Wiz Khalifa Breaks Through To Hottest MCs List!

Wiz dukes it out with Big Sean, but the Pittsburgh spitter’s gold-selling debut and sold-out tour make him one of MTV’s Hottest MCs in the Game. By MTV News staff Wiz Khalifa Photo: Getty Images Wiz Khalifa stays high, so as expectations for his debut album, Rolling Papers, shot through the roof, the Pittsburgh rapper made good by delivering a gold-selling LP last March — with multiple hit singles to back it. That success and more was enough to take him from MTV’s 2010 Hottest Breakthrough MC to the Hottest MCs in the Game VII list. Not only did the Taylor Gang general snag the #2 spot on the Billboard 200 in his first week out — behind Britney Spears — he also dropped a collaborative album with Snoop Dogg ( Mac & Devin Go to High School ), blessed fans with the Cabin Fever mixtape, and sold out shows around the world on his Rolling Papers Tour. When it was all said and done, the Kush and Orange Juice spitter clocked in a reported $11 million and snagged the #11 spot on Forbes ‘ Hip-Hop’s Top Earners list . Want to join the debate? Just hit us on Twitter using the hashtag #HottestMC! “First of all, he won the Hottest Breakthrough MC and really fulfilled the promise that we all knew that he had,” MTV News Senior hip-hop Writer Rob Markman said. “To be this young and have this many accomplishments, almost three albums in a year, you gotta give it up to dude.” HOT STREAK Albums: Rolling Papers and Mac & Devin Go to High School (with Snoop Dogg) Selected Mixtapes: Cabin Fever Singles: “Black and Yellow,” “Roll Up,” “No Sleep” and “Young, Wild & Free” (featuring Snoop Dogg and Bruno Mars) Street Bangers: “On My Level” and “Taylor Gang” Key Guest Appearances: Tinie Tempah’s “Till I’m Gone”; DJ Drama’s “Oh My”; T-Pain’s “5 O’Clock”; and Cee Lo Green’s “Bright Lights Bigger City” Meteoric Metrics: Notched a #1 rap album with his certified-gold debut, Rolling Papers ; scored three platinum plaques for his “Roll Up,” “No Sleep” and “Young, Wild & Free” singles. Saw his 2010 single “Black and Yellow” peak at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 2011. Wiz also clocked in at #11 on Forbes ‘ Hip-Hop Top 20 Earners list, raking in $11 million last year. Business Ventures: Started his Taylor Gang label by signing rap veteran Juicy J and up-and-coming model/rapper Lola Monroe Tours: Rolling Papers Tour Monumental Moment: Wiz Khalifa racked up a series of wins last year, but after Rolling Papers went gold, the Pittsburgh spitter proved he could turn his Internet mixtape grind into a bankable, mainstream hustle. Forecast: After scoring a gold plaque for his debut, Wiz is already preparing a new mixtape ( Taylor Allderdice ) and his sophomore album ( O.N.I.F.C. ) for a 2012 release. He has already promised to outdo Rolling Papers. The criteria to be considered a Hottest MC are based on a combination of factors: impact, buzz, sales, lyrics, swag and the intangibles. The Taylor Gang captain meets all of them. His impact was huge, just look at the way veteran artists like Snoop and Juicy J lined up to collaborate with the youngster. Wiz’s buzz kept him a part of the overall 2011 hip-hop conversation and he notched impressive sales numbers. Khalifa also has a strong sense of style, as seen in his New York Times style magazine feature last September. And his relationship with Amber Rose kept him in the tabloids, adding an intangible element to his growing celebrity. After each member of MTV’s Hip-Hop Brain Trust submitted their personal Hottest MCs lists, Wiz landed the #8 spot. But then things took an interesting turn. After a heated roundtable debate and subsequent vote, Khalifa was bumped to #9 and G.O.O.D. Music upstart Big Sean snatched the #8 slot. The argument was fiery, and though most of the panelists agreed that Wiz’s success was remarkable, some contended that Rolling Papers was a critical disappointment and Khalifa had lost some steam in the past few months. “It’s a good album, but I think with the momentum and expectations, it didn’t live up to the hype,” said Yomi Desalu, MTV’s senior director of music and talent programming strategy. “But I just feel like I want him up there because of the full year, of the full stride, of the Rolling Papers Tour, of what he [accomplished],” Rebecca Thomas, an MTV News editor and writer, argued. If Wiz’s final position on the “Hottest MCs in the Game” list is debatable, his impact on hip-hop over the past year is irrefutable. With a bunch of accolades already under his belt, Khalifa has nowhere to go but up! Tune in to MTV2 on Sunday, February 19, at 10 p.m. ET/PT to catch ” MTV2 Presents: Yo! MTV Raps Classic Cuts ,” then watch “Hottest MCs in the Game VII” immediately after at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT before capping the night off with ” Sucker Free Certified ” at 11 p.m. ET/PT. Britney Spears Brings The Sexy Back

It’s been a while since I’ve seen Britney Spears in a tight little dress, and I’ve got to say I’ve missed it. Here she is at some event over the weekend looking more like her old hot self. Seeing this kind of thing almost makes me forget the bald chick attacking a car with an umbrella incident… Almost. I’m glad to see she’s back on track and expect to see some bikini shots real soon. We deserve it for putting up with all her crap

Whitney Houston’s Musical Legacy, By The Numbers

We break down the stunning sales numbers behind the late diva’s record-setting career. By Gil Kaufman Whitney Houston performs at the 1999 Brit Awards Photo: JMEnternational/ RedFerns There had been other explosive young divas before — Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner — but in the 1980s and early 1990s, Whitney Houston seized the spotlight so fast, so early, so young and so forcefully that she set a bar so high singers are still trying to vault it today. The daughter of gospel great Cissy Houston and cousin of “I Say a Little Prayer” singer Dionne Warwick, Houston was discovered as a teenager and burst into the national consciousness in 1985 with her self-titled debut. The seamless mix of wide-screen ballads and dance-floor-worthy anthems spawned such iconic hits as “You Give Good Love,” “Saving All My Love for You,” “The Greatest Love of All” and “How Will I Know.” A radiant breath of fresh air, Houston rode the music-video wave to stardom, scooping up dozens of awards for her smash first album, including two Grammys and an MTV Video Music Award for Best Female Video for “How Will I Know.” Along with Michael Jackson, Houston helped pave the way for a generation of black artists to exploit the video medium to reach a global audience. She did it by spinning off a string of indelible hits in such an joyful manner that her vocal feats of strength appeared effortless. On the eve of the 54th annual Grammy Awards , Houston was found dead Saturday in Los Angeles at age 48. At press time, the cause of death was still unknown. She had last taken the stage Thursday night at a pre-Grammy event on Thursday night. Just hours before the news broke, friend Kelly Price said stories of Houston’s ongoing struggles were exaggerated. CNN reported Saturday night that Jennifer Hudson would participate in a tribute to Houston at Sunday night’s Grammys. Houston died just hours before the start of the annual pre-Grammy party thrown by legendary music impresario Clive Davis, the mogul who signed Houston to Arista Records after seeing her perform in New York clubs in the early 1980s. Though her hitmaking days were long past, Houston’s influence continues today, from the sound of such avowed acolytes as Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and Mary J. Blige to an untold number of singers hoping to stake their claim on such reality singing competitions as “American Idol,” “X Factor” and “The Voice.” Houston’s muscular, gospel-tinged vocal gymnastics and her telegenic spark raised the bar to a level today’s singers — from Rihanna to Adele — are still striving to achieve. By the time her career faltered in the 2000s as she struggled with substance abuse , personal drama and vocal issues, Houston had already blazed an unstoppable trail and was ranked by the Guinness Book of World Records as the most celebrated female vocalist of all time, including 26 Grammy nominations and 6 wins, along with sales of more than 170 million albums, singles and videos. Some of Houston’s career achievements:

You Want… What?!?: The 10 Most Ridiculously Random Celebrity Tour Rider Requests Ever!

Please and Thank You! During a 1982 world tour, Van Halen, a famous rock band in the 80′s made the now-legendary demand that all brown M&Ms be removed from candy bowls in their dressing rooms. Ever since, fans and critics have made a hobby of finding celebrities’ often outlandish demand lists, called riders; for what venues must provide them during appearances. This week, Super Bowl bird-flipper M.I.A.’s tour rider leaked and it was full of fawkery! Buried among requests for Vitamin Water and European cheeses is the demand for “three women between the ages of 20 and 25 to dance on stage wearing full-body burqas.” So here’s a look back at ten of the most ridiculous items on other celebrity riders…

Grammys Live Stream: What Shocking Entrances Will We See?

How will Lady Gaga arrive this year? Join Sway and James Montgomery on the red carpet, starting 5 p.m. Sunday on MTV.com. By Gil Kaufman Jennifer Lopez at the 2000 Grammys Photo: Getty Images What’s the point of getting all dolled up for the Grammy Awards if no one notices your outfit? Since not everyone can earn a nomination or score a performance slot, sometimes you have to make your own news by crashing the red carpet with an eye-popping outfit that is sure to get tongues wagging. It’s anyone’s guess what this year’s attendees will be wearing on Sunday night at the 54th annual awards show, but MTV News will be camped out on the carpet for a full three hours before the festivities kick off and we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for all the outrageous looks and fashions. Click for photos of our most-shocking Grammy red carpet moments! In the meantime, we thought it was worth a look back at some of the legendary entrances from Grammys past: Lady Gaga egg : Sure, Justin Bieber toted his pet snake to last year’s show, but it was, of course, Lady Gaga who turned the most heads by getting carried down the carpet in a giant, see-through egg that she incubated in before emerging later in the night for her performance of “Born This Way.” Britney gets bodied : Britney Spears has long prided herself on wearing what she wants, when she wants. But someone should have pulled her aside in 2010 before she exited the car in an oddball Dolce & Gabbana bodysuit overlaid with a lace dress that turned heads for all the wrong reasons. M.I.A.’s pregnancy chic : With her middle finger firmly tucked into place, the rapper/singer made her way into the 2009 show while nine-months pregnant in a cartoony, ruffled blue maternity dress and matching sneakers. Coldplay play dress up : It was kind of cool when Coldplay stuck with their bold Sgt. Pepper’s-style suits for the whole Viva La Vida tour. But when they wore them to the 2009 show , it just felt … silly. OK Go … back to the drawing board : Viral icons OK Go are experts at drawing attention to their music with trippy, how-did-they-do-that videos. They drew mostly sniggers, though, when they donned matching brocade curtain-looking red-and-gold suits to the 2007 show. Their smartest move may have been to cover their faces with red cloth. R. Kelly, man of mystery : Kels has made a career out of being inscrutable , but his bold sartorial choice at the 2004 Grammys was, well, weird. From the neck down he wore an elegant three-button black suit and tie, but the matching Robin mask? Who knows? Alicia Keys gets funky : Nobody really knows what Keys was thinking in 2002 when she walked the carpet wearing embroidered jeans, sandals, a white tank and a sheer green sari-like shift with a built in, bedazzled headdress. Toni Braxton lets it all hang out : Sometimes it’s what you don’t wear that gets attention. In 2001, singer Braxton sported a barely-there white “dress” that hardly covered her assets with strips of material that dangled in the front and back. Jennifer Lopez’s plunging neckline : Way before she was an “American Idol” judge, Lopez sent hearts racing in 2000 with her instantly infamous plunging neckline Versace gown. Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Don’t miss our Grammy red-carpet live stream this Sunday, February 12, for a full three hours of mayhem, starting at 5 p.m. ET on MTV.com. Is Nicki Minaj A Lock For Best New Artist Grammy?

Femcee seems anything but ‘new’ at this point, but it remains to be seen if her domination translates to Grammy gold come Sunday. By Rob Markman Nicki Minaj Photo: Getty Images It’s getting increasingly difficult to think of Nicki Minaj as a new artist. If you judge the Young Money raptress by the time she’s spent in the game, then she is no doubt a newcomer. On the other hand, if you measure the “Super Bass” star by her accomplishments, then she has accumulated enough stats in 14 months to rival some industry veterans. Though it may seem unfair to some that she is even nominated, Nicki’s accelerated artistic growth makes her a heavy favorite in the Best New Artist category at the 54th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday. When weighted against other Best New noms like the Band Perry, Bon Iver, J. Cole and Skrillex, Nicki’s path is a unique one. She started out an MC but grew into so much more under the direction of YM head honcho Lil Wayne. When Weezy first discovered Minaj rapping on a street DVD, she was as cocksure and combative as any of her male counterparts, but after signing with Young Money, Nicki used the platform to amplify the natural performance talents that existed within. There were glimpses on her 2009 mixtape Beam Me Up Scotty, but it wasn’t until the Harajuku Barbie dropped her debut, Pink Friday, in November 2010 that her full potential was unleashed, when she displayed her passion for both rapping and singing. Yes, technically her debut album was released in the 2010 calendar year, but the Grammy calendar does leave wiggle room and make her eligible for the Best New Artist nomination. The Queens, New York, rap star didn’t start out the gate as hot as some speculated, but she did snag the #1 album spot on the Billboard charts in her 11th week. In October 2010, Minaj set a record for having the most singles on the Hot 100, notching seven songs at the same time. “Your Love,” “Right Thru Me” and the Drake-featuring “Moment 4 Life” all made significant radio impact, but it was “Super Bass” that proved to be her biggest and most inescapable hit. Nicki, with the help of alter ego Roman, has emerged as a strong visual artist as well through her “Moment 4 Life” video and the super colorful “Super Bass.” The rap rook has also toured with Britney Spears and Lil Wayne. It’s also important to note that Nicki’s prowess in the studio has led her to be a ubiquitous figure in pop culture. She has had a Barbie doll made in her likeness, inked a deal for her own nail polish with OPI, became the face of MAC’s 2012 Viva Glam campaign and has either appeared on the covers or shot for too many glamour magazines to name. Yes, Nicki Minaj does seem to be a lock for Best New Artist, but then again, this is the Grammys and no one ever thought Esperanza Spalding would beat out pop icon Justin Bieber . So maybe the Band Perry have a shot after all. Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Don’t miss Sway and James Montgomery live from the Grammys red carpet this Sunday, February 12, for a full three hours of mayhem, starting at 5 p.m. ET on MTV.com. Pauly D’s ‘Jersey Shore’ Spin-Off To Premiere March 29

MTV’s ‘The Pauly D Project’ will feature its own cast of colorful characters. By Rob Markman Pauly D Photo: WireImage It isn’t all GTL with Pauly D, and on his new MTV show, “The Pauly D Project,” the “Jersey Shore” breakout star is ready to show the world a whole new side. As a DJ, Paul “Pauly D” Delvecchio has already accomplished more than his “Shore” fans may realize. He’s toured with Britney Spears , earned himself a residency at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and signed a deal with 50 Cent’s G-Note Records. “The Pauly D Project” will follow the Rhode Island native as he handles his growing musical stardom. “It’ll be probably along the lines of, I used to be this DJ in Rhode Island, DJing two sets a week, hustling, promoting,” Pauly explained to MTV News back in January 2011. “And all of a sudden, I’m on this show, and now they’re sending private jets for me to DJ for these huge crowds, yet I’m still the same guy that was DJing for 200 people, just loving life.” On this journey Pauly will have to separate from his “Shore” family, but the new show promises its own cast of colorful characters. There’s Pauly’s road manager from Rhode Island, Michael “Biggie” Morgan, and the DJ’s personal bodyguard and friend Gerard “Big Jerry” Gialanella. For photos of Pauly D over the years, click here. Don’t be surprised if Pauly’s G-Note boss also makes a couple of cameos. In December, 50 Cent spoke about Pauly’s new show and how it will become a springboard for his music. “He obviously has a huge platform moving forward. His show is a spin-off from ‘Jersey Shore,’ ” 50 said. “And being in front of large audiences every night DJing — we’re gonna make a hit record out of the actual material that we have around and some of the new stuff that we’ll put together.” As a part of the “Jersey Shore” cast, Pauly helped drive that show to become TV’s hottest series over the course of five seasons, so there’s no telling what he will bring to the first “Shore” spin-off. You’re just going to have to tune in. “The Pauly D Project” will premiere at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT on Thursday, March 29, immediately following the all-new “Punk’d” series. Don’t miss “Jersey Shore” every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on MTV. For continuing “Shore” coverage, be sure to check in with MTV’s Remote Control blog. ‘The Voice’ Returns For Second Season With Big Post-Super Bowl Show

Christina Aguilera And Adam Levine Spar As First Round Of “The Voice” Blind Auditions Gets Underway By John Mitchell Christina Aguilera on “The Voice” Photo: NBC “The Voice” returned to NBC for its second season immediately following Super Bowl XLVI and got right to business, kicking off the first round of blind auditions with coaches Adam Levine , Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton each picking up one team member and Christina Aguilera scoring two. Seven hopefuls stepped in front of the judges’ revolving chairs, each hoping at least one would turn and ask them be on their team. Two contestants got all four judges’ approval, but one, 24-year old Daniel Rosa from Riverside California, didn’t get a single judge to turn their chair and offer a spot and was sent home packing. The Players: Rae Lynn A teenager raised on a Texas farm, Rae Lynn entered the competition with one thing in mind: to win over judge Blake Shelton, who is married to country singer Miranda Lambert, a big hero of Rae Lynn’s. She decided to sing Lamberts “Hell on Heels” despite being warned that last season Shelton didn’t respond well when a contestant auditioned with one of his wife’s songs. But confident in her choice, she did it anyway and wowed Shelton and Levigne. Ultimately, she chose to stick with her roots and keep things country. Team Blake Jesse Campbell One of many inspiring stories told during the show, we were introduced to 42-year-old homeless father Jesse Campbell and his family. He’d barely uttered a few notes before Aguilera, Green and Levigne swiveled around (Shelton followed soon after). “You followed through above and beyond my expectations,” she told Campbell, promising to fight for him along the hard road to the “Voice” finals. Trusting that Aguilera knows a thing or two about how to get the most out of strong vocalists, Jesse picked the “Not Myself Tonight” singer. Team Xtina Juliet Simms Simms has been living the rock-and-roll life since she was a teen and is now, at 25, looking to take that next step. Simms tackled a big song too — “Oh! Darling” by the Beatles — but brought a rough, throaty edge and rocker swagger to the track that immediately attracted Levigne and Cee-Lo and, eventually, Aguilera. “You brought the house down,” Christina said to Simms. Competing over the singer’s affections even devolved into a bit of mudslinging between Aguilera and Levigne, who bickered back and forth over who could better serve Simms in the contest. She decided to go with neither and picked the most eclectic guy on the panel. Team Cee Lo Chris Mann Another of the night’s tear-jerker back stories came from Mann, a talented classical musician working in Nashville, TN, whose mother is fighting pancreatic cancer. The 29-year-old Wichita, Kansas, native was the second contestant of the competition to bowl over the judges with a big, classic voice. “Now that’s a voice,” Xtina proclaimed, “I love it!” Her enthusiasm led him to pick the “Beautiful” Grammy winner, and in the first night of competition she nailed down the two best voices in the game so far. Team Xtina Tony Lucca Hey, that guy looks familiar! Lucca was at one time a Mousketeer alongside Christina, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears on “The Mickey Mouse Club.” But it was more important here that he tore the roof off the joint with a rocking rendition of “Trouble” that earned a swivel of approval from every judge on the panel. All pleaded with him to join their team, but Aguilera seemed oblivious to the fact that she knew him as a child (a lot has happened since then, we’ll give her that). He went with Shelton, probably hoping a little of the country-rock cool that’s kept him at the top of the charts for the last few years rubs off. Team Adam After he left the stage, Aguilera realized who Lucca was and ran backstage to greet him, his wife and young daughter. She also revealed, “Britney had the biggest crush on you!” Oh, what could have been.. Did you catch “The Voice” tonight? Which contestant was your favorite? Let us know in the comments below Related Artists Adam Levine Cee Lo Green Blake Shelton Christina Aguilera

Madonna’s ‘Give Me’ Video: Five Key Nods To Her Past!

From ‘Dick Tracy’ to ‘Like a Virgin,’ MTV News spots the best winks to Queen of Pop’s many reinventions in brand-new video. By John Mitchell Madonna in her “Give Me All Your Luvin’ ” music video Photo: Interscope Madonna dropped her “Give Me All Your Luvin’ ” video on Friday morning (February 3), and the eye-popping clip featuring Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. has fans even more excited for the Queen of Pop’s halftime performance at Sunday’s Super Bowl. In the video, Madonna hits the streets flanked by Minaj, M.I.A. and a very protective football team for a tongue-in-cheek walk down memory lane. In scene after scene, the pop icon references her musical past. We combed through the cheeky clip for some of the best winks at Her Madgesty’s numerous reinventions. Here are our top five: 1. Madonna Passes the Pom-Poms to Nicki, M.I.A. Some of the most famous images of pre-fame Madonna are of the Michigan native in her high school cheerleading uniform, so it seems fitting that in “Your Luvin’, ” there’s what seems to be a symbolic passing of the pom-poms to Minaj and M.I.A. The video opens with Minaj and M.I.A. flying high at the top of a cheerleading formation on a suburban street, just the way Madonna Louise Ciccone might have as a cheerleader at Rochester Adams High School. 2. Getting a Lift — “Material Girl”-Style Not only does the uniformed football team guarding Madonna offer up umbrellas to shield her from raining sparks and throw down their letterman jackets to give her a makeshift red carpet to walk on, but the boys give the singer a lift in a move that feels straight out of her “Material Girl” video — but with a twist. As they help her to keep steady, viewers soon realize she’s walking down the side of a building! 3. Dodging a “Dick Tracy” Gangster As the pop queen parades down an alleyway, an old-school car pulls up alongside her, and then someone rolls down a window and opens fire. The mysterious villain employs a weapon that looks just like the vintage Colt M1921 Thompson submachine guns used by the baddies in Madonna’s hit flick “Dick Tracy.” Luckily, the ever-vigilant team guarding her leaps in front of the fire. 4. Kissing Cheerleaders … That Seems Familiar Madonna’s never been shy about admitting she’s kissed (many) girls — and liked it. But we think this little lingering look at two masked cheerleaders smooching is probably a direct reference to Madonna’s infamous lip lock with Britney Spears at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. (For the record, that legendary moment made our list of Madonna’s top five best MTV performances ever!) 5. Nicki and Madonna Have Blond Ambition Madonna climbs over a pile of football players and straight into a dream sequence that’s a smorgasbord of references to Madonna’s past. When she emerges from the huddle, gone are her long, flowing locks and black leather ensemble, and in their place is a short white lace dress and curly platinum-blond wig that recalls her Blond Ambition/”Vogue” era. The nod to her “Like a Virgin” years is underscored the second the camera cuts to Minaj, who sports a wedding dress that (minus a few ruffles) looks like it came straight from Madonna’s 1984 VMA performance. And while Minaj isn’t wearing Madonna’s famed “boy toy” belt, she does make a reference to it, rapping, “You can be my boy toy.” Are you luvin’ Madonna’s new video?
