Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Watch the Throne drops to #2 on Billboard chart. By Gil Kaufman The Game Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images After more delays than a space shuttle launch, Compton rapper the Game will finally have his reward next week when his endlessly pushed-back fourth effort, The R.E.D. Album , debuts at #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. According to figures provided by SoundScan, the disc moved just under 98,000 copies, enough to grab the top spot but well below the first-week figures for his 2008 album LAX, which opened with 239,000 in sales. Either way, it’s just enough to beat out Jay-Z and Kanye West ‘s Watch the Throne , which drops to #2 in its third week, as sales dove 47 percent to 94,000 for a three-week total just north of 707,000. Among the new entries in the top 10 is a Barbra Streisand collection, What Matters Most — Barbra Streisand Sings the Lyrics of Alan and Marilyn Bergman (#4, 66,000), the debut from country supergroup Pistol Annies , Hell on Heels (#6, 42,000), which consists of Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe, and Angaleena Presley, and Muppets: The Green Album (#8, 30,000), with modern interpretations of the lovable puppets’ songs by OK Go, Weezer, My Morning Jacket, Amy Lee of Evanescence and the Fray. The rest of the top 10: Adele ‘s 21 (#3, 82,000), NOW 39 (#5, 44,000), Luke Bryan ‘s Tailgates & Tanlines (#7, 35,000), Jason Aldean ‘s My Kinda Party (#9, 29,000) and Eric Church ‘s Chief (#10, 24,000). Further down the line, Pavement singer Stephen Malkmus and his band the Jicks come in at #43 with Mirror Traffic (8,000), and 30 Seconds to Mars land at #76 with their new Unplugged set (6,000). Lil Wayne immediately jumped to the top of the iTunes album charts after Tha Carter IV dropped digitally following the VMAs on Sunday. He was followed by the Pistol Annies, Game, Adele, Jay and Kanye, Mumford & Sons’ Sigh No More, the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ I’m With You , the Muppets album, Foster the People’s Torches and Rihanna’s resurgent Loud . Maroon 5 continue to dominate the singles chart with “Moves Like Jagger,” while Foster the People are right behind with “Pumped Up Kicks,” Gym Class Heroes make a strong showing with “Stereo Hearts” (featuring Maroon’s Adam Levine) and Rihanna has plenty to toast as “Cheers (Drink to That)” comes in at #4. Rounding out the tally: Bad Meets Evil’s “Lighters,” LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem,” Wayne’s “She Will,” Lady Gaga’s “You and I,” Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass” and OneRepublic’s Good Life.” Things will surely be shaken up next week when Wayne’s Tha Carter IV crashes the charts with estimates that it could sell nearly 1 million copies. Also debuting are the Chili Peppers, as well as David Guetta, VMA pre-show performers Cobra Starship and Lenny Kravitz. Related Artists The Game Jay-Z Kanye West
The JoBro says he’s been working for over a year on a stage act to match his dance-heavy solo album. By Christina Garibaldi Joe Jonas Joe Jonas is gearing up for a very busy fall: He’s heading out on the road with Jay Sean for a 19-city tour ; his first solo album, Fast Life, hits stores October 11, and then he’ll jet off with Britney Spears for the European leg of her Femme Fatale Tour . Though his single, “See No More,” has been out for months, and he’s been performing all over the place lately, there’s still a chance this Jonas brother’s new sound might surprise his longtime fans. “The biggest difference is a little bit more urban and dance electronic stuff,” Jonas told MTV News at the mtvU VMA Concert to Benefit Lifebeat – Music Fights HIV . “I’ve been influenced by a lot of different artists throughout my life and this is my opportunity to kind of show the world a little bit more about what I like writing and what I like coming up with musically.” If he’s delivering that kind of sound, fans will probably expect him to show off his dance moves onstage, and Jonas says he’s been working to perfect them for quite some time. “It was a little bit difficult in the beginning to feel comfortable with it,” Jonas said of learning his dance steps. ” I’ve been rehearsing for a little over a year with Marty, who’s a choreographer I work with, and he’s made me feel a lot more comfortable onstage, a lot more comfortable in my own skin, which made the whole process 100 percent better.” Just last week, Jonas unveiled Fast Life ‘s album cover, which he said is the perfect representation of the upcoming release. “We had a couple of photo shoots trying to decide which direction we wanted to go in,” Jonas said of the album cover. “And just kind of came together with having a really cool background and explaining Fast Life. ” So what do those words mean for Jonas? “I think my life has been so crazy busy for the past year and a half, and I kind of wanted to show people a little bit more of what my life is about, bring them into it a little bit more, so that’s been a fun experience.” Jonas said. A night that started with Nick Cannon dangling from a rope concluded with one two semifinal acts earning an A. Read on for a rundown of last night’s America’s Got Talent performance show… Landon Swank on America’s Got Talent The Kinetic King – The second time was the charm for The Kinetic King. The best part about watching him was the hope that he’d mess up again. He claimed that he had a new “gadget.” He ditched the backup dancers permanently and forced everyone to wear goggles. There was ping pong balls and candy flying everywhere. The whole routine was shorter than before, but visually epic. My Grade: B+ Fatally Unique – The small town dance crew is now against the West Springfield Dance Team that has professional choreographers. The opening was similar to WSDT with the insane dancers. Unfortunately, the gate didn’t correctly close for them and it was distracting. I liked the improvement in the theme. The lifts were a bit sloppy, but the transition into faster music was interesting. After not being a fan of West Springfield, I prefer WSDT more. My Grade: B Landon Swank – There’s something endearing that Landon worked with his father to create his next act and even help him. This time he decided to do Russian Roulette, which we technically saw in the Las Vegas round with Frank Miles. The judges picked a button to explode Landon. It’s sadistic if the trick went wrong. Of course, Landon was safe. My Grade: A Gymkana – Gymkana pointed out that they are more of a school team that doesn’t perform on stages, so the biggest challenge was adding oomph. Instead of ladders, the teams now had Zuma Zuma’s chairs. The flipping was redundant, but the chair tricks were flawless. The flips took too long until the ring of fire. Someone tripped and the ring of fire almost engulfed a Gymkana member. They clearly didn’t get to finish their routine even though everyone was fine. My Grade: D+ Summerwind Skippers – The Sexy Skippers had a horrible mistake that was commended instead of being reprimanded. They also got the memo to have a “dark” instead of happy routine. The basic skipping in the beginning had decent choreography, but wasn’t anything special. The group had a very interesting group double Dutch section. Then they messed up again. My Grade: C- Snap Boogie – Snap tried a routine this time that had a bit of class in the beginning, but I’m not sure if it connected as well as it could have. The transition to the “Boogie Wonderland” was better except that I feared for the background dancers on the platforms on wheels. His visuals were great and his tricks were fun. His final flip looked like a flop, but he managed to save it. My Grade: B+ Anna Graceman – Anna claimed to put another twist on a song, but she’s been inconsistent. Anna’s lower-end of her vocals is not strong and during the chorus of “Home Sweet Home” it showed the most flaws. Her high end, on the other hand, was strong and had soul. Her vocal runs were nice as well. My Grade: A- Steven Retchless – Steven was intimidated by Zuma Zuma and changed his routine. Steven had a really cool air-walking section but I’m iffy on the extras. His routine wasn’t as engaging as his previous ones. I liked the use of the scaffolding and the insane split at the end. My Grade: B+ Smage Brothers Riding Show – It turns out that the whole Smage clan was filled with motorcyclists. All of the family and grandma helped out. I didn’t like the sleeping person opening, but I liked the uni-motorcycle and the thin ramp. The routine felt disjointed. I have to commend the whole family for getting involved. There was a minor mistake near the end, but it was covered up by the final flip that worked perfectly. My Grade: A Professor Splash – Professor Splash was going for a 70 foot dive where there was less padding this time around and this time was fire on top of water. The fire was a bit less dramatic than I hoped. His descent looked less centered, like his previous tricks. There wasn’t the drama of the kiddy pool, but it was still interesting. My Grade: B Landau Eugene Murphy, Jr. – Black Sinatra chose another Sinatra classic with more dancers and saxophonists on the side. There’s something pitchy about his opening, but when the full arrangement kicked in Landau gained confidence. The dancers weren’t distracting and I liked how he tried to prove that he could make a Vegas show by crooning. My Grade: A- Silhouettes – There are more video elements and props this time. I appreciated the opening because it wasn’t the same screen. It looked cool except the projection of the tree might have been misinterpreted as the group making the shape. I liked the combination of the spinning prop plus color of the map when they got to the screen. I had no clue what words they were trying to make, but the performance was a great improvement from the national monuments. My Grade: A-
A company suing pop star Britney Spears for cutting them out of a perfume deal is trying to gain access to her medical records to prove she can’t testify. At issue is the court-ordered conservatorship she is still under after her behavior in 2007-08, which she is citing as the reason for not giving a deposition. Her father, Jamie, and attorneys control Spears’ affairs. Britney will not be required to give a deposition to Brand Sense, which claims that it helped negotiate a perfume deal for Spears but was cut out of profits. Brand Sense wanted to see records proving Spears couldn’t testify. But L.A. Superior Court Judge Reva Goetz ruled that Brand Sense has no standing. [Photo: WENN.com]
VMA executive producer says Gaga’s commitment to her character raises the bar for future performers. Celebrity fans including former ‘NSYNC singer JC Chasez, tourmate DJ Pauly D and more weigh in on why Brit is still on top. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears with Lady Gaga as Jo Calderone at the 2011 VMAs Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images At the 2011 Video Music Awards , Lady Gaga’s alter ego Jo Calderone presented Britney Spears with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award by telling the audience that Spears “taught us all how to be fearless.” And that fearlessness was honored with a dance-heavy tribute to the pop star. Brit’s ever-growing legacy is the reason why she was so deserving of the special award, her celebrity fans and members of her inner circle told MTV News. “She never lets you down,” her longtime choreographer Brian Friedman told MTV News on the VMA black carpet on Sunday night. “She’s definitely not dull. There’s always something crazy coming around the next turn. I think it’s a mix between music, which is always incredible, the dance performance you see on the stage, the iconic videos, the fashion, and then the fact that she can’t be knocked down.” We spotted Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and more hanging out backstage! Those sentiments were mirrored by her pal and former ‘NSYNC member JC Chasez, who noted that even at 30, “She’s actually been around long enough [to have a tribute]. She has a body of work to pull from.” Spears’ former tourmate, DJ Pauly D , also gushed about the singer, who won Best Pop Video for “Till The World Ends.” Find out how Beyonc
Creative director Laurieann Gibson takes MTV News behind Gaga’s ‘performance art.’ By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga performs at the 2011 VMAs Photo: Getty Images When Lady Gaga showed up at the 2011 Video Music Awards , she wasn’t Lady Gaga anymore; she was Jo Calderone. Gaga’s creative director, Laurieann Gibson, spoke to MTV News days before the show went live, and she explained why Gaga wanted to stay in character all night long. “The idea of her being a performance artist — and it’s starting the performance on the red carpet and the idea that the performance never ends for her — is the first time I’ve experienced this with an artist,” she said. “I love it. That’s something that is specific to her, and the whole night was the performance, and it was important that Jo was a part of the whole night.” Gaga — or, rather, Calderone — opened the show with a lengthy monologue before launching into Gaga’s “Yo
Hey, Lady Gaga is just calling it like she sees it. Or at least like Jo Calderone, her male alter ego who performed at the MTV VMAs last night, sees it. Jo put on quite the show on stage, but also in the press room, where he weighed in with some, um, interesting remarks about Britney Spears. Asked if he would hook up with Britney, Calderone said this … “Well, maybe if she wants to, you know what I’m saying … She is f–king hot. Britney’s f–king hot. I don’t know. Gaga is my girl, but Britney’s f–king hot – this is f–king Britney Spears! Didn’t you jerk off to Britney when you were a kid?” Okay then. As for who the heck Jo Calderone – an anagram of “Alejandro” – thinks he is and where he came from, the drag version of Gaga had this to say: “I am from Jersey,” he said. “My family is from Palermo, Sicily. I’m not a singer or a model or an actor or anything. I’m just some guy.” But don’t call him a “guido.” He wasn’t happy when someone did. Perhaps he’s not a fan of Jersey Shore , where that’s a compliment? “I’m not a f–king guido!” Jo snarled. “What? You don’t like Italians? What the f–k is the matter with you? I am just a guy, you know.” “I just wanted to show my girl how much I love her. That’s all.” Jo said that Lady Gaga asked him to represent her at the VMAs. The 25-year-old Born This Way singer tweeted this morning, “To win 2VMAs, Best Video with a Message + Best Female Video for Born This Way means the world. I have never believed in a work so much.” We think it was Gaga. Apparently you never can tell. [Photo: WENN.com]
