Disney Predicts $200 Million Loss on John Carter

Biggest . Bust . Ever : “In light of the theatrical performance of John Carter ($184 million global box office), we expect the film to generate an operating loss of approximately $200 million during our second fiscal quarter ending March 31. As a result, our current expectation is that the Studio segment will have an operating loss of between $80 and $120 million for the second quarter. As we look forward to the second half of the year, we are excited about the upcoming releases of The Avengers and Brave , which we believe have tremendous potential to drive value for the Studio and the rest of the company.” [Disney via Deadline ]

First Look: Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Bruce Willis as a Time-Traveling Assassin in Rian Johnson’s Looper

This fall you’ll see Joseph Gordon-Levitt as you’ve never seen him before: As Bruce Willis . In the sci-fi time-travel action pic Looper , from Brick director Rian Johnson , Gordon-Levitt plays Joe, an assassin who ties up loose ends for the mob by killing targets as they’re sent back in time from the future — until one day his own future self (played by Willis) comes through for extermination. Previewing a teaser for the September release at WonderCon , Johnson and Gordon-Levitt discussed the trickiness of transforming Gordon-Levitt into a young Willis, pulled off with the aid of prosthetics, and why it’s particularly difficult to talk about their time travel thriller. With Willis playing the older version of Gordon-Levitt, the younger actor had to transform in two ways to better resemble his onscreen future self. The first trick: Three hours of prosthetics each day, which lent Gordon-Levitt more of a physical likeness. “We basically had to figure out a way to sell Joe as a young Bruce Willis,” Johnson explained, giving much of the credit Gordon-Levitt’s performance, which he described as “this incredible high wire act of acting, where Joe is doing Bruce but at the same time he’s creating a unique character who has the Bruce voice.” “It’s kind of amazing to watch. It’s his own character that he created but at the same time you see that character and you believe in the movie that could be a younger version of the Bruce you’re seeing onscreen.” Gordon-Levitt adopted Willis’s mannerisms by studying how he delivered lines in previous films, and by observing the old-fashioned way: In the flesh. “I watched all of his movies and took the audio out of his movies and put them on my iPod so I could listen to them over and over again,” he said, “but by far the most productive part of the preparation process was just hanging out, shooting the shit, having dinner, taking about music — getting to know him.” The world of Looper is more grounded in a gritty reality than in a fantasy atmosphere, with the time-travel element serving as a tool rather than the film’s focus — a choice Johnson says was somewhat borne of necessity due to the inherent difficulties of tackling a time-travel story to begin with. “Any time time travel is part of a story it’s kind of this beast,” Johnson said. “From a writing standpoint it’s a problem because time travel never makes sense. Unless you’re Shane Carruth, who I think actually knows how time travel works, the best you can do is this magic trick where you distract the audience narratively from the fact that it actually doesn’t make sense.” Johnson turned to James Cameron’s Terminator as a model on how to use the time-travel element. “For me that was a really fun challenge: How do you have time travel be an element in the movie but convince the audience not to think about it so deeply that they’re ignoring the movie thinking, ‘But wait, this’ – or ‘But wait, that?’ The approach we took is that these guys are assassins who use time travel as part of their job. We’re just going to be with them, and they don’t know how this stuff works – they don’t know the science, they don’t care about grandfather paradoxes and all the complexities of message board comments on the i09 site about how it works and how it doesn’t. They’re showing up every day, a guy is appearing from the future and they’re shooting him – that’s their job.” Nathan Johnson, cousin to the director and composer on both Brick and The Brothers Bloom , came up with an inventive concept for the score to match. “He took this tape recorder out to New Orleans where we were shooting the movie and found all these sounds, sampled them, slowed them down 3000 percent,” explained Rian Johnson, “and basically using all these unconventional sounds built up a score that has the size of an orchestra. It’s this huge action movie score but the sounds that you’re hearing are just foreign to your ear.” All that said, Johnson and Gordon-Levitt found themselves choosing their words wisely talking up Looper . Johnson explained: “A big part of what’s fun about the movie is figuring out what it is, and figuring out what it’s going to be by the end of it.” Looper hits theaters on September 28. Twee-riffic! Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom Will Kick Off Cannes

Get ready for some twee twinkling on the Croisette — Wes Anderson ‘s Moonrise Kingdom is set to open the 2012 Cannes Film Festival! Last year’s opener, Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris , went on to enjoy a rousingly successful theatrical run on its way to a Best Picture nomination; Anderson’s comedy, about a pair of pre-teen lovebirds on the lam in 1960s New England, will open stateside just over a week after its May 16 Cannes debut and marks his return to live-action film after his most recent film, the Oscar-nominated Fantastic Mr. Fox . In a statement announcing the premiere, Cannes head Thierry Frémaux referenced Fellini and Renoir while calling Anderson a ‘ brilliant and inventive filmmaker ‘; not too shabby for a guy who most recently followed in the footsteps of some of cinema’s brightest directors by helming a pair of car commercials for Hyundai ! (Said ads are classic Anderson, though, through and through — can’t quite say the same for this week’s other ad director-for-hire, Darren Aronofsky .) Moonrise Kingdom stars youngsters Jared Gilman as Sam and Kara Hayward as his best gal Suzy, along with Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton, Ed Norton, Frances McDormand, Jason Schwartzman, Bob Balaban, and Harvey Keitel. Bruce Willis Tough Guys’ the Paparazzi of the Day

Bruce Willis is such a pussy….I’m not a violent guy and I am always on the receiving end of people losing their shit…fracturing my face…causing brain damage…shit like that….but Bruce Willis is an ex bouncer…tought guy….who thinks he’s still tough…cuz he was in Die Hard…and has an ego cuz you gotta be hard to fuck Demi in the pre-surgery years…more importantly….you need to be hard to stomach looking at your nasty monster kids…My whole theory is these are some dainty motherfuckers who spend more time getting pedicure’s and crying to their gfs, then being the tough guy enforcers they are marketed as… Either way, paparazzi asks about Demi in Rehab…Bruce says “Git” like the cowboy he is….and threatens to throw dude to the ground….and it’s pretty hysterical watching such a little man break….more importantly…watching the paparazzi photographers…who are even worse in the pussy department than Bruce Wills…get scared by Bruce Willis is also hysterical…

How The Glock Became Hip-Hop’s Favorite Gun [AUDIO]

Read the original:

Hip-hop artists have had a long fascination with guns, in particular the Glock, but where did this fascination come from? In his new book Glock: The Rise of America’s Gun , author Paul M. Barrett not only delves into hip-hop’s embrace of the Glock, he also details how the Glock became America’s gun of choice for criminals and law officers alike. Created in 1982 by an Austrian man named Gaston Glock, Barrett traces how the gun gained fame by appearing in the hands of police officers in Law and Order and other police shows. It was also used by Bruce Willis in the movie Die Hard 2 . Atlanta’s infamous, now shuttered strip club, the Gold Club, also played a large role in marketing the Glock. In terms of rappers, Barrett said the Glock was adopted early on by some of hip-hop’s biggest names like Tupac and Dr. Dre . Tupac was eventually killed with a 40 caliber Glock. Adrianne Palicki Is Ready For A ‘Badass’ 2012

With roles in ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ and ‘Red Dawn,’ the ‘Friday Night Lights’ alum is One to Watch in 2012. By Kevin P. Sullivan Adrianne Palicki in “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” Photo: MGM If 2012 teaches us anything about Adrianne Palicki, it may be that she knows her way around a machine gun. The former “Friday Night Lights” star finds herself pulling the trigger in two high-profile action movies this year, “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” and “Red Dawn.” Starring alongside big names like Bruce Willis, Dwayne Johnson, Chris Hemsworth and fellow Ones to Watch in 2012 honoree Josh Hutcherson in a single year definitely has our attention, but Palicki kicks ass in her own right. We spoke with Palicki about her big 2012 and the difficulties of finding a date — knowing what she does about hand-to-hand combat. MTV : First off, I have to congratulate you on being included in MTV’s Ones to Watch 2012. Adrianne Palicki : Thank you very much. It’s very cool. I’m very flattered. MTV : You have such a huge year coming up. Palicki : Yeah, they keep telling me that. [ Laughs. ] It’s surreal. Part of it is, “Red Dawn” I shot three years ago, so that feels so foreign to know that’s actually going to come out this year. “G.I. Joe,” we literally got off the plane from New Orleans and the trailer was out. I’ve never experienced anything like that. I feel like I’m still working right now. When we were shooting, it was less than a year until it came out. We knew that. It was just shocking. MTV : The fan response to the “G.I. Joe” trailer seemed overwhelmingly positive. Palicki : It was a pleasant surprise, because this is a reboot. It’s scary going into the shoes that have already been worn. We wanted to do something really unique and special. With such an amazing group of talented actors, you don’t want it to fall flat. How many people reached out, it’s unbelievable to hear the comments that they’re so excited, that the trailer is better than the first movie was. Just really cool reactions that you’re going, “OK, hopefully we don’t let you down.” I really don’t think we will. I think it’s going to be a really fun ride for everybody. MTV : It had to be a fun movie to shoot, right? Palicki : Oh my God, it was a blast. Jon Chu, he’s this genius. The thing that’s so special about him is that he might be the biggest G.I. Joe fan on the planet, so that really came in our favor. He’s young and interesting and full of ambition. We really did things that were super exciting and super scary, and I really feel everything’s going to come out really, really well. MTV : What was the scariest thing you had to do on set? Palicki : We did have to scale a wall, but after seeing “Mission: Impossible 4,” I’m like, “Well, I guess it wasn’t that scary.” An 18-foot wall compared to a skyscraper. The fun thing is that we get to do a lot of our own stunts. MTV : Were you a fan of “G.I. Joe” when you were growing up? Palicki : Oh yeah, definitely. I have a big brother, so anything he liked, I liked. He was super big into comic books, so I was super big into comic books. He was super big into G.I. Joe, and I wanted to be Jinx so badly. I don’t know just if it was that she was wearing a red costume or what, but I wanted to be a ninja. MTV : Were you disappointed to be Lady Jaye then? Palicki : Lady Jaye’s a badass. I couldn’t really be disappointed with Lady Jaye. She’s the one chick in the boys club. She can hold her own. She doesn’t get the staff, but she is a weapons specialist. She has that going for her. MTV : What was it like working with two huge action stars, Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis? Palicki : Dwayne is like a teddy bear. I know his fans probably don’t want to hear that. He might be one of the nicest people on the planet, genuinely. Very caring and very giving. Bruce is a kick in the pants. We get along really well, but he definitely came in during the middle of shooting for a week, added some flavor and left. But he was really fun to work with. I really enjoyed him. MTV : How comfortable are you with a machine gun now? Palicki : Between “Red Dawn,” “Wonder Woman” and now “G.I. Joe,” I feel like I could actually go and really harm some people with my hands. I feel like a Navy SEAL. It’s been fun. I mean, I get paid to do this sh–. I get paid to shoot an AK-47 or a .50 cal or punch some dudes in the face or groin or whatever. It’s a really fun job. MTV : What’s it like having “Red Dawn” come out after all this time? Palicki : It’s weird, because I’m so very removed from it. It was such a great experience, and I enjoyed it so much. Honestly, there’s been some disappointment for me because it’s going to be released and then it’s not. It’s going to be released and then it’s not. I’m relieved. I’m really excited it’s coming out, and I’m excited to see it myself. I haven’t seen it in a year, and I’m sure it’s changed quite a bit. MTV : Back then Chris Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson weren’t exactly the huge stars they are today. Palicki : Oh, Josh Hutcherson. I love him so much. It’s crazy. We were babies. It’s going to be so funny to see myself in “G.I. Joe” before playing an 18-year-old in “Red Dawn.” It’s just insane. We’re all just babies. Chris was training to go shoot “Thor” when we were shooting that movie. It’s crazy. It was so long ago. MTV : How does it feel having these two action movies coming out in same year? Palicki : It’s very strange, and it’s like, “OK, I guess I’ll be an action star. Why not?” I will never have a date again, but it’s cool, whatever. Men are going to be afraid of me. It’s really special, and I’m excited. It’s going to be a very busy year for me. MTV : One of your fellow Ones to Watch is … Palicki : Taylor Kitsch . I know that guy! He’s awesome. I miss him. He’s the nicest guy. He’s Canadian, I mean, need I say more? He also has the most ridiculous, disgusting sense of humor than anyone I’ve met. He’s so raunchy, and when it comes out of his mouth, because he’s Canadian and because he’s so nice, it comes out of nowhere. It just makes it that much funnier. MTV : Who’s going to have the bigger year? Palicki : Oh God, I can’t. I think Taylor’s going to have the bigger year. I’m not going to lie. He has a lot coming out this year and all different kinds of movies. I’m really proud of him. He deserves it. He’s worked really hard. I’m excited to see where he goes with his career. The thing is, he’s not just a pretty face. I mean, he has a very pretty face, by the way, but that’s not all he has. What are you waiting for? Your must-see movie needs your support. FIRST LOOK: The Rock And Bruce Willis in “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” [VIDEO]

Read this article:

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson shows us what he’s got cookin’ in next summer’s  G.I. Joe: Retaliation .  Looking to improve on the abysmal 2009 G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, director Jon Chu has upped the ante (and the testosterone) with the addition of the Rock and action-star favorite Bruce Willis as Joe Colton.   Retaliation boasts a new line up of characters on the G.I. Joe team which includes Roadblock (The Rock), Lady Jaye (Adrianne Palicki) and Flint (D.J. Cotrona).  Team Cobra will include master-of-disguise Zartan (Arnold Vosloo), Firefly (Ray Stevenson) and Storm Shadow (Lee Byung-hun). G.I. ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ Trailer: Five Key Scenes

Channing Tatum’s days as Duke might be numbered in Jon Chu’s sequel. By Josh Wigler Bruce Willis in “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” Photo: Paramount Pictures Either Jon Chu and I have a lot in common, or the “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” director was checking in on me during my formative years and caught me spending hours playing with my Joe toys. At least that’s the impression I’m getting from the brand-new “G.I. Joe” trailer , which looks like it was lifted directly from my childhood and projected onto the big screen. (You could have said hi by the way, Jon!) Between fan-favorite character Roadblock (played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson ) ripping enemies to shreds with an automatic heavy gun, Snake Eyes and Jinx repelling from a mountainside cleaving bad-guy ninjas along the way, and a perfectly delivered one-liner from Bruce Willis , it’s safe to say that every square inch of the “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” trailer is filled with win. But in the midst of all that action, there are some hidden details you may have missed. To that end, here are five key scenes from the “G.I. Joe” trailer you’ll want to pay attention to. Warning: Some potential spoilers ahead. Bye-Bye, Duke? Hey, there’s Channing Tatum ! Wait … where’d he go? There are only a handful of Tatum appearances in the trailer, which comes as a bit of a shock, considering his lead role in the last “G.I. Joe” flick. Perhaps he’s being downplayed to show off the Rock and an army of ninjas (totally cool by me), or perhaps his absence hints at a darker fate in store for Duke. Mouse Trap In other folks-who-are-likely-to-die news, there’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance from Joseph Mazzello as Mouse near the top of the trailer: He’s sitting right next to Flint ( D.J. Cotrona ) on the aircraft that’s unknowingly leading the Joes to certain doom. Given that Mouse isn’t a household name in the “Joe” community, as well as the absolute mayhem we see next, chances are very high that the “Jurassic Park” vet’s days are numbered. Cobra Rises Very few will complain about the lack of “Rise of Cobra” carryover in the new “Retaliation” trailer, but if there’s one thing all “Joe” fans can get behind, it’s the return of President Zartan. His position at the top of the U.S. government was easily the most tantalizing cliffhanger in “Rise,” and based on the Cobra banners draped over the side of the White House, “Retaliation” is following through on that potential in a very, very big way. Hail to the Chief Lest you think Zartan is the movie’s big bad, even the President has someone to answer to. Like Mouse, Cobra Commander makes an incredibly brief appearance in the “Retaliation” trailer, sandwiched between Zartan and new baddie Firefly ( Ray Stevenson ) at the one-minute mark. He’s sporting his classic metal face mask, easily the character’s most popular look, and by all appearances, the commander has come a long way from Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s winky goofball performance in “Rise.” Now, if only we knew who was playing him this time around … Kiss Those Lips Goodbye! Read my lips: Snake Eyes’ rubber-masked ninja mouth is gone, gone, gone! Almost as offensive as nipples on the Batsuit, Snake’s inexplicable on-costume mouth was a huge bone of contention for the “Joe” fanbase. Thankfully, we can kiss those lips goodbye and keep them firmly in the past where they belong. Also, even if Snake Eyes still looked mouthy, he slaughters an army of evil ninjas while running along a mountainside. That’s so cool that even rubber lips would be mostly forgivable.
