Charlie Sheen To Play President In ‘Machete’ Sequel

Director Robert Rodriguez announces the casting in a tweet. By Gil Kaufman Charlie Sheen Photo: Like father, like son. Charlie Sheen could follow pops Martin into the White House in an upcoming big screen role as the president in director Robert Rodriguez’s sequel to his “Grindhouse” action pic, “Machete.” Rodriguez announced the casting on Thursday in a tweet that read , “I just cast Charlie Sheen in #machetekills as the President of the United States! Who better? More soon…” Sheen retweeted the message, which also included a photo of the “Anger Management” actor leaning his arm on Rodriguez’s shoulder. A spokesperson for Sheen confirmed that negotiations are under way to have him join the film, according to the Hollywood Reporter . If Sheen ends up in the movie, he’ll be the second member of his family to take on the role of command-in-chief, following in the footsteps of Martin, who played the fictional President Josiah Bartlet for seven seasons on Aaron Sorkin’s “The West Wing.” The original over-the-top 2010 revenge fantasy starring tattooed badass vigilante Danny Trejo began life as a fake B-movie trailer in Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s 2007 throwback exploitation flick “Grindhouse.” It featured a galaxy of stars, including Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Cheech Marin and Lindsay Lohan. The sequel will again feature Trejo, Alba and Rodriguez, along with Mel Gibson , Demian Bichir, Amber Heard, Sofia Vergara and Zoe Saldana. Rodriguez announced in a tweet on June 12 that principal photography on the film had begun. The second chapter of a planned trilogy, due out in 2013, finds Machete being recruited by the U.S. government to stop a cartel leader and an arms dealer who have deployed a weapon in space. Catching Fire Casting: Philip Seymour Hoffman in for Hunger Games Sequel?

After inheriting the reins of the Hunger Games franchise from director Gary Ross, Francis Lawrence is making casting moves as the YA series sequel, Catching Fire , comes into view. According to THR, the first new cast addition may be Philip Seymour Hoffman , who has reportedly been offered a key role that will figure into the next two installments in the franchise: New Head Gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee. If you recall, Wes Bentley’s Seneca Crane didn’t fare so well at the end of The Hunger Games, having failed to do his job in allowing Katniss Everdeen to become a symbol for rebellion. His position now vacated, Crane is replaced in Catching Fire by Heavensbee, who has a few surprises of his own to reveal. If you’ve read the books or know what happens in Catching Fire and beyond, the casting of this character in particular is all more intriguing, given what transpires in the plot-heavy next installments. Without spoiling it, I’ll just say this: Seeing someone of Hoffman’s caliber in the role makes Catching Fire (and the trilogy-ender Mockingjay) very promising, indeed. No confirmation yet as to whether or not Hoffman is a go for Plutarch Heavensbee; filming, meanwhile, is set to begin in September. [ THR ]

Iron Man 3 Casts James Badge Dale as Eric Savin/Coldblood

The Shane Black -helmed Iron Man 3 begins filming this month, but Marvel fans are still trying to piece together clues as to who, exactly, Iron Man is going up against in his post- Avengers threequel. The latest casting news doesn’t make it any clearer: James Badge Dale , most recently seen in The Grey and Shame , will play Eric Savin, a soldier known from Marvel lore. But will Dale also portray the character as the superpowered mercenary he transforms into in the comics? Said character is Coldblood, an enhanced robo-soldier who’s reconstructed after a land mine injury. But Variety ‘s report is careful to avoid confirmation that Dale will play Savin as Coldblood in the nanotech-themed sequel, which already has Ben Kingsley in place as its villain. Thoughts on how it’ll all come together? [ Variety ]

Spike Lee’s Oldboy Villain Is Sharlto Copley

All the fuss over Spike Lee ‘s Oldboy remake star search can finally be put to rest, it seems — though who could have predicted that South African actor Sharlto Copley would’ve landed the plum co-starring lead opposite Josh Brolin ? According to Deadline , the District 9 star, most recently seen bursting out of the woodwork every now and then as the manic “Howling Mad” Murdock in 2010’s The A-Team , has nabbed the key role of Adrian Pryce, Oldboy ‘s villain and “a mysterious billionaire trying to destroy the life of Joe Douchett (Brolin).” Bold move, Spike. But does Copley fit the bill (and, more importantly: Can he hold his own against Brolin)? [ Deadline ]

Is Ian Somerhalder Up for 50 Shades of Grey Role?

While visiting Ryan Seacrest’s show, The Vampire Diaries ‘ Ian Somerhalder revealed that he might be “potentially” up for the role of gazillionaire playboy/closet BDSM freak Christian Grey in the big screen adaptation of E. L. James’ breathless erotica 50 Shades of Grey . To which I say: Yes. I’ll allow it. That said, Somerhalder was choosing his words so carefully it’s hard to tell exactly how far in the casting process he might be, so take it with a grain of salt. Oh, and enjoy the mental image of Ryan Seacrest listening to the squirmier parts of the 50 Shades audiobook at the valet stand. Somerhalder is a touch older than the 27-year-old bondage-obsessed hero of the 50 Shades trilogy, but as you can see from his hit CW show he may look 20-something for all of eternity. (Recall his turn in 2002’s The Rules of Attraction , lest ye think he’s just some pretty face from TV.) I still can’t believe they’re attempting to adapt the dirtiest, most melodramatic piece of Twilight fan fic I’ve ever read into a movie. Let’s hope Universal & Focus keep it authentically almost-porny. This movie can’t come fast enough, so to speak. [via Celebuzz ]

Haywire’s Gina Carano Punches Her Way Into Fast & Furious 6

Exciting news for Gina Carano fans: According to a THR report, the Haywire star/former MMA fighter is in talks to join the cast of Justin Lin’s Fast & Furious 6 . Carano would play a member of the Diplomatic Security Agent working under Dwayne Johnson’s agent Luke Hobbs, who was last seen in the post-credits of Fast 5 sniffing out the trail of Dominic Toretto & Co. Details on the plot are still under wraps, but give how the last sequel ended it doesn’t seem too far-fetched to hope for a potential… girl fight , if you will, between Carano’s character and a certain franchise favorite. Do you believe in fighting ghosts? [ THR ]

Ashton Kutcher’s Steve Jobs Receives Awkward Blessing From Apple Co-Founder

Steve Wozniak isn’t really selling me on the most pressing casting issue of our day : “I look at the casting agencies and directors who are experts at casting. I trust that they considered all the relevant factors and made the best selection. The fear that many might have is that Ashton was selected because he’s ‘hot’ right now. But I feel that his selection was done in the most professional manner. And I’m glad that he’s onboard. I think he’ll put a lot into it and that he cares about this particular subject. It’s almost too bad that Steve Jobs is gone. His opinions and guidance, as to the story and film crew and cast would have been invaluable.” [ TMZ ]

Rep Shoots Down Bobbi Kristina Brown Engagement Rumors

Bobbi Kristina Brown is not engaged to Nick Gordon , the 22-year old taken in by Whitney Houston many years ago and raised as one of her own. At least not according to Brown’s rep. Talk of an engagement heated up last week after Bobbi was seen out and about with a massive diamond ring on her finger, but this source tells E! News there’s nothing more to that development than an apparent tribute to her late parent. She’s “simply wearing her mother’s ring,” the Bobbi Kristina insider says . Bobbi, meanwhile, hasn’t talked publicly since sitting down last week with Oprah Winfrey , but she has been communicating via Twitter, retweeting a number of supportive messages, such as: “@REALbkBrown don’t justify to these people. Looks like Whitney was mother and trusted you to protect her greatest treasure BKBro.”

Donald Driver on Dancing With the Stars: Living the Dream, Going All Out!

Green Bat Packers star Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd weren’t among the Dancing with the Stars leaders in Week 1, but they were among the most entertaining. The show hit the casting jackpot with Driver. He may not be the best known or famous NFL player, but he’s a genuine fan of the series. He’s seen every episode! “I’ve been watching these guys, Maks and Derek, since the beginning, so now’s the time to copycat,” he said. In his cha cha with Peta, he definitely tried his best. Their technical aspects needed some work (they scored a 21, five back of Jaleel White ), but they can both really work it for the camera. And they’re hot. Enjoy: Donald Driver & Peta Murgatroyd – Cha-Cha (DWTS Week 1)
