Flaming Lips Reveal Guests For World-Record Road Trip

During O Music Awards, ‘Jackass’ star Chris Pontius, Neon Trees and Jackson Browne will join the Lips as they try to land Guinness spot. By Brendan Dempsey Wayne Coyne of Flaming Lips Photo: It’s no secret that the Flaming Lips have their sights set on the Guinness World Record for most concerts performed in multiple cities in a 24-hour time period. The innovative rockers have just announced they will be joined by “Jackass” and “Wildboyz” star Chris Pontius, Jackson Browne, Neon Trees, Karmin and a slew of additional artists as they gun for the record, currently held by Jay-Z, who played seven shows from Atlanta to L.A. in 2006. The Flaming Lips and friends plan to play eight shows from Memphis, Tennessee, to New Orleans, beginning Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET and continuing for 24 hours. The gigs will take place in conjunction with the O Music Awards, a 24-hour awards ceremony that will be broadcast on MTV, VH1 and CMT and livestream at Omusicawards.com. The Flaming Lips will jump aboard their aptly named bus, “Endeavor,” and travel to each new location just as the opening band is finishing its set. They’ll perform what promises to be a raucous and exciting mini-set before moving on to the next location. The O Music Awards ceremony will give out 24 awards, one for each hour of the festival. Categories that artists are vying to win include Must Follow Artist on Twitter, Best Online Concert Experience, Most Adorable Viral Star, Fan Army FTW, Best Music App and Digital Genius Award. “The O Music Awards are all about the celebrating the wonderfully messy and soulful spirit of music,” said Van Toffler, President of Viacom’s Music and Logo Group. “This insane bus brigade and the assorted collection of artists and pranksters that are taking part not only make me incredibly happy, but pretty much sum up what a good 24 hour binge should involve, minus the libations.” Along with the pomp and circumstance of winning awards, the first 12 installments of Stop/Watch will air during the concerts. Stop/Watch is a 60-second online music series in which artists have one minute flat to perform a complete song — with a countdown clock running! The first 12 Stop/Watch artists are: Joseph Arthur, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Citizen’s Band, John Forte, the Hives, Rhett Miller, Miracles of Modern Science, Peasant, Punch Brothers, Saint Motel, P.T. Walkley and the Wombats. Tickets to all of the O Music Awards shows can be purchased here. You can also catch the show live on your smart phone through the mobile web or the MTV News app. Here’s the full lineup of shows:

Kim Kardashian, ‘Glee’ stars, Neil Patrick Harris and more take to Twitter after president’s announcement. By Kara Warner Kim Kardashian Photo: Gareth Cattermole/ Getty Images Despite North Carolina’s constitutional ban of same-sex marriage , the issue’s supporters had reason for celebration Wednesday (May 9): President Barack Obama has officially backed gay marriage . The news became a trending topic on Twitter almost instantly, with the social-networking site’s millions of users — including celebrities — issuing countless tweets of thanks to the president. “Bravo, Mr. President, and thank you,” Neil Patrick Harris a tweeted . The actor is engaged to his longtime partner, David Burtka, and the pair adopted twins together in 2010. “Open our hearts & minds! Proud of Obama for speaking up,” wrote “Glee” actress Dianna Agron , with co-star Chris Colfer tacking his happy thoughts onto those of Ellen DeGeneres: “I second! RT @TheEllenShow: Thank you President @BarackObama for your beautiful and brave words. I’m overwhelmed.” “Star Trek” and “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” star Simon Pegg summed things up succinctly with initials and an emoticon: “GO BO!!! :)” If there were awards handed out for the most LOL-inducing celeb tweet, that would go to “Modern Family” star Jesse Tyler Ferguson , who had a message for the first lady and his partner: “With @MichelleObama & @JustinMikita permission I would like to marry @BarackObama right now!” Even more excited was Kim Kardashian, who had way more than 140 characters to express on the subject, so she took to her website. “This is such a huge step forward in our country’s fight for civil rights and I hope that today this will give hope to so many young people across the country,” she wrote . “We’ve never had a president so supportive of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and today I am proud to be an American!! I’m so happy that our country is making history and moving forward. No more living in the past!”

President Obama Supports Same-Sex Marriage

‘It is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,’ he tells ‘Good Morning America.’ By Kara Warner President Barack Obama Photo: ABC President Obama has officially announced his support of same-sex marriage, hot on the heels of the media storm caused by North Carolina’s constitutional ban of gay marriage , as well as Vice President Joe Biden’s recent comments that he is “absolutely comfortable” with it. Although at times it seemed Obama was reluctant to publicly announce whether he fully supported the issue, instead supporting civil unions, the POTUS made his stance clear in an interview with “Good Morning America” that will air Thursday morning. “I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors, when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me, personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,” Obama told Robin Roberts during the interview. The president went on to say that he is confident more Americans will become comfortable with the idea and cited his daughters’ progressive perspectives on the subject as a primary example. “It’s interesting, some of this is also generational,” he said. “You know when I go to college campuses, sometimes I talk to college Republicans who think that I have terrible policies on the economy, on foreign policy but are very clear that when it comes to same-sex equality or, you know, sexual orientation that they believe in equality. They are much more comfortable with it. You know, Malia and Sasha, they have friends whose parents are same-sex couples. There have been times where Michelle and I have been sitting around the dinner table and we’re talking about their friends and their parents, and Malia and Sasha, it wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently. It doesn’t make sense to them and, frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective.” What do you about Obama’s support of same-sex marriage? Let us know in the comments!

Tom Gabel Comes Out As Transgender: In Praise Of Bravery

Why the Against Me! singer’s decision to live as a woman is also a genuine act of courage, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Tom Gabel of Against Me! Photo: Getty Images Tom Gabel probably didn’t want to be praised for her decision to come out as transgender ; she just wanted to be comfortable in her own body. But I’m going to praise her anyway. Because when Gabel announced to Rolling Stone on Tuesday that she planned to begin living as a woman — after struggling privately with gender dysphoria for years — it was undoubtedly the most personal thing a major recording artist has ever gone public with, an admission that’s sure to make her the target of cruel insults and petty insinuations (to say nothing about what it might mean for the future of her band, Against Me!). But rather than focus on the close-mindedness of a select few, it is certainly more worthwhile — not to mention important — to laud Gabel for what is, in its purest form, a genuine act of bravery. To be fair, Gabel is not the first musician to come out as transgender. In the 1970s, electronic artist Walter Carlos announced that he, too, suffered from gender dysphoria and underwent sexual reassignment surgery to live life as Wendy Carlos. And just last year, Life of Agony singer Keith Caputo made headlines when he became Mina Caputo. But Gabel’s case is different. Since her earliest days, she has always been a punk pariah , criticized for “selling out” at every step of her career. I got the sense this bothered her on some level (how could it not? ), because when I interviewed Gabel in 2006 for AM!’s major-label debut, New Wave, she definitely made mention of it, saying: “There is no pleasing everybody. … I guarantee our new record will get the same reaction that all our records get. Some will be like ‘It’s awesome,’ and others will be like ‘I absolutely hate it.’ But fast-forward a few years, and the ones who said they hated it are the ones who say they loved it all along.” It will be interesting to see how Against Me!’s fans — and detractors — react when Gabel begins living life as Laura Jane Grace, because they definitely can’t accuse her of selling out anymore. If anything, her decision to begin gender reassignment treatments is the most punk-rock thing imaginable: being true to one’s self, being unafraid to be different, speaking out regardless of the repercussions. These are the tenets the genre (and, for what it’s worth, way of life) were founded on — and, really, what they should still be about today. If you have a problem with Gabel’s decision, you’re probably not a punk at all. In coming out as transgender, Gabel will undoubtedly inspire others to do the same. She is proof that the truth is nothing to be ashamed of, that there is nothing as important — or admirable — as living the life you want to, on your own terms, detractors be damned. And the fact that Gabel’s wife, Heather, will remain by her side as she begins this new chapter is not only equally inspiring, but, in the wake of the passage of North Carolina’s Amendment 1 , which made law that only a “marriage between one man and one woman” would be recognized by the state, it seems even more important. Because truly, is there any greater definition of love — or support, or dedication or unwavering union — than what they share? You can quote biblical verses to deny that fact, but really, you’d be missing the point. For years, fans like me have marveled at Gabel’s pained yet poignant lyrics, with their searing desires to break free and find a place in the world (on the standout New Wave track “The Ocean,” Gabel growled, “And if I could have chosen/ I would have been born a woman”). It turns out, it went much deeper than that: Gabel was at war with her own body, and now, finally, she’s found the courage to make peace with that conflict. It’s beyond admirable; it’s downright brave. Like she told me six years ago, “There is no pleasing everybody.” Ultimately, you’ve got to please yourself. And with courage and conviction, Gabel has done that. No matter how you feel about her new life, you can’t deny that it’s everyone’s basic right to live life on their terms. That goes beyond music or politics or religion: It’s humanity, pure and simple. Related Artists Against Me!
