Kanye West ‘Cleveland Show’ Preview Pops Up Online

‘Kenny’ West challenges Cleveland Jr. to Auto-Tune-assisted rap-off in upcoming episode. By Jayson Rodriguez Kanye West and Cleveland Jr. on “The Cleveland Show” Photo: FOX Kanye West by any other name is still not to be messed with. Just ask Cleveland Jr. from “The Cleveland Show.” The animated series’ soft-spoken teen puts the move on a classmate in a clip from an unaired episode circulating online. Things get interesting when Cleveland Jr. finds out his crush is dating the Chicago rapper, who voices his own character. “It’s Kenny sippin’ Henny/ Rhymes slicker than Teflon,” West raps, during a musical confrontation with Cleveland. “The school been high, I’m the black Zac Efron/ And when I meet a shorty, you know we going backwards/ Pulling more tail than my man John Edwards/ Lumpy, chunky, boogie-eating chump, B/ Acting out of place like Hootie singing country/ Leave my girl alone and get your own tenderoni/ Come on, who are we kidding?/ You’re used to being lonely.” Earlier this year, it was reported that West would appear in an episode scheduled to air May 2 on Fox. According to show co-creator Rich Appel, West is a longtime fan of “Family Guy,” for which Appel was co-executive producer. “The Cleveland Show” writers developed a concept for the rapper and pitched it to him, Appel said. West, to their surprise, agreed. The multiplatinum artist, however, is less successful in his animated universe than he is in real life. “Kenny” West is still trying to find his way. In the limited preview, after serving Cleveland Jr. in rhyme, Kenny challenges the youngster to an Auto-Tune-enhanced sing-off, only to discover his counterpart can “sound like a robot” — with no aid. As of press time, the rapper was only scheduled for one guest spot. But Appel told People magazine in March that he would welcome West’s return to the show anytime, heaping praise on the MC for his contributions. “We just recorded him in the booth, and he was fantastic,” Appel said. “Once he read it a couple times through, he just owned the character, which I guess isn’t hard since he was named Kenny West. He said he’d be glad to [be back]. I said we could write him into the next 21 episodes!” What do you think about Kanye’s animated alter ego? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Kanye West

‘American Idols Live!’ Tour Dates Announced

The top 10 will play 49 dates in North America beginning on July 1. By Gil Kaufman Tim Urban Photo: FOX We won’t know who the winner of this year’s “American Idol” is for another month, but superfans can start planning their summer around the “American Idols Live!” tour, which will kick off on July 1 with a show in Auburn Hills, Michigan. The annual trek featuring the show’s top 10 finalists — Didi Benami, Crystal Bowersox, Lee Dewyze, Andrew Garcia, Casey James, Aaron Kelly, Michael Lynche, Siobhan Magnus, Katie Stevens and Tim Urban — is slated to wind up on September 14 at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh. As usual, the finalists will play a grueling schedule of arena dates that will feature solo spots for each, as well as group numbers reprising some of this season’s most beloved tunes. Tickets for the 49-date North American outing are slated to go on sale in most markets on May 15. The “American Idols Live!” tour dates:

‘American Idol’ Shania Twain Night Fits Michael Lynche, Siobhan Magnus

For the first time all year, the judges do not rave about Crystal Bowersox. By Gil Kaufman Michael Lynche on “American Idol” Tuesday Photo: Fox In a season filled with youthful mentors like Miley Cyrus, Usher, Adam Lambert and Alicia Keys, Tuesday night’s (April 27) “American Idol” brought back a country/pop superstar who hasn’t released a new album in eight years. But Shania Twain knows what she’s talking about, since she was a guest judge during the audition rounds and her soft-focus advice to the remaining six finalists helped a few — Michael Lynche, Aaron Kelly and Siobhan Magnus — get back in the thick of the competition, even as long-time front-runner Crystal Bowersox faced her first neutral notices of the finals. First up was barroom rocker Lee Dewyze, who Twain met during the Chicago auditions. He chose “You’re Still the One,” with Twain suggesting he hold off on the guitar at the top and come in more subtly with a piano. Dewyze took her advice, starting off quietly and then rising to sing the everlasting-love lyrics in his signature raspy voice. Admitting it’s one of his favorite songs of all time (really, Dawg?), Randy Jackson said it started out, yes, pitchy but praised Dewyze for finding a way to make it his own by mid-song. “You found your sweet spot,” he said, with Ellen DeGeneres agreeing and saying that Lee’s talent is finding himself in each song. Simon Cowell said Lee picked the absolutely perfect tune from Twain’s catalog but faulted what Kara DioGuardi labeled a smile as a “weird face.” Shania said she was moved by the way Michael Lynche sang “It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing,” reminding him that even though his singing seems effortless, he should remember to imbue it with feeling. Big Mike transformed the tune into a Maxwell-like R&B seduction play, giving the song a gospel flair and throwing in some ear-candy falsetto at the end that brought a tear to Twain’s eye. Ellen compared the emotion Lynche brought to the song to the late great Luther Vandross, and Jackson said Lynche has found his lane as a sensitive balladeer. “I thought the performance, however, was a little bit wet, as if you were in a musical acting out the words,” Cowell said to the rest of the panel’s confusion after agreeing with DeGeneres’ Vandross analogy. “It was a little bit girly for you.” How was construction worker Casey James going to rebound from criticism that he was a bit lazy last week? Encouraging him to let his confidence shine through, Twain was excited about James’ choice of “Don’t.” Sitting on a stool and playing simple rhythm guitar, James sang a straightforward version of the midtempo ballad, stripping away some of his calling-card bluesy grit in favor of a more emotional, mellow rock vibe. “Casey, artists do not hide: the good, the bad, the ugly. They show it all, and that’s what you did in that performance,” said a pumped-up DioGuardi. “And that’s what you did in that performance. You didn’t hide. You didn’t cover it up with guitar. You were vulnerable, you were raw.” Cowell and Jackson also said it was one of the best performances James has given on the show so far, praising him for finally finding his sweet spot. She can do blues and pop, but can season leader Crystal Bowersox do country? MamaSox, who got her guitar signed by Twain during the Chicago auditions, chose “No One Needs to Know,” and Shania said she needed to let the emotion shine through. Backed by simple percussion, lap steel guitar, standup bass and mandolin, Bowersox crooned the tune in a peppy, old-timey country cadence, imbuing it with her particular charm while smiling through lyrics she said she hoped would get her boyfriend to “man up” someday. “Shocker, we don’t like Crystal this week,” Cowell frowned. “It was limp,” he added, comparing it to being forced to listen to a hired band in a coffee shop. “I didn’t feel any conviction from you.” Randy was into the Nickel Creek vibe, even if, like Ellen, he didn’t love the performance. Though Kara said it’s kind of impossible for Crystal to not be good because of her honest nature, she, too, thought it was just OK. Aaron Kelly, 17, has been on the bubble for weeks, and Shania tried to put him at ease about singing “You’ve Got a Way,” telling him to not worry about hitting the notes and just sing the song the way he feels comfortable. Kelly, arguably the most country of the remaining singers, convincingly and confidently sang the expansive ballad, giving one of his most solid performances in weeks. “The amount of emotion and depth that you showed when you sang that song … the maturity you had to embrace those lyrics,” Ellen said. Kelly proved he gets the “Idol” game by explaining that he changed a line about making love because he was singing the tune to his mom, and Kara praised his conviction. “For the first time in weeks, it actually felt sincere, it felt believable,” Cowell said. The final spot belonged to Siobhan Magnus, who went with “Any Man of Mine.” Twain encouraged her to get into the character of a woman who knows what she wants. Though her vocals were typically uneven, Magnus worked the crowd while strutting across the stage in a short flowered skirt and white boots, unleashing a pair of her signature rebel yells to cap off an upbeat performance. Simon, no fan of country music, loved the song, even though he felt the screaming at the end was unnecessary, comparing it to the sounds of a woman in labor. “I loved it!” Randy raved simply, as Kara agreed, saying Magnus was back in the competition. Someone will be sent home on Wednesday night’s show, which will feature performances from Lady Antebellum, Rascal Flatts, Sons of Sylvia and Shakira. She injured her rib during a show Monday and was back on the stage Tuesday night. By Eric Ditzian Rihanna (file) Photo: Jason Kempin/ Getty Images In the midst of her 27-date European tour, Rihanna suffered an injured rib that required a brief trip to an emergency room in Switzerland. The injury took place during Monday’s show in Zurich, according to People. Following the performance, Rihanna was taken to a private clinic. “[She] had an injured rib and went to have it looked at to be sure it was nothing serious, and it wasn’t,” the 22-year-old singer’s rep said. Rihanna continued on with the tour, performing Tuesday night in Lyon, France, and then heading to Marseille for Wednesday’s (April 21) concert. From there, her Last Girl on Earth Tour will weave through Western Europe, hitting countries like Germany and Luxembourg, before jumping over to the U.K. for 13 dates. The European leg of the tour will wrap up June 5 in Madrid. “All is OK and the tour is going great,” her rep said. The Last Girl on Earth Tour will pick back up in the U.S. on July 2 when Rihanna performs in Seattle. That show will kick off a 27-date North American run, which heads north to Canada and then down through Western states like California and Arizona. The Eastern dates will hit cities such as Miami, Boston and New York. The tour finishes up in Chicago on August 25. Ke$ha will join Rihanna on the tour; Nicki Minaj was set to tour with the two women as well, but pulled out earlier this month . “I’m just so excited to be on the same stage as Rihanna,” Ke$ha told us recently. “She’s obviously an incredible performer, singer, woman. So that tour’s going to be so much fun.” Are you excited to see the Last Girl on Earth Tour? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists Rihanna

Crystal Bowersox: From Chicago Hopeful To ‘American Idol’ Front-Runner

MamaSox has had her ups and downs, but the season-nine crown seems to be hers to lose. By Eric Ditzian Crystal Bowersox Photo: FOX As Crystal Bowersox heads into inspirational-songs week on “American Idol,” she’s the one contestant who seems to be rousing positive energy from viewers in the midst of this season of unexceptional singers and humdrum personalities. The “Idol” audience embraced the 24-year-old mother — MamaSox, as she is now known — once she become a crooner-to-watch in Hollywood and has stuck with her through illness, controversy and some killer performances. We first met Bowersox during the auditions in Chicago , the city that also gave us Katelyn Epperly and Lee Dewyze. Dressed in jeans and a suede vest with her guitar strapped to her side, Bowersox sang “Piece of My Heart,” a tune made famous by Janis Joplin. Crystal Bowersox’s ‘American Idol’ Experience “Why did you wear a guitar?” guest judge Shania Twain asked before Bowersox began. “It’s kind of a comfort blanket for me,” she answered, launching into a soulful take on the tune that had Simon Cowell smiling and Kara DioGuardi welcoming her to Hollywood Week. During her brief time onscreen, we didn’t find out much about her. She was ID’d onscreen as a “musician/mom” and walked away from the audition with her young son in one hand and her golden ticket in the other. The contestant who people were talking about most the next day was Katelyn Epperly, and there was little indication that Crystal would soon become the show’s top seed. If anything, she reminded us of season six’s Tami Gosnell, a free spirit with blues in her soul who soared in her audition but was booted in Hollywood Week. Bowersox would not suffer the same fate. To begin, her rock- and soul-flecked rendition of Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman,” had her fellow contestants singing backup vocals from their auditorium seats. While Andrew Garcia’s breakout take on Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” had everybody talking, we still anointed MamaSox as an early front-runner . To finish off her time in Hollywood, Crystal nailed her cover of Sheryl Crow’s “If It Makes You Happy.” “I feel like I can surprise all of you,” she told the judges as they welcomed her into the top 24. “I’m very glad I came.” Bowersox got off to an unremarkable start during the live shows with a harmonica-assisted take on “Hand in My Pocket.” Cowell accused her of sounding like a subway busker. The next week, an illness forced her into the hospital , and her place on the show suddenly became uncertain. Would she recover enough to perform, or would this be the end of Crystal’s run? It turned out to be just the beginning. After a last-minute switch between the men and women’s performances, Bowersox once again took the stage and delivered a beauty: a gospel-tinged version of “As Long as I Can See the Light.” “I feel good,” she said. “I’m a tough cookie.” Did that cookie almost crumble at one point? Later on in the season, during a post-performance chat with the judges, she admitted that she’d been dealing with personal issues. Then last week, Ryan Seacrest said Bowersox was about to quit the show until he talked her out of it. But Bowersox appeared to hit back against that report when she tweeted , “Media is a funny thing. Stretched and skewed and far from the truth.” What actually happened? We’ll likely have to wait until season’s end to get the real story. By that point, will America have crowned Bowersox as season nine’s champ? All signs are pointing in that direction, but one never knows when it comes to the allegiances of the voting public. For every front-runner who wins, like season four’s Carrie Underwood, there’s a Melinda Doolittle, who seemed set to run away with season six until ultimately placing third. What do you think of Bowersox’s “Idol” run so far? Let us know in the comments! Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.
