Jon Paul Steuer, Former Star Trek Actor, Dies at 33

Jon Paul Steuer, a former child actor who turned into a successful musician later in life, passed away on New Year’s Day from an unknown cause.  He was 33 years old. Fellow members of the band P.R.O.B.L.E.M.S confirmed this sad piece news via a Facebook post on Wednesday, January 3. It reads as follows: “It is with heavy hearts and saddened minds that we announce the passing of our dear friend and singer Jonny Jewels, AKA Jon Paul Steuer. “The addition of Jonny to our dysfunctional band family was one of the best choices that we have ever made.” “He brought a much needed sense of fun and lightheartedness to everything we did.” The band continued: “He was only with us for a little more than a year, but we managed to cram a lifetime of great experiences into his tenure as our singer.” “Dozens shows at home in Portland and across several states, an amazing European tour, and our best full-length release yet.” Concluded the farewell message: “We’ve lost our singer, but far, far more than that we’ve lost a friend. Rest in peace, Jonny…we love you.” A former child actor, Steuer rose to fame when he portrayed a young Klingon on Star Trek: The Next Generation. He was also know for playing the oldest son of Brett Butler’s lead character on the 1990s sitcom Grace Under Fire. (The photo below is taken from his time on Star Trek.) Steuer also appeared on an episode of the series The Wonder Years and the film Little Giants before landing his best known acting job on the aforementioned NBC show. He left Grace Under Fire at age 12 after three years, in 1996… and promptly retired from acting. In the years since, however, Steuer has occasionally been spotted at Star Trek conventions. The official Star Trek Online Twitter account shared a message in tribute to the late actor on Thursday: “Rest in Peace, Jon Paul Steuer, the first actor to play Alexander in TNG. You will be deeply missed.” He told The A.V. Club website in 2015, regarding his career: “I wanted to forge on with acting after quitting the show, and I went out on a few interviews. “But even then they’d turn into question-and-answer sessions with casting agents about Grace Under Fire.” “I was kind of blown away by how unprofessional people inside the industry were. “It really soured me. I didn’t want that kind of attention.” After leaving the acting world, Steuer performed in rock bands and, a few years ago, even launched Harvest At The Bindery in Portland. The restaurant announced on Facebook on Thursday it will shut down in wake of Steuer’s passing. “Due to an unexpected tragedy, Harvest will be permanently closing our doors,” the post reads. “We thank you for your support and understanding. Jon Paul Steuer R.I.P.” “There will be a memorial gathering for Jonny at Harvest on Sunday 1/7 beginning at 1:00.” View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Died in 2017: In Memoriam Continued the statement released by the establishment, for those interested in contributing to his family during a difficult time: “You can donate to help cover Funeral and Memorial costs here .”  Steuer, seen above when he was 18 years old, is survived by his parents. He will be forever missed by his family and friends. May he rest in peace.

Mackenzie McKee Reveals Mother’s Heartbreaking Brain Cancer Diagnosis

You probably know Mackenzie McKee best for her time on Teen Mom 3, and for her subsequent wild and crazy antics . But today, Mackenzie is in the news for a different, much more upsetting reason … It’s because she just revealed that her mother, Angie Douthit, has been diagnosed with brain cancer. It sounds like the family just got the news on Tuesday — that night, Mackenzie tweeted “Haven’t cried this hard in over ten years. By far the worst night of my life.” A few hours later, she asked “all prayer warriors” to “please pray for my mom.” “What we thought was bronchitis turned out to be 3 masses on her brain, 1 large imone in her lungs and multiple blood clots,” she explained. “We are in shock and devastated. She has brain surgery tomorrow. I’m sick. I’m so sick and want to wake up from this nightmare.” Yesterday, Angie did have the brain surgery, but TMZ reports that things are even worse than they previously thought. Doctors found two more lesions in her brain, as well as multiple masses in her lungs. She’s been diagnosed with stage four brain cancer. The family has made a GoFundMe account to help with the costs of treatment — remember, although Mackenzie was a Teen Mom, the girls from Teen Mom 3 only filmed for one season, and they never made the money the other moms did. In the information for the fundraiser, Angie’s family explains that her tumors “cover almost the entire brain,” and the cancer “started in her lungs with several masses and spread to her brain.” “Angie has always been the healthiest person,” she “doesn’t smoke and never did,” and she also abstains from alcohol, eats organic, and runs marathons, “so this has come as a complete shock to the family.” In an update, it was revealed that Angie will get an MRI and a bone scan today, along with a few other tests, to determine the course of treatments. In another heartbreaking update, Angie herself wrote that her family had given her running gear for Christmas, and “Since I can’t run right now, I challenge all of u to run for me tomorrow believing that I will soon get to run and wear my new things.” Yesterday, Mackenzie shared a collage of photos of her mother on Instagram, calling her “the most amazing woman I know.” “She taught me everything I know. She is the only reason I am the woman I am today. I love you Mom. I’m devastated, I’m angry, I’m shook, I can’t breathe.” “You are everything,” she finished. “Please pray.” In a statement she gave to Us Weekly, Mackenzie echoed the information on Angie’s GoFundMe page, saying “She is the healthiest person I know. Eats healthier than me. Always organic.” “Doesn’t smoke, doesn’t drink, she is a school teacher so she has no money. She runs marathons and works out two to three times a day. This does not run in our family.” “I am so sad,” she continued. “I can barely breathe. I can not lose her.” “She did ask that I blog her whole journey and make a documentary in case something does happen we will always have that. I know God will use her to speak to others.” View Slideshow: Mackenzie & Josh McKee: Teen Mom 3

Hollywood Jesus Dies; L.A. Legend Was 57

Not all Hollywood legends are movie stars. Some are living legends who walk the streets of West Hollywood, dressed as Jesus. Sadly, Kevin Short, the man known as Hollywood Jesus in L.A. and beyond, has passed away. He was 57 years old, and he is mourned by friends and also by complete strangers whose lives he touched. Have you ever heard the Aerosmith song, “Street Jesus,” by any chance? That’s about Hollywood Jesus. He’s also been featured in Lana Del Rey’s music videos. Most often, though, he’s been photographed by and with people walking the streets of West Hollywood. New York has the Naked Cowboy. Hollywood has its share of colorful characters who have become cultural fixtures, but Hollywood Jesus stood above the rest. Sadly, though the world is only now learning this news, Kevin Short (whose name has also been reported as Kevin Lee Light) passed away on December 13th. TMZ reports that he was hospitalized briefly for pulmonary issues beforehand, but unfortunately did not make it. After years as a cultural mainstay up and down Hollywood Boulevard, his death has grieved many who knew, met, or simply knew of him. Many of whom were celebrities. But really, anyone who works and lives in or around Hollywood has some awareness of the man. Those who had met him have taken to social media today to eulogize him: “Rest In Peace…I enjoyed meeting you #HollywoodJesus” Those who knew him best, of course, miss him most: “We all loved Kevin aka Jesus. Such a great guy. Beyond generous and supportive of all the comedians. He was part of The Comedy Store & Los Angeles. He walked almost everywhere, but I always gave him a ride home. I’ll miss him. Our last photo… RiP good friend.” That last photo is this one: Some tried to blend sadness with levity. Normally, we’d question whether that’s tasteful. But maybe that’s just what Hollywood Jesus would have wanted. “# of Jesus deaths under Obama: 0” That’s … that’s fair. “Going to give it three days before i mourn the loss of hollywood jesus.” Honestly, we thought of that joke but kept it to ourselves. From Plastic Martyr to Perez Hilton to Jared Leto, Hollywood Jesus was a frequent companion for selfies and other photos for people with a lot of name recognition. And, as we said, he was even a source of inspiration for some well known musical artists. He also reportedly gave fantastic backrubs. Kevin will always be loved, but now he will be missed. Ellen Page and Emma Portner: MARRIED!

Ellen Page didn’t just flip the calendar to 2018 this week. She flipped her marital status from single to… … MARRIED! The actress took social media followers and fans around the globe by extreme shock on Wednesday night when she confirmed that she recently exchanged vows with girlfriend Emma Portner. “Can’t believe I get to call this extraordinary woman my wife,” the former Juno star wrote on Wednesday, tagging Portner in a post that included one very special photo. The photo featured Page and Portner’s hands, fingers barely touching, wedding rings on full display for all to see. Portner also announced the surprise marriage on her Instagram page, using the same sweet snapshot and writing as a caption:  “@ellenpage I LOVE YOU.” The actress first started sharing photos with Portner on social media over the summer. A teacher at the Broadway Dance Center, the new Mrs. Ellen Page originally hails from Ottawa, Ontario, according to her biography on the dance school’s website. Page and Portner have a number of interpretive dance videos online together, while the newlyweds have also occasionally sang cover songs as a duo. Before romancing Portner, the Oscar nominee went steady with Samantha Thomas from September 2015 to early 2017. In 2014, Page came out as gay at a Human Rights Campaign event in an inspiring speech that earned her a standing ovation at the time. “I’m here today because I am gay,” Page told the crowd, adding: “And because maybe I can make a difference. To help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility.” She concluded as follows: “You have ideas planted in your head, thoughts you never had before, that tell you how you have to act, how you have to dress and who you have to be. “I have been trying to push back, to be authentic, to follow my heart, but it can be hard.” Shortly after making this announcement, Page appeared opposite Ellen DeGeneres on the latter’s talk show and said: “I knew I would be a happier person. I knew that I was gonna feel better and I did not anticipate just how happy I would feel in just every aspect of my life. “Just an ease and a comfort and it’s really been quite extraordinary to feel just the shift. It was pretty much overnight.” View Slideshow: 40 Celebrities Who Are Out and Proud! That’s so wonderful to hear. And so is this news about her marriage. Congrats to Ellen Page and Emma Portner!

Sue Grafton Dies; Beloved Mystery Writer Was 77

For millions of readers, the alphabet now ends with “y.” Perhaps that’s a fitting tribute to a woman who devoted her life to entertaining the masses with perplexing mysteries.  Sue Grafton, the author best known for the Kinsey Milhone “alphabet mysteries” has passed away at the age of 77. She had reportedly been battling cancer. Grafton came to readers’ attention in 1982 with the first Milhone book, A Is for Alibi . It took her five years to write the book, and sales were sluggish at first. Grafton didn’t publish the second book in the series until, B Is for Burglar until 1985. Shortly after the book hit stores, a glowing review in Newsweek forever altered the course of Grafton’s life and career: “It just undid me,” the author said in an interview. “‘Gosh, someone’s paying attention.’ Then I started doing a book a year.” Yes, from 1985 on, Grafton has published a new Milhone mystery every single year. Her latest,  Y is for Yesterday was released in August of this year. In one of her final interviews, Grafton stated that she was looking forward to completing the series: “I think it will be interesting to have a day and a week and a month and a year that isn’t already spoken for,” she said. “The last, actually, 38 years, I’ve known exactly what I’m doing next. And this is a little moment of freedom – if I can come up with a storyline for Z is for Zero , which remains to be seen.” Sadly, readers will never find out what Grafton had in store for the series’ conclusion. Her loved ones say the author abhorred the ideas of ghostwriters and adaptations, and they’ll honor her wishes to be the only one at the helm of the Milhone series. News of Grafton’s passing was made public today, via a loving tribute posted on social media by her daughter Jamie: “I am sorry to tell you all that Sue passed away last night after a two year battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family, including her devoted and adoring husband Steve,” the post reads. View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Died in 2017: In Memoriam “Although we knew this was coming, it was unexpected and fast. She had been fine up until just a few days ago, and then things moved quickly.  “Sue always said that she would continue writing as long as she had the juice. Many of you also know that she was adamant that her books would never be turned into movies or TV shows, and in that same vein, she would never allow a ghost writer to write in her name. “Because of all of those things, and out of the deep abiding love and respect for our dear sweet Sue, as far as we in the family are concerned, the alphabet now ends at Y.” Tributes from tens of thousands of readers have made Grafton one of day’s top trending topics on Twitter.
