‘Titanic 3D’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics are overwhelmingly impressed with James Cameron’s 3-D conversion. By Kevin P. Sullivan Kate Winslet at the “Titanic 3D” premiere Photo: Getty Images James Cameron has never been known for taking things halfway, and the new 3-D conversion of his epic “Titanic” is no exception. Cameron and his team spent years adding computer-generated depth to each frame to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the tragedy. When the director screened 20 minutes of footage for journalists last October, they responded with warm reviews, but now the final product is ready to set sail. Cameron has always stood by 3-D technology for film, through seemingly endless criticism, and now the reviews for his latest 3-D product are coming in as raves. Drew McWeeny from HitFix doled out high praise for “Titanic 3D,” calling it “the very best 3-D conversion of a film that I’ve seen so far.” Though the quality of the 3-D impressed McWeeny overall, he concluded that nothing about the new version of “Titanic” is really that different. “Adding 3-D to that works technically, but I’m not sure it changed anything, one way or another, emotionally,” he said. When converting a film as iconic as “Titanic,” expectations for the re-release can be very high. Lou Lumenick from the New York Post applauded Cameron’s use of 3-D, saying that it even enhanced the quality of the film. “James Cameron’s spectacular new 3-D version of ‘Titanic’ is everything I’d hoped for, and more,” Lumenick said. “He judiciously — and sometimes with great subtlety — uses the technology to make a great film even greater.” Lumenick said he found “Titanic 3D” “less of a strain on the eyes” than Cameron’s “Avatar.” While most 3-D movies come with complaints from the critics, post-conversion tends to suffer a worse fate. Scott Mantz from “Access Hollywood,” however, wrote that the post work on “Titanic” surpasses even films made for the format. “But what’s amazing is that for a movie that was shot in 2-D, ‘Titanic’ looks amazing in 3-D — almost like it was meant to be in 3-D all along.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Titanic.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . James Cameron Dives To Deepest Point On Earth In Submarine

‘Avatar’ director became the first solo diver to dive to 35,756 feet in the Pacific Ocean. By Gil Kaufman James Cameron Photo: Getty Images Director James Cameron has scaled the heights in Hollywood with mega-smashes including “Titanic” and “Avatar.”
Hell, he even once described himself as “king of the world” at the Oscars. But on Sunday, the oceanographic nut reached new depths when he piloted his custom one-man submarine to the deepest point in the world’s oceans by hitting 35,756 feet in the Mariana Trench, southwest of Guam, according to National Geographic . It marks the first time a solo diver has ever reached that point. Following seven years of preparation for the dive, and a few days cooling his heels to wait for bad weather to pass, Cameron pulled the feat off at 2:52 p.m. PT and then shared the historic news on Twitter. “Just arrived at the ocean’s deepest pt. Hitting bottom never felt so good,” Cameron tweeted after the two-and-a-half-hour descent that took him 6.8 miles deep. “Can’t wait to share what I’m seeing w/ you @DeepChallenge.” The record earned props from none other than movie tough guy and former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who tweeted, “Congrats to my great friend on the deepest solo dive ever. Always a pioneer.” Cameron surfaced a short time later after a 70-minute ascent. Cameron helped design the torpedo-shaped sub called the DeepSea Challenger, which he used to collect samples and 3-D video on the ocean floor for nearly six hours. He was pleased with how the dive went, though he lamented that the “manipulator arm” didn’t work, which is “to be expected w/a prototype vehicle. Takes time to iron out bugs.” He said the team plans to go back and do a number of other dives over the next few weeks. “I see this as the beginning of opening up this frontier,” he said. “Open up to science & understanding these deep places.” Though he’s focused much of his time lately on the dive, it’s possible Cameron surfaced with some ideas for the “Avatar” sequel. In August of 2010, the director told us that the sequel could be focused on the oceans of Pandora. “I think what we should do there is — because we’ll have to have characters that are in and under the water — is that we should actually capture them underwater,” Cameron explained. “It’s not the same as going diving, but I like to keep my diving, which I do for pleasure, separate from work.”

Titanic ‘Still Sinks’ In 3-D, James Cameron Confirms

‘Jack still dies,’ director says of the 3-D re-release which he says ‘reinvents’ the 1997 flick. By Kevin P. Sullivan James Cameron Photo: MTV News When “Titanic” hits the big screen again on April 4, the ship will be changing course and heading directly into the audience. Director James Cameron has been one of 3-D’s biggest proponents for years now and has suggested in the past that any film is open for a three-dimensional makeover. It only makes sense, then, that he put his money where his mouth is and converted his own “Titanic.” Cameron spoke with MTV UK about the process and why the real reward of the re-release is the chance to see his blockbuster on the silver screen again after 15 years. The director insisted that the movie remains as it was back in 1997, except for the added dimension. “It ends the same way. The ship still sinks. Jack still dies. Oops, I hope I didn’t spoil it,” he said. As Cameron has said before, he believes that the 3-D element of the re-release plays a supporting role. He simply wants people to see “Titanic” as it was meant to be seen: in a theater. “I think the first thing you should think of, the most important thing, is that you’re going to see it in a movie theater, which is really fundamentally different for anyone who is under a certain age. It hasn’t been in a theater for 15 years, so people know it from video. But they haven’t taken that ride where you commit to the three hours, and you’re going to go on that emotional rollercoaster, and you’re going to come out of the end of the movie in a certain mental, emotional state. It’s very different.” That isn’t the say that the 3-D doesn’t add anything. Cameron sees the conversion as a way to reinterpret the experience. “The 3-D is a kind of way of doing that, a way of reinventing the film, and the 3-D does add something to the experience that was never there before, an immediacy, even an intimacy, which is interesting.” Luckily for Cameron, he had originally shot “Titanic” in a way that was conducive to a 3-D conversion. “Even though I wasn’t shooting it as a 3-D movie 15 years ago, my particular style is to use wider lenses and to wrap the actors in the scenery,” Cameron said. “Because the ship — I don’t like to use the term that it was a character — but the environment was constantly informing what was happening, the elegance, the beauty of the ship, the gilt-edged luxury juxtaposed with steerage third class. All those themes are really manifested in the physicality of the ship. The style of seeing all of that when you convert it to 3-D, it just has this lucidity. You just feel like you’re there.” Are you planning on seeing the 3-D re-release of “Titanic”? Leave your comment below! But his mission was cut short due in part to a hydraulic fluid leak that coated the window of the sub’s “pilot sphere,” obscuring his view. “I lost hydraulics toward the latter part of dive, and I was unable to use the manipulator arm,” Cameron said this morning Considering the daunting task of sending humans into the deep, such technical glitches are to be expected, Cameron emphasized: “It’s a prototype vehicle, so it’s gonna take time to iron out the bugs.” And even with the hydraulic leak obscuring the explorer’s vision, word has it that the ocean floor looked better than Titanic 3D . Kirk Cameron on Homosexuality: Unnatural, Detrimental and Desctructive to Society!

Kirk Cameron’s recent comments to Piers Morgan on gay marriage and homosexuality in general – he’s not a fan, to put it mildly – are causing quite a stir. Cameron, a born-again Christian, said on Friday’s show that he does not support gay marriage, and when it comes to homosexuality in general, he said: “I think that it’s … unnatural. I think that it’s detrimental, and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization.” Kirk Cameron on Gay Marriage Piers then noted that if one of his sons told him he was gay, he’d say it’s great as long as he was happy, and asked Kirk how he would treat such a situation. Cameron responded that he’d talk to them about the “issues” we “wrestle through” in our lives and encourage them not to act on everything they feel. He also criticized Piers for trying to “define” morality. Pot, meet kettle? Herndon Graddick, Sr. Director of Programs at GLAAD, says Cameron, a Born-Again Christian, has views more dated than his Growing Pains character. He calls Kirk “out of step with a vast majority of American, particularly people of faith who believe their gay and lesbian brothers and sisters should be loved and accepted based on their character, not condemned because of their sexual orientation.” GLAAD plans on monitoring Cameron’s media bookings to ensure “the news and entertainment industry is aware of his outrageous anti-gay views.” Cameron has also taken on Stephen Hawking and Darwin in recent years. Spoiler alert: He doesn’t subscribe to those guys’ views either.
