables 2 . Shepard told host Conan O’Brien that the cast of the Sylvester Stallone-directed The Expendables 2 were “all show and no go” when it came to their collective well-muscled appearance.   “It looks like the zombie apocalypse is saving the earth,” Shepard said in reference to the veteran ensemble. Alas, Hit and Run might have benefited from scenes of a zombie apocalypse, or something that would have raised moviegoer interest. The picture, which also starred Bradley Cooper and Shepard’s real-life girlfriend Kristen Bell grossed just $5.9 million in its initial five-day opening. The movie ranked 10th for the weekend, well behind The Expendables 2 , which saw a $13.5 million weekend and a 15-day domestic box-office take of $52.3 million. Feeling a little insecure there, Dax? Poor Thang! Zoe Saldana Is Being Played Shady By Her Vanilla Swirl Co-Star Ex-Boo Bradley Cooper

It’s a cold world. Zoe Saldana ain’t gettin’ NO LOVE from former boo thang Bradley Cooper and the pair is supposed to be promoting their new film “The Words” together! Is Bradley Cooper giving ex-girlfriend Zoe Saldana the silent treatment? At a screening of “The Words” at Goose Creek in the Hamptons, People magazine’s 2011 “Sexiest Man Alive” told Confidenti@l he hasn’t been speaking to his co-star, who he was romantically linked on and off with from January until June. “I only talk to Brian [Klugman, the director and childhood pal],” Cooper told us when pressed. “That’s the only person I ever talk to.” The sexy Saldana was noticeably absent from the screening of the plagiarism thriller, which also stars Jeremy Irons, Ben Barnes and Dennis Quaid. In it, she plays Cooper’s lover. “She brought so much to the role, as did everybody else. Jeremy Irons was a dream. I had a chance to work with great people,” Cooper said. Spotted at the Fiji Water and Carrera Sunglasses-sponsored screening were Susan Sarandon, Howard Stern and his wife, Beth Ostrosky. Also noticeably absent was co-star Olivia Wilde, who was linked to the blue-eyed Lothario in March 2011 after he split from then-longtime girlfriend Renee Zellweger. A spokeswoman for Saldana says the “Avatar” actress “wasn’t able to travel to New York because she had a conflict. She will be at the premiere in L.A. and is doing press from there, too.” The rep didn’t elaborate on the “conflict,” but Saldana was spotted in Los Angeles with a cast around her wrist on Friday. The former couple, who made their debut at a New Year’s Eve bash together, seemed quite friendly after calling it quits in March. They had dinner at East Village Mexican restaurant Empellon Cocina at the end of May, and we reported them locking lips while brunching with Saldana’s family at Boom in SoHo in June. SMH. He shouldn’t have even said that much to the press about who he talks to! Hopefully Zoe will find her some new swirl soon and forget about this guy. Source GSI Media Continue reading

REVIEW: Hit and Run Stalls Because Dax Shepard Is Mostly In Love With His Cars

There’s a lot of “auto” in Dax Shepard ‘s debut as an auteur. Shepard (who previously co-directed the mockumentary Brother’s Justice ) wrote, co-directed and stars in the action comedy  Hit and Run ; he even cast real-life love Kristen Bell to play the role of his cherished girlfriend, but their romance is not at the center of this movie — rather, it’s the deep love between Shepard and the many cars that populate the film that drives Hit and Run . It’s only when these machines rev their engines that the soundtrack fills with sultry ballads and the camera switches to slow mo — all the better for us to admire the sleek undercarriages and sexy lines of the movie’s many four-wheeled stars. But this is far from a good thing. The movie’s human stars can’t compete with such auto-erotica; cartoonish characters and a thin plot are mostly vehicles to get from one stretch of highway to another, in a chase through the kind of cinematic America where fleabag motels have parking lots filled with easily-stolen luxury sports cars and roadways are always adjacent to abandoned airports that provide plenty of space for nifty driving tricks. Shepard stars as Charlie Bronson, a likeable guy living in a non-specific American everytown. Although Charlie doesn’t have a job, he does have a devoted girlfriend, Annie (Bell), and a bumbling U.S. Marshal (Tom Arnold, looking increasingly like a nerdy version of Meat Loaf) to watch over him. Charlie, you see, is in the Witness Protection Program, a fact that is supposed to prevent him from leaving his safe provincial town. But when Annie has the opportunity to interview for a big job at a university in Los Angeles, Charlie decides to chauffer her towards her dreams and away from his own safety. The fact that he decides to do this not in Annie’s inconspicuous sedan but rather in his highly noticeable 1967 Lincoln Continental (complete with expired plates registered to his former identity) is only one of many questionable moments in the thin plot. It’s the plates on the car that allow Gil (Michael Rosenbaum) Annie’s meticulously groomed and spiteful ex-boyfriend, to uncover Charlie’s former identity. And thanks to the wonders of Facebook, where one assumes all dangerous criminals have easily-searchable profiles, Gil is able to track down Charlie’s former bank-robbing associates and tip them off as to his whereabouts. The chase is on, with Annie and Charlie trailed by Marshal Randy and Gil, picking up extra characters (including a pair of extraneous cops and Beau Bridges in a cameo as Charlie’s father, who keeps a fleet of monster ATVs in his big red barn, of course) along the way. Will the baddies from Charlie’s former life catch up with him? Will Annie make it to her interview? Will she discover that Charlie’s story, of only being an innocent witness to a crime, isn’t the whole truth? Will they stay together in the face of shock revelations and inevitable car sickness? ( Will that ATV get to climb a giant staircase?? ) The movie kicks up no real tension in the search for the answers to any of these questions, and when plotlines do swing back around, they come with more of an “Oh right, remember that ?” than with a satisfying snap. One senses that the movie doesn’t quite have the chutzpah to be what it wants to be — a Fast and Furious -like sequence of balletic car chases — so it periodically halts to wedge in some romance. (The charming Bell and Shepard don’t have much to do but enjoy a lovely on-screen chemistry, a rarity for offscreen couples, that rises above their underwritten characters.) Jokes stay mostly in the range of the strictly puerile (naked old people!) with occasional forays into the mystifyingly icky (an extended joke has Charlie obsessed with the nationality of the man who raped Bradley Cooper’s bank-robbing baddie in the prison shower.) The talented cast is game and deserves better, especially Cooper, who is saddled with a dreadlocked fright wig that gives the impression he is performing all his scenes with a spongy blond octopus sitting on his head. But at least he gets to drive, swerving around in his little red car like he’s in a bumper car ring. From this we know his character is unpredictable but ultimately in control, because the movie’s most complete character developments come through the cars the characters drive. It’s a cinematic stand-in for masculinity that would make Freud proud: We know Arnold’s U.S. Marshal is a mess because he drives a minivan that he can’t even park competently (he also wildly fires off his gun all the time, in case one mishandled phallic symbol wasn’t enough). Dax Shepard’s Charlie, as befits the hero and the part played by the writer/director, gets the broadest spectrum of vehicles, from the kickass black Lincoln to a shiny ATV. It looks like he’s having a great time up there, getting to drive them around. If only he had brought the audience along for the ride. Anika Chapin is an NYC-based dramaturg and writer. Some On Screen Swirl? Bradley Cooper To Get It Poppin On Camera With Bey Bey In ‘A Star Is Born’ Remake

Bradley Cooper Wanted For Male Lead In ‘A Star Is Born’ Remake ‘Hangover’ front man Bradley Cooper is the latest Hollyweird hunk of hotness in consideration to star opposite mommy banger Bey Bey in the Clint Eastwood remake of ‘A Star Is Born.” Bradley Cooper is reportedly mulling over an offer to star opposite Beyonce in Clint Eastwood’s film “A Star is Born.” Eastwood allegedly wants Cooper as the leading man for the movie, according to Variety. The director’s version of “A Star is Born” will be a remake of the 1937 film. The movie is about an aging rocker who falls in love with a young, rising star. Screenwriter Will Fetters based the aging rocker character on Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain, imagining how he would last in the industry 20 years later had he survived. The Press Association reports Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale and Will Smith have all turned down the “Star Is Born” role. Tom Cruise was the latest to be linked to the part. “The Hangover” actor may be contemplating the role in Eastwood’s Warner Bros. remake, but according to Variety, “there is no deal in place and Cooper has a very busy schedule.” Hmmmm. Sounds like quite a few Hollyweird heavyweights have turned down this male lead offer. Wonder what that’s about? We’re thinking they’ll have better luck with Bradley since he’s certainly known to get his off-screen swirl on ! Source

Isabella Brewster: Dating Russell Brand!

You might wanna turn away, Katy Perry… Multiple sources confirm that the blue-haired singer’s ex-husband has started up a relationship with Isabella Brewster, as the sister of actress Jordana was spotted strolling through West Hollywood with Russell Brand over the weekend. “It’s been going on for a few weeks,” an insider tells Us Weekly of Brand and Brewster , who has also dated Bradley Cooper and Milo Ventimiglia. “He really likes her.” The actor/comedian recently split from Perry after 14 months of marriage, with the singer admitting it was difficult for the pair to maintain their initial romance. She’s been linked to musician Robert Ackroyd of Florence + the Machine, but it appears as if Brand’s fling with Brewster may be a bit more serious. “She’s cute,” added the tabloid source. “She is all over him and Russell loves it.”

Silver Linings Playbook Trailer: Young Loonies In Love

Crazy people, they’re just like us! Sure, we may not hurl copies of A Farewell To Arms through closed windows or live with our parents at age 37 (if the Wikipedia entry on Bradley Cooper is to be believed) but as far as the trials and triumphs of burgeoning love are concerned, David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook looks like a standard rom com on prescription meds. One would think that Russell would cash in his chips after the Awards-scooping The Fighter and serve up something that defies category like I Heart Huckabees or his uncompleted feature Nailed , but my guess is since Russell has seen the interior of director’s jail he has no intention of going back. Silver Linings Playbook , despite the mouthful of a title, looks like a strong, albeit conventional flick. Count me as one of many eager to see Jennifer Lawrence play an adult (and, no, I don’t mean “adult” in any euphemistic way.) Plus this looks like an appropriate use of Bradley Cooper’s bordering-on-manic charm. The November 21 release of SLP couldn’t be better timed, as it will wipe his slate clean after September’s soporific Sundance dud The Words . From these few clips here it seems like the relationships sparkle, and even the paycheck-happy Robert De Niro looks like he’s going to bring some spin to the potentially sitcom-ish weary Dad. The other big surprise in the trailer is the appearance of a guy who may look familiar to you. You may need to hit pause. Is that…? Yes, it is! It’s Chris Tucker. You know, that comic actor who seemed like a rising star in the 1990s until he decided that prepping for the next Rush Hour movie took LOTS AND LOTS of research. Watching nut-cases fall in love has long been a pleasure ( David and Lisa , As Good As It Gets , my cousin and that kleptomaniac she married) so Silver Linings Playbook seems ready to scratch that itch. Plus, it doesn’t look too preachy. The family scenes, mere flashes in this trailer, tease some of that “gotta love ’em” positivity that made The Fighter such a standout. Verdict: Nothing revolutionary, but neither was The Fighter , and that turned out great. Gonna’ watch this one closer than the usual rom com. Silver Linings Playbook hits theaters November 21. There’s still time to change the title.

Kristen Bell And Dax Shepard’s Relationship Inspires ‘Hit And Run’

‘The first year or so we were dating, we wrestled a lot with, you know, my past,’ says Shepard, who also wrote and directed the movie. By Kara Warner Dax Shepard in “Hit and Run” Photo: Open Road Films Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard are putting their love on the line, so to speak, for the sake of their upcoming action-packed R-rated comedy “Hit and Run.” The plot revolves around former getaway driver Charlie Bronson (Shepard), who busts out of the Witness Protection Program to drive his girlfriend (Bell) to Los Angeles so she can land her dream job. Their road trip becomes increasingly complicated and dangerous when they are chased by the feds (led by Tom Arnold) and later Charlie’s former gang of criminals (led by Bradley Cooper). When MTV News caught up with the fun-loving, real-life couple recently, they provided expert teasery and commentary as to why we’ll all be dying to see them onscreen together in the film. “The first year or so we were dating, we wrestled a lot with, you know, my past,” said Shepard, who also wrote and directed the movie. “Uncovering details of his sordid lifestyle,” Bell added. “The movie became a metaphor for that, for a couple dealing with people’s past,” Shepard explained. “So we put that in a car-chase movie.” “Of course,” Bell said with a smile. “Naturally, it’s such an easy fit,” Shepard agreed. “Where I am in Witness Protection and Kristen’s [character] is a professor.” “Of course,” Bell agreed again with a smile. “Naturally. And, you know, I have an even shadier past than I’ve really let on, and that kind of becomes obvious over the course of me trying to drive her to L.A.,” Shepard said. “The sh– hits the fan, basically, to sum it all up,” Bell offered. And if Shepard and Bell’s witty and pretty adorable repartee doesn’t entice you to check out “Hit and Run” when it hits theaters August 24, you should also know that there are a lot of fancy and fun cars in the film. “I play one of the supporting characters in the film,” Bell said. “The lead lady is played by Lady Lincoln, this 1967 Lincoln that Dax has … ” ” … sunk our savings [into],” Shepard admitted. “Yes, for years, [he] spent every paycheck on and put a lot of heart and soul into,” Bell added. “He put race-car bucket seats in, 5-point harnesses … ” ” … 700 horsepower,” Shepard cut in. “700 horsepower. I got this,” Bell said to Shepard. “It’s beautiful. There are a lot of cars in the movie.” “If you couldn’t bring 500 horsepower to the table, your vehicle was not invited to be in it,” Shepard said.
