‘420 Day’: Events Around The Annual Unofficial Celebration

The national High Holiday for pot smokers is a long tradition. Photo: Justin Sullivan/ Getty Images If you notice that some slackers are conspicuously absent from the office on Tuesday (April 20), just look at the calendar for a clue as to why: It is, after all, “420,” the national High Holiday for marijuana enthusiasts from coast to coast. Whether advocating for pot legalization or just taking a day to wake, bake and repeat, “Marijuana Appreciation Day” has turned into an unofficial day of reflection for pot smokers. ( Editor’s note: MTV does not endorse the use of any illegal substances or events that promote their consumption. ) Among the major events commemorating the day is a daylong rally at Denver’s Civic Center Park calling for marijuana legalization, as well as an unauthorized public smoke-out on the campus of the University of Colorado in Boulder that is expected to draw thousands. There is also a large annual gathering at the University of California at Santa Cruz, where thousands get together at 4:20 on 4/20 for a giant smoke-out. The origins of the holiday vary, including suggestions that it’s tied to the penal-code violation in California for marijuana possession or to the amount of chemicals in pot plants, though urban myth has it springing from a group of 1970s teenage potheads in San Rafael, California, called the Waldos who would gather at the same statue every day at 4:20 p.m. to get high. The term began to catch on in the 1990s and has since become shorthand for lighting up, even popping up in movies like “Pulp Fiction,” where all the clocks are set to 4:20. The latest 420 Day comes as a new poll from The Associated Press and CNBC found that 55 percent of Americans oppose marijuana legalization while 33 percent support it, though the figures were very different for those under 30, where 54 percent favored legalization to 39 against. The site CelebStoner.com has listed a number of events celebrating the day, including shows by Snoop Dogg in New York (at the Fillmore), Cypress Hill in San Francisco (at the Warfield), Willie Nelson in Topeka, Kansas (at the Topeka Performing Arts Center) and Sublime with Rome in Los Angeles (at the Palladium). Not at all coincidentally, Cypress Hill’s latest, Rise Up is slated for release on Tuesday, along with new ones from fellow weed-thusiasts the Kottonmouth Kings, Devin the Dude and Nelson. There is also a “420” celebration in Los Angeles that will feature a silent plant auction, music from DJ Crash, cultivation lectures, performances, comedy and music from Lunell, Red Spanky Hayes and others. Milton, Washington will host the Seattle Hempfest 420 Members’ Social at the Cedarwood Dome & Hookah Lounge, described as a 21+ “member’s only evening of music and discussion about the origins of 420, the cultural significance of the number, and the future of cannabis in modern society.” There are also screenings of the “Phish 3D” movie in Boston, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, New York and Washington D.C., and a 420 Film Fest in Calgary, Alberta, which last year honored such cinematic triumphs as “Johnny Appleweed,” “Blaze” and “400 Bowls.” The day’s activity — which happens to coincide with Adolf Hitler’s birthday — comes at a time when medical marijuana use has been approved in 14 states, including Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, New Mexico, Vermont Rhode Island and New Jersey.

Soundgarden Reunite In Seattle For Secret Show

For first concert in 13 years, set list includes ‘Spoonman,’ ‘Outshined,’ other fan faves. By Tom Biro Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell performs in Seattle on Friday Photo: Tom Biro SEATTLE — On Friday night, 13 years after last taking the stage together, the members of grunge-era band Soundgarden reunited in front of about 1,000 fans at Seattle’s Showbox at the Market for a rousing performance that kicked off with fan favorite “Spoonman” and closed with a cover of the Doors’ “Waiting for the Sun.” The surprise performance comes just four months after singer Chris Cornell proclaimed that Soundgarden would return to action . Since that January announcement, the band’s inclusion in August’s Lollapalooza festival in Chicago had been made public, but no additional concert dates had been set. On Thursday afternoon, Seattle radio station 107.7 “The End” began tweeting about the possibility of a “secret” show, and news soon spread that fans on the band’s e-mail list would receive information on when and where it would take place. When word got out that a band going by the name “Nudedragons” (an anagram of Soundgarden) would be playing on Friday night, fans began stalking Twitter and Ticketmaster, awaiting the moment that tickets would go on sale. According to local news reports in Seattle, the available tickets sold out in less than 15 minutes. “That’s Kim. That’s Ben. That’s Matt.,” Cornell informed fans, pointing to his stagemates, halfway through the band’s almost two-hour set, which included a run of more than an hour of nonstop rock before a short break. “And that’s Chris,” responded drummer Matt Cameron, bringing a cheer from the hometown crowd, who appreciated the introductions, though they were hardly needed. “It’s a rehearsal, so if we f— something up, we’re probably going to go through it again,” explained Cornell, just before tearing into “Outshined,” off 1991’s Badmotorfinger. From the fans’ perspective, however, the show appeared to be a rehearsal in name only, with the crowd holding tight to every note, drumbeat and guitar riff sent their way. If the throwing of a guitar symbolizes all things rock and roll, then clearly bassist Ben Shepherd is ready to make a go of it. After tossing his bass in what many hard-core fans recognize as the “end” of the band back in February 1997, it probably won’t go unnoticed that Shepherd did the same thing to close Friday night’s show, in what could be seen as an effort to go back to the way things were — with Soundgarden as the heavy, loud powerhouse that exemplified the early-to-mid ’90s. Friday night’s set list: “Spoonman” “Gun” “Searching With My Good Eye Closed” “Rusty Cage” “Beyond the Wheel” “Flower” “Ugly Truth” “Fell on Black Days” “Hunted Down” “Nothing to Say” “Loud Love” “Blow Up the Outside World” “Pretty Noose” “Outshined” “Slaves and Bulldozers” Encore: “Get on the Snake” “Big Dumb Sex” “Waiting for the Sun” Related Photos Soundgarden In Pictures Related Artists Soundgarden

Lollapalooza 2010 Lineup Includes Lady Gaga, Green Day, Soundgarden

The Strokes, Arcade Fire and Phoenix also headline the August fest in Chicago. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Marco Prosch/ Getty Images Lady Gaga is bringing the Monster Ball to Lollapalooza this August. Hope she’s packing some sunscreen. Early Tuesday morning (April 6), organizers of the granddaddy of U.S. summer fests revealed the lineup for the 2010 edition of Lolla, and Gaga’s name is atop the list, joined by fellow headliners Green Day, the recently reunited Soundgarden, the reformed Stokes, the Arcade Fire and Phoenix. Most of the headliners for the Chicago festival have some connection to Lollapalooza’s past. Lady Gaga was a relatively unknown side-stage performer in 2007; Green Day and the Arcade Fire have both taken the stage at the fest, and Soundgarden were twice a part of the original touring version of Lolla, having played the trek in both 1992 and 1996. Since splitting in 1997, they have not performed live together. The Lollapalooza gig will also be a return to the stage for the Strokes, who have not performed together in more than four years. Joining those headliners on the bill are MGMT, Hot Chip, the National, Erykah Badu, AFI, Grizzly Bear, Spoon, B.o.B., 2ManyDJs, the New Pornographers, the xx and Switchfoot. There are also legends like Jimmy Cliff and Devo, a jam-band or two (Blues Traveler) and even Chicago-area talent, most notably soul belter Mavis Staples. You can view the entire lineup — some 120 artists, with more to be announced in the coming weeks — over on the fest’s official site . Lollapalooza 2010 will be held August 6-8 in Chicago’s Grant Park. Passes are already on sale, though “early bird” packages are long gone. A standard three-day pass costs $215, with special VIP packages running $850. Does this lineup make you want to head to Chicago this summer? Who are you most excited to see? L.E.P/ Bogus Boys Say New Tape ‘Represents The Streets Of Chicago’

L.E.P/ Bogus Boys Say New Tape ‘Represents The Streets Of Chicago’ By Shaheem Reid L.E.P/ Bogus Boys Photo: Bogus Boys This Week’s Main Pick Street Kings : L.E.P/ Bogus Boys Holding It Down For : Chicago Mixtape : Don’t Feed Da Killaz, Vol. 3 Real Spit : The Low End Professionals, L.E.P for short, have been wreaking havoc in Chicago’s underground-rap scene for over a decade. The respect that the Count, Moonie and the under-house-arrest Bigg Rugg have in the streets translates much farther than the Windy City. The night the Mixtape Daily cameras caught up with Count and Moonie, they were partying with Wale, and the group has recorded with the likes of Jim Jones and Young Dro over the years. For the Bogus Boys, though, industry co-signs are cool, but they care most about the love in the ‘hood. “We been together 12 years,” Count said, standing next to Moonie in front of the now-closed (but still legendary) Cabrini-Green projects. “We been knowing each other for a long time. This is my brother. We had a couple of stop-and-go’s, but we been doing this music for some time. We at our best right now.” Some members of the L.E.P crew have been killed in the street, others sent to prison, but the music hasn’t stopped. “The story needs to be told,” said Count, whose flow is reminiscent of Rakim’s. “Our streets are a little bit different from where y’all at. Y’all need to know about Chicago.” “Get in tune,” Moonie advised. “We’re gonna take y’all on a journey through the city. [The mixtape] represents the streets of Chicago. It’s something new. Something that hasn’t been touched on. That’s what we’re bringing to y’all. Real stuff. We embody the whole situation in Chicago, letting y’all know what’s going on.” Joints to Check For
