Oh Happy Gays? For Discussion: With The Spotlight On Frank Ocean’s Coming Out, Is Homosexuality Acceptable In Hip-Hop?

Frankly, Frank Ocean even has the gay community talking. While much of the hoopla behind Frank Ocean’s coming out has died down for the hip-hop community, many who are less aware of who he is as an artist have now turned their attention to the significance of his “Thank You” letter that was published shortly before his album debuted this Summer, and it’s meaning for the LGBT community. The subject garnered a long and insightful feature entitled “The Meaning Of Frank Ocean,” which was scribed by one of our contributing writers, Terrance Dean , in the latest issue of The Advocate magazine. (It’s kind of a big deal to have a black man on the cover of The Advocate too). It’s really long but definitely discussion worthy, so we’ve excerpted key portions below: “It was sheer joy because he was the first national well-known artist to come out and announce his sexuality,” says Lloyd Thurston “Gyant” Dinwiddie, referring to Ocean as the first black artist to come out to a hip-hop audience. “Frank Ocean is cemented in music history forever. Anyone who has walked in the LGBT shoes knows that story. His message related to people, and for him it was a weight lifted off his shoulder.” July 4, 2012, marked a declaration of freedom for 24-year-old R&B soul singer Ocean. It was his coming-out party, and we’d all been invited to the virtual parade. His image, that of a serious-looking, handsome young man with a strong jaw line, a short beard, and a short fade haircut, was circulating along with his letter. Those who hadn’t previously heard of Ocean quickly learned that his announcement was significant, and especially significant to watchers of hip-hop. But it wasn’t a shock to everyone. “I was like, What’s the big deal? It’s not like we all don’t know homosexuality exists and has its place in hip-hop,” says Reggie Osse, entertainment attorney, author, former TV executive, and host of The Combat Jack Show. Osse has represented artists including Damon Dash, Missy Elliott, Timbaland, Puffy, and DMX. He was instrumental in helping Jay-Z secure his first recording deal. “I was really happy that Frank Ocean took his life and career into his own hands and made his proclamation,” says Osse. “It’s the first announcement of someone making a statement willingly. But let’s not act like this doesn’t exist.” Before long music celebrities including Russell Simmons, Solange Knowles, 50 Cent, Jay-Z, and Beyoncé began tweeting and posting messages of support for Ocean. Even Odd Future member Tyler the Creator, who’s well-known for his use of the word “fa**ot,” tweeted how proud he was of his brother and friend. It seemed as if the hip-hop industry, which has notoriously been a closed boys’ club that shuns and ostracizes gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people, had experienced a change of heart. Hadn’t Jay-Z, a towering figure in hip-hop, just recently announced his support of marriage equality, following a message of support by President Obama? Jay-Z had seemingly just given Ocean a pass and ushered him into the boys’ club. And not from afar: Ocean had written and performed on Jay-Z and Kanye West’s hip-hop album Watch the Throne. “I’m surprised that a lot of young gay people flocked to him, like he was doing something big,” says gay rapper Deadlee. “My first reaction was like he didn’t do anything. It didn’t seem to me like it was that big of a deal. But then I did research and discovered he was a part of Odd Future, and Tyler the Creator, who is always saying ‘fa**ot this’ and ‘fa**ot that.’ I was like, Whoa! This dude [Ocean] never checked him. Maybe they knew the whole time, and they were taking the word back and not tripping on it.” Reggie Osse, describing homophobia in hip-hop, says, “I had a conversation with rapper Lil B last year. We were talking about the changing values thematically and what these new rappers are doing. However, the old-guard rappers are like Republicans and want things to stay the same. Whereas hip-hop is changing, and many who are born in this culture are taking it to another place. There are some old-school cats who want to keep rap conservative. Some of my friends who are in hip-hop are very adamant that there is no place for gays. They begin quoting the Bible, and they are coming from an antiquated way of thinking.” “I believe in…one’s right to be free,” says legendary rapper MC Lyte. “When we as a community, be it African American, the entertainment industry, or just the block, allow someone’s sexual, political, or religious preference to cloud our ability to see their true spirit, we lose. We lose the opportunity to fully embrace another one of God’s children. Truthfully, no matter how much an individual would love to point out the differences between themselves and another, we are all one.” Ocean may have received support by some influential hip-hop figures. But the list of artists who were not willing to discuss him for this article is revealing. B.o.B., Lupe Fiasco, Trey Songz, Jaheim, and Wiz Khalifa declined to discuss the subject. The representatives for Queen Latifah, Missy Elliott, and Nicki Minaj said their clients were busy and unavailable for comment. “I’m an advocate for those in my family and those who I am close to, and I am an advocate for the homosexual community,” says rapper Murs who recently released a shocking music video for his single “Animal Style.” Both the single and video feature a young man as he struggles with his sexual orientation, and portray the conflict he feels as he begins to date another man. Murs plays his boyfriend. In the video, the two men share a kiss. He explains that he spoke with his wife prior to making the video, and she fully supported him and the concept. Murs faced significant opposition in making the song. “I wanted to do this song for five years, and for five years producers did not want to touch the song,” he says. “They didn’t want to be associated with the subject matter. However, those same producers are now calling me and supporting me and saying they are proud of me.” Murs says he did the video and song to let his gay friends, associates, and fellow rappers know that he was aware of their being closeted and that he still cared for them. “I wanted to give them their moment and let them know that the door is open and I am going to take a stance for them,” Murs says. “And I think with artists like Jay-Z, Frank Ocean, and myself, homophobia in hip-hop will disappear. “Teenagers are killing themselves,” he continues. “We have to stop this because people are losing their lives and getting beat to death. It makes me extremely sad. I can’t watch children die.” Ocean has largely refused to do interviews on this subject, and even in his interview in the British newspaper The Guardian, he doesn’t address the issue of labels. “A lot of people were giving Frank Ocean props and saying that he was letting everyone come into his world, as opposed to coming out,” Deadlee says. “In his letter he never used the word ‘gay,’ and this guy is getting more props for not even using the word or even identifying in his letter. I’m gay and I’m not afraid to use the word. I hope that Frank Ocean comes to the point of not being afraid to use the ‘gay’ word.” Though he doesn’t give his sexual orientation a label in the letter, Ocean does describe relationships with women. “Frank Ocean never said he was gay or bisexual, he just said he was in love with a man,” says Ebony Utley, an assistant professor in communication studies at California State University, Long Beach. “It was others who needed to identify and label him instead of him, and allowing him to do it for himself. Let’s let the man define himself… Besides, he was wise not to say anything beyond his letter, and that’s what he needed to sell his record.” Though the declarations of support for Ocean by 50 Cent and Jay-Z were a milestone in hip-hop, Utley notes, “Frank Ocean is an R&B singer. Let’s be clear, hip-hop hasn’t had its first openly gay artist. No rapper has come out. Honestly, we don’t know what the support will be for an openly gay rapper because one has not come out.” Singer-rapper-songwriter Meshell Ndegeocello wasn’t ashamed to speak about her bisexuality. She was one of the first artists to be signed to Madonna’s record label, Maverick Records, in 1992. Her latest album, Pour une Ame Souveraine: A Dedication to Nina Simone, is due out October 9. On Ndegeocello’s controversial single “Leviticus: Fa**ot,” she spoke candidly about a young man discovering his homosexuality and the rejection from his family. Though a few brave artists have come out, rising above homophobia will require significant effort from the R&B and hip-hop communities, both gay and straight. Ndegeocello acknowledges the difficulty: “I think it’s harder for men,” she says. “Men need a movement. It’s harder to be black, gay, and male. It makes me have the utmost respect for black gay men in an industry of hypermasculinity.” For several years hip-hop has been described as being at a tipping point with regard to homophobia, yet the toppling of a pervasive attitude has yet to be achieved. Frank Ocean hasn’t yet said what it means to be Frank Ocean, but with each significant coming-out, the haters have less standing to insist that LGBTs have no place in hip-hop. What do you think? Did Frank Ocean open the door to gay hip-hop artists being accepted if they come out of the closet, or will it be years before a gay rapper can be open and successful? Please discuss! Gibney, Garbus, Polley and Leto (Yes, Jared!): 10 Toronto Film Festival Documentaries We’re Keen To See

If, like me, you’ve been lamenting the steady bleed of thoughtful, investigative journalism from newspapers and magazines, the Toronto International Film Festival offers hope via visual media.  Scanning the list of documentaries that the festival will be screening, the subject — and the fresh, innovative ways in which the filmmakers are tackling them — calls to mind the original, smart, and, often, great journalism that came from the pages of Harold Hayes’ Esquire magazine in the 1960s and early’70s, arguably, the gold standard of 20th Century magazine writing.  And here are the 10 docs that will have my undivided attention here in Toronto. Now I just have to find the time to see them. 1. Stories We Tell , Sarah Polley:   Initial reports are that the wise-beyond-her-33-years actress and filmmaker has made a stunning auto-documentary by becoming, as she puts it, “a detective in my own life.” Polley — the daughter of the late actress and casting director Diane MacMillan Polley, who died when Sarah was 11, and British actor-turned-insurance-agent Michael Polley — delves into her murky family history to separate fact from fiction. I hear that the answers she unearths resonate like a punch in the gut. 2.  Love, Marilyn , Liz Garbus:  The enduring perception of Marilyn Monroe as a “Candle in the Wind” to use the title of Elton John’s exquisite song, gets an overhaul in Garbus’ close-up of the actress and sex symbol. The Bobby Fischer Against the World filmmaker uses an ensemble of actresses — including Marisa Tomei, Viola Davis, Ellen Burstyn, Evan Rachel Wood and contemporary trouble doll Lindsay Lohan — to give voice to Monroe’s never-before-seen personal papers, diaries and letters which reveal her to be a fiercely ambitious steel magnolia with a poet’s soul. 3.  The Gatekeepers , Dror Moreh: The buzz has been building on this documentary since it debuted on the festival circuit in Jerusalem in July and, according to a couple of sources who’ve seen it, The Gatekeepers is an eye-opening look at the real costs of the Palestine-Israeli conflict told through the unprecedented first-person accounts of six former Shin Bet (Israeli Security Agency) leaders. Word is the film is unflinching, hair-raising and, all the more powerful, because it humanizes the agents who did their government’s dirty work in the interest of homeland security. (Sound familiar?)  As former Shin Bet chief Avraham Shalom says in the film: “In the war against terror, there is no morality.” 4. The Act of Killing , Joshua Oppenheimer, Christine Cynn: That documentary masters Errol Morris and Werner Herzog came aboard as executive producers after seeing this film in various stages of completion should tell you that this is no ordinary documentary. But wait until to you hear its cinematic conceit: Oppenheimer and Cynn filmed Indonesian paramilitary leader Anwar Congo and his cohort — who participated in the murder of more than a million alleged Communists, ethnic Chinese and intellectuals in the 1960s — proudly and chillingly reenacting some of their murders in the style of their favorite movies: westerns, musicals and film noir. This should give new life to the debate over violence in the movies sparked by the Aurora tragedy in July. 5. Reincarnated , Andrew Capper: Capper, the global editor for Vice magazine, chose a compelling subject for his first feature-length documentary: the evolution of pot-loving rapper Snoop Dogg to pot-loving Rastafarian Snoop Lion during a trip to Jamaica to record with the DJ named Diplo. Whether Snoop is merely trying on a new career-rejuvenating persona the way that David Bowie did (multiple times) in the 1970s, or looking for a more spiritual reason to inhale a buttload of chronic, the musical artist born Calvin Broadus has a playful-but-knowing charisma that I bet will play well on camera. I think he’s ready for his close-up. 6. Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God , Alex Gibney: The Taxi to the Dark Side director takes on another powder-keg subject — sexual abuse in the Catholic church — and I hear that fireworks ensue. Gibney begins with the headlines-making case of Father Lawrence Murphy, who beginning in the 1950s, is believed to have molested as many as 200 boys at the St. John’s School for the Deaf in St. Francis, Wisconsin. Although the Vatican was made aware of the priest’s actions in 1963, he was never defrocked and, in fact, was allowed to remain at the school until 1974 (when he was transferred). Mea Maxima Culpa , which translates to “My Most Grievous Fault,” takes Gibney all the way to the Vatican where he scrutinizes the roles that the late Pope John Paul II and his successor Pope Benedict XVI (then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger) played in this tragic tale. 7. Artifact , Bartholomew Cubbins:  Based on the coy picture I found on the Toronto Film Festival’s website,  the Dr. Seuss-monikered director of this film is actually also its subject: actor and Platinum-selling 30 Seconds to Mars front man Jared Leto. (He has used the pseudonym before.)  Since Leto has, so far, defied my predictions that he would be a musical flash in the pan, I’m eager to see whether he can cut it as a filmmaker.  (I like his acting, but let’s say I’m skeptical that he can direct.)   Artifact is about Leto and his band battling their record label Virgin/EMI in court while writing songs for a new album and, according to the TIFF synopsis, “struggling with big questions over art, money and integrity.”  I suspect that droves of pretty young things will want to see this documentary, too, albeit for different reasons. 8. How to Make Money Selling Drugs, Matthew Cooke: With candid assists from Eminem, 50 Cent, Susan Sarandon and other celebrities, Cooke’s directorial debut is getting good word-of-mouth for its satirical Trainspotting -meets- Casino approach to a subject that makes most people’s eyes glaze over: the United States’ ineffectual drug policy. Cooke even employs a video game within the film to make his point. Donkey Bong ? 9. First Comes Love , Nina Davenport: Another auto-doc that taps into the, um, ripe subject of single motherhood as a choice. Unattached at the age of 41, Davenport decided to have a baby on her own — in New York City, no less — and to film the process. I’m hoping that it’s a candid corrective to The Back-Up Plan. 10.  The Central Park Five, Ken Burns, Sarah Burns, David McMahon: I’m not a dedicated fan of Burns. His PBS  Jazz documentary series irritated me, but I get why this particular project, which has been acquired by Sundance Select for distribution, is generating buzz. The subject of this collaborative effort with his daughter Sarah (who wrote a 2011 book about the Central Park Five) and son-in-law, McMahon, speaks volumes about race, crime and politics in New York City. In 1989, five black and Latino teenagers from Harlem were arrested and later convicted of raping a white woman in New York City’s Central Park. They spent between 6 and 13 years in prison before a serial rapist confessed that he alone had committed the crime, leading to their convictions being overturned. UK Horror Fest Takes Heat for Twisted PSA [VIDEO]

Don’t you hate it when you’re trying to enjoy a movie and some inconsiderate asshole refuses to put his (or her) phone away? Us too. But do you hate it enough to stab the offending texter in the neck with a pencil– and then screw the gaping wound in her neck? That’s the message posited by an “indent” (that’s British for “bump”) produced for the UK horror festival FrightFest 2012 , where that exact scenario plays out as a warning for patrons to turn off their phones before the movie starts. Apparently FrightFest wanted to take it up a notch from the Alamo Drafthouse’s famous “no talking” PSAs, which recruit celebrities to give the message and even spun an ejected patron’s irate voice mail into a viral video. But some festival-goers say the spot went too far, causing a firestorm of controversy (or as producers like to call it, free publicity) as horrified patrons called it “misogynist,” “disgusting”, and just plain “excessive.” We think they just didn’t get the joke: the spot was only played once– at a midnight screening of the upcoming Maniac remake ! Do you think the FrightFest PSA goes too far? Do you endorse vigilante justice against movie-theater texters (of which our head writer McBeardo heartily approves)? Let us know in the comments!

Wachowskis, Ryan Gosling, Ben Affleck, And More: 15 High Profile Toronto Debuts Most Likely To Succeed

The Toronto International Film Festival annually boasts one of the deepest and glitziest line-ups of the year, and while there are many under-the-radar discoveries to be made, TIFF can be a very effective launching pad for upcoming studio releases and Oscar hopefuls alike. With Tom Hanks, Ben Affleck , Ryan Gosling , Paul Thomas Anderson , Kristen Stewart , Jake Gyllenhaal , Spike Lee , Keira Knightley , Bill Murray and more bringing films to Toronto, which films and A-listers are set to make the biggest splash at the fest starting tomorrow night? [ PHOTO GALLERY: The 15 Toronto Titles Most Likely To Succeed ] Argo , Ben Affleck Headed to theaters in October via Warner Bros., Ben Affleck ’s third directorial effort is also his most ambitious to date following his strong crime thrillers Gone Baby Gone and The Town . Based on the true story of a joint Hollywood-CIA plot to rescue six diplomats during the Iran Hostage Crisis, Argo boasts a stellar supporting cast – Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Philip Baker Hall, Alan Arkin, Clea Duvall, and Kyle Chandler among them – anchored by Affleck himself as real life CIA operative Tony Mendez. Oscar buzz began last weekend at Telluride , where Affleck earned kudos for his work in front of and behind the camera. The Master , Paul Thomas Anderson Paul Thomas Anderson’s much-anticipated drama has navigated its own unorthodox course of promotion through secret screenings and teaser trailers ahead of its September 14 bow in limited release. ( Read Movieline’s sneak review here .) A highly successful official bow at the Venice Film Festival before a stop in Toronto only shored up more critical support for the period drama, about an ex-seaman (Joaquin Phoenix) drawn into the inner circle of an L. Ron Hubbard-esque figure (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Expect Anderson’s latest to keep riding the wave all the way through awards season and pique interest beyond the art house with its parallels to Scientology . The Place Beyond the Pines , Derek Cianfrance In The Place Beyond The Pines Ryan Gosling – tattooed, blond, and a biker – reunites with director Derek Cianfrance, who captured one of Gosling’s finest and most wrenching performances in Blue Valentine . Here Cianfrance pits Gosling’s vagabond-outlaw motorcyclist against an ambitious young cop (Bradley Cooper) in what Toronto Film Festival artistic director Cameron Bailey calls “a study of vengeance, memory and fate.” Rose Byrne and Eva Mendes (who’s been dating Gosling, ZOMG) also star. If you loved the Baby Goose in Drive , how can you resist? On the Road , Walter Salles Despite mixed reviews out of Cannes , Walter Salles’ adaptation of the Beat generation classic is primed to make a splash upon release this December – mostly thanks to the star power (and, let’s be real, the tabloid power) of Kristen Stewart , whose turn as the wild Marylou marks the beginning of a departure from her well-known Twilight alter ego. But On the Road could also boost the profile of Garrett Hedlund ( TRON ) – and the additional wattage of Kirsten Dunst , Viggo Mortensen , and Amy Adams doesn’t hurt, either. Looper , Rian Johnson Rian Johnson ( Brick , Brothers Bloom ) is back with a sci-fi tale with a twist: Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars underneath a prosthetic Bruce Willis nose as Joe, a “looper” – a hitman who offs targets sent back in time from the future. When he encounters his future self and fails to finish the job, Joe finds himself both hunter and hunted as time runs out. After premiering on opening night of the Toronto Film Festival, Looper will hit theaters on September 28 – a surprising must-see for sci-fi fans.

My name is Hannah and I’m from Manchester in England, UK….

My name is Hannah and I’m from Manchester in England, UK. I’ve been a huge fan since July 2009 but I never EVER thought that I’d be writing a Bieber experience, but on 06/06/2012 at 2:33pm, my dream really came true. It’s the school holidays so we all have a week off, it was just a normal day and I was sat at home on my own, studying, strangely enough I was wearing a Bieber shirt. About 6 months ago, I entered my details online to Radio One (UK) for a show called ‘Star Caller’ where celebrities call their biggest fans (if you’re lucky) I never thought that I had much of a chance, there was like a 1 in 27 million chance of Justin calling me. SO ANYWAY, my phone started ringing, I pick it up and I was like “Hello?” then I hear “Hannah? ” so I was like “Who is it?” (my phone is really quiet, and he sounds SO different on the phone!) “It’s Justin” so I said “It’s Justin?!” Then when he said “It’s Justin Bieber” MY WHOLE BODY STARTED SHAKING.. was this really him? I freaked out & asked him if he was joking, he said “It’s Justin, can’t you tell by my voice?” Then it really hit me that  JUSTIN BIEBER WAS TALKING TO ME ON THE PHONE.  I jumped out of my seat and tried to keep calm, I tensed up my whole body because I knew I’d only have a couple of minutes and I couldn’t blow this one opportunity to talk to him. He asked me a couple things and he knew where I was from, and my age, we talked about school, his new songs, Dan Kanter, my mum(lol) ..he asked me what my favourite song was out of ‘All Around The World’ or ‘Die In Your Arms’, I said Die In Your Arms. I told him that I love ‘Turn To You.’ At one point I told him, “I’m so excited to be talking to you,” he was like, “Aww your excited to talk to me?” ..HE SAID AWW TO ME. I’ve always loved how he says aww to other fans.  Then he just said it to me, how was I still breathing? And yes Justin, of course I am excited to talk to you! :’)  THEN THE BEST PART OF IT WAS WHEN HE SAID TO ME: “I love you!”  I replied with  “I love you so much!”  He said  “I love you, thank you for being my Biggest Fan!”  The fact that he called me his biggest fan made me feel so special, my 3 years of endless support have been noticed, I told him random things like that I was going to camp out for Believe tickets with my mum haha.. then he had to go. When he put the phone down, I literally  collapsed  to the ground screaming..it didn’t seem real, all I could hear going through my mind was Justin telling me he loved me. UNREAL. I called my mum to tell her all about it but I couldn’t even speak, I was CRYING hysterically down the phone, I couldn’t stand up straight. She thought something real bad had happened to me then I managed to squeel out what had just happened, she freaked out too. Then the radio station called me back about 30 minutes later, to talk to me about how I was feeling . By now, I was totally freaking out, everything was slowly sinking in. When Justin called me, my whole mind went blank. I’d planned what I’d say to him if I ever met him but I completely forgot everything. It was an amazing experience. I honestly spent the whole day shaking and crying, I felt like I hadn’t slept for days from so much jumping around and crying. I had to run up and down the stairs a couple of times to calm myself down. Imagine answering the phone and it’s your idol. Wow. IT WAS  THE BEST DAY OF MY WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE, seriously,  NEVER SAY NEVER!  Never give up on your dreams.  Thank you so so so much to Justin for taking the time to phone me, it’s made my life complete!  I wont ever forget this day. -Hannah Go here to read the rest: My name is Hannah and I’m from Manchester in England, UK….

Jessica Alba’s Pants Ruins A Booty Shot

I find Jessica Alba to be one of the most boring celebrities. However, when she turns around and exposes her delicious booty she becomes one of the greatest, most entertaining stars of all time. It’s Jessica’s superpower. Unfortunately, those pants she’s wearing to her Pilates class is like Kryptonite to my nether regions. What happened to good old fashioned sexy leggings? Damn, I hope these don’t catch on. I’ll be out of business in no time.

Amanda Bynes Can’t Hide Her Legs

I find it funny when celebrities try to hide from the Paparazzi. Here is Amanda Bynes covering her face with a shawl. It’s a good thing I couldn’t care less because her face is usually a hit or miss, but one thing is for sure, her legs are always delicious.
