Cobra Starship Recap MTV’s Musical March Madness Tournament

Who will win the championship: My Chemical Romance or Coheed and Cambria? By James Montgomery Cobra Starship’s Alex Suarez and Ryland Blackinton Photo: MTV News You could call MTV’s Musical March Madness many things (and, in light of Tokio Hotel’s Final Four ousting, their fans already are), but “predictable” is not one of them. This was, after all, a tournament determined entirely by your votes, which meant that, really, anything was possible — a fact we quickly realized when three of the four #1 seeds lost in the opening round (and the fourth lost in the second ). It was a tournament defined by upsets and run by underdogs, be they the Hold Steady or Panic! at the Disco, Patrick Stump or Alice in Chains — or, most notably, Tokio and Coheed and Cambria, two bands who were basically tossed into the tournament at the last minute and made it to the Final Four. In Coheed’s case, they made it all the way to the championship game, where they’ll face off against My Chemical Romance — you know, a band that hasn’t released a new album in, like, four years and is currently without a drummer . Basically, this whole thing made absolutely zero sense. Watching it unfold was a total blast, but attempting to recap the whole thing has seemed nearly impossible. That’s why we turned to a pair of sportscasting legends who know a thing or two about pulling off the impossible — CSPN analysts Dick Bagwell and Vincent Twice — to do the recapping for us. (And yes, we’re aware they look very much like Cobra Starship ‘s Ryland Blackinton and Alex Suarez; we’ll just chalk that up to a coincidence.) With Newsroom blog, we figured now would be a pretty good time to roll out Bagwell and Twice’s tournament recap. Watch it while you vote. Perhaps it will help sway you one way or the other (that Dick is a persuasive guy — trust us). We’ll crown our Musical March Madness champion on Wednesday. Who are you pulling for in the championship game: My Chemical Romance or Coheed and Cambria? Let us know in the comments below! And make your vote count by hitting the Newsroom blog . MTV’s Musical March Madness Final Four Preview: My Chemical Romance

After a hard-won victory over 30 Seconds to Mars, MCR face Muse in the Final Four. By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance Photo: Chapman Baehler/Getty Images/MTV News Who : The last band standing in the certifiably wild West region in MTV’s Musical March Madness tournament , My Chemical Romance have to be considered the favorites to win it all at this point, based on the bands they’ve bested and the help they’re getting from their friends in 30 Seconds to Mars (more on that in a bit). Up until the departure of drummer Bob Bryar , My Chem were one of the few bands in the tournament who could field an actual basketball team (there were five of them) but even when playing a man down, they’re a formidable squad, with the Way brothers running the show from the guard positions, Frank Iero scoring from the wing, and the indomitable inside presence of Ray Toro. Dude can totally dunk. How They Got Here : My Chem’s tournament was really a story of two halves — everything leading up to their Sweet 16 tilt against 30 Seconds to Mars and everything after it. MCR entered the field as a #5 seed and bounced opening-round opponent Gorillaz with relative ease. In the second round, they were pitted against formidable #4 seed Pearl Jam, and to the surprise of pretty much everyone, they positively rolled them, winning 63-37. That set up the now legendary Sweet 16 bloodfest against 30STM, a battle of bands with unyielding, fervent fanbases (the MCRmy and the Echelon, respectively). It was a back-and-forth affair, and in a fitting twist, it ended up tied, with each band grabbing 50 percent of the vote. After more than 50,000 ballots were counted, MCR were declared the winners (by a scant 327 votes). Though defeated, 30STM threw their support behind My Chem, which resulted in them absolutely destroying Panic! at the Disco in the Elite Eight. The Outlook : With the power of 30 Seconds to Mars behind them — not to mention the might of the MCRmy — there’s really no stopping My Chemical Romance, and a trip to the championship game seems a mere formality at this point. It almost doesn’t matter that they haven’t released a note of new music in more than a year or that their still-untitled fourth album has been in the works for nearly as long (or that they might not have a drummer right now). MCR are balanced, determined and tournament-tested. They’ll face off against Muse in the Final Four and, call us bandwagon-jumpers, but we like their chances. Throughout the day, we’ll be breaking down the four bands still standing in MTV’s Musical March Madness tournament. Voting on the Final Four opens Friday (April 2) on the Newsroom blog and runs until Sunday night. Related Photos Who Will Win MTV’s Musical March Madness?! Matt And Kim Call Erykah Badu’s Nude ‘Window Seat’ Video ‘More Than Just Shock Value’

Badu credits duo at beginning of her clip, and talked with them before filming. By James Montgomery Erykah Badu in her “Window Seat” video Photo: Universal/ Motown The first thing that flashes across the screen in Erykah Badu’s “Window Seat” video isn’t a bit of exposed flesh or some wondrously weird background character — it’s a message that reads “Inspired by Matt and Kim.” Erykah Badu’s ‘Window Seat’: Shot By Shot It’s a nod, of course, to the Brooklyn duo’s clothing-optional “Lessons Learned” video ,which saw them dash naked through Times Square and earned them a host of accolades, including the award for Video of the Year at the 2009 mtvU Woodie Awards . Badu’s “Window Seat” clip is sort of like its spiritual cousin, something she acknowledges right off the bat. But it didn’t start there. Before Badu even filmed her video, she reached out to Matt and Kim to discuss her plans for the project — and get their blessing — as Matt Johnson explained to MTV News late Tuesday night. “She’s an artist that I respect and like, and before she made the video I got a call from her and we talked about it for a little bit,” Johnson said. “We talked about the bigger picture she saw … and

Nicki Minaj Goes Big For ‘Massive Attack’ Video

Video premiering Wednesday is dedicated to Lil Wayne, ‘because he’s not here.’ By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Matt Elias Nicki Minaj on the set of her video for “Massive Attack” Photo: MTV News On the set of her video for “Massive Attack,” Nicki Minaj said she wanted to dedicate the production to her musical family, especially the head of the squad, Lil Wayne. “I wanna say shout-out to my baby Wayne, because he’s not here,” Minaj said, sitting in the video’s pink Lambo a couple of months ago. “This means the world to me, because Wayne was one of the first people that believed in me. He’s not here to see my first video. But he’s here in spirit, obviously. I wanna tell him, ‘I love you very much. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me thus far.’ And to my whole team, Young Money, I love you guys. This is for Wayne and this is for my whole team. Young Money/ Cash Money, we in the building.” “Massive Attack” dropped earlier this week, and the video lands everywhere on Wednesday night (March 31). “I brought my BFF Amber Rose out here,” Nicki said on the set earlier this month. “This is a massive attack. We shot the helicopter scene. Obviously, I had to have a hot-pink Lamborghini. We’re having fun in the car, and we see a freakin’ helicopter chase us. So we get on the walkie-talkie, like, ‘Mayday! Mayday!’ It’s really fashion and beauty shots, and we’re acting like we’re doing something important. “We did a mud scenes that’s gonna be spectacular,” she added. “We did a crawling forest scene that was dope. That was shot at night. It’s just beautiful. The clothes, the ambience, it’s really, really pretty. All the girls that like to play dress-up, they’re gonna love this one. We wanted to make it pretty in the dirt. We wanted to have a very crazy contrast. I didn’t want to do everything clean. I like the dirt. All that pink stuff looks even prettier in the dirt.” “It doesn’t get much bigger than this,” said a shirtless Sean Garrett, who collaborated on the track, on the set. “This is the year we start to take off and take it to another level. ‘Massive Attack’ man, we ain’t playing no games. We had to deliver something incredibly huge for Nicki, because as you know, her personality is enormous and the records that she’s been on in the past have been very, very hot, but very street records. “We wanted to give her something that was global,” he continued. “We wanted to give her something that was urban; we wanted to give her something that was mainstream pop, you know what I mean, that the world could get a chance to see her out on this pedestal. And of course, you know, I had to come along with her, because I’ve got an album dropping soon.” “I’m glad she’s a part of us, part of our team,” the Birdman said on set, adding that as Nicki continues blow up, the door will open for more of her female peers. “You gotta be solid built for this, if you want it for a long time,” Birdman said. “I think you will see more women now, though. I think it’s needed. The women bring a different vibe to hip-hop. I think it’s needed; women bring more women.” Nicki is still working on her debut album, which has no release date or title as of yet. Related Artists Nicki Minaj

MTV’s Musical March Madness Reaches The Elite Eight

My Chemical Romance outlast 30 Seconds to Mars, in Bigger Than the Sound ‘s bracketology! By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic When historians look back on MTV News’ inaugural Musical March Madness tournament, they will undoubtedly focus on the Sweet 16 matchup between My Chemical Romance and 30 Seconds to Mars (well, either that or Linkin Park ‘s rather erroneous omission from the entire field of 65). It was, to borrow a few catchphrases, a clash of the titans, a barn-burner, a good old-fashioned slobberknocker: Two of the biggest bands on the planet — with two of the most rabid fanbases, the MCRmy and the Echelon — squaring off for a spot in the Elite Eight. It was like Duke/ North Carolina, Ohio State/ Michigan, Israel University/ Palestine Tech, only bloodier, more venomous. It was a match for the ages. Votes poured in by the bucket load. Both bands led for extended periods of time, fell behind, then surged into the lead again, thanks to some rather creative campaigning (30STM imploring fans to vote from their school’s computer labs was a genius touch,) and, perhaps fittingly, when voting closed on Tuesday night, things were tied, with each act grabbing 50 percent of the vote. So, who won? Well, in a contest where more than 50,000 ballots were cast, it came down to just 327 votes, and in the end, My Chem moved on to the Elite Eight. I’m not gonna lie, we’ll miss 30 Seconds to Mars and their fanatic, somewhat insane dedication to winning a fictional championship. But the fans have spoken, and Leto and company will have to wait until next year. So, who will be joining My Chemical Romance in the Elite Eight? You can take a look at our updated bracket here , and voting will open Wednesday afternoon (March 31) over on the Newsroom blog . Let’s get to the results. Midwest In a region highlighted by shocking upsets (#16 the Hold Steady besting #1 Nickelback, #11 Shinedown over #6 Cobra Starship), we’re left with a pretty straightforward final: second-seeded Muse versus fourth-seeded the White Stripes. Both bands handled their Sweet 16 opponents with relative ease — the Stripes thumped Patrick Stump, and Muse rallied to knock off a game AFI — but only one can advance to the Final Four. Who Will Win MTV’s Musical March Madness?! The results: (4) The White Stripes def. (9) Patrick Stump, 70-30 (2) Muse def. (14) AFI, 53-47 So, once again, our final in the Midwest region is #2 Muse v. #4 the White Stripes. To be honest, I’m sort of amazed the Stripes have made it this far. I didn’t think Jack White even knew how to use a computer. West The Wild West continued to live up to its nickname, as it played host to both the MCR/30STM tilt and #14 the Young Veins vs. #15 Panic! at the Disco, a matchup that pitted former bandmates against one another. Sadly — perhaps due to Ryan Ross’ refusal to campaign on behalf of his band — Panic! rolled past the Veins, setting up a final of two bands that haven’t released much new music in recent years but whose fans don’t seem to mind. The results: (5) My Chemical Romance def. (9) 30 Seconds To Mars, 50-50 (OT, MCR won on total votes) (15) Panic! at the Disco def. (14) The Young Veins, 85-15 The West region final is #5 My Chemical Romance v. #15 Panic! at the Disco. Can the Panic! boys’ dream run continue on to the Final Four? Or will MCR continue to flex their muscles? It’s up to you. East I suppose it had to come down to this: 16th-seeded Tokio Hotel, who entered the tournament merely as an afterthought, roll on to the Elite Eight, after finally putting away a testy Vampire Weekend. (True story, VW frontman Ezra Koenig totally tweeted at me to complain about his band’s matchup.) They’ll face off against Owl City, who pasted MGMT. Both bands’ fanatical fanbases will need to up their efforts leading up to the Final Four. The results: (16) Tokio Hotel def. (4) Vampire Weekend, 63-37 (3) Owl City def. (7) MGMT, 62-38 So, our East region final pits #3 Owl City against #16 Tokio Hotel. Surely the Internet will buckle beneath the weight of the vote. South The region that refuses to make any sense reaches perhaps the most (il)logical conclusion possible: #13 Alice in Chains — who outlasted Adam Lambert — going up against #15 Coheed and Cambria, who topped heavily favored Phish. Coheed seem to care about this tournament more than any band left in the field, so I suppose it’s hard to bet against them at this point. The results: (13) Alice in Chains def. (9) Adam Lambert, 65-35 (15) Coheed and Cambria def. (6) Phish, 56-44 The South final is #13 Alice in Chains v. #15 Coheed and Cambria. Someone’s got to win, right? Once again, Elite Eight voting opens Wednesday afternoon and runs until Thursday night over on the Newsroom blog. Vote early, vote often, and perhaps you can help your favorite band advance to the Final Four! Who do you think will take home the Musical March Madness championship? Are you as surprised as we are by the results? Talk about it here! Related Photos MTV News’ Band Bracketology Who Will Win MTV’s Musical March Madness?!
