New Looper Trailer — To Watch, Or Not To Watch?

The existential crisis inherent to writer-director Rian Johnson’s ( Brick , Brothers Bloom ) upcoming sci-fi time travel flick Looper is, itself, quite a pickle: Mob hitman Joseph Gordon-Levitt finds his latest target, sent back in time from the future for execution, is… himself. (Well, in older, balder Bruce Willis form.) But how much more than that do you want to know about Looper ? If Johnson himself is advocating going in fresh, should we even watch these trailers? The matter is a personal one, as many a film has taught us. (Looking at you, Prometheus .) Those already committed to buying a Looper ticket come September 28 could forgo the latest international trailer, if the words “Rian Johnson,” “Joseph Gordon-Levitt,” “Bruce Willis,” and “time-travel” are enough to pique the curiosity. (I mean, they should be. Obviously .) If you know you want to watch the film, is it just tempting fate to peek at the roll-out of marketing clips and trailers in the months leading up to release? Can you even resist? On the other hand, trailers like this one, which reveals a lot more information, not to mention new looks at supporting characters and Gordon-Levitt’s prosthetic-nosed Willis impersonation, might be key to convincing those on the fence to put Looper on their must-watch list. And so Johnson, himself a savvy fellow of the world and denizen of the internet who knows how these things go, has Tweeted his own advice to prospective Looper -watchers: “If you’re already set on seeing Looper , I’d avoid any trailers from here on out. They don’t ruin the movie, but they tip a few little things that are fun to discover in the context of the movie.” So here we are. To watch, or not to watch? Tempt fate (or seize it like Gordon-Levitt and his Willisnose do!) below. Looper is in theaters September 28.

Jean-Claude Van Damme Goes To War Against ‘The Expendables’

‘I kill one of them,’ the Belgian action icon told MTV News about his role as a bad guy in the upcoming ‘Expendables’ sequel. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz If “The Expendables” brought the pantheon of action-movie heroes together for one balls-to-the-wall R-rated epic, then the amounts of badassery that “The Expendables 2” promises to bring to the table is even further off the charts. Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger are upping their game from cameos to full-fledged co-stars this time around, with Chuck Norris roundhouse kicking his way into the fray as well. And then there’s Jean-Claude Van Damme, who won’t be just another mercenary following Sylvester Stallone’s lead, either. Quite the opposite, in fact: The Muscles from Brussels is going to be the movie’s villain. “I play Mr. Vilain,” the actor told MTV News during a recent interview. “And I kill one of [the Expendables].” Which Expendable will meet his maker at Vilain’s hands? Van Damme wouldn’t spill the beans. But he did explain why he wanted to go the villainous route for “Expendables 2” rather than join Stallone’s rag-tag group of good-guy mercenaries. “They asked me if I wanted to be an Expendable guy, and they said it’s going to be a big franchise. But I don’t want to be in ‘Expendables 20,’ ” he said. “I want to play a villain to make a good impression. When you play a villain, you get more from Stallone. He gives you more screen time, and then we’ll see what happens. I think him and I did a good job together.” It’s not just his dynamic with Stallone that Van Damme enjoyed, either. The Belgian actor got to work with a healthy portion of the action icons on the “Expendables” cast, folks he already knew from various encounters over the course of his storied career. “You have all those guys: Chuck Norris, Arnold, Bruce Willis, and there’s lots of testosterone,” he said of the vibe on set. “In ‘Expendables,’ you have all of those guys with their trailers and bodyguards. I knew them all. I knew Chuck when I came [to Hollywood] years ago, Arnold with ‘Last Action Hero.’ Bruce Willis, I met him once on Sunset [Boulevard] while driving and racing together. Since I’d met all of them … I was the guy going there in a very friendly way. It was cool. For me, it was cool.” Of course, even with all of those stars in the mix, it’s Van Damme versus Stallone that fans will want to look out for. With Stallone set as the series’ protagonist and Van Damme in the mix as the main baddie, it’s bound to get explosive when these two titans finally clash on the big screen. “It’s like [George] Foreman versus Muhammad Ali,” he grinned. John Mayer Leaves ‘Shadow Days’ Behind In New Video

Mayer road-trips through America in his Born and Raised clip. By Jocelyn Vena John Mayer in his music video for “Shadow Days” Photo: Columbia In his new “Shadow Days” music video , John Mayer is leaving behind the bright lights and hustle and bustle of the big city for something simpler. The video is a road trip, with Mayer dressed up as a cowboy, making his way across the heartland of our great country to just chill out and let it all go. It’s a completely uncomplicated premise. Mayer treks through snowy landscapes, small-town motels, deserts and mountains to just find himself and, as the song addresses, let his past go. He leads an unfussy life in the clip, as he travels from place to place, buying guitars, eating greasy food in diners and rocking a cowboy hat with the sort of sincerity only a few guitar-slinging pop stars can pull off. Not much happens in the clip, but that’s kind of the idea. The story is nothing more than Mayer driving across America. But the sun-drenched message, perhaps, is that Mayer is looking to something simpler these days, given how his personal life has had some turmoil. For a man who has a reputation for breaking starlets’ hearts and has battled vocal-cord issues , Mayer seems to want to change his story and redirect the conversation back to his music. While the video opened with shots of a cityscape in all its artificial glow, it closes on a denim-clad Mayer, walking alone near the side of an abandoned road with just the sun to keep him company. “Shadow Days” is the lead single from his next album, Born and Raised, due May 22. He had planned to tour in support of the album this spring but had to cancel after he learned he was still battling a granuloma growth on his vocal cords. This video might be the closest things fans will get to a Born and Raised Tour. What do you think of John’s latest video? Share your reviews in the comments! Bruce Willis Is As ‘Kick-Ass’ As Ever In ‘Die Hard 5’

Producer Tom Rothman talks about John McClane’s return in the ’emotionally driven’ ‘A Good Day to Die Hard.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Bruce Willis in “Live Free Or Die Hard” Photo: Twentieth Century Fox One thing’s for sure when the next “Die Hard” flick hits theaters: Aging action stud John McClane is no worse for the wear and just as ready to rumble as he was back in 1988, when the first film hit theaters. With Bruce Willis back for the franchise’s fifth film, “A Good Day to Die Hard,” producer Tom Rothman has made it clear that the butt-kicking star is just as badass as ever. “[We’ve] started this week, just started. It’s all set in Russia,” he told MTV News at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. “Well there’s bookend scenes in New York, but it’s John McClane, goes to Russia and I think the technical term … is f—s everything up. And the fun part about it, though, is there’s a great moment where he says ‘It’s good a day as any to die.’ ” Sure, McClane is throwing about his signature swag in the film, but Rothman assures fans that the movie also has a lot of heart, courtesy of the relationship between McClane and his son, Jack (played by Jai Courtney). “He thinks his kid is a screw-up,” he explained. “But, in fact, it’s the opposite. The kid is more like the father than the father thinks. So it’s very, like all the best of the classic ‘Die Hards,’ very emotionally driven and very kick-ass.” Director John Moore of “Max Payne” and the “Omen” remake is set to helm “Die Hard 5” with Skip Woods penning the script. “A Good Day to Die Hard” is a follow-up to 2007’s “Live Free or Die Hard.” Check out everything we’ve got on “A Good Day to Die Hard.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com

The Rock Rules In Second Trailer For ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’

Bruce Willis Back To His Action Tricks In ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’

But actor tells MTV News the sequel has ‘action guys that can do things that I would never.’ By Kara Warner Bruce Willis in “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” Photo: Paramount From what we’ve seen thus far, “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” has a lot of things going for it. First, there’s that killer trailer , and second, there’s its cast of A-list action stars that include Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Bruce Willis . MTV News was lucky enough to catch up with the action legend recently, and we were able to glean some insider information from Willis regarding the specifics of his character, the expectedly kick-ass General Joseph B. Colton. “Joe Colton actually is the original G.I. Joe,” Willis explained. “In the story, he started the outfit a long time ago and that outfit is all the kids that have — I mean, they are kids. Everybody is kids to [me], but we had such a great cast in this film, really funny and strong and tough guys and funny guys. Pretty girls and funny at the same time.” Willis gave a special shout-out to “Friday Night Lights” alum Adrianne Palicki (a.k.a. Lady Jaye) for being especially entertaining during filming. “That girl cracks me up. She’s so funny. She made me laugh so many times, [she’s] just great,” Willis said. “[We’ve got] action guys that can do things that I would never. I can’t even call myself an action guy. This guy Byung-hun Lee [Storm Shadow] is so great. We’re going to put him in another movie, he’s so great, he’s just awesome.” In addition to the return of Storm Shadow, the film’s producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura told us that director Jon Chu has added many other elements from that aspect of the franchise. “We got red ninjas. We got Jinx. We have so much martial arts in this movie. It’s really great,” di Bonaventura said. Looper Trailer: New Look at Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Time-Travel Hit Man Spectaular

Looper ! The full trailer for writer-director Rian Johnson’s latest is here, planting Joseph Gordon-Levitt in time-travel assassin mode — at least until his older self (Bruce Willis) is one day sent back to the past to become his own next victim. What’s a smirky, brash young hit man to do? Don’t let him escape, that’s for… Oh, wait. There he goes. The rest is what it is, blending Johnson’s sleekness and class with pure sci-fi/action pulp. Works for me, even if the other genre angle generally doesn’t. Take Jeff Daniels’s word for it: “This time-travel crap just fries your brain.” Thoughts? [via ENTV ]

‘Looper’ Trailer: Five Key Scenes

Joseph Gordon-Levitt stares down his older self (Bruce Willis) in sneak peek of the time-traveling thriller. By Kara Warner Joseph Gordon-Levitt in “Looper” Photo: Sony Pictures Entertainment We’ve been dying to see the “Looper” trailer for the past few days, and now it’s finally here, in all its time-traveling, gun-fighting, trained assassin-vs.-himself glory. Here are five key scenes from the sneak peek: Loopers Explained Thanks to the expository voice-over from star Joseph Gordon-Levitt , we learn that Loopers are time-traveling assassins hired by Mafioso types to kill other criminals in the past, so they don’t become problems in the future. We see Gordon-Levitt’s character “at work” in several different ways in the teaser — including one in which his assignment turns out to be his older self. A Realistic Futuristic Setting At the beginning of the trailer, it appears as if the film is set in present day. The characters’ style of dress, cars and guns are not exactly current, but they look familiar. All that changes when we see Gordon-Levitt’s character flying through a modern-looking city on a not-of-this-world motorcycle. The brief glimpses at advanced technology are paired with quick shots of what Gordon-Levitt’s character experiences when he travels through time, a sort of mind-bending distorted reality that tells us we’re in a not-too-distant future. Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Bruce Willis From the moment it was announced that Gordon-Levitt would be playing a younger version of Bruce Willis , we’ve been very curious to see how that might look onscreen. Thanks to this new teaser, we finally get a glimpse of Gordon-Levitt-as-Willis, via a close-up shot of their bright green eyes and a few hints at their similar body movements — before they start trying to kill each other, that is. Gordon-Levitt admitted that he spent three hours in a makeup chair every morning in order to step into Willis, as it were. Emily Blunt in Action Emily Blunt’s appearance in the trailer is almost of the blink-and-you-miss-it variety. We see Blunt wielding a shotgun, possibly in an attempt to off the young version of Gordon-Levitt and in several states of strife. Her scenes are almost a combination of action from the film’s present settings and its flashbacks. Why is she upset? Is she related to Gordon-Levitt and Willis’ character or romantically linked to them? Maybe she is also a Looper? So many questions that need answering! Gunfights Galore This movie is very much a science-fiction thriller and yet, contrary to what a lot of people believe to be true about gun battles in sci-fi movies, there are no laser beams or space guns in sight. The weapons we see in the trailer look like new versions of handguns and shotguns that are powered by regular bullets. And because this is a movie about time-traveling hitmen who off their assignments with guns, we see a lot of gunfight action in this spot, along with some hand-to-hand combat, that only adds to the gritty, futuristic-yet-realistic feel. Moonrise Kingdom Cast Gathers For Frowny ‘Vintage Team Photo’

You’ve seen the trailer . You’ve parsed the poster . Now study in the stern countenances awaiting you in Moonrise Kingdom , Wes Anderson’s Cannes-opening reverie for which a new “vintage team photo” is making the rounds. To my knowledge, this is the first and probably only time we’ll get Anderson’s ensemble — including Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, Frances McDormand, Edward Norton and the young campers of New Penzance Island — in one place before the film hits theaters next month. Except for Tilda Swinton, I guess; “Social Services” just gets a picture frame. And Snoopy R.I.P.? Nooo! Whatever. It’s better Photoshop than this . [Click for bigger; via Focus Features] Follow S.T. Can You Guess the Most-Rented DVD of 2011?

Can you guess the most-rented DVD of 2011? Hint: It wasn’t the most-bought DVD of 2011, but you probably already knew that . Another hint: Despite all odds, it doesn’t star Danny Trejo . Give up? Don’t we all! Per the LAT : The Bruce Willis action-comedy Red was the most rented DVD of 2011 but wasn’t even close to the top of the sales charts. The most rented movies are a mix of films that largely enjoyed solid but not spectacular runs at the box office. They seemed to leave theaters with good word-of-mouth, leading people to sample the films via rental. Among the most bought DVDs, meanwhile, are many of the top-grossing hits of last year. Animated films sold particularly well. Since children often watch their favorite animated movies multiple times, making a purchase was more economical than rental. No. 1 on the list was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 , while other big sellers included Deathly Hallows: Part 2 , Tangled , Transformers: Dark of the Moon and The Help . The only film to make both Top 10 lists: breakout comedy Bridesmaids . So if there’s any doubt that the bulk of midgrade theatrical releases are just commercials for DVDs that studios don’t really want you to rent anyway, and/or that better blockbusters have the potential to influence stronger DVD sales, let it be put to rest.
