‘Dark Knight Rises’ Prologue Debate Gets ‘Nerdy’

In this week’s ‘Talk Nerdy to Me,’ the team tackles the Batman prologue, the latest ‘Ender’s Game’ casting and more. By Josh Wigler Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures After a weeklong hiatus, “Talk Nerdy to Me” is back in action with all of your comic book, movie and TV needs. From today’s official announcement of the “Dark Knight Rises” prologue to a special cameo from Daniel Day-Lewis’ Abraham Lincoln beard, this week’s “Talk Nerdy” has it all. Keep reading for a taste of what you’ll see this week, and watch the episode in the video below! “Dark Knight” Prologue Confirmed Now that the news is official, the Talk Nerdy team is left wondering what Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight Rises” prologue might entail. Are we in store for a “Batman Begins”-inspired montage? Might we see the death of a popular character from the Caped Crusader’s supporting cast? We floated a few of our own theories, however ridiculous, in this week’s episode. “Ender’s” Cast The wheels are most certainly in motion for “Ender’s Game,” director Gavin Hood’s big-screen adaptation of the beloved Orson Scott Card novel. “Hugo” star Asa Butterfield has been confirmed to play the titular Ender, and there are talks of “True Grit” actress Hailee Steinfeld and the legendary Harrison Ford joining the cast as well. Great actors, to be sure, but are they the right ones for the project? Find out what Nerdy’s Brian Phares thinks about the upcoming project. The “Game of Thrones” Blu’s When you play the “Game of Thrones,” you win or you die. But when it comes to the HBO fantasy show’s upcoming Blu-ray collection, it looks like we’re all going to win. The Blu-ray was announced earlier this week, and the details are bound to have fans of the franchise foaming at the mouth. The Nerdy team geeked out over the upcoming collection, especially the announced “Creating the Dothraki Language” feature. Spider-Leak, Spider-Leak The weekend box office is dry in terms of new wide releases, so we recommend you just go ahead and see “The Muppets” again. It’s that good! In lieu of our normal box-office report, this week’s Talk Nerdy focused on the infamous “Amazing Spider-Man” Lizard leak from earlier in the week. Needless to say, the team was not impressed. Michael Gough, ‘Batman’ Co-Star, Dies At 94

British actor played butler Alfred in the 1989-1997 adaptations. By Aly Semigran Michael Gough in “Batman” Photo: Warner Bros. Gotham City has lost one of its own today. Legions of “Batman” fans are mourning the loss of British actor Michael Gough, who played the Caped Crusader’s iconic right-hand man/butler Alfred Pennyworth in several of the comic’s movie adaptations. On Thursday (March 17), Gough, who appeared alongside Michael Keaton in the 1989 original “Batman,” passed away at the age of 94. The cause of his death has not yet been reported. In addition to playing Alfred (a role that was later taken over by Michael Caine) in 1992’s “Batman Returns,” 1995’s “Batman Forever” and 1997’s “Batman & Robin,” the BAFTA Award-winning actor also appeared as both the Celestial Toymaker and Councillor Hedin in the original “Doctor Who” television series. He won a Tony Award in 1979 for the Broadway play “Bedroom Farce.” Gough was born in 1916 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and began his acting career in 1946. He starred in a number of TV-movies and series, including 1967’s “Pride and Prejudice,” in which he played Mr. Bennet. His long list of impressive film credits includes 1962’s “The Phantom of the Opera,” Sydney Pollack’s Oscar-winner “Out of Africa” and Martin Scorcese’s “The Age of Innocence.” Gough had maintained a good working relationship with director Tim Burton since their time together on “Batman.” He also appeared in the director’s “Sleepy Hollow,” “Corpse Bride” and, in what would be his last major project, as the voice of Dodo Bird in 2010’s “Alice in Wonderland.”

New ‘Superman’ To Follow ‘Batman Begins’ Blueprint, Zack Snyder Says

‘The whole thing is very much from that perspective of respect the canon but don’t be a slave to the movies,’ director tells L.A. Times. By Eric Ditzian Zack Snyder and Superman Photo: AFP/ Alex Ross/ DC Comics “Superman” director Zack Snyder finds himself in much the same position Christopher Nolan did in the run-up to “Batman Begins.” Nolan had to pick up the scraps of a broken franchise — thanks, “Batman & Robin”! — and re-engineer the Caped Crusader for a new century. Snyder, similarly, finds the Man of Steel in poor shape following an attempted 2006 reboot that left audiences underwhelmed. Is it any surprise, then, that Snyder plans to follow the example Nolan set back in 2005? “Literally, the one thing that everyone can start to think about is that we’re making a movie that finally goes with the approach that there’s been no other Superman movies,” Snyder told the Los Angeles Times. “If you look at ‘Batman Begins,’ there’s that structure, there’s the canon that we know about and respect, but on other hand there’s this approach that pre-supposes that there haven’t been any other movies. In every aspect of design and of story, the whole thing is very much from that perspective of respect the canon but don’t be a slave to the movies.” To that end, it helps, no doubt, that Nolan has taken on a sort of godfather role on the project (officially, he’s a producer), not just as a creative guide, but as a concrete example showing that such an approach can actually work. “Chris is awesome. He’s super-respectful but super-helpful, too. You can’t imagine a more generous [collaborator],” Snyder said. “Once he sort of got what I want to do with it, he was like, ‘OK,’ and once he said, ‘You know what, that’s awesome,’ now he’s 100 percent. If I say, ‘What do you think of this?’ he’s like, ‘That’s awesome,’ and then there’s a great give-and-take about it, a great conversation that we can have about it and making it better every day.” There are a lot of days still ahead. The movie — which, Snyder confirmed, has the working title “Man of Steel” — won’t hit theaters until December 2012. Before they even begin shooting, Snyder plans to release a photo of Henry Cavill in costume as Superman , lest an unsanctioned paparazzi photo become the first-ever look at the revamped hero. What we end up seeing in the first official pic, and what ends up onscreen late next year, may not be at all what we’re expecting. “In some ways Superman is the most recognizable superhero on the planet but also the most unknown. Just what he can be?” Snyder said. “People have preconceived ideas about him but probably all of them are wrong.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Man of Steel.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .

Christian Bale Excited To Star With Tom Hardy In ‘Dark Knight Rises’

‘He seems like he’s a balls-out,’ Bale says of the ‘Inception’ actor. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Christian Bale Photo: Jun Sato/WireImage Who will Tom Hardy play in “The Dark Knight Rises” ? Rumor has it the “Inception” actor is set to become a villain, though director Christopher Nolan has gone on record as saying the Riddler won’t factor into his upcoming third installment of the “Batman” reboot. There’s talk that Hardy would do well in the role of troubled psychologist Hugo Strange, crime lord Black Mask or gun-toting hit man Deadshot. Whoever Hardy ends up portraying, the man he’ll likely do battle against is excited for the opportunity to act with him. “I liked him in ‘Inception’ and I did see ‘Bronson’ as well,” said Christian Bale — Bruce Wayne/Batman himself — in a recent interview with MTV News. “He seems like he’s a balls-out.” When we asked Bale if he was looking forward to Hardy as an opponent, he answered, “Yeah, sounds good.” Did Bale confirm that Hardy will in fact be a villain in “The Dark Knight Rises”? Did the “opponent” part of our question breeze right by Bale? Watch the video interview and judge for yourself. While Bale left the door slightly open to returning for a fourth “Batman” flick, he seemed fairly convinced that “The Dark Knight Rises” will be his and Nolan’s final installment in the DC Comics franchise. “I think so. That’s up to Chris,” he said. “That was always what the discussion was. But you know, if Chris says, ‘I see another story here,’ then we’ll be up for it. But in my mind, I’m expecting this will be it.” Of course, there’s always the fanciful hope that Bale and Nolan will reunite a few decades from now for an adaptation of Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns,” which tells the story of a 55-year-old Bruce Wayne who comes out of retirement to become the Caped Crusader once again. “That maybe would not be bad,” Bale laughed of the idea. “Maybe in 20 years time, but you need that break.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Dark Knight Rises.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .
