About That Time Shia LaBeouf And Tom Hardy Got Into A ‘Tussle’ On The Set Of Lawless

Now that John Hillcoat ‘s brutal Prohibition tale Lawless has hit screens ( read Movieline’s review here ) you can more vividly imagine the testosterone-and-moonshine fueled atmosphere that might have permeated the set, where, as Lawless legend has it, co-stars Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy had an unscripted scuffle. Nevertheless, while making the press rounds Hillcoat and LaBeouf both tried to squash rumors of the brotherly beef. Just a little innocent horseplay gone wrong? LaBeouf and Hardy play Jack and Forrest Bondurant, two of a trio of bootlegging brothers who come to blows with the law (and, sometimes, each other) as they run a moonshine empire out of their hill country home base. A third brother, Howard (played by Jason Clarke) rounds out the sibling dynamic, but it’s the strained relationship between the cardigan-clad family head Forrest and young, headstrong Jack that provides the bulk of the dramatic push and pull. As the story goes, one day on set LaBeouf knocked out Hardy and Hardy “never did that roughhouse stuff with me again.” The tangle first came to light in LaBeouf’s fantastically unfiltered Details interview , though that was, understandably, overshadowed by his revelation about hooking up with Transformers co-star Megan Fox and other assorted truth bombs. Then, while promoting his MMA pic Warrior , Hardy dropped a few cheeky quotes about the incident. “I got knocked out by Shia LaBeouf, actually,” Hardy said to journalists, as recounted by Den of Geek . “In Wettest County , apparently .” Apparently! So now comes Hillcoat to set the record straight. “There was this kind of, like, this challenging brotherly thing that starts going on with him,” Hillcoat admitted in an interview with Yahoo . “But yeah, there was a tussle, but it wasn’t quite the thing that was described.” LaBeouf, who’s yet again spilled so many juicier, more distracting quotes of late — from his acid-dropping Method acting to his embracing of real sex in Lars Von Trier’s Nymphomaniac to his maybe-joke that he got the job by sending in a sex tape — tells MTV that the fistfight was borne out of love. “That was straight love,” he said. “There was a lot of love on that set in general. There was a lot of aggression in me and a lot of aggression on [Hardy’s] side. We were playing brothers. There was a constant finger-in-the-ear [teasing] thing going on for a while.” [ Yahoo , MTV ]

Vanessa Hudgens Grows Up In ‘Rent’ At The Hollywood Bowl

Director Neil Patrick Harris says it’s great to watch the actress ‘allow herself to be so exposed to these people.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Matt Elias Vanessa Hudgens Photo: MTV News “High School Musical” alum Vanessa Hudgens is taking her song-and-dance skills to a brand-new stage. The actress appears this weekend in a Hollywood Bowl production of “Rent,” helmed by Neil Patrick Harris, alongside stars such as Wayne Brady and Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger. The award-winning Broadway smash, which explores the complicated lives of a cast of downtown New Yorkers, is a far cry from the cheery story lines of the “High School Musical” franchise. However, Hudgens said she’s up for mounting the challenging play, which demanded that the cast prepare with only a single punishing week of rehearsals. “It’s been insanity,” Hudgens told MTV News about the grueling schedule. “[The] first two days was [everyone gathering] around the piano and the rest of them [were] just trying to figure out where you are. It’s kind of like, you do it [and then] it’s like, ‘You did it! Great, moving on.’ You’re like … ‘OK, it’s OK, I’ll just figure it out on my own time.’ ” Like “HSM,” “Rent” (which was brought to the big screen in 2005) has a die-hard following. Hudgens, who plays a drug-addicted dancer, has her own take on the play. “For me I think the strongest thing is how my character Mimi finds strength within love,” Hudgens said. “I’m a hopeless romantic, so it gets me every time.” The similarities pretty much end there, as Hudgens acknowledged. “It’s 100 percent different than ‘High School Musical’ because the characters [have] so much more to deal with and [my character goes] through such a massive journey. Each song really shows a different side of the character,” Hudgens said. The actress also credited her director for helping her get back into the musical mind-set. “It’s exciting. Getting back into it has been kind of like a leap of faith, but I know I’m in good hands with Neil.” Harris said witnessing Hudgens’ vulnerability in the play is compelling to watch. “As people get to be older and older, they start disassociating themselves from different types of people. And this ‘Rent’ world sort of does the opposite: It encourages all of that. The diversity that these 25 people have … just fills your heart,” Harris said. “To watch someone like Vanessa open up and allow herself to be so exposed to these people is really great for me as a director to see.” What do you think of Vanessa Hudgens starring in “Rent”? David Banner, 9th Wonder Promise ‘Jamming’ Message Music On Joint LP

Death of a Pop Star is due this summer on Banner’s independent label. By Jayson Rodriguez David Banner and 9th Wonder Photo: MTV News David Banner had the best of intentions. The Mississippi-bred rapper wanted to give away a free mixtape produced entirely by 9th Wonder titled Death of a Pop Star. But when the pair connected in the studio to record, they soon discovered a problem with Banner’s plan: The music was just too good. “When we did the first three songs, we were like, ‘Man, we ain’t giving this jam away,’ ” 9th Wonder, who produced the entire set, told MTV News. “It was like, ‘Man, this is really some good music.’ ” The former Little Brother beatsmith said his and Banner’s chemistry was apparent immediately. “Then about four or five [records] in, we were like, ‘Oh boy, we can’t give this away,’ ” he recalled. The long-in-the-works collection is meant to critique the musical landscape Banner and 9th Wonder come from. According to both men, the idea of hip-hop not speaking to a range of current events left them both frustrated. Banner, in particular, questioned why his generation hasn’t addressed the BP oil spill, for example. The project’s title, Death of a Pop Star, stems from the idea that an artist can no longer become an outsize entertainer in today’s climate, like Michael Jackson or Lionel Richie, who were known for their philanthropic efforts just as much as their hit records. Banner, however, stressed that the music on the project — due this summer on the rapper’s independent label — is more important than the message. “Before the message, before any of the rest of the stuff about this album, this album is jamming,” he said of the collection, which will include collaborations with Estelle and Ludacris. “I want to get that straight. Something we both talked about, you got a lot of political rappers holding up their fists, but they not jamming. You got a lot of people that are killers and they kill for real, but they not jamming. At the end of the day, we need to get back to what this is about, and that’s good music. If you choose to talk about something over a dope beat or dope song, that’s fine. Whatever you choose to do when you get on it, if you have the lyrical depth, it’s about what you decide to talk about.” Are you looking forward to hearing David Banner and 9th Wonder’s collaboration? Stephenie Meyer Wants ‘Breaking Dawn’ Birth Scene To Be ‘Awful’

‘For those of us who have been through childbirth … it is a scary, terrifying experience,’ she tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Stephenie Meyer Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images While Stephenie Meyer’s favorite scene in “Eclipse” was very much on par with that of her “Twilight” fans (the “tent scene” ), she might stand alone with her favorite scene in “Breaking Dawn,” which creeped out a lot of her devoted fans. When MTV News chatted with the best-selling author at the Los Angeles premiere of “Eclipse” last week, Meyer revealed that she is most excited to see the very descriptive and messy “birth scene” on the big screen. “I’d love to have the birth scene be every bit as awful — I know it freaked people out, but for those of us who have been through childbirth a couple times, it is a scary, terrifying experience,” she said. “This is just taking that to an exponential power, and I love going there.” By Meyer’s estimation, another challenging scene for “Dawn” director Bill Condon and company to tackle in their upcoming two films will be the infamous and also fairly controversial/creepy werewolf imprinting. “The imprinting thing, how do you have that come across?” Meyer wondered about Jacob’s relationship with Bella and Edward’s baby, Renesmee . “How do you make it clear what’s going on inside someone that way? It’s a challenge. I think Bill might be up to it, though. He’s really smart and on top of it.” Meyer wouldn’t reveal what she and Condon have discussed for each film specifically, of course, only that she is very happy with his work thus far. “I love his ideas so far,” she said. “He’s had some good ones.” Does the birth scene in “Breaking Dawn” creep you out?
