George Stephanopoulos Defends Ground Zero Mosque: What Better Way to Say Terrorists Haven’t Won?

Good Morning America’s George Stephanopoulos on Wednesday Defended the building of a mosque near Ground Zero as a monument to tolerance. Talking to conservative radio host Laura Ingraham, he proclaimed, ” This is a country founded on the notion of religious freedom. What better way to say they [the terrorists] haven’t won ?” Ingraham decried the plan for being so close to the site of 9/11 terrorist attack: “And I say the terrorists have won with the way this has gone down. 600 feet from where thousands of our fellow Americans were incinerated in the name of political Islam?” This prompted the ABC co-host to chide, “In the name of militant, radical Islam, not in the name of Islam.” Deborah Norville, a former co-anchor of NBC’s Today, also appeared and strenuously disagreed with Stephanopoulos. Pointing out that a Greek Orthodox Church destroyed on 9/11 has had trouble rebuilding, she contrasted, “And, yet, a mosque, with no presence in the area, has been given the green light by getting the landmark status of this building rejected. A lot of people look at that and go, where are our priorities?” This logic seemed to give Stephanopoulos pause. (His father is a Greek Orthodox priest.) He conceded, “That’s a good point. I’m all for getting St. Nicholas up again. No question about it.” A transcript of the August 4 segment, which aired at 8:12am EDT, follows: GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: Time now for our Morning mix, where we tackle the topics everybody is buzzing about. This week, uproar over that decision to build a mosque at Ground Zero. Mommy wars. Should breast feeding be mandatory? One super model thinks so. And why is Sarah Palin is happiest person in Alaska this morning? Levi is out of the picture. Joining me to talk about all this, Fox News contributor, Laura Ingraham. Also, the author of the new, number one New York Times bestseller The Obama Diaries. and Inside Edition anchor Deborah Norville. And let me talk about the decision to build a mosque. The clearance came yesterday, Laura. And this has created such passion here in New York City. LAURA INGRAHAM: There’s a disconnect, George, between the elites and the way they think about this. And, I think, most New Yorkers and most of the country. I know Michael Bloomberg was out there saying, our values need to be properly represented to the world. And if this mosque isn’t built, what is that going to say? The terrorists have won. And I say the terrorists have won with the way this has gone down. 600 feet from where thousands of our fellow Americans were incinerated in the name of political Islam? And we’re- and we’re supposed to be- we’re supposed to be considered intolerant if we’re not cheering this? STEPHANOPOULOS: But, what- But, what- In the name of militant, radical Islam, not in the name of Islam. And what better- This is a country founded on the notion of religious freedom. What better way to say they haven’t won? INGRAHAM: We don’t have to prove anything to anyone, I don’t think. DEBORAH NORVILLE: Here’s the point. There is a point, George. There’s a church that was buried when the second tower came down. STEPHANOPOULOS: St. Nicholas Church. A Greek Orthodox church. NORVILLE: St. Nicholas church. A Greek Orthodox church. That church has run into every conceivable impediment. And in nine years that this church, this place of worship has not been able to get the port authority and other agencies to get them the green light to rebuild. And, yet, a mosque, with no presence in the area, has been given the green light by getting the landmark status of this building rejected, a lot of people look at that and go, where are our priorities? STEPHANOPOULOS: [Pauses] That’s a good point. I’m all for getting St. Nicholas up again. No question about it. INGRAHAM: Yeah! Come on, Greek orthodox . But, it’s a finger in the eye, I think, of New York. New York is coming back. You know, we hope. And it’s vibrant, economically. A lot of stuff happening downtown. This is sacred ground. Okay? And I don’t think people across the country are protesting. STEPHANOPOULOS: Ground Zero is sacred ground. The actual Ground Zero. INGRAHAM: This is 600 feet. I think the legitimate question to ask, George, is why? Why do they want to build a $100 million, 15-story mosque, Islamic center? Why? Why there? And no one’s protesting it around the country, building mosques. I don’t think- I don’t think there are big sit ins at mosques. So, I don’t think we’re intolerant. NORVILLE: And here’s another point: There’s no funding for this. This is an idea. But the funding for this, this mosque, this Islamic center, is not in place. They’re going to be going to charities and other agencies. INGRAHAM: Saudi Arabia. NORVILLE: And the people trying to put this up there. Saying, we’re going to be strict about who is allowed to contribute. But, we’ve seen how agencies and organizations that have contributed to causes, that often times are in support of Muslim issues, sometimes later are found to have terrorist connections. STEPHANOPOULOS: And that means this conversation is not going away for a very long time.

Friggebod Fun: MiniHouse From Add-A-Room

Image via Onen So much of what we build is a response to regulation; from garden sheds to modular homes, it is the rules that define the forms. Swedish Housing Minister, Birgit Friggebo exempted buildings under 150 square feet from the building codes; Her name will live forever in the explosion of lovely little cabins that bear the name Friggebod. The latest we have seen is the Minihouse 1 from Add-a-Room , designed by Lars Frank Neilsen of OneN. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

CBS Shoehorns Palin ‘Refudiate’ Gaffe Into Story About NYC Mosque

On Tuesday’s CBS Evening News, correspondent Jeff Glor managed to squeeze criticism of a gaffe made by Sarah Palin into a story on a controversial plan to build a mosque just blocks from Ground Zero in New York City: “…on Twitter she called on peaceful Muslims to ‘refudiate’ the plan….Liberal bloggers pounced on the made-up word and Palin retracted her tweet.” While describing the opposing sides in the debate, Glor noted how Palin “upped an already raucous debate” with her comments on Twitter. After showing her tweet on screen, Glor played a clip of her using the word “refudiate” during a television appearance. He noted her response to criticism: “‘Shakespeare liked to coin new words, too.'” Glor then clumsily shifted back to the topic at hand: “Grammatical debates aside, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has come out firmly in support of the plan.” Here is a full transcript of Glor’s July 20 report: 6:45PM KATIE COURIC: There’s a heated debate going on here in New York over a plan to build a mosque and Muslim community center near the World Trade Center site. And as national correspondent Jeff Glor reports, just about everyone is weighing in. UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: I speak before you as a concerned citizen of New York. JEFF GLOR: Opponents call it a mosque in the worst possible place. UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: This building, in particular, should be turned into a museum. GLOR: Supporters call it a cultural center in the best spot to encourage understanding. DARISA DARWISH [MOSQUE ADVOCATE]: If a mosque were built, then you guys would know what Islam was about. GLOR: At issue: This building in lower Manhattan, the proposed site of a 13-story community center and Islamic prayer space. UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: This is the Muslim community’s effort to rebuild lower Manhattan. GLOR: The controversy? It’s only two blocks from Ground Zero. This week, Sarah Palin upped an already raucous debate when on Twitter she called on peaceful Muslims to ‘refudiate’ the plan, calling it ‘a stab in the heart for America.’ SARAH PALIN: They have power in their words. They could refudiate what it is that this group is saying. GLOR: Liberal bloggers pounced on the made-up word and Palin retracted her tweet but not her sentiment, saying ‘Shakespeare liked to coin new words, too.’ Grammatical debates aside, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has come out firmly in support of the plan. MICHAEL BLOOMBERG: Everything the United States stands for and New York stands for is tolerance and openness. What is it you’re hope that this center will do?              UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: My hope is that this center will attract a lot of people who don’t know about Islam. GLOR: Do you feel like the debate is shifting at all? TIM BROWN: Yeah. It’s on a national stage now. GLOR: But Tim Brown, a former New York City firefighter who lost 93 colleagues on September 11, calls the proposal a slap in the face. Your message today to the developers behind this? BROWN: Stop it. Stop hurting the families. Everyday there’s some stories in the newspaper, they’re hurting the families again. They don’t deserve it. These American families have paid too much. GLOR: Brown and others, including New York gubernatorial candidate Rick Lazio, are calling for an investigation into the financing behind the $4.8 million building purchase. Their concerns spurred in part by comments the center’s imam made to ’60 Minutes’ in 2001, just weeks after the 9/11 attacks. IMAM FEISAL [ABDUL RAUF, PARK ST. PROJECT DEVELOPER]: I wouldn’t say that the United States deserved what happened. But the United States’ policies were an accessory to the crime that happened. UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: Because that is the point- GLOR: Citing anti-Americanism, opponents are pushing to have the building declared a landmark, which would make it far more difficult for any Muslim center construction to begin. Jeff Glor, CBS News, New York.

Ask Pablo: Why Should I Switch My House Over To All-Electric?

A Heat Exchanger. Image Source: Shandchem Dear Pablo: We had a home energy audit and the auditor suggested that we switch our space and water heating from natural gas to electric to become more sustainable. Why is this? The changes suggested by your building auditor can indeed be part of a comprehensive strategy to make your home “carbon neutral.” Since the majority of utility-supplied electricity comes from fossil fuel sources and is by no means “carbon neutral” … Read the full story on TreeHugger

LeBron James Launches Twitter Feed

Basketball star accumulates 200,000 followers in 24 hours as he decides which NBA team to sign with next. By Kyle Anderson LeBron James Photo: Elsa/Getty Images For the past week, the country has been eagerly anticipating the answer to a pressing question. No, not “How will the Gulf of Mexico recover from this oil spill?” Rather, it is “Where will LeBron James play basketball next?” The dynamic and multitalented James, who is friends with Jay-Z and who last year starred in a documentary about his high school hoops team , became a free agent on July 1 and has been fielding offers from a number of NBA teams for his services. While he searches for a new contract (and possibly a new city), he recently acquired something he has never had before: his own verified Twitter account. James made his Twitter debut on Tuesday, identifying himself as the “King of Akron” in his bio description. “Hello World, the Real King James is in the Building ‘Finally,’ ” he wrote in his first (and so far only) tweet. “My Brother @oneandonlycp3 gas’d me up to jump on board so I’m here. Haaaa.” Clearly there was demand for James’ thoughts on the service, as he has accumulated nearly 216,000 followers in less than 24 hours. James was referring to fellow basketball star (and free agent) Chris Paul, who has been a star for the New Orleans Hornets and is also in search of a new home. Rumors have swirled that Paul and James would be signed together as a package deal, though they are both playing their decisions close to the vest. “Couldn’t convince him to tell me which team he’s goin to but convinced him to join twitter lol…my brother from another mother,” Paul tweeted . On Tuesday night, James said he would announce his decision during a special ESPN telecast on Thursday at 9 p.m. ET. Oddsmakers seem to believe he is headed to the Chicago Bulls, but the Cleveland Cavaliers (his team for the past six seasons), Miami Heat, New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers have all made pitches to him. Where do you think LeBron James will end up? Let us know in the comments! Related Photos If LeBron James Played On A Movie Team

Jay-Z, Eminem Perform On Roof Of ‘Late Show With David Letterman’ Building

Show was relocated after Jay-Z’s plan to play on the famous marquee of New York’s Ed Sullivan Theater was scrapped. By Kyle Anderson Eminem and Jay-Z perform on the rooftop of the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York on Monday Photo: CBS If there’s one thing that is true in the music world, it’s that you should never bet against Jay-Z . Last week, the veteran rapper had plans to perform a surprise live set on the marquee of New York’s Ed Sullivan Theater, the home of the “Late Show With David Letterman.” But when word leaked of the surprise show, the whole plan was iced over concerns about crowd safety and logistics. On Monday, Jay performed anyway . Flanked by Eminem (who played a surprise show of his own later at Bowery Ballroom ), Jigga took to the roof of the building housing the Ed Sullivan Theater and ripped off a performance for about 100 hard-core fans who earned the right to see the pair live by winning contests on Facebook and Twitter, according to the New York Post. The pair did not need a permit for the show because the roof of the building is technically private property. Though some of the show was audible to the surrounding neighborhood, the performance was invisible to anybody walking by. The duo’s performance will air on this Friday’s episode of the “Late Show With David Letterman” and will promote the pair of upcoming shows the rappers will co-headline at the end of the summer. There will be one show in each of Jay-Z’s and Eminem’s hometowns, New York and Detroit . The pair will play Comerica Park in Detroit (home of the Detroit Tigers) on September 2 and then appear at Yankee Stadium on September 13. Busta Rhymes Calls DJ Khaled’s Summer Jam Set ‘A Special Moment’

‘When we did that ‘All I Do Is Win’ remix, fire and brimstone!’ he tells MTV News backstage. By Shaheem Reid Busta Rhymes Photo: MTV News EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey — On Sunday night, after Busta Rhymes had ripped the stage with DJ Khaled and a host of others at Hot 97’s Summer Jam concert , the rap legend joked backstage with Trey Songz and gave his full play-by-play of what happened. ” ‘Stop the Party’ stopped the party this evening,” Busta said with an extra-raspy voice backstage at the New Meadowlands Stadium. “My voice is a little gone. They did warn the building that there was a tornado watch today. You know why they did that. The tornado came through! Busta came through and did what was necessary. With all due respect to everything else in the building, what was necessary had to get done. ‘Stop the Party’ flatlined the entire brand-new Giants Stadium. It’s only appropriate. Trey Songz, flatline! He came through and he bodied the building. Extremely appropriate.” Busta said the part of the show he was involved with was historic. “The Khaled set, I think a special moment we should acknowledge,” he said. “Despite the fact that the set in its entirety was incredible, I think we were very happy to see the homie Cam’ron. Flatline! Cam’ron, you bodied the building. The young homie Vado, great first look. You bodied the building. Mr. Ros
