Hollyweird’s New Leading Man Banger Anthony Mackie Talks Overcoming Hollyweird Blackout & Making History With Vanity Fair!

This New Orleans-bred actor is the first Black actor to be featured in nearly a decade on the cover of Vanity Fair’s Hollywood Issue. Anthony Mackie changed the game by landing on the cover of Vanity Fair’s 17th annual “Hollywood Issue” ; and admits he realized the weight he carries by gracing the highly coveted glossy cover! Mackie opens up: “The magazine came out and it’s interesting how the conversations have changed, which is surprising to me,” “When my publicist told me they got me for the cover of Vanity Fair for the Hollywood edition I didn’t know what it meant. Looking at it now it was a monumental step in the course of my career. I want to be 70 or 80 like an Anthony Hopkins or Morgan Freeman and look back at a body of work instead of getting one or two jobs and trying to overcome the idea of just being an actor instead of being an artist. It’s been amazing. Every day I tell people that I don’t want you to overlook my race. I don’t want you to look at me as something different than what I am. When you look at me I don’t want you to like me in spite of being a Black male. I want you to include me because of who I am, that being a Black male. It’s been funny from both the Black and White perspective; from the everyday perspective and the Hollywood perspective. Everyone has an opinion so I try to put it out there and let it be what it is.” “The last Black man to be on the cover of Vanity Fair for the Hollywood edition was Omar Epps and that was over 10 years ago. I think it’s good for right now, but it definitely does not solidify in my path in Hollywood history.” Despite having starred in films like ‘Million Dollar Baby,’ ‘The Hurt Locker,’ ‘Notorious’ and ‘The Adjustment Bureau,’ Mackie, like many Black actors, has a face people know even when they can’t remember his name. “I get mistaken for one of my closest friends, Jamie Hector who was on ‘The Wire,’” he laughed. “Literally every day someone stops me and asks me for my autograph and if they can take a picture with me for being on ‘The Wire.’” Though Hollywood recognized Mackie’s value by including him in the Vanity Fair issue, the Obie Award winner does feel that the recent Black-out during this past award show season was disturbing. “It’s frustrating, but not for the reason of not having the representation. I think we’re at a point where we need to start making our own movies. I think there are enough stories out there that we should be telling those stories. I think in the early 90′s we had the opportunity to make our own movies and we got complacent. If you go back and watch ‘Love Jones’ and ‘Love and Basketball’ or ‘The Brothers,’ they were great movies and they represented us. ‘Boyz N The Hood’ and ‘Juice’ represented us. We made those movies and everybody just got lazy. It’s no reason that the people who made those movies shouldn’t still be making movies. Martin Scorsese didn’t stop after his first movie. James Cameron didn’t stop after ‘Titanic’ so why is it that the people who represent us and tell our stories just don’t exist anymore. They’re out there living in LA writing. They’re making movies; they’re just not making the movies that represent us. That’s what frustrates me because I feel like you have an entire new crop of young talent and they have not only no one to work with but they don’t have any material to work on. You can’t say we don’t have the money or the opportunities because White people are doing it. If you look at what Judd Apatow is doing, he’s shown us how to go out and take our ideas, put them on a page and make it. Ben Affleck made ‘Gone Baby Gone’ and ‘The Town’ because he couldn’t get cast as an actor. I think it’s about time that we as Black Hollywood stop talking about what people aren’t giving us and get up off our ass and start making the movies that we want to make.” With all this chit chat about making black movies, will Mackie make a move from actor to producer?! Or is he all talk?! Source

Odd Future’s South By Southwest Adventure: Watch Now!

MTV News cameras capture L.A. collective’s 2011 SXSW journey. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Christopher “CJ” Smith Odd Future’s Tyler, the Creator Photo: MTV News By now, the carnage has been cleared and the backlash has already begun, but earlier this month, Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All — the 10-member Los Angeles rap collective/sleeper cell with whom we are currently obsessed — stormed the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas, playing more shows than anyone could possibly fathom (officially/unofficially, the number stands at seven), leaving a path of destruction and laceration in their wake.

Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale: Will The Album Be #1?

Record is projected to sell 275,000 to 300,000 units in its first week. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears Photo: Jive Britney Spears’ new album, Femme Fatale , is a chugging dance-pop album full of sexual innuendo and thumping beats, made even sexier by Spears’ flirty singing style. It’s Spears’ latest release since 2008’s Circus, which sped straight up the charts as soon as Britney’s dedicated fans could get their hands on it. While Spears remained somewhat under the radar for her last release, this time around, the pop star has been on a media blitz, and as of press time, Spears had the #1 album on iTunes. Hits Daily Double Senior Editor Roy Trakin explained to MTV News that judging from sales so far, Spears will likely have the #1 album by next week. “We’re going out with the projection 275,000 to 300,000 [albums sold]; probably below label projections but those are always inflated. I think everything’s kicking in. There seems to be a lot of press attention,” he said of the album. “I think this is still a healthy total for her given the market and given where her career has been. This is a good showing.” Not only have sales been strong, music critics have also been loving the album. “The critical reception seems to be fairly positive, as well. That doesn’t have much to do with sales, but the general feeling is positive. She’s gonna be #1,” Trakin said. “300,000 is the over-under.” This week, some of Spears’ biggest competition comes from Adele, whose 21 has been selling consistently well for weeks, Jennifer Hudson’s newest release, I Remember Me, which sits at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart, Chris Brown, whose album F.A.M.E. is currently the #1 album in the country, and this week’s other big new release, Wiz Khalifa’s debut album, Rolling Papers . “Given the state of the market right now, this will probably be, I would think, this will end up being the second biggest debut of the year. Only Adele would be larger this year,” Trakin said. “That’s pretty good, actually. The real big story this week is Wiz Khalifa with Rolling Papers, with between 190,000 and 215,000.” Is there any chance of an upset that forces Spears out of the #1 spot? Trakin explains that that is unlikely, saying, “The Wiz Khalifa showing is strong, but it’s about 100,000 below what Britney’s gonna do.” To see what Spears has to say about the album and to watch her as she puts the finishing touches on it, don’t miss the “Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale” special, airing Sunday, April 3, at 9 p.m. ET on MTV. Femme Fatale: The Making Of Britney Spears’ Album

Britney insiders Claude Kelly and Sabi talk about working on the pop star’s brand-new record. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale Photo: Jive Britney Spears teamed up with Dr. Luke and Max Martin to make an edgy, dark club album, and the result is Femme Fatale, which features genre-busting pop songs about love, sex and the big, fat bass . But in addition to that pop dream team, Spears also hooked up with a wide array of collaborators (Travis Barker, will.i.am, Sabi), songwriters (Claude Kelly, Bonnie McKee, Ester Dean) and producers (Bloodshy, Benny Blanco, Rodney Jerkins), who helped create the sonically bombastic pop record that dropped on Tuesday (March 29). MTV News caught up with songwriter Kelly and newbie pop singer Sabi, and got the inside scoop on the making of Femme Fatale. “Here’s what people don’t realize and here’s what I’ve noticed: She’s very, very much in control of what she records, how she sounds, how she portrays herself on the record,” Kelly, who wrote “Gasoline,” said of Britney’s process. “There’s no grand master puppeteering — that’s kind of a myth. She knows what she’s going to cut. She’s not going to sing anything she doesn’t want to and she has this amazing ability when she gets behind the mic. It’s like eye of the tiger.” Kelly went on to say that when Spears hits the studio to record an album, she knows what fans want to hear from her. “Her rhythm is spot-on. You tell her, ‘This part needs to be sexy,’ and she’s like, ‘I got it already,’ ” he explained. “It’s that rare ability that only really true artists have to get into character and to sell a theme and that’s what she’s good at. … I think because she’s been out for so long, people forget the evolution of her career. When you’re in the studio with her, you quickly get reminded about how versatile she is and how clever she is. She’s a show-woman.” Although Sabi, who appears on the track “(Drop Dead) Beautiful,” didn’t hit the studio with Brit, she felt the star’s presence when she was dropping her verse. “She recorded it already and then I went in. … I rapped on it and I’m a singer. I rap when I feel the mood is right, so it all worked out. When I’m inspired to rap, I rap, but I’m a singer,” she explained. “Me and [producer] Benny Blanco, we were just sitting there throwing ideas back and forth.” Two other collabos made the album’s final cut, but Sabi’s the only other femme fatale on the record. “To be the only female on Britney’s album, just in general, this whole thing is just bananas. I feel very lucky to be this person in this position right now,” she said. “It is crazy. She does not do features that often and I think maybe it hasn’t sunken in yet. It’s a wonderful opportunity and maybe when it starts circulating, it’ll sink in what’s really going on. But right now, I don’t know where I’m at but it feels good. When this song hits radio, it’s going to be surreal.” What do you think of Femme Fatale ? Tell us in the comments! Related Videos Britney Spears Drops Her Femme Fatale Album! Daniel Radcliffe Says Final ‘Harry Potter’ Press Tour Will Be ‘Weird’

‘How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying’ actor will trade Broadway for red carpets when ‘Deathly Hallows’ premieres in July. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Radcliffe Photo: MTV News The end is almost upon us. Over a decade after production on the first “Harry Potter” began, the final film hits theaters in July, and as J.K. Rowling promised Daniel Radcliffe , she’s not going to write more books about the boy wizard. That’s fine by Radcliffe, who has joked on many an occasion that he’s ready to leave the franchise behind, not least because there’d be something unseemly about playing Harry as the actor approached middle age. But he’s not done with “Potter” yet. There’s still the upcoming press tour for the second part of “Deathly Hallows,” which will require Radcliffe to step away from his new Broadway musical, “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” for a few days. And, as he told MTV News recently, transitioning from one show-business world to another is going to be strange. “In a way, it will probably be weird to suddenly have to switch out of the mode I’m in for this show and then go and do press,” he said, adding with a laugh, “But I can do that. I’m very versatile!” Being able to jump from performing to plugging and back again, Radcliffe added, simply comes with the territory. “I think any actor that does a big film or even a show like this now without the expectation that they will have to do press for it is very naive,” he said. “It’s part of the job. It’s as much a part of the job almost as anything else.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Snoop Dogg Explains How Kanye West Collabo ‘Eyez Closed’ Happened

‘I was in the studio with Swizz Beatz and heard some beats, and it was Kanye West,’ Snoop recalls to MTV News. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Steven Roberts Snoop Dogg Photo: MTV News Snoop Dogg was working with Swizz Beatz in the studio when he decided to let the world know he settled on a name for his next album — Doggystyle 2: The Doggumentary — which he later shortened to just Doggumentary. The producer proved to be good luck for the veteran rapper. During another session in New York when the pair were working together, Snoop said he heard music coming from another room and decided to investigate. The result? “Eyez Closed,” from his latest project — which dropped Tuesday (March 29) — produced by and featuring Kanye West; John Legend also appears on the track. “I was in the studio with Swizz Beatz and walked down the hallway and heard some beats, and it was Kanye West,” Snoop told MTV News. “He called me into the studio and played me a couple of songs from his album. He was like, ‘I got this song that’s not gonna make the album, but listen to it.’ ” The rocking “Eyez Closed” lifts a sample from Jimmy Spicer’s “Money (Dollar Bill Y’all),” also used by Maino for his breakout “Hi Hater.” On the number, a reflective Snoop pays respect to the younger generation while reaffirming his status. “Run these MCs, I’m tougher than leather,” Snoop raps. Earlier this month, Snoop spoke with MTV News about his career, which has spawned 11 solo albums, from his Death Row days to riding with Master P and his No Limit soldiers to his latest incarnation as Wiz Khalifa’s mentor . “I don’t really think of it as reinventing myself, ’cause it’s all within me,” Snoop explained. “It’s all who I am. It’s more or less faces of Snoop Dogg or characters of Snoop Dogg that’s in this one spirit. But at the same time, he’s able to embellish different parts of the character to create this look, that style, that sound. But it’s all the same. Because when I do it all at once, when I do a concept that has all the songs, I don’t have enough time to change and act like this; it’s still me.” Have you heard Snoop’s latest yet? Britney Spears Is A True ‘Superstar,’ San Francisco Drag Queens Say

‘I had a great time up there,’ Donna Sachet tells MTV News of opening for Brit at ‘Good Morning America’ show. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears performs in San Francisco on March 27 Photo: Araya Diaz/ WireImage Britney Spears had a busy weekend. She performed for her fans in San Francisco , just days after she graced the stage in Las Vegas at the Palms, where MTV was filming her for an upcoming special. At her San Francisco show, which was being taped for “Good Morning America,” Spears had five drag queens in over-the-top costumes warm up the crowd with their sassy back-and-forth. After the performance, MTV News caught up with two of the queens, who told us it was a lot of fun opening for the femme fatale. “As a huge Britney fan, it was amazing,” Pollo Del Mar told us. “I was excited just to have Britney Spears here in San Francisco, but to participate and be a part of it was amazing.” “It was a treat,” Donna Sachet added. “I had a great time up there. Five drag queens, all different types of drag, we loved it. We were complimented that Britney wanted to start with something like that.” During her set, Spears performed three tracks from Femme Fatale, out Tuesday, and Pollo gushed that the pop star did a great job. “I thought it was amazing,” Pollo said. “It shows why she’s a superstar and certainly I think that the crowd response showed that she’s beloved. … The reason I love Britney Spears is throughout her career, she’s shown she’s human, she’s fallible … I think that makes her someone people can rally behind and love.” Spears performance featured three eye-catching costumes, complete with sequins, latex and lights. “We do get ideas from her costuming and from her dancers and her energy,” Donna admitted. Fans were equally dazzled by Spears’ set. “It was amazing,” a fan named Sarah told us after the show wrapped. “It was so hot! We live here in the city, and she was sexier than ever and I’d go lesbian for her. She really blew it up.” Are you planning to buy Britney’s new album? Tell us in the comments!
