Current San Francisco Law Makes Growing Medical Marijuana Easier Than Food Crops But it May Be Soon to Change

photo: Sara Novak If you were to choose a city on the map known for the best food in the U.S., especially farm-to-fork dining, San Francisco would likely make your list. But in a city where dining on local eats is so sacred, why has the business of urban farming been so difficult for the past 50 years? Small time farmers in the city have been forced to jump t… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Current TV ==> CrowdSourced TV

Gore is creating a new TV station with the original vision of Current TV. Nobody told us. Refer to the date on the article as being April 2010 http://www.mediapost.com/publications/?fa=Articles.showArticle&art_aid=12703… Al Gore Wants To Democratize Television, Leaks 'Crowdsourced TV' by Joe Mandese, Wednesday, April 28, 2010 ======================================================= What if you could flip the mass media power of the TV industry funnel, making your viewers your producers, and then using communities to source, distribute and promote professionally curated content? Well, then you might have something that looked a little bit like user-generated video portal YouTube combined with a traditional television network. That appears to be what Current Media plans to introduce soon, Chairman Al Gore hinted at during the closing keynote Tuesday at MEDIA magazine's Outfront Conference in New York. “Soon we will unveil a new, related concept that we call Crowdsourced TV,” Gore disclosed during a speech that focused largely on the concept of a “sustainable advertising” marketplace, and what advertisers, agencies and the media could to do to help make it a reality. The industry needs to, Gore asserted, because, “the consumer is way ahead of us on this.” Gore was alluding to the fact that consumers have already embraced social media platforms and new, inexpensive, professional quality technologies that have made them as much a part of the conversation as any marketer or media conglomerate, and that the best option for the media industry is to embrace it. “I want to keep the anticipation, but we're very excited about it,” Gore said about Crowdsourced TV. While he declined to elaborate, he implied that it would be a new iteration of what Current Media already does with its online community and its cable and satellite delivered television network, Current TV, which reaches 60 million U.S. households, and also operates in a number of major markets around the world. In fact, Gore said he was leaving the Outfront conference to travel to Johannesburg, where he was going to open a Current TV network in South Africa today. Gore, a former Vice President of the United States, said he and his partner Joel Hyatt originally launched Current to “democratize” the business of media, giving consumers more of a say, and direct involvement, in the creation and distribution of content. And in some ways, Current was ahead of its time, paving the way for a user-generated revolution that was ultimately seized by YouTube, and fueled by legions of social network platforms that promote and distribute it. Gore, who is a senior advisor to YouTube owner Google, did not imply whether it might play a role in Crowdsourced TV, and he did not give a specific time frame for unveiling details of the plans. But Mark Rosenthal, the savvy, long-time MTV Networks president who was brought in last year as CEO of Current Media, has quietly been retooling the network and its Web site to leverage the best of both its fervent user/creator base, as well as his personal ties to Hollywood and professional TV and film producers. During his speech, Gore implied that the next iteration of Current TV would expand on its users' ability to create information and entertainment content, as well as advertising on behalf of marketers and brands. Current was one of the first networks to utilize consumer-generated advertising campaigns on behalf of marketers, and showed campaigns that were recently developed by its users to help introduce a new, biodegradable package design for Frito-Lay's Sun Chips. “What if we let them create content and the advertising,” Gore told a roomful of top advertisers, agency and TV industry executives attending the Outfront conference. “We're pretty excited about this. added by: tverdell

Olbermann: Christine O’Donnell ‘Lump of Dumb & Judgmental,’ Tea Partiers Pushing ‘Virulent, Uneducated Hatred’

On Friday’s Countdown show on MSNBC, during the show’s regular “Worst Person in the World” segment, host Keith Olbermann referred to Delaware Republican Senate nominee Christine O’Donnell as a “lump of dumb and judgmental” as he introduced his slam of Republican strategist Jack Burkman and a clip of him being criticized by former New York Republican Senator Al D’Amato for comments Burkman made about African immigrants on the Fox Business Channel. As he attacked Burkman, the MSNBC host smeared Tea Party activists generally as promoting “nonsensical, virulent, uneducated hatred.” Olbermann: “For the second time in three days, a hardline GOP stalwart managed to get fed up with the nonsensical, virulent, uneducated hatred pushed by one of these flip Tea Party types, and he called BS on it. The first was Karl Rove wigging out over the lump of dumb and judgmental that is Christine O’Donnell.” Below is a transcript of the relevant portion of the Friday, September 17, Countdown show on MSNBC: KEITH OLBERMANN: And our winner, Jack Burkman, a self-described Republican political strategist. This is less about him than it is about what he precipitated on Fixed News. For the second time in three days, a hardline GOP stalwart managed to get fed up with the nonsensical, virulent, uneducated hatred pushed by one of these flip Tea Party types, and he called BS on it. The first was Karl Rove wigging out over the lump of dumb and judgmental that is Christine O’Donnell. But now, it’s former New York Republican Senator Al D’Amato, no shrinking violet he, only he literally called BS on this Burkman. JACK BURKMAN, REPUBLICAN STRATEGIST, ON FBN, CLIP #1: Most of these guys working in the post office should be driving cabs, and I think we should stop importing labor from Nigeria and Ethiopia. That’s about the skill level. BURKMAN CLIP #2: That is why I allege they should be bumped down to driving cabs and we should stop importing labor to drive cabs. FORMER SENATOR AL D’AMATO (R-NY): You are a nasty racist when you bring in the race- BURKMAN: That’s crazy. D’AMATO CLIP #1: Well, I’m going to just make my observation. I have a right to do it. You brought in the fact there’s a bunch of Nigerians. D’AMATO CLIP #2: Let me just tell you, that’s a bunch of bull [BLEEP]. And you should be ashamed of yourself and have your mouth washed out. What the hell are you talking about? It’s one thing to say that they’re out of control – wait a minute, you shut up! I listened to your racist bull [BLEEP]. It’s one thing to say that they’re hiring people who are unskilled, that you can save money, that you can run it better, that it is inefficient, ineffective, and I agree to all of those things. But for you to bring in this bull [BLEEP] about, oh, a bunch of Nigerians, etc., that’s out of line. OLBERMANN: When Alfonse D’Amato, who once filibustered a bill killing off jobs in his state by singing the lyrics to South of the Border Down Mexico Way, when he is the voice of reason and introspection in the Republican party, when Al D’Amato is calling out the BS and the racists, all I can say is he’s right.

Nicki Minaj Wants To Bridge ‘Gap’ Between Gay Fans And Hip-Hop

Talking up her gay alter ego, Roman Zolanski, in Out, MC says Lil Wayne tour could be enlightening for the duo’s fanbases. By Kelley L. Carter Nicki Minaj on cover of Out Magazine Photo: Out.com Nicki Minaj just might be the one to bridge the gap. The 25-year-old female MC hasn’t even released her debut album, Pink Friday, yet, but already her quirky hooks and outrageous fashion have made her one to watch in the gay community. Minaj has a bevy of gay fans, and she’s hoping that she’ll be the one to spearhead a movement to eradicate homophobia in hip-hop. She talks up her gay fans, her bi-curious lyrics and her embrace of her female following in the latest issue of Out magazine, hitting shelves next week. “I started making it my business to say things that would empower women, like, ‘Where my bad bitches at?’ to let them know, ‘I’m here for you,’ ” Minaj says of her female followers. “Then, when I started going to the shows and it was nothing but girls, it was like, ‘Did I go too far with embracing my girls?’ Because now they want to kiss and hug me.” Minaj, whose many aliases include the Harajuku Barbie, said the really haters came out when she embraced that particular image, which surprised her. At MTV Video Music Awards pre-show on Sunday, Minaj performed in a pink-and-purple spacesuit and a cotton-candy-colored wig. She appeared as a Barbie landing from outer space, popping and locking with robotic moves. “It’s interesting that people have more negative things to say about me saying, ‘I’m Barbie,’ than me saying, ‘I’m a bad bitch,’ ” she told the magazine. “Once I figure something is irritating people, I’m going to do it more because I like to get on your nerves until you realize how f—ing stupid you are.” Instead, Minaj said, she’d rather focus on what a homophobia-free rap world might look like, hinting at a tour with her mentor, Lil Wayne. “Normally, Wayne probably wouldn’t have gay guys coming to see his shows much, but they’re definitely a big part of my movement, and I hope they’d still come out and see me,” she said. “I think that will be really, really interesting, just to start bridging that gap. We’ll see.” What do you think of Nicki’s relationship with her gay fans? Share your thoughts in the comments. 50th Anniversary This Weekend of the Seminal ‘Sharon Statement’

Before this weekend ends, I thought it worth a reminder that this weekend marks the 50th anniversary of a key milestone in the creation of the modern conservative political movement – the “Sharon Statement.” On Friday, the Fund for American Studies and the Young America’s Foundation sponsored a “ Tribute Sharon: Celebrating 50 Years of Advancing Liberty ” daytime conference followed by a dinner commemorating the 1960 founding of the Young Americans for Freedom . C-SPAN carried the afternoon speakers live from DC’s Mayflower hotel. (The image here is from a photo I took of a screen during the dinner.) For the American Spectator online, Quin Hillyer, one of the speakers, wrote an informative piece on what he described as “the single best compendium of American conservative movement beliefs” and its adoption at a gathering of about 90 college students and a few others at William F. Buckley Jr.’s home in Sharon, Connecticut. In a piece in Friday’s Investor’s Business Daily, “ The Magnificent Legacy of the YAF ,” K.E. Grubbs Jr. recalled “M. Stanton Evans was charged with drafting a statement of principles” and observed: “The Sharon Statement would last as the late 20th century’s single most elegant distillation of conservative principles.” A new book, by Wayne Thorburn, provides a history of the Young Americans for Freedom and a look at its impact and the influence of those who were once members, ‘A Generation Awakes: Young Americans for Freedom and the Creation of the Conservative Movement.’ ( Amazon’s page ) Dinner attendees got a free copy and I discovered that I earned a sentence (on page 493, yes, it’s a long book). (C-SPAN’s video camera caught me a few times in the audience and in this jpg you can see me, from the back, talking to a conservative media figure with whom you may be familiar: Scripps-Howard nationally-syndicated columnist Deroy Murdock .) Sharon Statement “Adopted in Conference, at Sharon, Connecticut, in conference September 10 – 13, 1960.” IN THIS TIME of moral and political crises, it is the responsibility of the youth of America to affirm certain eternal truths. WE, as young conservatives believe: THAT foremost among the transcendent values is the individual’s use of his God-given free will, whence derives his right to be free from the restrictions of arbitrary force; THAT liberty is indivisible, and that political freedom cannot long exist without economic freedom; THAT the purpose of government is to protect those freedoms through the preservation of internal order, the provision of national defense, and the administration of justice; THAT when government ventures beyond these rightful functions, it accumulates power, which tends to diminish order and liberty; THAT the Constitution of the United States is the best arrangement yet devised for empowering government to fulfill its proper role, while restraining it from the concentration and abuse of power; THAT the genius of the Constitution – the division of powers – is summed up in the clause that reserves primacy to the several states, or to the people in those spheres not specifically delegated to the Federal government; THAT the market economy, allocating resources by the free play of supply and demand, is the single economic system compatible with the requirements of personal freedom and constitutional government, and that it is at the same time the most productive supplier of human needs; THAT when government interferes with the work of the market economy, it tends to reduce the moral and physical strength of the nation, that when it takes from one to bestow on another, it diminishes the incentive of the first, the integrity of the second, and the moral autonomy of both; THAT we will be free only so long as the national sovereignty of the United States is secure; that history shows periods of freedom are rare, and can exist only when free citizens concertedly defend their rights against all enemies… THAT the forces of international Communism are, at present, the greatest single threat to these liberties; THAT the United States should stress victory over, rather than coexistence with this menace; and THAT American foreign policy must be judged by this criterion: does it serve the just interests of the United States?

Amanda Bynes’ Twitter Account Deleted

The actress’ social-networking account, on which she once tweeted her retirement, has been canceled. By Mawuse Ziegbe Amanda Bynes Photo: Michael Buckner/ Getty Images Amanda Bynes’ on-and-off relationship with Twitter appears to have reached a low point. The Twitter account @chicky, which the actress famously used to overshare and rant about her personal and professional life, has been deleted. Bynes, who has sent out childhood pics and declared her very specific taste in men on her Twitter page, famously tweeted her retirement from Hollywood in June . “I don’t love acting anymore, so I’ve stopped doing it,” the starlet wrote at the time. “I know 24 is a young age to retire but you heard it here first I’ve #retired.” Bynes’ announcement came as a shock to her rep, who was blindsided by the news after speaking to her client days earlier and noting she “sounded great.” However, the actress had a change of heart and took to her Twitter page about a month later to reveal she was back on the scene, writing, “I’ve unretired.” This latest move could be related to a desire Bynes’ once expressed about keeping a safe distance from the sometimes harsh glare of the spotlight. “I don’t want to have my face on everything. I just don’t want to be some young brat who is everywhere,” a then-18-year-old Bynes told MTV News in 2005. “It sickens me.” The young actress also copped to not always being on the same page as her Hollywood peers. “I don’t really relate to that many people who are my age, especially in this business.” Fans may not be getting updates about her fluctuating retirement status anymore, but moviegoers will be able to catch Bynes in the upcoming flick “Easy A.” The actress plays a judgmental teen out to ruin the life of a faux good-time girl in the high school comedy, which hits theaters September 17. Rich Cronin’s Former LFO Bandmates Continue Their Music Careers

Brad Fischetti and Devin Lima have both stayed in the business since band split up in 2002. By Gil Kaufman LFO Photo: Arista After his band’s spotlight faded, LFO singer Rich Cronin, who passed away Wednesday , spent his time writing songs for other singers and appearing on VH1’s 2007 reality show “Mission: Man Band,” in which he tried to revive his career alongside some other boy band veterans. But what became of Cronin’s fellow Lyte Funky Ones? A day after Cronin died at the age of 35, former LFO member Brad Fischetti spoke to spoke to Entertainment Weekly . “He was one of the funniest people on the planet,” said Fischetti, who was hoping to mount a tour with Cronin and third member Devin Lima later this year as a follow-up to a successful set of reunion shows in 2009. “Nobody could tell a story like Rich. He used to say, ‘Never let a few facts get in the way of a good story.’ ” Fischetti recalled the day in 2005 when he found out Cronin had leukemia, and how the “Summer Girls” singer/songwriter thought he’d never be able to perform again. “None of us thought we’d ever be on the stage again as LFO,” said Fischetti. “He fought hard, man. He beat leukemia twice. And beat a stroke. He was a fighter.” Fischetti has kept a low profile since LFO split up in 2002, preferring to remain behind the scenes and nurture new talent through his label 111 Records . He did record a solo album, Sari , in 2007; at the time he described its sound as a mix of Coldplay, David Bowie, Pink Floyd and Radiohead. 111 has released albums by former LFO bassist Dan Walters, Kiernan McMullan, the Spill Canvas, Canon, Inkwell, the Windupdeads and Rookie of the Year. Fischetti said the reunion tour last summer reminded him of the special bond the trio had during their late-’90s peak. Cronin was weakened by chemotherapy, a stem-cell transplant and a stroke that left him with such severe leg pain that Fischetti and Lima had to help the singer get dressed before shows and carry him on stage. But the tour was still a highlight. “He was so happy,” Fischetti said. “We really became soul mates. Devin and I both realized how much we loved him, despite the differences we had in the past. In New York City at the Highline Ballroom, he thanked the crowd at the end of the show. I’ll always have that voice in my mind, because it was such a sincere thank you. Really, that’s the memory that’s sticking out in my brain.” Lima released his first solo track in 2006, a cover of the Sly & the Family Stone song “If You Want Me To Stay” for the tribute album Different Strokes by Different Folks . Though it caused some head-scratching at the time, it led to him performing in a tribute to Stone on the 2006 Grammy Awards alongside Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Maroon 5, Joss Stone, John Legend and will.i.am. Lima released Mozart Popart , his first album with his band Cadbury Diesel, in 2008. The disc helped push Lima past the bubblegum tunes of his past, thanks to the rock and roll feel of songs like “Hangin’ With You” and the soulful R&B tune “Me Veda.” Fischetti and Lima are currently collaborating on a new hip-hop project called The Xiles . They released a Christmas EP last year and revealed in December that they’d already begun recording their debut album, American Genie: Volume 1 . Related Artists LFO (Lyte Funky Ones)

CBS’s Smith Pressures GOP to Sign On to ‘Obama’s New Deal’

On Tuesday’s CBS Early Show, co-host Harry Smith touted President Obama’s economic proposals and portrayed Republicans as obstructionist: “Obama’s new plan. The President proposes to spend $50 billion on roads, airports, and railways and offers businesses a $200 billion tax cut. But the GOP says not so fast.” Later, Smith introduced a report by senior White House correspondent Bill Plante: “With unemployment at 9.6% and the midterm elections just two months away, President Obama is out and about this week promoting new ideas to get the economy moving again.” Plante proclaimed: “Pumped up in full campaign mode before a crowd of union members in Milwaukee, Mr. Obama celebrated his administration’s accomplishments and announced a new project to repair the nation’s infrastructure.” A headline on screen read: “Obama’s New Deal; Announces $50 billion Infrastructure Plan.” Following Plante’s report, Smith spoke with CBS economics and business correspondent Rebecca Jarvis and political analyst John Dickerson about the President’s plans. As Jarvis promoted the idea that more spending would create jobs, Smith asked Dickerson about Republican opposition: “…almost anything that the White House talks about, say over the last couple months or so, has met – had been met with a raspberry, I suppose we should assume this will be met with the same kind of reaction?” Dickerson had earlier used the “raspberry” image to dismiss GOP criticism as pure politics: “Well, the resounding sound was a huge raspberry from all Republican corners to the President’s proposal. You know, they – it’s almost as if these press releases are pre-written.” In reply to Smith, Dickerson suggested a strategy for Obama: “So then does the President have an issue, can he take it on the stump and say, ‘look, I’m even trying to give Republicans things that they want, that they’ve said they’ve wanted, they’re still saying no,’ and that’s going to be his message for the next two months.” Smith followed up: “Is there any chance any of this stuff the White House is talking about is going to get any support from Republicans?” Dickerson remarked: “No….in the end, the President’s going to have to try to rally his troops around the idea that the Republicans are really trying to block anything that’s sensible.” On Sunday’s Face the Nation , Smith filled in for host Bob Schieffer and asked a panel of liberal economists: “was the stimulus big enough?” He also pushed for a “second stimulus,” questioned extending the Bush tax cuts, and proposed the creation of “something like a new WPA” to create jobs. Here is a full transcript of the September 7 segment: 7:00AM TEASE HARRY SMITH: Obama’s new plan. The President proposes to spend $50 billion on roads, airports, and railways and offers businesses a $200 billion tax cut. But the GOP says not so fast. 7:06AM SEGMENT SMITH: Now to the economy and politics. With unemployment at 9.6% and the midterm elections just two months away, President Obama is out and about this week promoting new ideas to get the economy moving again. CBS News senior White House correspondent Bill Plante has the latest on that. Bill, good morning. BILL PLANTE: Good morning, Harry. The stalled economy has fueled voter discontent and Democrats fears of losing control of Congress. So the President will be on the campaign trail for much of the next two months trying to turn things around. [ON-SCREEN HEADLINE: Obama’s New Deal; Announces $50 billion Infrastructure Plan] BARACK OBAMA: I am going to keep fighting every single day, every single hour, every single minute, to turn this economy around and put people back to work and renew the American dream. Not just for your family, not just for all our families, but for future generations. PLANTE: Pumped up in full campaign mode before a crowd of union members in Milwaukee, Mr. Obama celebrated his administration’s accomplishments and announced a new project to repair the nation’s infrastructure. The proposal would rebuild 150,000 miles of roads, construct 4,000 miles of rail, and reconstruct 150 miles of runway as well as modernizing the air traffic control system. Administration officials insist this isn’t another stimulus, but the President says it will be a big boost to the economy. OBAMA: This will not only create jobs immediately, it’s also going to make our economy hum over the long haul. PLANTE: House Minority Leader John Boehner shot back in a statement, saying ‘we don’t need more government stimulus spending. We need to end Washington Democrats’ out-of-control spending spree, stop their tax hikes, and create jobs.’ Administration officials propose to pay for the infrastructure rebuilding by eliminating some tax breaks for oil and gas production. And the President will soon propose another tax break for small business. He wants to eliminate taxes on capital investment for the coming year until the end of 2011. Harry. SMITH: Alright, Bill Plante at the White House this morning, thank you. Here now to talk – take a closer look at the President’s plans are CBS News business and economics correspondent Rebecca Jarvis. And in Washington, CBS News political analyst John Dickerson. Good morning to you both. REBECCA JARVIS: Good morning. SMITH: Rebecca, let’s start with you, let’s go through these two plans. The $50 billion, sort of, stimulus junior, as it were, to all of this infrastructure work. JARVIS: Infrastructure- SMITH: This is supposed to be kind of a seed, really, for a much larger idea of addressing infrastructure needs across the country. JARVIS: Absolutely, and well we’ve had these infrastructure needs, obviously, in the very first stimulus, which was about $800 billion, some of the stimulus needs were supposed to be addressed. And if you look at those numbers, that original stimulus dollars, that original 800 billion or so stimulus dollars, that created – according to the Congressional Budget Office, which is a nonpartisan group – that created 1.4 to 3.3 million jobs. So if you think about this infrastructure plan which is $50 billion – that’s the proposal – that, if it’s an apples to apples comparison, it’s a 1/16 of the size of the original plan, could create about 88,000 to 206,000 jobs in a year. SMITH: That’s not a lot of jobs, although it is being welcomed, politically, in some corners and being shunned by – in other quarters. Let’s get John Dickerson on board here to just talk a little bit about the reaction to this. What was the resounding sound, especially from Republicans? JOHN DICKERSON: Well, the resounding sound was a huge raspberry from all Republican corners to the President’s proposal. You know, they – it’s almost as if these press releases are pre-written. They see this as a last-minute desperate attempt by the President. They say more big government spending going to balloon the deficit, this was right into their existing playbook. SMITH: Alright, and let’s talk about this two – this other- DICKERSON: The $200 billion. SMITH: Exactly. Which is a whole – kind of putting a different template on the way businesses sort of write down their own investment in their business. JARVIS: Yeah, as Bill Plante mentioned, it’s an original for two years businesses won’t have to wait to write down their investments in new things. Instead, they’ll get to take off their books, they’ll get to take the deductions in taxes. It’s a $200 billion plan. And some economists estimate it will help grow business investment by 5% to 10%, which could be a boost to some new businesses, as well as new jobs. SMITH: Alright. And John Dickerson, we haven’t heard so much reaction to that yet, but sort of overall, almost anything that the White House talks about, say over the last couple months or so, has met – had been met with a raspberry, I suppose we should assume this will be met with the same kind of reaction? DICKERSON: It will be. And the problem is the President’s got to get these things through Congress and particularly in the Senate, that requires Republican votes and his – the President’s allies in the Senate say that just isn’t going to happen. So then does the President have an issue, can he take it on the stump and say, ‘look, I’m even trying to give Republicans things that they want, that they’ve said they’ve wanted, they’re still saying no,’ and that’s going to be his message for the next two months. SMITH: Because that really ends up being the question. Is there any chance any of this stuff the White House is talking about is going to get any support from Republicans? DICKERSON: No. And though there may an tiny bit of support for this $30 billion small business bill, because small business is something everybody loves. But in the end, the President’s going to have to try to rally his troops around the idea that the Republicans are really trying to block anything that’s sensible. SMITH: Yeah, okay. And finally, last but not least, all through this then, the Bush tax cuts has become this sort of mantra of sorts that the Republicans say, ‘do not touch this. Do not touch this.’ What’s the news on that today? JARVIS: Well, this $200 billion tax credit for businesses throughout the country, some are viewing it as a potential alternative to the Bush tax cuts for the upper earning income earners. SMITH: Alright, thanks very much, Rebecca Jarivs, John Dickerson. Thank you very much for joining us and your insights this morning.

Carmen Electra Needs More Attention

I don’t think that Carmen Electra gets enough attention anymore, she needs a TV show or a porn or something. She’s still hot and has some of the best fake boobs in the business, it would be a shame to keep those things hidden on the sidelines, she needs to get back in the game. Maybe a reality show about her getting a job as a live in half naked cleaning lady/personal assistant/dancer for a single celebrity blogger. I only have one bedroom, but we can work something out. more pictures of Carmen Electra here
