Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Paramore Salute Troops At ‘VH1 Divas’

Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Who says there’s no room for divas in the military? On Friday night, VH1 brought out the big guns in female music — plus their male backed bands — for “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops,” taped at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego. Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Keri Hilson, Paramore, Sugarland and Grace Potter & the Nocturnals all performed for the troops, along with special celebrity appearances. Set in a large air hangar, hostess Kathy Griffin made a grand entrance atop a missile flanked by Marines, wearing nothing but a camouflage bikini. She set the tone for the night by reading the official USO rules for entertainers, and then proceeded to break every single one. Of course, the sharp-tongued comedian pointed out the divas that couldn’t be there: Whitney Houston, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey and Justin Bieber. “Turns out he’s a dude,” Griffin joked. The night’s first performance actually took place across the globe. Paramore taped their portion at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait. Hayley Williams (rocking cotton candy-colored hair) and company belted out “The Only Exception.” Back in San Diego, the show really got started with pop pinup Katy Perry. Hanging from a harness that looked like an American flag parachute, Katy floated over the crowd while performing “California Gurls.” Decked out in full patriotic gear, Katy followed with “Teenage Dream” and “Hot and Cold.” Next up were Sugarland, who were introduced by supermodel Marissa Miller and a special serviceman, Sugarland vocalist Jennifer Nettles’ brother. The country duo performed “Stuck Like Glue” with MC Lyte, and continued with “Tonight” and “All I Want to Do.” Griffin returned with the biggest crowd favorites, “Jersey Shore” stars Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino. Griffin dubbed Snooki “Agent Orange” and made Mike agree to stay away from grenades. But really, they were there to introduce one of the standout performers of the night: newcomers Grace Potter & The Nocturnals. Grace and her band started with the opening licks of the “Top Gun” theme song — after all, this was the same base where the classic ’80s flick was filmed. Decked out in a shimmery short dress and commanding a creamy flying V guitar, Grace jumped into “Paris (Ooh La La)” and “Medicine” before being joined by Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart for their classic “Crazy on You.” They closed out the set with a rousing rendition of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World.” Next was Nicki Minaj, straight from the pages of an anime comic book. Rocking a curly pink wig, red and blue graphic dress and matching mint-green leggings and heels, the diva MC tore through her Pink Friday hits “Moment 4 Life,” “Right Thru Me” and “Roman’s Revenge.” But before Nicki was finished she was joined by Perry for a playful performance of Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” Following the cover theme, Paramore were back in Kuwait with an epic rendition of the Foo Fighters’ anthem “My Hero.” Keri Hilson kept the energy high with an aggressive performance of “Turning Me On,” following with “Knock You Down” and “Pretty Girl Rock.” She then joined Sugarland to cover Aretha Franklin’s “Think.” Perry closed out the show in true diva form, with an explosive performance of “Firework,” complete with a massive spectacle of, well, fireworks. She dedicated the song to everyone serving in the military around the world. And just at that moment the camera spotted a Marine hoisting a sign that read “Katy, you’re our firework.” “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops” airs Sunday, December 5, on VH1 at 9 p.m. ET. Britney Spears: A Look Back At Her Singles … So Far

With her new album due in March, we revisit some of the pop princess’ many hits. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears Photo: Jive Now that Britney Spears has announced that she will be releasing a new album in March 2011, fans must be wondering what her latest musical endeavor will sound like. The as-yet-untitled effort is a follow-up to 2008’s well-received Circus , which helped resurrect the singer’s career after a dark time in her life. No information regarding the upcoming album has emerged, but Britney’s faithful followers have watched her change up her look and sound with each single over the span of her decade-plus career, as she evolved from a bubblegum-pop princess to a sexy dance-club siren. Let’s trace Spears’ musical journey by taking a look at some of her most memorable tunes. In 1999, a fresh-faced Spears released ” …Baby One More Time” (produced by Max Martin), the title track off her massive debut album. She got the conversation about her sexuality started thanks to a provocative video in which she danced around in a Catholic school uniform, as well as the song’s equally provocative lyrics, where she longingly sang, “My loneliness is killing me/ I must confess, I still believe/ When I’m not with you I lose my mind/ Give me a sign/ Hit me baby one more time.” It’s to be noted that the song originally was intended for TLC. In the video for “Oops! … I Did It Again” (produced by Martin and Rami Yacoub), Spears’ smash from the 2000 album of the same name, the pigtails and skirt were gone, replaced by a red catsuit. That visual, as well as the song’s lyrical content, reflected Spears’ evolution from naughty schoolgirl to intergalactic sex kitten, both in her video and on the song’s lyrical content. For “I’m a Slave 4 U” (produced by the Neptunes) off 2001’s Britney , Spears declared her sexual independence. No longer was she just teasing about the idea that she loved the beat of dance music and how sexy it made her feel, instead she was explicitly sharing it with the world. Plus, who could forget all the sweat in that video. In 2003, Spears teamed up with the Queen of Pop, Madonna, for “Me Against the Music” (produced by Christopher Stewart and Penelope Magnet), the sexy lead single from In the Zone . While the darker, more synth-heavy “Toxic” would become the album’s defining tune, “Me Against the Music” picked up where “Slave” left off: Spears battling the demon she has inside of her that just loves to come out on the dance floor. After a few years of not putting out any music, Spears hit the club again with 2007’s “Gimme More” (produced by Danja) off the aptly titled Blackout . Between the release of In the Zone and Blackout , Spears had married, divorced and become a mother — she also had started to act erratically. The track, which relied more heavily on underground dance and electro than most of Spears’ previous singles, was a highly sexualized tune about getting it on. After the darkness of Blackout , Spears got back to her fun and frolicking old ways on the 2008 Circus single “Womanizer” (produced by the Outsyders). The track was a return to form for Spears after the lackluster response to Blackout , and it brought the discussion back around to her music and away from her sometimes topsy-turvy personal life. In the song’s video, Spears gets back at a player, and really has the last laugh. The clip also features ffotage of a completely nude Britney in a steamy sauna. In 2009, Spears shot to the top of the charts with the danceable track “Three” (produced by Martin and Shellback) off The Singles Collection . The tune was an instant smash, and featured Spears robotically singing about a m

Britney Spears Fights Back

The allegation came from Spears#39;s one-time husband, Jason Alexander, whose 55-hour Las Vegas marriage to her was annulled in 2004. In the report, Alexander says Spears told him Trawick “beat on me,” and RadarOnline posted an audio clip of the alleged conversation between Alexander and Spears. The singer#39;s reps, however, deny the woman#39;s voice on the tapes belongs to the pop star. Britney Spears has a message for anyone claiming she was physically abused by her boyfriend: pucker up. Britney Spears’ Rep Denies Jason Trawick Abuse Story, Alleged Tape Recording in Statement

As you’ve probably heard, Britney Spears has been hit with serious allegations from Star and Radar Online, both of which claim the star’s boyfriend abused her. Britney purportedly called her ex-husband, Jason Alexander, to tell him about a beating she suffered at the hands of Jason Trawick . He has a recording of this. Now, both Spears’ manager, Larry Rudolph, and Trawick himself have strongly denied the allegations in a statement issued wide and posted on Britney’s site. The statement by Spears’ reps reads as follows: “Every aspect of the story published by Star Magazine is completely and utterly false and Star Magazine was informed of the falsity before it was published.” “The statements attributed to Jason Alexander are a complete fabrication as Britney has not had any form of communication with Mr. Alexander in years.” “The audio recording posted on Radar Online purporting to be between Britney Spears and Jason Alexander is so obviously fake as to be laughable.” “Suffice it to say, that Jason Trawick has never laid a hand on Britney.” “This is just another example of the irresponsible nature of the tabloid media relying on shoddy sources and false information for the sole purpose of selling magazines, without regard to the truth and without regard to who they hurt in the process.” “These irresponsible statements are defamatory and Britney Spears’ legal team will be taking legal action against all of the appropriate parties.” Earlier in the day, Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush also spoke with Jason Trawick directly, who said the assault allegations came out of nowhere. Trawick told Bush that he’s been busy arranging a charity screening of Secretariat for some children in the Valley and prepping for Spears’ birthday on Thursday. He added that the voice on the recording, posted on Radar , was clearly not Brit’s. When contacted by Access Hollywood earlier on Wednesday, David Perel, Executive Vice President of Radar Online , claimed that the recording was “100 percent verified” and a rep for Star responded that, “ Star stands by its story.” Hey, what do they have to lose at this point? In other news, happy birthday Britney !!!
