Kanye West Protege Mikkey Halstead Working On First Album

‘It’s really going to be done the way I want,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Steven Roberts Mikkey Halsted Photo: MTV News Fire Starter: Mikkey Halsted You would think that if Kanye West produced your demo with beats he hand-selected for you, you would be good to go. Now if that demo somehow found its way into the hands of Cash Money Records CEO Birdman, you’d definitely be topping the charts in no time. As a teenager, Mikkey Halsted was lucky enough to experience both of those scenarios, although things ended up not working out as planned. Hailing from Chicago, Halsted was introduced to Kanye by his sister, Miss Criss, another artist West had been working with in 2001. Criss raved to the producer about her brother’s lyrical skills but it wasn’t until ‘Ye overheard Halsted freestyling that he began to really pay attention. “Just going over to Kanye’s mama’s house, I used to be just kicking it, freestyling,” Halsted explained. “I really wasn’t taking hip-hop seriously at that point. I was into trying to make it to the NBA — I was a ballplayer. We got over there freestyling one time and he was like, ‘Damn, man, you’re really raw for real. Your sister wasn’t lying.’ He was like, ‘Man, take these beats, man, and see what you can do.’ ” Halsted came back the next day with three records finished, and the duo worked on a 15-song demo that made it to the executive offices of Cash Money Records. “This is before Kanye went to the Roc and all that … got to Cash Money, they heard it. They went crazy. They actually tried to get Kanye and me to sign.” Mikkey and his sister both signed and actually went on tour with the label, and although things did not ultimately work out with Cash Money, he built great relationships — Lil Wayne is still one of his good friends. Weezy shouted out Halsted in the October 2008 issue of XXL saying, “If anybody had me really get on my sh–, [it was] Mikkey.” Halsted also learned from the Cash Money work ethic. “I learned the independent game from them and I saw how they grinded. I took the Cash Money grind and applied it to my own situation and with my work ethic. I saw Wayne [work], and me and Wayne kind of came up together in a way,” he said. “All of those things and all of those different people kind of made me who I am today.” After a short stint signed to Jermaine Dupri’s So So Def imprint, Halsted found himself independent again — and relishing it. He hooked back up with Kanye’s onetime mentor and Grammy-winning producer, No ID, and the two have steadily been putting out mixtapes and releasing songs to the hip-hop blogosphere. They are currently working on an independent album called The Darkroom. “It’s really going to be my first album and it’s really going to be done the way I want — the way No ID and I wanted to do it if we didn’t have any label interference,” Halsted said. “But it’s just a good thing. I’ve been through so many different things in a short period of time, so thank God I started as a teenager so, you know, you feel like you matured now, you ready for everything that’s coming.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Well, fans in Phoenix, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles will get the chance to see the cast onstage with Glee Live! In Concert! The show’s stars — including Lea Michele (Rachel), Cory Monteith (Finn), Amber Riley (Mercedes), Chris Colfer (Kurt), Mark Salling (Puck), Dianna Agron (Quinn), Jenna Ushkowitz (Tina) and Kevin McHale (Artie) — are set to sing live starting May 18 in Phoenix, before wrapping up the seven-date trek in New York at Radio City Music Hall. The stars will sing show favorites like “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Somebody to Love,” “Jump,” “Don’t Rain on My Parade” and “Sweet Caroline.” “The response of the fans to our little show has been so immediate and so gratifying, we wanted to get out and thank them live and in person,” show creator Ryan Murphy said. “And what show lends itself more to a concert than ‘Glee’? We can’t wait to take this show on the road, and the actors couldn’t be more excited to perform live for audiences in these four cities.” Michele, who has experience on the Broadway stage, added that the concert will be the best way to end the show’s first season: “This has been such an extraordinary year for ‘Glee,’ and I can’t think of a better way to finish up the first season than performing live onstage with the cast.” The show will be back April 13, with production on season two of the show set to begin shortly after their tour wraps. “This show has changed my life in so many ways,” Monteith said. “If you had told me a year ago that I’d be performing classic-rock songs in concert theaters around the country, I would never have believed you. We are psyched!” Before the stars hit the road, they are expected to perform at the White House Easter Egg Roll on Monday, April 5. Glee Live! In Concert! tour dates, according to Fox:

Nicki Minaj Pulls Double Duty For BET’s ‘Rip The Runway’

MC hosts and performs on show, which airs March 15. By Jayson Rodriguez NEW YORK — With Lil Wayne scheduled to turn himself in to begin his one-year prison sentence on Tuesday, the rapper’s Young Money crew will undoubtedly move into the spotlight as they look to keep their boss’ brand burning hot. Drake is the heir apparent, but YM’s lady of rhyme, Nicki Minaj , has proven she’s just as capable of being a Weezy ambassador. On Saturday night, the female MC entertainingly pulled double duty hosting BET’s “Rip the Runway” with actor Pooch Hall and performing alongside Ludacris . “Pooch, you haven’t even complimented me on my shoes yet,” Nicki said, teasing her co-host as the pair introduced the show, set to air March 15 on BET and Centric. “The Game” actor quickly made amends, christening his counterpart “Sexy Minaj.” She certainly earned the praise: Her hot-pink minidress was hugging her curves like a long-lost relative. The dress was one of many outfit changes for Minaj. Ludacris got the crowd off their feet for the first of many times throughout the night when he kicked things off with his latest single, “My Chick Bad.” “My chick bad, tell me if you seen her,” Luda rapped. “She always bring the racket like Venus and Serena.” Minaj stormed onto the stage for the third verse, much to the delight of her fans — there were plenty of Barbiez on-board — in a snake-print bodysuit and pink wig. “Trash talk to them then I put them in a Hefty,” she rhymed. “Running down the court, I’m dunking on them Lisa Leslie.” Along with the “Rip the Runway” performances, new designers’ spring and summer lines were presented. BET’s “106 & Park” co-host Rocsi Diaz, Sean John model Miguel Perdomo and artist Amanda Diva were among those strutting down the catwalk. Upstart MC B.o.B. a.k.a. Bobby Ray performed his first single, “Nothin’ on You,” as the Tennille White Chicago line was showcased. Trina was partnered with Haute Couture during her performance. Newcomer Roscoe Dash and Soulja Boy Tell’em had the rowdiest performance of the night, hands down, with “All the Way Turnt Up.” The song was paired with sporty clothing line Protege and featured a model in high heels frantically dribbling a basketball to the beat of the horn-laden number. “We alll the waaaay turnt up,” Roscoe sang on the chorus as SB darted back and forth across the stage. ‘American Idol’ Top 12 Men Have A Rocky Live Debut

Casey James emerges as one of only standouts during the boys’ first performance night. By Gil Kaufman Casey James on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: Fox After a number of uneven, forgettable performances by the top 12 ladies Tuesday night, it was starting to feel like Simon Cowell’s prediction that a female would win this year’s “American Idol” was a bit premature. And then the men took the stage Wednesday night (February 24), and for most of the two hours, well, they seemed determined to prove Simon right. From poor song choices to shaky vocals and clear nerves, one by one, the guys got hammered by the judges, with even front-runner Andrew Garcia drawing some fire for his somber Fall Out Boy cover as pinup cowboy Casey James appeared to slip into the pole position with his mix of good looks and strong vocals. First out of the gate was Todrick Hall, one of the most experienced singers in the competition. He took a big chance singing a Chris Brown-y funk take on original “Idol” winner Kelly Clarkson’s breakthrough hit “Since U Been Gone.” He satisfied the judge’s desire to hear something original, and Ellen DeGeneres was visibly pleased, applauding Hall’s stage moves but saying the chorus was a bit of a mess. Randy Jackson actually didn’t love how the arrangement was so different that he almost couldn’t recognize it, and Cowell said Hall came over “as a dancer trying to sing,” docking him for completely “murdering” the song. One of this year’s youngest contestants, spiky-haired 16-year-old Aaron Kelly tackled Rascal Flatts’ “Here Comes Goodbye,” showing remarkable poise and self-confidence as he wrapped his raspy voice around the schmaltzy cowboy ballad. “Bearing in mind it’s your first live show, it actually was quite a good performance,” said Cowell, who suggested that the high-schooler looked a bit embarrassed to be onstage and not confident that he deserved to be in the competition. “You’re a good singer, very likable, very cute, but you have to take control of the song,” he added. Church singer Jermaine Sellers, 27, who almost blew it in Hollywood when he threw the band under the bus, went the inspirational route with Oleta Adams’ version of the gospel tune “Get Here,” busting out some powerful falsetto amid breathy verses. Ellen liked the song choice but said Sellers seemed to be trying too hard, and Randy suggested he go more contemporary with his big voice and try a tune by Ne-Yo or Maxwell instead. Simon likened it to a corny piano-bar song and said the middle section sounded like screaming. “I think you’ve totally blown your opportunity,” he concluded. Tim Urban, 20, revealed that he didn’t even tell his family that he’d made the top 24 after initially missing the cut and then sliding into the 24 spot when Chris Golightly was disqualified , letting them find out only when they watched the final Hollywood Week episode. The floppy-haired Texan went contemporary with OneRepublic’s “Apologize,” strangely staring into the camera and displaying his limited vocal range when he reached too far for the falsetto notes on the chorus and went oddly aggressive on the verses. Cowell congratulated him for coming back. “Having said that, we absolutely made the right decision the first time around by not putting you through with that performance,” he said, calling the performance and vocals weak and Urban’s voice just not good enough. For Randy, none of it worked, and Ellen agreed, saying the high notes were just not there, though people might vote for him because he’s adorable, which she mentioned more than once. One of the least-known semifinalists, California’s Joe Mu

Yung Berg Denies Being Robbed

‘I’m fine; I’m good,’ rapper says in video blog dispelling rumors that he was beaten and robbed in L.A. By Jayson Rodriguez Yung Berg Photo: Neilson Barnard/ Getty Images “Sexy Can I” rapper Yung Berg has taken to Twitter and YouTube to dispel rumors that he was beaten and robbed at gunpoint in Los Angeles last weekend. On Wednesday morning (February 24), TMZ reported that the Chicago-born lyricist was “violently beaten” during a house party after four assailants entered the premises. The gossip site said that Berg and another person were attacked, and the suspects made away with $10,000 in chase and jewelry. But police told MTV News on Wednesday that there was no police report on file that mentioned the rapper (born Christian Ward). Berg himself denied the report on Wednesday afternoon (February 24) in a two-minute video blog he posted on YouTube . The rapper looked directly into the camera and displayed no traces of having been assaulted. “I’m fine; I’m good,” he said. “There’s nothing wrong with nobody. I’m still gorgeous. I love you Mom, thanks you for these good genes.” Young Berg’s reps had not responded at press time to an inquiry made by MTV News, but TMZ reported that a rep for the rapper indicated he wasn’t even in California when the crime was allegedly committed. Instead, Berg was in Las Vegas, and in the YouTube clip he says he’s been there recording music. News of the alleged incident made #YungBergsChain one of the top trending topics on Twitter and Yung Berg became a top Google search term. “Shout out to TMZ,” Berg said in his video. “Thank you for the free promo and publicity — it’s just not the right publicity. I wish I was talking about the album or the mixtape.” The rapper has been subject to numerous robbery hoaxes after reported altercations occurred between the upstart artist and Detroit underground act Trick Trick, and after a separate incident involving Maino. But Berg urged his Twitter followers to dismiss the latest rumors. “PLEASE BELIEVE HALF OF WHAT U SEE,” he wrote in all caps. “AND NONE OF WAT U HEAR!!!! : )” Related Artists Yung Berg
