Inside the Low-Paying Cheezburger Empire [Cubicle Culture]

Ben Huh ‘s media startup is focused on LOLcats and other internet animal memes. Things are less cute behind the scenes, where underpaid and overworked humans lurk, according to several company veterans who answered our recent request for information . Cheezburger Network might be the internet’s largest “meme aggregator,” according to Wired , with upwards of $4 million per year gleaned from other people’s pet pictures, supplied to the company for free. But that doesn’t mean the 30 or so employees share fairly in the bounty; as we reported last week, Huh has blogged about proudly offering jobs at Seattle’s minimum wage of $8.55 or slightly higher, at $10. Those low wages permeate the company, insiders and their associates tell us, with some former workers also describing worker misclassification unpaid overtime. On the bright side, it sounds like people have fun with their co-workers, as even some detractors tell us, and one employee wrote in to say his experience at Cheezburger Network beat the pants off her/his (other?) minimum wage jobs — not exactly a high bar, but, given the state of the economy, a practical one. After hearing from seven different people, most of them current or former employees or contractors of Huh’s, we’ve broken their comments down into a few categories below (some sources have multiple quotes). We’ve also included a company-wide memo Huh sent to his staff about our original post, saying he wanted to “solve” any labor issues. Hey Huh: If you’re feeling reformist, we know another Web publisher who might be able to lend you some guidance . Pay and overtime Former worker: In 2009 I made less than $15,000 and would have had to pay a couple hundred dollars to the IRS if it weren’t for a friend who is a crafty accountant/tax preparer. Current worker: I’m paid hourly, but am encouraged to never bill more than 30 hours a week, although I routinely work 40 to 45 hours. If I could find a place that would pay me fairly, I would do it .. but right now, you take the work you can find. Yet another tipster said Cheezburger Network expects staff and/or contractors to work “extensive hours without overtime pay,” a statement we quoted in our last post. Work status Former worker: Huh’s practice of paying “contract employees” is borderline illegal and I’d love to nail his ass to the wall for it. The work that he has his employees doesn’t fall under the qualifications listed on WA state’s contract employee Web page. Another former worker: I can confirm you’re right [with statements in prior post]. Not only was the pay slightly higher than minimum (some positions were outsourced to another country altogether), but he’s skating a fine line between employees and contractors—we did have regular assignments, we did have our own desks, and working from home wasn’t acceptable—in short, most of the things that would cause the IRS to classify one as a regular employee. But in a crap economy, who’s going to report this? Office culture He is shrewd and cheap and I recommend staying away from Cheezburger HQ if you value your sanity and pocket book… The co-workers at Cheezburger are fun, cool people, but Huh and his wife (who is the HR Manager), have a stifling presence in the office and aren’t shy about letting you know whether or not you’re in good or poor favor with them. Someone else: We are expected to be available at all hours, work off the clock and receive very few benefits. Didn’t work for the company: I know someone who interviewed for one of their open jobs. Minimum wage, no benefits, a surprisingly hostile interview that asked what the applicant’s “biggest fail” was without also asking them to describe their career successes, might have been a cute reference to failblog but came off like a retail job “personality” test question. The office was a bunch of workers crammed together at long high school cafeteria-looking tables, not even a cubefarm’s worth of personal space. Happy camper enjoys coworkers, lack of feces and punching: 1. Do I feel exploited, no; 2. Do I work a lot, yes… I love my job, I like coming in to work and I love the people I work with…. Reading through the Gawker article didn’t really anger me; I would describe my response as irritated. The irritation stemmed from the over-inflated sense of entitlement the spy had. I worked crappy retail cause I needed to pay rent and my ever expanding bar tabs, those jobs paid worse, had more hazard and conflict and caused a sense of self loathing that will probably never go away (I imagine it’s a similar sensation with herpes)….. Most of my previous work experience was spent drifting from one retail job to then next, trying to avoid cleaning up other peoples feces, getting punched by the elderly and sworn at by children. Hypocrisy (alleged!) Huh is also stingey about giving his employees learning opportunities. Even when there were relevant conferences in the city of Seattle, Huh wouldn’t send his employees, however, he wasn’t shy about bragging to the office that he was flying to San Fran, LA, or New York for the day to do an interview or meet with an investor. If you really want to talk about a slap in the face, you should ask Huh how much money he spent on booze for Fail Blog fans at the FOWA meet-up in London in 2008 and the Fail Blog night in Seattle later that year. Combined, he probably spent more on those parties than what one of his contract employees makes in 6 months. HuhYou ca response The email Huh sent to staff: You can also read the CEO’s comments in this contentious TechFlash thread from February . In it, Huh says he has lost (as of February) only four employees out of 30 in the past two years, counting both voluntary and involuntary departures. That’s not bad considering how little Huh pays at least some of his workers, but it remains to be seen if he’ll fare so well when the unemployment rate falls significantly from the present 10 percent . Lindsay Lohan: Typically Trashy in Purple

We know, we know. When is Lindsay Lohan NOT trashy? Perhaps there was once a time, and there may be again. But it certainly isn’t here in Purple magazine. The alleged actress recently partook in Terry Richardson photo shoot for that publication you probably haven’t heard of, and the pictures are what you expect. Not from the magazine, from which you likely have zero expectations, but what you expect of Lindsay Lohan pictures . Trashy, partially naked, with cigarettes: Lindsay Lohan as you’re accustomed to seeing her . As you know well from seeing Lindsay’s Muse magazine spread (another well-known publication), this is the sort of thing her career comes down to these days. Hey, it’s a niche, and it’s a living. Those bottles of Cristal at the club aren’t gonna pay for themselves. Click to enlarge more sort of hit pics of Linds in Purple … [Photos: Purple]

Miley Cyrus Talks Liam Helmsworth, Taking Time Off From Music

‘He’s very grateful for what he has, but he doesn’t let it go to his head. I’m like that too,’ Cyrus tells Teen Vogue. By Jocelyn Vena Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus At Elton John’s Oscar party on Sunday Photo: Stefanie Keenan/Getty Images for Chopard In the forthcoming issue of Teen Vogue, teen queen Miley Cyrus sits down with her “Last Song” co-star and real-life boyfriend, Liam Hemsworth , to talk about the pair’s instant chemistry with one another, as well as her career future now that she’s bidding the world of Hannah Montana a fond farewell for more adult pastures in flicks like “The Last Song” and her cameo in the “Sex and the City” film sequel. “I think we’re both deeper than normal people — what they think and how they feel,” Cyrus says about Hemsworth in the April issue, hitting newsstands March 16. “He’s very grateful for what he has, but he doesn’t let it go to his head. I’m like that too.” And while his down-to-Earth nature may have stuck with Cyrus, it was his height that initially caught her eye. “He’s really tall. I thought, either I’m going to have to be in heels or standing on something for this entire movie!” she said. “He definitely showed chivalry: I remember him opening the door for the director, and I was like, ‘Wow.’ ” Hemsworth jokingly chimed in, “I have very good parents. It was funny — working with Miley was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be. From the first time we read, it was like I had known her before.” Cyrus is can easily be defined as a “quadruple threat,” but it’s Hemsworth’s focus on just acting that she found most refreshing while shooting the flick. “It’s refreshing to work with an actor who isn’t also a singer and dancer and musician and artist and this and that,” she explained. “I’m sick of quadruple threats who do everything when they should stick to one thing.” Cyrus herself has been hard at work on her next album, but she admitted that music isn’t inspiring her the way it should be. “The more I make music that doesn’t truly inspire me, the more I feel like I’m blending in with everyone else,” she said. “So after this next album, I’m taking some time off.” So, what’s next for Cyrus then aside from “The Last Song” due out on March 31. Easy, lots: “I’m working on lots of different films: drama, action, comedy,” she says of her post-Hannah Montana life . “I like challenges, so I’m doing a little bit of everything.” And that includes a cameo in the hotly anticipated “Sex and the City” flick out in May. “I know everyone says Carrie, but I love Kim Cattrall, so I’ll say Samantha,” she said. “I want to be her because she’s the hottest, she’s funny, and she has attitude.” The new issue of Teen Vogue is on stands March 16. Bill Simmons vs. Keith Olbermann: The War of Words

Earlier this week, Bill Simmons (aka “The Sports Guy”) penned an online column , which argued the following thesis: The eventual comeback by Tiger Woods on the golf course will be more difficult than the in-ring return of Muhammad Ali, following his hiatus from boxing that stemmed from avoiding the Vietnam War draft. It’s a controversial stance, one meant to elicit opinions and one defended by nine well-reasoned points. So, how did MSNBC anchor Keith Olbermann react? By immaturely taking to his blog and writing: If the writer can let me know when Woods is punitively drafted by the military even though he is about eight years older than almost all the other draftees, I’ll begin to take him seriously. In the interim I am again left to marvel how somebody can rise to a fairly prominent media position with no discernible insight or talent, save for an apparent ability to mix up a vast bowl of word salad very quickly. Simmons then Tweeted in response: KO, please know the feeling is mutual. You’re my worst case scenario for my career in 12 yrs: a pious, unlikable blowhard who lives alone. We love any war of words between two outspoken individuals, but must side with Simmons in this case. First, Mr. Olbermann, as long-time readers of The Sports Guy, we can tell you how he rose to his position as the top columnist at ESPN.com: By earning a Master’s in Journalism from Boston University; slogging away for years as a bartender while creating/building his own website; and being discovered by ESPN after he earned a loyal online following. Some journalists may look down on Simmons because he represents the age of new media, in which a writer can thrive on the Internet without ever speaking to an athlete or going inside a locker room for his columns. But such a niche still requires wit, knowledge and hard work. Moreover, Olbermann has risen to his level of notoriety due to a similar recent phenomenon: the opinionated, 24/7 news cycle. Finally, go ahead and disagree with Simmons’ take on Woods vs. Ali. But do it in a respectful manner. A few days ago, Simmons took part in a Podcast with fellow ESPN columnist Rick Reilly because the pair has contrasting opinions on the Tiger Woods press conference . Simmons isn’t afraid to mix it up – professionally, respectfully – with those that don’t share his points of view. But Olbermann was clearly using this Woods’ column as an excuse to bitterly rail against The Sports Guy’s overall success. That’s just petty. Choose a side in this feud:

‘American Idol’ Castoff Haeley Vaughn Says Miley Cyrus Is An ‘Icon’

‘I’m a really big fan of Disney and Disney Channel, so hopefully there’s something there that I can work on,’ she says. By Katie Byrne Haeley Vaughn Photo: Fox Haeley Vaughn’s smile was infectious, but her uneven singing left the “American Idol” judges (and fans) frustrated. After her shaky performance of Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb,” Vaughn was eliminated Thursday, along with Jermaine Sellers , John Park and Michelle Delamor. Will the 16-year-old’s country/pop dreams still come true? We talked to the high-schooler from Fort Collins, Colorado, on Friday (March 5) to talk about that and more. Q : What did you think when Kara suggested you take a year to strengthen your vocal skills? A : I kind of agreed with her. I think that more experience and more time working on my vocals would be good. I think experience is always better, especially since I’m only 16 and this is the first big thing that I’ve done ever. I’ve never performed in front of millions of people before; I’ve never even performed in front of 100. I think it’s always good to get more experience and work on the things that I need to work on. Q : The contestants seem to be particularly nervous this year. Is the anxiety level really high? A : The first week was really tough. We were all super nervous and scared and worried about our song choice. The first week, we were all just freaking out and trying to pick the right songs and make sure America would like them. Nerves are always gonna play a huge factor in what we do on the show. Q : Why didn’t you sing any country songs during your first two semifinal performances? A : The songs I chose, I made them kind of pop/country. I wanted to not have to sing Martina McBride every week just because I wanted to be a country artist. When Carrie Underwood was on her season, she didn’t sing only country songs. She was very versatile, and she chose songs of a different genre and she made them fit her country style. And that was my whole thing that I did too. Q : Do you think the judges have been particularly rough this year? A : Simon was definitely really harsh this season. But, I mean, he has reason to be. … Sometimes he should soften the blow a little bit, but that’s Simon Cowell. He’s been like that for nine years. Q : Are you going to go back to school or focus on your career? A : I’m definitely gonna keep working on my career. I’m gonna keep singing. Hopefully, doors will open up for me. I’m a really big fan of Disney and Disney Channel, so hopefully there’s something there that I can work on. I’m just gonna keep working on my career and doing what I love to do. Q : What kind of career do you see yourself having? A : Miley Cyrus is one of my icons. Oh my gosh, I love her…. Country music is definitely my genre, pop/country. And playing my guitar is awesome. Yeah, if I were given the chance to do that, I would definitely jump on it. Q : Have you had a chance to talk to any “American Idol” alumni to get advice? A : I talked to Allison [Iraheta] for a bit when she came and she performed the first week. And she just told me to stay true to who I am and keep doing my thing and keep doing one genre of music and just be really strong and confident. Were you sad to see Haeley go? Do you think she should have performed some more country songs? Let us know below! Rachel Bilson is Fucking Boring of the Day

Fuck you Rachel Bilson, for seducing me early on in your career, and giving me hope that you’d be naked in movies, or at least in the party scene, feeding my fantasies at least a little, but instead you just got engaged, got boring and mock me with your conservative outfits, when I know under all that bullshit is a pussy that likes to be ravaged…it’s really insulting that she can live the good life off a cocktease….we need to start a revolt and make the bitch regain our trust to deserve our attention…any more of these boring bullshit pictures and I’m going to be forced to start putting all my energy in ruining this girl. First, I will be applying for a restraining order against her because my sex drive feels threatened by her constant boring pictures and then I am going to start a strongly worded petition that every man who likes fucking pussy will sign because this is seriously a waste of a perfectly good vagina…..and then someone should make her Canadian husband from Star Wars cheat on her so she can move on, the only access I have to him is through his sister who my friend fucked on a carpeted apartment floor in Toronto and humiliated her enough to make her hate both him and me, so we need another insider to start sending whores his way…then we’ll get Bilson back where she belongs, only with more emotional damage, something that always makes a bitch more slutty but until that happens, I hate her… Pics via PacificCoastNews

But if you ain’t organized, n—as can come out here and pick and choose. They can take Nipsey, put Nipsey on a remix. Put Kurupt on a remix. They can never pick all of us and say, ‘You all go on a mission. The West Fest Tour. All West Coast n—as go on tour.’ ” Tha Dogg said his latest mixtape is the first of many to showcase up-and-coming talent. ” Volume One is just me bringing awareness to the artists. I have a vehicle to put their sh– out, through people such as yourself,” he told Whoo Kidd. “After this sh– comes out, n—as need to be running to the studio. Now you can be heard and seen.
