‘Twilight’ Stars Could Be Taking Over TV

Three Twi-actors are starring in new pilots — ‘Twilight’ Tuesday takes a look at who could be next. By Kara Warner Ashley Greene Photo: Didier Messens/ WireImage The news surrounding Hollywood’s annual TV pilot season has heated up in recent weeks with the casting announcements of not one, but three “Twilight” stars. It’s hard for us to think about life beyond the fifth and final Twi-film, “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2,” but it’s clear that the actors are thinking about life after the films that made them household names. This week’s “Twilight” Tuesday is dedicated to Ashley Greene, Rachelle Lefevre and Billy Burke, along with any other “Twilight” stars who make an appearance on the small screen in the coming months or years. Coincidentally enough, Greene has signed on to play another Alice, this time in the ABC drama “Americana.” The show revolves around a well-known family fashion house run by Robert Soulter (Anthony LaPaglia) that is suddenly shaken up by the arrival of a hot new designer in town (Greene). Other players in the mix include Emilie de Ravin (“Lost”) as Soulter’s fashionista daughter, Natalie Mendoza and Ken Olin. Lefevre, who originated the role of Victoria in “Twilight” and has a supporting role on “A Gifted Man,” has landed the lead in the CBS drama “Applebaum,” which is based on Ayelet Waldman’s Mommy Track Mysteries book series about a public defender-turned stay-at-home mom who eventually tires of being at home all the time and decides to return to work and become a private investigator. “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” director Chris Columbus will helm the pilot. Finally, Burke, a.k.a. Bella’s dad Charlie Swan, will appear in NBC’s action drama “Revolution.” Burke is set to play a charismatic Marine who is among a group of people trying to find their loved ones as well as a way to survive when all sources of energy in the world have, for some reason, disappeared from existence. The pilot will be executive-produced by J.J. Abrams and directed by “Iron Man” helmer Jon Favreau. So with all these Twilighters taking to TV, who’s next? I, for one, would love to see some tongue-in-cheek guest appearances by the cast on shows like “True Blood” or “Vampire Diaries.” Nikki Reed told me she’s dying to do a stint on HBO’s vampy soap, and I think if it were done right, it could be both awesome and hilarious. Jackson Rathbone just left his other passion project, the band 100 Monkeys, so surely he could fit in a couple of days as a mysterious stranger/being in Mystic Falls, right? ‘Twilight’ Star Ashley Greene: Three Birthday Wishes

In the final year of the franchise that made her famous, ‘Twilight’ Tuesday shares three wishes for the birthday girl. By Kara Warner Ashley Greene Photo: Lester Cohen/ WireImage In honor of “Twilight” star Ashley Greene’s 25th birthday, this week’s “Twilight” Tuesday is three birthday wishes for the actress: 2012 Box-Office Success “Twilight” fans will make sure the fifth and final film in the franchise, “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2,” will be a success, so we’re not worried about that one. Looking ahead to Greene’s upcoming slate of non-“Twilight” films, we’re excited to see her “saucy” side in teen comedy “LOL,” in which she stars alongside Miley Cyrus and Demi Moore. We’re also intrigued to see how much she’ll scare us (or be scared) in “Apparition,” which opens in August. More Leading Roles Although plenty of attention is paid to “Twilight” superstars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, Greene has always stood out for us in the way she plays Alice Cullen with such sweetness and sincerity — not to mention her mental and physical toughness. We’d like to see Greene carry a film on her own, specifically a romantic comedy or romantic drama. We’re thinking something along the lines of Rose Byrne’s character in “Bridesmaids” or a Rachel McAdams-esque romantic drama. Stay a Role Model In a world that seems to celebrate the comings and goings of starlets based on their outrageous antics onscreen and off, Greene has handled her rise in fame with poise and class. We appreciate the fact that she has made exquisite and enviable choices when it comes to her red-carpet fashions, which won her a Style Icon Award at the Hollywood Life Young Hollywood Awards. And with respect to making headlines, Greene managed to keep her relationship with former flame Joe Jonas mostly under wraps and free from any tabloid scandal. She did have one nude-photo scandal early on, but the woman recovered gracefully and appears to have a solid head on her shoulders — and we hope she stays that way. “I went from dying to get a gig, to dying to get the gig everyone wants,” Greene has said of her rise to fame via her role in “Twilight.” “So now I’m in this realm with a lot of highly respected actresses, which is an amazing place to be, but also kind of terrifying. … I’m so laser-focused on my career, because when you’re dealt these cards, if you don’t kind of run with it, then you’re an idiot. You gotta take advantage of what you’ve been given.” What birthday wishes do you have for Ashley Greene? Let us know in the comments or tweet me @karawarner! ‘Breaking Dawn’ Secrets Revealed: Kristen Stewart’s ‘Doll’ Double

“It was creepy … in a good way,” special effects supervisor tells MTV News of creating the Kristen Stewart look-alike. By Kara Warner Kristen Stewart in “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit Entertainment For all the “Twilight” fans familiar with “Breaking Dawn,” via both Stephenie Meyer’s source material as well as the movie “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1,” you know that the much-discussed, heavily hyped birth scene is one of the more graphic and disturbing scenes in all of Meyer’s mostly PG-rated world. It’s safe to say that curiosity was fully piqued when it came to seeing how director Bill Condon decided to adapt it in the film. In a nutshell, the scene is pretty graphic and cringe-worthy. For those who have seen the “Making Of” documentary with the recently released DVD/Blu-Ray or happened to catch the sneak peek MTV News got ahead of time last week, you’ve been introduced to the Bella doll that the filmmaking team used in place of Kristen Stewart for a few scenes. This week’s Twilight Tuesday brings you a few fun details about the making of the doll, to which I affectionately refer as “Robot Bella” (even though it/she is clearly not a robot). According to John Rosengrant, the film’s animatronics and special makeup effects supervisor, the idea behind the creation of the Bella replica doll was to make the birthing/near-death scene appear as real as possible and to show Bella in her very emaciated form that Meyer describes in the book. “It’s very hybrid, the approach,” he told MTV News. “We tried to shape the whole Bella, what she looks like emaciated and all that, but it’s also digitally augmented, and that was from the get-go, this was going to be a hybrid-type effect.” If you look closely at the features of the doll, especially when Robert Pattinson is shown acting out that very emotional scene with it, there is a creepy element involved. “It was creepy when we created the look of her, in a good way,” Rosengrant said. “I was actually shocked that that was the edict and I think that is maybe [credit] to Bill Condon as the director, wanting to make something like that real because the previous movies didn’t strike me that they would embrace something like this.” What are you looking forward to most in “Breaking Dawn Part 2”? ‘Breaking Dawn – Part 2’ Exclusive Clip Premieres

‘I loved Bella’s piercing red eyes … I’m even more excited for ‘Part 2′ now,’ fan Cynthia Rodriguez says of teaser debut at NYC Target store. By Erin Strecker Fans watch a clip from “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” at Target in Brooklyn, New York, on Friday Photo: Erin Strecker/ MTV News Vampires may come out after dark, but there weren’t any bloodsuckers at the Brooklyn, New York, Target store Friday night — just roughly a hundred women (and a few guys) who wanted to meet one. The crowd was anxiously waiting to pick up the DVD of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1,” which was released at midnight. But it wasn’t just the thrill of re-watching Bella and Edward’s honeymoon that had these NYC Twi-hards — some of whom had been in line since 8 p.m. — bubbling with the kind of excitement normally reserved for a newborn vamp chasing his first kill. At 11 p.m., as promised, exclusive footage from “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” was shown for the first time at 500 Target stores nationwide. “Part 1” may have featured a wedding, but the fandom wars over who should have Bella’s heart were still raging on as the countdown to new footage began, with passionate discussions about Team Edward and Team Jacob popping up throughout the crowd. Friends Patrice Waite, 21, and Cynthia Rodriguez, 22, may not be able to agree on matters of vampire vs. werewolves, but the duo, who lovingly refer to themselves as “Team Switzerland,” can agree that they are psyched to see “Part 2,” even as they reminisced over “Part 1” scenes such as the romantic wedding and the intense birth of Renesmee. “In a perfect world,” Waite said, “the scene [I want to see tonight] would be when they are at the cottage, and they go all out [having sex], breaking walls and stuff.” “I want to see more of Renesmee [in Part 2]” Lauren Perciballi, 25, said. “I’m anxious to see how that works out because it’s a vampire/human, so she’s growing at a rapid pace. I’m interested to see the special effects behind that.” The actual clip may have been sex-and-Renesmee-free, but the five-minute-long tease certainly worked to entice fans gearing up for the premiere of “Part 2” next November. Aside from some behind-the-scenes shots of Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner preparing for battle in the woods, the full, exclusive-to-Target scene is from early on in the movie, when Bella discovers a note in a book with instructions from Alice, explaining what to do to get new passports. The clip showcases a heart-to-heart between Edward and Bella and features a swoon-worthy kiss that made the audience scream. The best part? Judging from fan reaction, it was the first shot of vampire Bella, whose red eyes and special-effect-aided speed definitely enticed Twi-hards to be even more excited for the next chapter in the saga. “[The clip] was good,” Waite said. “Of course, it was just a little clip, making us want more. I wasn’t expecting that, but it was pretty good. I loved seeing [vampire Bella] zoom across the room.” Rodriguez agreed. “I loved Bella’s piercing red eyes. I thought they did a good job [with the vampire stuff]. I’m even more excited for ‘Part 2’ now.” Not everyone at the event was a vampire lover though. Special sneak peek or not, the fandom wars continue on. While Kimberlee Imperato was excited about the special footage and loved newly vamped Bella, her daughter, 14-year-old BaileeAnn Darbasie, wasn’t impressed. “[My mom] dragged me here,” she explained. “I’m a Harry Potter fan.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Kelly Rowland Pushes for U.S. X Factor Gig

Simon Cowell may not have offered Beyonce $100 millon, but he made it clear in a recent interview that he’d love for the former Destiny’s Child singer to sit at the judging table on season two of The X Factor . We wonder if he’d settle for another ex-member of that group, however. Speaking to CNN this week, Kelly Rowland – who served as a panelist in Great Britain – made it clear she’d embrace the same role here on Fox. “It would be awesome to be a judge over here for The X Factor ,” the artist said . “I really enjoyed my time over in the U.K. being a judge. That was a great opportunity and a great experience, and I would love to do it again.” But is Rowland a big enough name to help Cowell boost the ratings of a series he swore would outdraw American Idol ? We doubt it. Stay tuned. [Photo: WENN.com]

Kevin Youkilis Engaged! To Tom Brady’s Sister!

Kevin Youkilis is keeping it all in the Boston family. The Red Sox third baseman is engaged to Julie Brady, according to The Boston Herald , the sister of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. Youkilis first met Julie – a teacher and the mother of a five-year old daughter – at a 2010 party thrown for the Patriots party after they was knocked out of the 2010 playoffs. She’s one of the signal caller’s three sisters. The engagement announcement comes as a time when both Boston stars could use some good new: Brady and the Pats lost in the Super Bowl last weekend, while Youkilis and the Red Sox made history with a September 2011 collapse that cost them a spot in the American League playoffs.

REVIEW: Star Wars: Ep. I – The Phantom Menace Adds Stunning Third Dimension of Meh

The re-release of  The Phantom Menace  opens with that exhilarating blast of John Williams’s famous theme, the Star Wars  title zooming off into the distance in 3-D before the familiar text crawl creeps across the starry backdrop, revealing the words we’ve all been longing to see back on the big screen: “Turmoil has engulfed the Galactic Republic. The taxation of trade routes to outlying star systems is in dispute.” Ah, yes. Rewatching this film (for me, the first time since it opened in theaters over a dozen years ago) really makes you admire the gutsiness of returning to one of the most beloved franchises of all time only to open with stalled galactic taxation negotiations. It takes you back, like some three dimensional Proustian sci-fi madeleine, to that feeling of slow deflation shared by so many back in 1999 as they fought to keep up their levels of enthusiasm as  Episode I herked and jerked along. As an admirer of select  Star Wars films but no serious devotee of the series, I don’t have quite the complicated relationship with George Lucas experienced by some fans, the emotional complexity of which is generally only otherwise seen in memoirists writing lyric essays about their loving but abusive fathers. And from a business perspective, the Star Wars films are a great candidate for the callous but surely profitable enterprise of transferring classics to 3-D and dumping them back into theaters with pricier tickets. But  The Phantom Menace , in any number of dimensions, is an exercise in disappointment, a film filled with enough callbacks to the first trilogy to remind you about what you loved about them without adding much of note in all the new material. The 3-D looks fine, if subdued enough that you forget about it for long stretches. A few sequences do get a boost — the fraught journey through a planet’s sea monster-heavy core, for instance, and even more so the podracing sequence, which look particularly great in the Anakin’s-eye-view shots as camera darts through the rock formations. But 3-D tends to highlight spectacle, and much of The Phantom Menace is anything but: Senate or Jedi council debates, wooden exchanges between Jake Lloyd and Natalie Portman that are meant to indicate some deep (and future romantic) connection, and the parade of bizarrely racialized aliens, including freakin’ Jar Jar Binks. The film features some greatly imaginative worlds and scenarios, from watery Naboo’s hidden bubble-encased Gungan cities to the insectile droidekas to Tatooine’s ludicrously dangerous sport of choice (“Looks like a few Tusken Raiders have camped out on the canyon dune turn!” as the crowd cheers). Darth Maul (played by Ray Park and voiced by Peter Serafinowicz) still makes a major impression, pacing like a caged tiger during a force field-mandated pause in his duel with Liam Neeson’s Qui-Gon Jinn and Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi. Queen Amidala’s outfits are still ridiculous and awesome, and Portman’s trade-offs with Keira Knightley as the royal bodyguard/stand-in are easier to spot now that the latter’s face has become just as familiar. The rest of  The Phantom Menace tends toward the dull — not always the terrible (though early in the film a lot of the dialogue sounds like a badly dubbed Google translation of something originally written in a language other than English), but the legitimately wan and colorless. The film serves as a feature-length extrusion of exposition for what’s to come in later installments, with a few livelier sequences inserted as payoff for sticking around this space opera. It’s both a shame and unavoidable that  Episode I  was re-released first in this planned 3-D roll-out of the entire series, but if you’re going to splurge on the extra for a 3-D ticket you might as well wait for A New Hope in 2015. Even if the conversion doesn’t add all that much overall to the experience, as is the case here, that one’s going to be much more fun to see on the big screen and with a crowd.
