Report: Samantha Barks, Not Taylor Swift, To Play Eponine in Les Miserables Movie

Taylor Swift may have been offered a role in Tom Hooper’s Les Miserables film, but has she recently been replaced? According to Broadway World , theater impresario Cameron Mackintosh, who is also producing Hooper’s film, announced onstage at a curtain call for Oliver! that stage actress Samantha Barks has been chosen to play Eponine — the role he cast her in for the 2010 25th anniversary Les Mis concert. Les Mis purists, you may exhale in 3, 2, 1… According to Broadway World, reports flew in from audience members in attendance: “He told the cast and audience that he had a big announcement to make before flying to America, and then revealed that Barks would be taking the role of Eponine. It seems to have come as a surprise to Barks – audience members reported that ‘the look on her face was priceless.'” The 21-year-old Barks competed on the 2008 BBC reality musical television show I’d Do Anything and played Eponine onstage multiple times previously in London, and she certainly knows the material (see below); she’ll be joining a cast that already includes Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, and Amanda Seyfried. There’s been no word yet on what happened with Swift and her camp, but Mackintosh’s grand gesture in front of a packed house at the Manchester Palace was a pretty public way to break the news. Oh, don’t you worry, Swifties. The busy warbler has a film coming out this year ( The Lorax ) and is bound to pick up another acting gig sooner or later. Sarah Jessica Parker Replacing Demi Moore as Gloria Steinem

If you were put off by the thought of Demi Moore playing feminist icon Gloria Steinem in the currently-filming porn biopic Lovelace , you have the whip-its to thank for this casting change: Sarah Jessica Parker will now step into Steinem’s shoes opposite Amanda Seyfried ‘s titular Linda Lovelace as Moore recovers and, as a press release delicately puts it, “seek[s] treatment for exhaustion.” Just a few more day-playing A-listers and Lovelace will officially turn into New Year’s Eve . Now It’s Daniel Radcliffe’s Turn to Play Allen Ginsberg

James Franco. Hank Azaria. David Cross. Ron Livingston. It’s a broad range of actors who’ve been enlisted previously to play Beat icon Allen Ginsberg, none of them quite delivering the poet’s intellect and spirit opposite the, er, best minds of his generation. Now comes the news that Daniel Radcliffe will take a shot of his own at Ginsberg in director John Krokidas’s Kill Your Darlings . THR today followed up on news originally hinted at by MTV , confirming that the actor — who’s first post- Harry Potter role in The Woman in Black finally surfaces in theaters next month — will star opposite Elizabeth Olsen, Dane DeHaan and Jack Huston. Set in 1944, it revolves around a murder that “draws together the great poets of the beat generation: Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs.” Radcliffe originally hesitated to commit to the project, but is enthusiastic enough. “It’s one of the things that’s on the table absolutely,” he told MTV. “It would be amazing and I’m very, very enthused for that script and that young director. It’s an independent film, it’s welcome to the world of independent film — from one day to the next it could happen or not happen. Until I’m there on the set, I’m not going to say anything about it.” Too late! And here I thought Radcliffe would never wear glasses for a role again. Look for KYD in theaters in 2013, meaning a possible fall 2012 festival run. Developing… [ THR , MTV ] [Photo: Getty Images] Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Lindsay Lohan In Talks to Play Elizabeth Taylor; Who Should Be Dick to Her Liz?

We can all agree that Lindsay Lohan is in dire need of a comeback, and this might just do it — well, it’ll certainly help: Deadline reports that the 25-year-old starlet is in talks to play screen icon Elizabeth Taylor in Lifetime’s biographical romance Elizabeth & Richard: A Love Story . The pic will chronicle the legendary relationship between Taylor and Richard Burton ; no word yet on who’ll play Dick to Lohan’s Liz, which means it’s a perfect time to play a round of Fantasy Casting! I’ll start by throwing a few names out there: – Ed Westwick, who’s vaguely got a young Burton thing going on in his face, but is probably too young to play Burton, who was 7 years Taylor’s senior… – Armie Hammer, because why not? – Sebastian Stan, the underrated sidekick to Chris Evans’ Captain America and, coincidentally, another Gossip Girl alum… mostly because I’m intrigued by the thought of him setting off sparks onscreen with Lohan. Then again, I’d also vote to wait for Martin Scorsese’s take on Dick ‘n’ Liz , based on Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger’s Furious Love … Have any better suggestions? Great Casting or Best Casting? James Franco to Play Pick-Up Artist Mystery in The Game

Happy Friday! As if heading into the weekend wasn’t already wonderful enough, here comes a casting move that oughta keep you tickled for days: According to The Hollywood Reporter, James Franco is in talks to star in Brian Koppelman and David Levien’s The Game , adapted from Neil Strauss’s dating how-to bestseller, in the role of famed, instantly unforgettable pick-up master Mystery. Hollywood can pretty much drop the mic as Friday closes out, because no other casting move this week can possibly top this. If you weren’t familiar with Mystery (born Erik von Markovik), the expert pick-up artiste whom Strauss learned from to write The Game , well, where do I begin? Co-writer of such helpful tomes as The Mystery Method: How to Get Beautiful Women Into Bed and The Pickup Artist: The New and Improved Art of Seduction , Mystery even dallied in reality television in his 2007 VH1 reality series The Pick-Up Artist , in which he taught clueless schlubs how to cast out their lines and reel in the ladies. Also? He looks like this: What? It’s called peacocking! How else can a man stand out from the crowd enough to catch a woman’s eye? Anyway, MGM’s The Game is produced by Chris and Paul Weitz. And I for one cannot wait to see Franco decked out a la Mystery, soul patch and all. James Franco in Talks to Star as Pick-Up Artist in ‘The Game’ [THR]

Demi Moore as Gloria Steinem, the Latest Distracting Casting Move for Lovelace

I can kind of see a resemblance between Demi Moore and feminist activist/journalist Gloria Steinem, whom the former Mrs. Kutcher has been tapped to play in Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s Lovelace . But at this point the porn biopic — the one starring Amanda Seyfried as Deep Throat star Linda Lovelace, to feature a cameo by James Franco as Hugh Hefner — feels like it’s turning into a bizarrely distracting hit parade-sideshow of stars/names playing real life Lovelace acquaintances. (Further evidence, just announced over the wires: Eric Roberts as… lie detector test administrator Nat Laurendi! For reals.) According to a press release, Moore, Roberts, and Adam Brody are the latest cast members to join Lovelace , with Moore’s Steinem turn described by Variety’s Jeff Sneider as just a cameo-length role. Brody, meanwhile, will play porn actor Harry Reems, who co-starred as the doctor diagnosing Lovelace’s unusual condition in the 1972 XXX flick Deep Throat . Raise your hand if you’re ready to see the guy from The O.C. with a porn ‘stache. (*crickets…*) The popularity of Deep Throat and its crazy, mob-financed backstory notwithstanding, Lovelace’s life is rife with rough drama: Her entry into the porn business under the thumb of abusive husband Chuck Traynor (portrayed in Lovelace by the ultimate guy you can’t trust in movies, Peter Sarsgaard ), her later claims that he forced her into prostitution and unwilling sex acts under pain of violence, including in scenes of Deep Throat , and her eventual foray into the anti-porn movement with supporters like Steinem. Based on Eric Danville’s 2011 book The Complete Linda Lovelace , the film’s supporting cast already includes Franco, Sharon Stone, Juno Temple, Wes Bentley, Bobby Canavale, Chris Noth, Robert Patrick, and Hank Azaria; it’d be a shame for Lovelace’s compelling life story to be lost in a cast almost entirely comprised of actors unable to completely disappear into roles. I imagine Big and the T-1000 talking about porn over ’70s shag carpeting. (Okay, okay: Noth plays Deep Throat backer Anthony Romano, while Patrick plays Lovelace’s father.) Anyway, I digress. Filming is currently underway on Lovelace , so here’s to hoping the pic turns out to be as penetrating a biopic as it promises to be. [Press release]

Courtney Stodden and Doug Hutchison Shock the World

We hope you are sitting down, readers. Because the following news is legitimately shocking. Courtney Stodden and Doug Hutchison have turned down a reality TV offer, actually declining an invitation from VH1 to appear on Relationship Rehab . No, seriously. They said no. “Though Doug and Courtney considered the offer, in the end they felt that this wasn’t a perfect fit for the kind of show they wanted to do,” an insider told Radar Online. Relationship Rehab will follow around various couples and provide them with therapists and counseling sessions, which is a significant reason – according to this source – why the pair chose not to appear. Their relationship is supposedly just fine. “There has been a lot of speculation about their marriage and a lot of people are just waiting for the inevitable train wreck to happen, but Doug and Courtney have an incredibly strong relationship and seem very happy together,” the source said. “So doing a show about going into ‘rehab’ just doesn’t make sense for them.” Guess that makes sense. Stodden’s life does rule , after all. [Photo: WENN.com]

Pitbull to Guest Star on Glee?

This has been quite a year for Pitbull, with his solo work and collaborations with Ne-Yo, J. Lo and others burning up all conceivable music charts and airwaves. Next year, it looks like he’s breaking into acting with a high-profile guest spot. TV Fanatic reports that Pit is in talks to appear on Glee as Santana’s brother. Santana came out of the closet to her parents this season, off screen, but her only family member that we actually met was her grandma, who threw her out. No word on whether she and Pitbull’s as-yet-unnamed sibling are close. In other casting news, Glee is reportedly casting Rachel’s gay dads, while Ricky Martin is coming on board as a Spanish teacher in early 2012, and Gloria Estefan is very close to signing on as Santana’s aforementioned mother. So much for the producers’ promise of less stunt casting in Season 3 …

Michael Jackson Biopic May Be in Works; Awesome Bookie Puts Johnny Depp Atop Casting Pool

Among the heap of speculative projects idling in the landfill otherwise known as Hollywood, a Michael Jackson biopic has long been one thought likeliest to be reclaimed. This week, in fact, comes word that the late pop icon’s estate is in discussions with Ivan Reitman’s Montecito Picture Company to nudge such a project forward. Not to be outdone, an Irish bookie with a demonstrated interest in the most outlandish cultural wagers imaginable has commenced casting speculation in an inspired — very inspired — fashion.
