Poor Thang: Critics Say Alicia Keys’ New Broadway Production “Stick Fly” Isn’t Worth The Hoopla

Apparently, a few theater reviewers missed the memo that Alicia Keys can do no wrong. Because while it isn’t hard to find reviews saying that her new production “Stick Fly” is the best thing to hit Black folks in theater since “Raisin In The Sun” or “Porgy and Bess,” everyone afraid to say they’re not drinking the kool-aid. Stick Fly, produced and scored by the No One singer, opened at the Cort Theatre on Thursday night (08Dec11), but the show has failed to meet critics’ expectations. Reviewer David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter has dismissed the show as “scattershot entertainment”, insisting the production “lacked emotional substance” and “comes up short as both comedy and dysfunctional family drama”. The New York Post’s Elisabeth Vincentelli blamed the show’s “sluggish” direction by Kenny Leon for its shortfalls, while the New York Daily News’ critic Joe Dziemianowicz echoed the same sentiment, stating the nearly three-hour show “could benefit from some tightening”. Keys didn’t escape criticism either – Rooney claimed the singer’s “transitional music is used too liberally, more often calling attention to itself than serving the dramatic tone”. But of course we know that all means nothing. The play, about two brothers who bring their new girlfriends (one of them white) home to meet their families on the same weekend, is set to run until January 29. And will probably kill at the box office because Alicia’s name is attached. Think about it: would these reviews change your level of interest in the play? Source More On Bossip! Lindsay Lohan: Thankful For Family, Playboy

This Thanksgiving, Lindsay Lohan is taking the time out to recognize the family, friends, and fans that love her, and the opportunities she still has in life. It’s not quite New Year’s, but she’s already resolved to spend the holidays basking in the support of those close to her and leave her legal woes in the past. “Lindsay is being thankful for her family, her fans and for the great year that lies ahead,” Lohan’s rep, Steve Honig, said today, regarding Linds’ plans. One thing she has to look forward to right away? After Thanksgiving, Lilo will promote her nude Playboy spread, in which she will channel Marilyn Monroe . Her cut from that naked venture? Nearly a million dollars. “Lindsay completed a successful photo shoot for Playboy and will be on the cover of the January / February issue, which hits newsstands in late December.” “The pictorial is absolutely fantastic and very tasteful, and will be accompanied by an interview that will let readers see another side of Lindsay,” Honig said . As opposed to her back side, and her front side, etc., etc. As for Thanksgiving, she’ll be spending it with her mom, Dina, sister Ali and two brothers, but, for obvious reasons, not her derelict of society dad Michael. He’ll be cooling his ass in rehab for the time being. Probably a good thing, since every time he drinks, it seems Kate Major calls 911 (she’s in rehab now too). Lindsay Lohan in Playboy sounds …

Katy Perry to Play Marilyn Monroe on Broadway?

My Week With Marilyn just hit theaters, but producers of the Michelle Williams vehicle are already thinking about their next move for the late blond bombshell: They want to take it to Broadway, with Katy Perry as the lead! Producer Harvey Weinstein tells E! he wants to develop a Broadway musical based on the movie, which stars Michelle Williams as Monroe (see trailer below). My Week With Marilyn Trailer “If the movie works, I would try to make a musical and go to [ Katy Perry ] first. I think she can play Marilyn on the Broadway stage… I think she would be amazing.” Why? For one, Perry has become a cheerleader of sorts for the flick. A remix of her hit “The One That Got Away” is being used in a new trailer for My Week With Marilyn . She’s also got one heck of a musical following. “Katy posted about it on Twitter and Facebook and the next thing you know 250,000 people have downloaded the trailer in an hour,” Weinstein said. Perry also did a recreation of Monroe for a video for “Teenage Dream” that was used for a 90-second commercial for German TV show Star Force . What do you think? Could she pull it off?!
