Consequence Reveals How Asher Roth Ended Up On ‘Childish Games’

The Queens rapper almost didn’t go to the show where he met Roth. By Steven Roberts Asher Roth and Consequence in the music video for “Childish Games” Photo: Motown The video for Consequence’s “Childish Games,” first featured on his mixtape Movies on Demand, recently debuted on MTV, but the collaboration between the Queens, New York, rapper and Asher Roth almost never popped off. Directed by Rik Cordero, the clip captures the song’s comparison of popular schoolyard activities to the games adults play. A split-second decision to perform a show — and skip a hyped Diddy affair — led to the duo’s joint effort. “We were doing a concert in Flint, Michigan, for [the city’s] local radio station,” Consequence said. “They were the first [radio DJs] who stepped out on ‘Whatever You Want’ and added it, before we even went for adds. They asked me to do the concert, and I was like, ‘Cool.’ But the week I was doing that concert was the same week that Diddy was having his birthday party out [in New York City], and I really didn’t put two and two together until the last minute.” More than simply partying, Con was actively trying to secure Diddy and the LOX for what would become the Bad Boy remix of “Whatever You Want.” He was browsing the Louis Vuitton store for a possible ensemble, Con said, when it finally hit him that the concert date coincided with the mogul’s bash. “Long story short, I just had to eat not going to the Diddy party or whatever,” Con said. “I flew out to Michigan. When I get to the hotel, I see Asher’s road manager. He introduces himself. He’s like, ‘Yo, we really love you. You’ve got this slogan you say, and I don’t know if you know it’s a slogan, but it’s our slogan, and it’s ‘I’mma do me regardless.’ ” Con explained that the slogan was from an episode of his YouTube channel Cons TV. Choosing work over partying meant Consequence got a chance to enjoy Asher’s set and really pay attention to him as an MC. After the show, Con played a rough version of “Childish Games” for Roth, who was happy to jump on the song. “He was like, ‘Yo, that’s totally where I’m trying to go with the next record,’ ” Con recalled. The Asleep in the Bread Aisle rapper really wanted people to embrace him as a lyricist, he told Con. “Lo and behold, he came with the verse, and I was like, ‘I hope I ain’t get “Renegade”-d, man,” Con joked, referring to the Jay-Z song, on which many fans think he was bested by featured rapper Eminem. Rick Ross Responds To DJ Vlad Lawsuit Verdict

Vlad awarded $250,000 in $4 million lawsuit over alleged 2008 By Shaheem Reid Rick Ross at the 2008 Ozone Awards Photo: Ben Rose/Getty Images Rick Ross may have $300,000 less in his bank account soon, but he was all smiles when he called MTV News late Thursday in New York. “I’m sitting in Barneys on 51st and Madison,” Ross said. “Had to pick me up a pair of Mason Martin Margiela [sneakers] and two pairs of Louboutins for this Diddy video we shooting this weekend.” On Thursday at the U.S. District Federal Court in New York, a jury of eight awarded DJ Vlad (real name: Vlad Lyubovni) $250,000 in punitive damages and $50,000 in compensatory damages against Ross. The four-day court proceedings stem from an August 10, 2008, incident involving Vlad and Ross’ Triple C’s group. Vlad alleged that Ross orchestrated an attack on him by the collective at an event at the 2008 Ozone Awards for posting images of Ross dressed in a correctional officer’s uniform on his Web site. In the $4 million suit, Vlad said he suffered a broken eye socket, a broken nose, nerve damage to his face, cheek, upper lip, teeth and gums, and required seven stitches under his right eye following the alleged attack. Ross has always maintained his innocence in the matter. On Thursday, Ross told MTV News that he’s putting the lawsuit behind him and focusing on the June 29 release of his LP, Teflon Don. “I’ve been fighting a $4 million lawsuit for the last two years,” Ross said. “My defense was a success. I’ve got to salute Xavier Donaldson, my attorney. Whenever an artist or anybody is put in a position such as a lawsuit in this capacity, so much evidence is represented — videotapes, what have you — to be able to walk out of a courtroom giving the plaintiff less than 10 percent of what he requested, I consider my defense a success. God bless America! The lawsuit is done. Even though I plan to appeal the decision, I thank the courts for the monetary decision that they made. They were extremely lenient, I appreciate that. It’s back to the business for the boss.” Although the amount he’s paying is nothing to sneeze at, Ross has a positive take on the verdict. “It’s a couple of papers, but it was a two-year-long case,” Ross said. “After court expenses, etc., the plaintiff may get $40 or 50K. I’m blessed to be in the situation I’m in. Four mil was at stake. It’s behind me.” For his part, Vlad tweeted “Today is a great day” on Friday morning. Vlad was not available for comment, but on Friday (April 16) his attorney, Brian D. Caplan of Caplan & Ross (no relation to Rick Ross), told MTV News of the verdict: “There is no place in civilized society for members of the media to have to fear retribution for their news coverage and commentary. The jury awarded Mr. Lyubovny $250,000 in punitive damages against Rick Ross to send a message that such conduct will not be tolerated or condoned.” Related Artists Rick Ross (Hip-Hop)

Jay-Z Sues Red Sox Player David Ortiz Over Dominican 40/40 Club

Rapper claims slugger’s Forty-Forty infringes on Jay’s chain of nightclubs. By Gil Kaufman Jay-Z Photo: Bennett Raglin/ WireImage We all know Jay-Z is a huge sports fan, but he’s also a serious businessman. And he certainly doesn’t appreciate people stepping on his enterprise. That explains why, according to The Associated Press, Jay and one of his business partners filed suit on Thursday in Manhattan Federal Court against Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz, claiming that a nightclub opened by Big Papi in his native Dominican Republic infringes on Jay’s 40/40 club concept. The $5 million suit accuses Ortiz of naming his Santo Domingo club Forty-Forty — a reference to 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases — in the hopes of drafting off the popularity of the chain of 40/40 clubs owned by Jay in New York, Las Vegas, Chicago, Tokyo, Macau and Atlantic City. (Ortiz has stolen only 10 bases in his career and is not a member of the elite 40/40 club of baseball players.) “David Ortiz is fully aware of Plaintiff’s Manhattan 40/40 club, since he had been a patron there on several occasions before he opened his infringing Forty/Forty club,” the lawsuit states about the slugger, who often comes to bat to the strains of Jay’s “Hey Papi.” The suit is seeking $5 million in damages and asks for Ortiz to stop using the 40/40 name. The New York Daily News quoted Jay’s lawyer, Peter Raymond, saying that the similarly named clubs are not a mere coincidence. “David Ortiz was at the club at least twice, and certainly knew of it,” Raymond said. The suit claims Ortiz visited Jay’s club when the Red Sox were in town to play the Yankees and was there during the All-Star Game celebration as well. The suit reportedly also includes photos of Ortiz partying at 40/40. Related Artists Jay-Z

OneRepublic Are ‘Freaked Out’ By U2 And Bon Jovi Warm-Up Gigs

‘I have a little bit of Bieber fever … but not as much as Bono fever,’ frontman Ryan Tedder tells MTV News. By James Montgomery OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder Photo: MTV News If you’re a hitmaking machine like OneRepublic, you generally don’t agree to open for anyone. But when two of the biggest acts in the business extend offers to serve as curtain-jerkers, you have to at least think twice. And say yes, apparently. Because this summer, OneRepublic will open for both Bon Jovi and U2, and one of those gigs will see them perform with Jon Bon at the brand-new Meadowlands Stadium in New Jersey, a slot akin to opening for the Pope at the Vatican. “We just got asked to open up the first musical performance at the new Meadowlands Stadium, in New Jersey … so that’s going to be crazy,” OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder laughed. “Something like 70-80,000 New Jerseyans, opening up for Bon Jovi in his home state. So we have to do something special for that. I’m not sure just what, but it’ll be something. Maybe we’ll work a Bruce Springsteen cover into the set.” And since they’ve agreed to two high-profile tours, the guys in OneRepublic know they have to step up their game. A Boss cover just isn’t going to cut it. “It’s kind of like the Olympics: You have America, and then you have Bermuda. They both compete on the same stage, at the same level; one’s just got a little bit of catching up to do,” Tedder said. “So I’d like to think of us as somewhere between Bermuda and, maybe Switzerland, and Bon Jovi’s probably America. Or maybe Canada at the Winter Olympics.” And while the gigs with Bon Jovi are certainly going to be huge, it’s their opening slot on U2’s upcoming tour that really had Tedder and the boys excited — so much so that the mere thought of meeting Bono has them morphing into squealing pre-teens. “The U2 stuff, I mean, that’s kind of why we started a band. … I’m still kind of freaked out about it. And I’m not a guy who takes a bunch of pictures and video, but I’m going to be filming the whole thing. [We’ll be like] one of those idiots, backstage, Twittering our rosy little fingers off,” he laughed. “For all those kids out there, it’s kind of like how you feel about Bieber. Bono is Bieber to us. I have a little bit of Bieber fever too, but not as much as Bono fever. I have a full-on rash. A Bono-sized rash.” Will you check out OneRepublic’s warm-up gigs for Bon Jovi or U2? Toyota: Lexus GX 460 Sales Suspended In The U.S.

Toyota has announced that the company will suspend sales of one of its luxury vehicles in the U.S. The move came after a U.S. consumer organization warned the clients not to purchase the Lexus GX 460 four-wheel drive because of fears that it could roll over. Toyota suspended its sale for further examination of the said product. They have to identify and correct the safety issues described. The company has recalled about eight million cars globally because of safety fears over faulty accelerators, floor pedals that stuck in mats, and braking problems. The Lexus GX 460 is labeled as a “Don’t Buy: Safety Risk” because of a problem which had occurred during its standard emergency-handling tests. During the test, they tried to push to its limits on track’s handling course, but the rear of the GX slid out until the vehicle was almost sideways before the electronic stability control system was able to regain control. The GX 460 has been out in the U.S. market for almost three months and about 5,000 vehicles have been sold. Toyota released a statement defending their company that their engineers also conducted similar tests and such allegations were not true. However, they will suspend its sales and recheck the vehicle.
