Wiz Khalifa ‘Went Out On A Limb’ Turning Down Drake Tour

‘I figured I’d try a different method, and it ended up working for me,’ he tells MTV News of opting for his own headlining jaunt instead. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News Wiz Khalifa said he went with his gut when he turned down Drake’s offer to open for him on the Light Dreams and Nightmares outing, instead embarking on his own headlining effort, the Waken Baken Tour. With only a handful of dates left and after a series of sellouts, the Pittsburgh rapper is pretty sure he made the right call, even being named MTV News’ Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010 . “I went out on a limb and went with my gut feeling,” Wiz told MTV News. “It was risky when you go for what you know, but it’s really easy to take the hand from someone. Not saying I didn’t want it or couldn’t use it, but I figured I’d try a different method, and it ended up working for me.” Over the weekend, the “Black and Yellow” MC held court at New York’s Best Buy Theater, where he was joined by his brother in arms, Curren$y, and Big K.R.I.T. for the Hot 97-sponsored showcase. The lanky lyricist said Los Angeles and Phoenix were among the standout shows during his tour, which also featured stops in Chicago, Dallas and Atlanta. Phoenix, however, was the top moment, according to Wiz. “Honestly, it might be weird, but Phoenix, huge reaction out there,” he explained. “Every show was [great]. “It was crazy,” he added. “I felt like I was on TV when I was out there.” Do you think Wiz made the right call in skipping Drake’s tour? Why Sustainable Agriculture is Important to Walmart

Photo credit: Walmart This guest post was written by Beth Keck, senior director of sustainability at Walmart. Walmart customers—whether they live in Chicago or Tokyo—want locally grown fresh produce. Yet, while grocery sales make up more than half our business, we haven’t focused enough of our sustainability efforts toward the food we sell. We’ve set dozens of sustainability goals for the company during the past five years, but only four of our 39 public sustainability goals addressed food…A year ago, we realized we … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Chicago Using GPS-Collared Coyotes to Control Rodents?

Photo via video from WGN-TV Most of the time when a city has a rodent problem, they call in human exterminators. But Chicago seems to be testing out something slightly more… natural. After spotting a coyote running down State Street in Chicago, residents became aware of a project the city is testing out that includes allowing GPS-fitted coyotes to run free in the city specifically for them to gobble up problematic pests like rats, mice and rabbits. Video of the wily coyote after the jump. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Jeremih Says 50 Cent ‘Came Through’ On ‘Down On Me’

R&B singer talks to MTV News about his next possible single. By Jayson Rodriguez Jeremih Photo: MTV News Jeremih was a lonely crooner on his self-titled debut album. For his follow-up, however, the Chicago singer recruited Ludacris for the first single “I Like.” And for “Down on Me,” likely the next single from his new album All About You, Jeremih worked with 50 Cent. Jeremih said he wasn’t trying to hog the spotlight on his first project. “My first album had no features at all,” Jeremih told MTV News. “It was an unintentional thing. Me and Mick [Schultz, his producer] were the only people in the studio, so that’s just how it happened. … So for this album I definitely wanted to collaborate, get in tune with some of the artists, even on Def Jam, ’cause we have the greatest on our label. Luda came through on ‘I Like.’ 50 Cent came through on ‘Down on Me,’ which is a contestant to being my second single.” The pair never met during the recording process, but they finally came face-to-face a few weeks later when Jeremih ventured to the G-Unit offices and played his entire album for 50 Cent. “Thugs and gangsters listening to R&B, and I think they were digging it, genuinely, so it was pretty dope,” Jeremih said. On Wednesday (September 29), 50 also added his vocals to Jeremih’s track “Waiter/ The 5 Senses.” “I’m a 50 Cent fan, even from his G-Unit when he first came out with Get Rich or Die Tryin’ to movies and films and even the little short films he do with his CDs,” Jeremih said. “I think he’s dope.” What other artists would you like to see Jeremih collaborate with next? Mos Def Signs With Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music

Seasoned Brooklyn MC and ‘Lord, Lord, Lord’ collaborator confirms he’s joining Yeezy’s label in latest issue of XXL. By Vanessa Denis Mos Def Photo: Jeffrey Ufberg/ Getty Images Kanye West has expanded his roster again, and like the most recent addition to his G.O.O.D. Music label, Pusha T, the new signing is another familiar face: seasoned hip-hop favorite Mos Def . The Brooklyn MC and West talk about the deal and break down their musical relationship in the October issue of XXL, which comes out on Tuesday and features a Kanye cover story. And Mos Def makes an appearance on West’s G.O.O.D. Friday single “Lord, Lord, Lord,” along with Swizz Beatz, Raekwon and singer Charlie Wilson. Mos’ decision to join G.O.O.D. Music follows the release of his last album, The Ecstatic, on indie label Downtown Records in 2009. The rapper/actor and Kanye first collaborated on the Chicago MC’s College Dropout, for “Two Words,” and then again on “Drunk and Hot Girls” from Graduation. On “Lord, Lord, Lord,” Mos Def opens the slow-moving track. “Cool ruler standing still, sweatin’ through the shade,” Mos says. “He knew those lights only grew bright to fade/ Dead-wrong pageantry, lottery and games/ Sleight of hand provided by extravagant and fake.” With the signing of Mos Def, West continues his movement, pulling in MCs — often with a devoted following outside the mainstream — who come ready to break down creative barriers. Back in July, Pusha wouldn’t confirm or deny that he’d signed with G.O.O.D: “I mean, you know. I been to Hawaii. Hawaii is a nice place. Good music is made down there, ya know. So, yeah, I was there. I can’t say too much about that.” Of course, that’s no longer a mystery. Pusha confirmed to MTV News at this year’s VMAs that he was onboard with Kanye. The only question remaining is who else will be popping up on the bubbling label. What do you think of Kanye bringing Mos Def into his G.O.O.D. Music fold? Tell us in the comments!
