Eazy-E ‘Paved The Way,’ MTV’s Sway Calloway Says

Fifteen years after Eazy’s death, MTV correspondent gives us some insight into his friend’s genius. Eazy-E Photo: Ruthless Records The appearance was rebellious, the music was revolutionary, the history is legendary. Eazy-E changed not just what we say in music and how we listen to it, but also the business of hip-hop. Friday (March 26) is the 15-year anniversary of Eazy-E’s death from AIDS complications. Eazy is still loved, and our very own Sway Calloway had the pleasure of calling E a friend. Here, Sway, in his own words, gives us insight into the genius of Eric “Eazy-E” Wright. Independent Thinker Eric “Eazy-E” Wright was a friend of mine. It was a certain appeal about Eazy-E. Little girls liked him. The revolutionaries liked him, because he spoke his mind. He was easy to market, and he had a distinct voice. I met him through his music first, through N.W.A. If you were from the West Coast, it was kinda like you idolized them because they were capable. They did things that other West Coast acts couldn’t do, and we didn’t know why. What was the ideology behind it? But those guys were able to bust through regional boundaries. And a lot of it, I found out later, had to do with Eazy-E Wright’s genius; the dude was a branding genius. He wasn’t necessarily a good rapper, admittedly so. He wasn’t a great producer, admittedly so. He was somebody who knew how to market music, and he knew how to build brands. At the time N.W.A came out, the majority of the music biz was being spearheaded from New York. All the platforms — from media to television to radio — you had to break in New York in order to get national recognition. The only thing was, you couldn’t really get record deals in New York if you weren’t from New York, because you didn’t have that New York swagger or New York accent, and the music business was basically being controlled from the East Coast. So Eazy-E created Ruthless Records, and through independent distribution, he was able to build an underground swell for his company and for N.W.A and create his own audience in a way no one had seen. Man, I remember that dude came to Oakland, California, and N.W.A was on this bill at the Oakland Coliseum that had Eric B. & Rakim, it had UTFO, it had Whodini on it and this group N.W.A, and they weren’t the opening act. And we didn’t understand: “How come they’re not the opening act?” They were just coming out at that time, and we found out later that Eazy-E was actually the promoter of that concert. So what he did by promoting that concert, he brought the other groups that already had brand recognition and audiences and he put his group in front of the same audience. They ripped the stage up, so when people walked away, instantly they knew who N.W.A was. He did that up and down the West Coast, and then he went into regions of the country that the West Coast appealed to, that also had disadvantages in terms of excelling in the music business, like the Midwest, Kansas City, the South, Texas. Then you start seeing companies like Rap-a-Lot Records came out, and they had Geto Boys, MC Breed. All these other artists start coming out from different places other than the East Coast. And even in the Southeast, you saw Luke Skywalker Records, started by Uncle Luke with his group 2 Live Crew. A lot of that was made possible because of Eazy-E’s influence. He kinda paved the way for independent-minded companies to come out and exist in this music business without having major distribution or major marketing budgets behind them. Since then, that’s just been the way of the West Coast. People just came out independent; they didn’t think major. Everlasting Influence What N.W.A did was what hip-hop was always meant to do: It was, as Chuck D put it, the CNN of the streets. So when hip-hop started spreading on a national level, it didn’t do it by mainstream means; it did it by word of mouth. And I think what Eazy-E was able to do was master that ideology in everything that he approached. Whether it was concerts, releasing music or merchandising, he became popular through word of mouth first. He didn’t have P1 stations, which are like the big radio stations in the major market, spinning his records in rotation. But he had the word on the street. And he built an organic swell. That was the way you had the most credibility. That was the way to be heard if you were a rap group back then. It wasn’t through the MTVs that you have now or BETs that you have now. It wasn’t through the major radio stations that you have now, like the Power 106s in LA and KMEL in the Bay or Hot 97s here in New York. It was through the streets. And if you could capture the streets, then you already had a built-in fanbase and that word of mouth spread was the best way to actually get exposure. Because he has independent means of getting his music out through one-stop distribution channels and small distributors like California Record Distributors and City Hall Distribution and George Daniel’s music room in Chicago, he was able to get into the mom-and-pop stores. He took care of the mom-and-pop stores before he took care of the big retail chains. Because of that, he was instantly in the ‘hood. He didn’t need the shine. Unfiltered Defiance One big component to [N.W.A’s] cause was their message. It was raw, gritty, truthful. People could identify with it. They represented a voice that came from the streets that wasn’t otherwise being heard. The key was he learned how to market it. They were called “N—as with Attitudes.” You got a group called N—as with Attitudes? Back then, it was unheard of. Even the name itself was shocking. That was bold, that was cocky, it was pompous. It was also empowering. They talked about police brutality, the government. They talked about things that went on that you wouldn’t know about unless you lived in the ‘hood. Some of it they glamorized, but we could all identify with it. There were girls who acted like “Strawberry, Strawberry.” There were crack-heads. There were dope dealers. There were people killing folks on a day-to-day basis. You weren’t hearing that in music. A combination of all those things is how he was able to sell all those records. It was unheard of. They did timeless things. Classic to me is when, whether it’s persona, music or different forms of art, is when you’re able to capture something in the moment that hadn’t been done. But you do it in a way that transcends geographical boundaries, ethnic boundaries, religious boundaries, and it appeals to everybody across the board. Something in their message still appeals to what we complain about in 2010. How has Eazy-E’s music impacted your life? Share your memories in the comments section below. Related Photos N.W.A. Lady Antebellum Rule Sleepy Billboard Albums Chart

Justin Bieber’s My World EP climbs back into top 10 in anticipation of 2.0. By James Montgomery Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now Photo: Capitol After a one-week absence from the top of the Billboard albums chart, Lady Antebellum will return to #1 on next week’s Top 200, as their Need You Now sold more than 93,000 copies in its eight week of release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That was enough to claim the peak position on an otherwise pretty slow chart week. Gospel artist Marvin Sapp ‘s Here I Am debuts at #2, with sales of more than 75,000 copies. Last week’s champ, Ludacris , follows at #3, as his Battle of the Sexes concept album sold about 61,000 copies. The Edge compilation — a two-disc collection of rock hits from the likes of Puddle of Mudd , Jet and Hoobastank — scored the week’s second-highest bow, selling more than 53,000 copies to land at #4. And chart mainstay Lady Gaga ‘s The Fame is in at #5, with sales of more than 48,000 copies. Rounding out the top 10 are: Sade ‘s Soldier of Love (#6, 40,000), the Jimi Hendrix collection Valleys of Neptune (#7, 39,000), the Black Eyed Peas ‘ The E.N.D. (#8, 39,000), Gorillaz ‘ Plastic Beach (#9, 38,000) and Justin Bieber ‘s My World EP (#10, more than 33,000 copies). Other noteworthy debuts include the White Stripes ‘ Under Great White Northern Lights live album, which sold just under 29,000 copies to land at #11; the Drive-By Truckers ‘ Big To-Do at #22 with nearly 19,000 copies sold, and the Dropkick Murphys ‘ Live on Landsdowne at #25, with sales of more than 17,000 copies. Justin Bieber Manager Arrested For Mall Incident

Police say Scooter Braun failed to tweet fans that an out-of-control November mall appearance was canceled. By Jayson Rodriguez Justin Bieber Photo: George Pimentel/ WireImage Justin Bieber’s manager turned himself in to authorities on Wednesday (March 24) to face charges of reckless endangerment and criminal nuisance, stemming from a scheduled Bieber mall appearance last November that turned into a stampede and injured one fan. Police allege that Scott “Scooter” Braun, 29, failed to properly control the situation at Roosevelt Field Mall in Long Island, New York. A spokesperson for the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office confirmed to MTV News that Braun was in custody. As of press time, Braun — who also manages rapper Asher Roth — was awaiting arraignment before a judge. He faces up to one year in prison if found guilty on both second-degree misdemeanor charges. According to NBC New York , police at the time of the incident ordered Braun to send a message to Bieber’s fans via Twitter to notify his followers that the event was canceled. Fans of the rising teen superstar were waiting for Bieber to arrive at the mall, where he was set to perform selections from his EP My World, which had just been released earlier in the week. Braun, however, refused to send the message, police said. Instead, authorities contend Braun eschewed safety in favor of publicity. As things got out of hand, police said, Bieber’s Twitter still read, “On my way to Roosevelt Field Mall in Long Island, NY to sign and meet fans! I’m pumped. See u there.” After a representative from the singer’s label was arrested, a message from Bieber’s Twitter was sent urging fans to go home. “The event at Roosevelt Mall is cancelled,” he tweeted. “Please go home. The police have already arrested one person from my camp. I don’t want anyone hurt.” The crowd waiting for Bieber turned rowdy when bystanders incorrectly insisted that the singer had arrived, which resulted in a stampede that sent one young female fan to the hospital. An attorney representing Braun dismissed the characterization of events. “Absent Scooter having a Superman’s cape, he couldn’t have [tweeted the cancelation] any faster,” Ravi Batra told NBC. “As a result of his lawful compliance with police instruction, [we believe the DA] will dismiss the charges after reopening the investigation.” Bieber tweeted his support of Braun, who helped develop the singer and introduced him to his mentor, Usher. “You’ve got my total support @scooterbraun,” Bieber tweeted on Wednesday. “Wish you were here in Chicago with us #FreeScooter.” Related Artists Justin Bieber

Does Sad Obama Have Seasonal Affective Disorder? [Sad]

Poor Barack Hussein Obama. Fred Hiatt of The Washington Post thinks he has a “happiness deficit” because he hates his job . But we have another theory: Barack Obama isn’t sad… he’s afflicted by SAD. Seasonal Affective Disorder. Hiatt— overlord of the worst opinion section in America —paints our president in such melancholy hues that you can imagine Hamlet slapping his back with a heartening “Buck up, kiddo.” The problem, Hiatt writes, is that Obama “doesn’t seem all that happy being president.” Hiatt wonders with concern: “What part of it does he enjoy?” Obama bristles at “schmoozing with foreign leaders;” he only reluctantly goes about “rolling up his sleeves and wading into the crowd;” he even prefers a game of basketball to “putting his feet up on his desk after a long day and chewing over events with aides.” Hiatt cites this sad excerpt from a January People interview: President Obama spoke in such a hush about the loneliness of his decisions on war and terrorism that one could hear between his words the tick of an old lighthouse clock across the room. An old lighthouse clock . Symbolic, because lighthouse keepers also hate their jobs. Is Obama just your typical disaffected commander-in-chief, joylessly clocking into the Oval Office each day and googling “retirement communities + greater Chicago area” between meetings? Since we’re playing Presidential psychologist, we’d like to suggest a more clinical explanation for Obama’s recent funk. It’s called Seasonal Affective Disorder, and it afflicts as many as 1.5-9% of adult Americans. Obama’s physical found nothing last month, but the evidence suggests, Contra Fred Hiatt, that Obama’s Happiness Deficit is in fact nothing more than a seasonal deficit of Vitamin D. Obama’s Big Sad Time really began with the death of the public option back in December. It reached its peak with the election of Scott Brown in February. This is the dead of winter! Wikipedia, work your magic: Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), also known as winter depression or winter blues, is a mood disorder in which people who have normal mental health throughout most of the year experience depressive symptoms in the winter . Our seasonally-depressed president has been in no state to weather the normal ups-and-downs of the presidency. The hallowed look in his eyes grew hallower. His hair grew even grayer. He speaks in hushed tones of loneliness and wants nothing to do with other world leaders who would only remind him of his own pain. He’s smoking again, popping Provigil like it was Tic Tacs . Just gotta make it to spring, he probably mutters to himself during a midnight trip to the White House kitchen, another sleepless night, another microwave burrito and endless C-Span marathon… to forget. But spring approaches! We are hopeful that with the sun and the crocuses will come a reborn Obama as his nervous system floods with Sweet Lady Vitamin D. Until that time, though, we have a suggestion that’s probably healthier than cigs and late-night C-Span marathons:

Nicki Minaj, Ludacris, Estelle, More Take Stage At ‘Rip The Runway’

Soulja Boy Tell’em, Trina and more perform on the BET show, airing Monday. By Jayson Rodriguez Nicki Minaj at BET’s “Rip the Runway” Photo: George Napolitano/ Getty Images Nicki Minaj is hip-hop’s leading lady at the moment and the Young Money rapper proved she’s adept at handling that spotlight during her turn as co-host of BET’s “Rip the Runway.” The femcee was joined by The Game’s Pooch Hall, and delivered her trademark sass both in rhyme and in jokes. “Pooch, you haven’t even complimented me on my shoes yet,” Nicki said during the opening minutes, teasing the actor as the pair introduced the show, set to air March 15 on BET and Centric. The Queens lyricist doubled as a performer also, joining Ludacris onstage for his hit “My Chick Bad.” “My chick bad, tell me if you seen her,” Luda rapped. “She always bring the racket like Venus and Serena.” Minaj stormed onstage for the third verse, much to the delight of her fans — there were plenty of Barbiez on board — in a snakeskin bodysuit and pink wig. “Trash talk to them then I put them in a Hefty,” she rhymed. “Running down the court, I’m dunking on them Lisa Leslie.” Along with the “Rip the Runway” performances, new designers’ spring and summer lines were presented and showcased throughout the broadcast. BET’s “106 & Park” co-host Rocsi Diaz, Sean John model Miguel Perdomo and artist Amanda Diva were among those strutting down the catwalk. Upstart MC B.o.B. a.k.a. Bobby Ray performed his first single, “Nothin’ on You,” as the Tennille White Chicago line was showcased. Trina was partnered with Haute Couture during her performance and newcomer Roscoe Dash and Soulja Boy Tell’em had the rowdiest performance of the night, hands down, with “All the Way Turnt Up.” The song was paired with sporty clothing line Prot

President Obama launches plan to overhaul No Child Left Behind. About damn time!

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news , world news , and news about the economy I have to admit I am more than a little apprehensive with the President’s plan. I ma definitely in the camp that sees NCLB as a steaming pile of shit, and it is hard to see ANY changes to hat bill as being bad, but I wonder if what Obama is planning will really do the job of reforming education in this country. Here are some of the features in the President’s education reform blueprint. — By 2020, all students graduating from high school would need to be ready for college or a career. That’s a shift away from the current law, which calls for all students to be performing at grade level in reading and math by 2014. Okay this sounds promising. — Give more rewards — money and flexibility — to high-poverty schools that are seeing big gains in student achievement and use them as a model for other schools in low-income neighborhoods that struggle with performance. I like the idea of rewarding good teachers, and more flexibility will really help teachers to use their creativity to address teaching challenges. — Punish the lowest-performing 5 percent of schools using aggressive measures, such as having the state take over federal funding for poor students, replacing the principal and half the teaching staff or closing the school altogether. No.

Billy Corgan Discusses His ‘Love’ For Jessica Simpson, Smashing Pumpkins Breakup

‘I think if people knew her like I knew her, they would love her like I do,’ Corgan tells Rolling Stone. By Jocelyn Vena Billy Corgan (file) Photo: MTV News While Billy Corgan was mum about his relationship with pop star Jessica Simpson when he spoke to The Chicago Tribune last month, the Smashing Pumpkins frontman was a bit more forthcoming to Rolling Stone about the nature of his relationship with the singer, who recently appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and ex-boyfriend’s discussed John Mayer’s controversial comments about her in Playboy. “If I go, ‘Oh, we’re just friends,’ then it’s like, ‘Did they go out, did he dump her or she dump him, what happened?’ It has nothing to do with any of that. Sometimes people just like being around each other, and good things come out of that,” he told the magazine. “My goal in life is to love whoever I think is worth loving, and I think if people knew her like I knew her, they would love her like I do. It’s really simple.” He had harsher words for his former bandmates in the Smashing Pumpkins. “Rather than break up the band, what I should have done is chuck James [Iha] out,” Corgan explained. “I should have just said to Jimmy [Chamberlin], ‘You go to rehab, and we’ll continue, and James, get the f— out of here.’ Instead, I fell on my sword for James, for what I thought was a friend.” He also opened up about his career now and his ongoing work on the Pumpkins’ Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, a planned 44-track collection he’s gradually releasing over the course of three years via free download from his Web site. “There’s a lot of days where you feel forgotten,” he said. “Do I belong in the conversation about the best artists in the world? My answer is yes, I do. I’ve been too productive for too long, and despite what anybody wants to strip away from me, I am influential. I am. So all the Pitchforks in the world [referring to the popular indie-rock Web site] can try to strip me of every ounce of dignity, but I belong.” Related Artists Billy Corgan Jessica Simpson The Smashing Pumpkins
