REVIEW: A Great Canadian Artist Reveals Some Secrets — Including Why He Once Ate Tar — in Neil Young Journeys

Even Neil Young couldn’t resist. “This is a town in north Ontario,” he says at the beginning of Neil Young Journeys , Jonathan Demme’s uneven, engrossing combination of road-trip documentary and concert film. Journeys opens with Young in his hometown of Omemee, which alert Ontarians might note is not actually all that far north. It’s less than two hours from Toronto by car, which is how Young and Demme travel there, in a stately 1956 Ford Crown Victoria, for a gig at the city’s famed Massey Hall. He’s one of those legends Americans tend to assume emerged from one of their forbidding landscapes, or pockets in time. In the decades since he went from busking for change on Toronto’s streets to playing folk rock with Buffalo Springfield in the 1960s, Neil Young has become something of a Rosetta Stone across several worlds, including the Canadian-American axis. A number of genres and eras of music can be traced through his career, and many of his songs — most famously, perhaps, “Ohio” — document and respond to the times with vigor and alarm. He sang about Elvis and Johnny Rotten in “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black),” the song Kurt Cobain quoted 15 years later in his suicide note. Around that time some friends and I made a two-hour drive of our own, to the enormous outdoor venue where Soundgarden and Pearl Jam were opening for Young. For us the latter third of the bill was a puzzle; why were our favorites ceding to this aging folky? Then Young shuffled out and rocked our worlds. Massey Hall is more intimate — under 3,000 seats — and at 65, as Demme emphasizes with his clamp-like focus on the performer, Young can still smash it up. Most of the film alternates between brief vignettes of a congenial Young at home and on the road and Young on stage, the impenetrable ax-man with that warbly, mournful, loon call of a voice. After ninety minutes of being so up-close and personal that for long stretches we’re looking directly up Young’s nose (a camera was attached to his mic stand, to dubious effect), the shell of his enigma shows barely a scratch. In Omemee he points out the school named after his father (writer Scott Young) and the home of the boy who persuaded him to eat tar (it’s like chocolate!). The family’s land in Pickering is derelict these days, but Young and his brother (who leads the caravan) remember how and where things used to be. The solo concert looks back as well, alternating between old glories and Young’s ever prolific present — his latest album, Americana , which reunites him with longtime collaborators Crazy Horse, was released earlier this month. The Journeys show, which took place last May, is a blend of songs from his 2010 album, Le Noise , and 1970s gems. At times the combination of the newer stuff and Demme’s static presentation sets the mind a-wanderin’; the mic-cam, for instance, seems like part of a struggle to hold our attention. Even less successful is the intrusion, during “Ohio,” of news footage and big red lettering announcing the events of that day at Kent State University and the names of the victims. It feels unnecessary to crowd that information into a song whose power is increasingly derived from the cumulative reminder, made across decades now, of what was lost; he’s never stopped singing that refrain. The audience is never seen and only faintly heard. This puts a lot of visual pressure on a very inward performer. Young is a beast onstage, to be sure — he seems to re-grow an appendix for each song, so that it can be removed, without anesthetic, before our eyes — but it’s a centrifugal charisma. The more intimate the song (in “Love and War” he confesses to betraying a partner and hitting “a bad chord,” presumably with Living with War , his controversial post-9/11 album; in “Hitchhiker” a laundry list of drugs taken and paranoias suffered is recited), the further away he seems — and the more we long for another minute with that other Young, the one who’ll admit to shoving firecrackers up a turtle’s back end when he was a boy. There’s no way to resolve a mystique like Young’s, as Demme seems to be discovering. Journeys is his third Young documentary in the last six years. Partly that has to do with the preservation of his talent: If all the new songs aren’t killers, all the old one weren’t either, and he remains a remarkably strong and dedicated musician. I think the other part has to do with the more abstract idea that while he’s often treated as an elder statesman — we’ve tried to make him one, “godfather of grunge” being one label — his legacy is more that of an elusive fellow traveler, one who has been telling our stories all along. Demme saved “Helpless” for the credits, where it played over images of small-town Ontario. I cried like a baby. Follow Michelle Orange on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Will Playboy Reinvigorate Jenny McCarthy’s Career?

Kim Kardashian, Lindsay Lohan and other starlets have proven that appearing in the men’s mag can do wonders for buzz. By John Mitchell Jenny McCarthy on the cover of Playboy magazine Photo: After flying a little lower on the celebrity radar, Jenny McCarthy has been grabbing headlines again for her upcoming Playboy cover . The TV personality and author is featured in the July/August issue in an eight-page spread she says she’s “really proud of.” But McCarthy is just the latest star to turn an appearance in the legendary men’s magazine into genuine buzz. The 39-year-old made her Playboy debut in 1993 and went on to become Playmate of the Year. Her star turn in the magazine soon caught the eye of MTV, who offered a much-sought-after co-host gig on the popular ’90s dating show “Singled Out.” Her effervescent personality made her a hosting favorite and she has continued her career in TV — she currently hosts NBC’s “Love in the Wild” — though her focus has turned in recent years to her work as an activist for autism issues. The interest around her sixth pictorial is sure to put her firmly back in the conversation after years of being best known as Jim Carrey’s former girlfriend and for her controversial stance on child immunization. If past Playboy centerfolds are any indication, this pictorial may be only the opening salvo in a reinvigorated career. From Lindsay Lohan to Kim Kardashian, an appearance on the cover of Playboy proved to be just the shot in the arm some starlets’ careers needed to get them back on track. Kim Kardashian (2007) Though she remains a divisive figure, Kardashian was known almost exclusively in late 2007 for one scandalous thing: her sex tape with Ray J. In October of that year, Kim, along with her very large and colorful family, debuted in E!’s “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” and one of the first topics the show dealt with was her decision to pose for the December 2007 issue of Playboy. The attention paid to Kim’s cover drove ratings for the show through the roof and now, five long years later, “Keeping Up” and its many spin-offs remain tent-pole programming for E! Since first posing, Kim’s decision to bare all has factored into yet another more recent episode of the show. Meanwhile, she and her family have started an empire, making millions licensing their image to myriad products and launching a clothing line and fragrances. Kim is even branching out into acting with a role in Tyler Perry’s upcoming “The Marriage Counselor.” Drew Barrymore (1995) Barrymore’s may well be the exemplar of a career that was rescued after an appearance in the men’s mag. The actress was the definition of trouble in the late-’80s and early ’90s: She rebelled against her family publicly, her teenage private life was tabloid fodder and she was plagued by serious drug problems and a flagging career. But in January 1995, she posed for the magazine looking happy and healthy and announced she was ready to get serious. That same year, she earned raves for her turn in Oscar-nominated director Herbert Ross’ “Boys on the Side” and followed it up with a role in Woody Allen’s underrated musical “Everyone Says I Love You.” In ’96, she shocked audiences in “Scream,” and two years later she found herself headlining back-to-back hits “The Wedding Singer” and “Ever After.” In the years since, she’s emerged as one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood, directed a major film (“Whip It!”) and even scored Golden Globe and SAG awards for her role in HBO’s Emmy favorite “Grey Gardens.” Lindsay Lohan (2012) Exactly where Lindsay Lohan is on her road to a comeback depends mostly on how you feel about Lindsay Lohan. Sure, her turn on “Saturday Night Live” wasn’t acclaimed , but it brought in huge ratings . She’s acting again, but her first big post-legal-troubles role is in a Lifetime movie , and there have been, ahem, issues . Yes, she’s booked a role in a buzzed-about indie film written by Bret Easton Ellis (“American Psycho,” “Less Than Zero”) and directed by Paul Schrader (writer of “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull”), but she’s co-starring with a porn star . How above board can that be? Regardless of all that, the point is, Lindsay’s trying, and it all began with the January/February 2012 double issue of Playboy. Lohan channeled Marilyn Monroe’s old Hollywood glamour for the 10-page spread, which went on to be one of the magazine’s biggest sellers in years, prompting the magazine to return to the presses after it sold out in many markets. Chelsea Handler (2009) Things were going far from badly for Chelsea Handler when she posed for Playboy ‘s cover in December 2009. Indeed, with two best-selling books and a hit chat show on E!, things were pretty great. But looking back, the never-shy comedienne, who did not appear fully nude (only scantily clad) in her pictorial, has seen her career skyrocket so spectacularly in the years since that it’s hard to not see the photo shoot and, perhaps more importantly, the attitude behind its conception, as the very thing that has put her where she is today. Since 2009, her talk show’s ratings have exploded, she’s released two more books and been given her own publishing imprint. She co-starred, co-created and produced two sitcoms, launched a major stand-up tour and appeared on the big screen with Reese Witherspoon in the comedy “This Means War.” She is a media empire of her own creation, with Time calling her one of its “100 Most Influential People in the World” this year. Of course, this tactic doesn’t always pan out. Hoping to capitalize on the celebrity she developed on MTV’s “The Hills,” Heidi Montag posed for the magazine’s September 2009 issue. Just a few months later, her debut album, Superficial, badly failed to entice buyers, proving that the attention brought by a Playboy cover is really only useful when a star follows it up with something the public finds equally interesting. Do you think Jenny McCarthy’s Playboy pictorial will be good for her career? Let us know in the comments below!

‘Catching Fire’: Wait, Is Romeo Joining The Cast?!

Romeo Miller tells MTV News he’s already met with Lionsgate about possibly appearing in one of the ‘Hunger Games’ flicks. By Kevin P. Sullivan Romeo Photo: Romeo Miller (formerly known as Lil’ Romeo) has racked up an impressive number of credits in the decade or so that he’s been acting. As the 22-year-old makes moves in his career as an adult actor, Romeo has his eyes set on one franchise in particular. One of Miller’s ideal projects would be a trip to Panem for ” The Hunger Games ,” he told MTV News during a recent interview for ” Madea’s Witness Protection .” In fact, he’s already met with Lionsgate to discuss the possibility. Although he got his start as the rap star son of Master P, Miller has been acting for years now. “A lot of people don’t know I’ve been doing this for 10 years now,” he said. “I felt that all of that was practice, leading up to the time now.” But for his next roles, Miller has his sights set on an acting career similar to Will Smith. “I want to be the next big action hero or I want to do a lot of romantic type movies, romantic comedies, a little bit of everything, but definitely the next action hero,” Miller said, and then added, “You can see me in ‘The Hunger Games’ or something like that. Just throwing that out there.” Though he admitted to not being very familiar with Suzanne Collins’ books, Miller confirmed that there has been some discussion about possibly joining “Catching Fire,” which is currently casting. “I actually just met with Lionsgate about that, so you may be seeing me in one of the ‘Hunger Games.’ That’s all I’m saying,” Miller said. “Not a particular role, we just had a meeting, seeing if it was something I was interested in. I can’t really talk too much, or they’ll kill you. You know how ‘The Hunger Games’ is.” Who should Romeo play in “Catching Fire”? Leave your comment below! Erin Wasson is a 30 year old model who I don’t think has really done all that much in the last 5 years, but who is a name I remember because she’s hot….apparently she’s a vampire in the Ab Lincoln Vampire Hunter movie that I think should have never been made based on concept alone….I mean coupled with offending your founding fathers long after their death by shitting on their graves…..but that is a good move for her to give her career a little more longivity….cuz modeling doesn’t last forever and it is all down hill at 27 for any bitch…. That said, she’s brought her rock and roll, prison tattoos, sufer chick titties to ZINK magazine, her body is fit, and I’m into it.

Jenny McCarthy’s Playboy Cover of the Day

My friends over at Playboy took a risky strategy that I can only blame on Heff’s dying, strokes, totaly disconnect from what people actually want to see, that comes in the form of Jenny McCarthy showing off her naked body in Playboy like it was 1999 and she was just starting up her career, instead of it being 2012, when her career has pretty much hit a brick wall…..and I guess the only hope is that her implants are only 16 years old, so we can stare at those like sex offenders, when her AUSTISTIC child making rest of her get ignored…. I don’t care how fit bitch is, there comes an age when you put your clothes back on and never take them off, where publicity stunts come in the form of attempted suicide and drunk driving…not showing off bush she’s already been quoted as saying she grew out to cover up her old mangled lips… Either way, disaster…but I’ll post the rest of the pics when they drop….cuz I like disasters in the form of the woman form.

Katy Perry Planning Special Performance For ‘Part Of Me’ Premiere

Singer will perform on Hollywood Boulevard before hitting red carpet and answering your questions. By Christina Garibaldi Katy Perry Photo: Katy Perry is finally set to close the final chapter of Teenage Dream with the release of her upcoming film, “Part of Me.” The 3-D documentary follows the singer over the course of 2011 as she experiences both highs and lows in her career and personal life. On Tuesday, June 26, Katy will be hitting the red carpet at Los Angeles’ Grauman’s Chinese Theatre to premiere “Part of Me,” and MTV News will be there to talk to the star. But before Perry walks the carpet, she is treating fans to a special live performance on the famed Hollywood Boulevard. We want you to get in on the action as well via Twitter, by using the @mtvnews handle and hashtag #askkaty to get your questions answered by Perry herself. Perry’s flick gives fans a rare glimpse into the life of a pop star. For those who couldn’t make her California Dreams Tour , the film gives a front-row seat to her concert and shows us what life is really like on the road. Perry also shows an extremely vulnerable side in the film. We get to witness early footage of the star, showing her dealing with her parents’ strictness. We also see peeks of her relationship with ex-husband Russell Brand and get an idea of her tireless work schedule. Perry recently premiered the video for “Wide Awake,” a song she wrote for the movie, during her “MTV First,” and it was there that she opened up about the film, saying that even though she may be one of the biggest pop stars in the world, she deals with real issues like any other woman. “There’s some scenes that I know people will screenshot and be like, ‘Oh, she looks like a fat cow with zits.’ But I put those in there because that’s a part of me, that’s reality, and I’m OK with that now,” Perry told MTV News’ Sway Calloway. “It’s been a process of learning it’s OK, and I’m accepting of my own skin, but I think it’s important for young kids to see that you don’t have to be perfect in order to achieve your dreams, because I think that the world has this strange, skewed perception of successful people, that they’re just so perfectly made up, and they have all these possessions that make them who they are, and that’s not at all how I got here; I came from nothing. I didn’t have anything.” “Katy Perry: Part of Me” hits theaters July 5.
