Briana DeJesus: Does She Want Guns in Classrooms?

While Jenelle Evans doubles down on guns in the wake of the latest mass shooting, Briana DeJesus is stepping up and sharing some much more sensible views. In particular, she’s trashing the idea of arming teachers, and targeting the Florida legislature’s move to do so in particular. In a world where the President is a reality star, it’s not so surprising to hear a Teen Mom 2 star making some salient points about public policy. On February 14th, a tragic and terrible shooting at a Florida high school left 17 dead. The survivors have become a rallying point for common sense gun control legislation. Noting a failure of government leadership, a number of major businesses — starting with Dick’s Sporting Goods — have announced that they’re enacting their own measures. In the mean time, Trump has suggested arming teachers with guns, an idea that’s been widely lampooned online. And the Florida legislature, to the surprise of no one familiar with the exploits of Florida Man and Florida Woman , decided to pour $67 million into a plan to arm teachers throughout the state. Briana DeJesus took to Twitter to speak out: “Stupidest thing ever to give teachers guns … what is the point of safety patrols on campuses then??” She’s referring to school resource officers — police who spend time working security on campuses as a measure that people hope will keep students safer. Briana DeJesus gets very real about the role that racism plays in schools and in countless shootings. “I have a child of color and knowing 10 teachers in her school will carry a gun terrifies me.” With guns everyone, it just takes one racist person on one bad day to end a child’s life. “As a parent I know I won’t be able to protect my kids every second go the day. And I would want their teachers to love and protect like I would.” But Briana lives in real life, not in fantasy land where everyone’s a trained marksman. (Though we should note that many combat veterans have spoken out about how dangerous arming teachers could be) “But giving teachers guns just isn’t right and spending 67 [million dollars] is crazy.” The amount that the legislature was willing to conjure up out of nowhere is a sticking point for many people. “They won’t ever spend 67 million on education but for guns … it’s okay?” Someone challenged her, suggesting that arming teachers — who are not trained to be armed guards and are not paid to be armed guards — would be a great way to protect students. “I’m all for protecting kids but there’s no reason to give TEACHERS guns.” She’s already addressed the expense and the fact that not all teachers would be safe with a gun. But she clearly doesn’t want to argue. “But whatever. Let’s see how this plays out. I hope for the best!” Trump, of course, announced his “policy proposal” just as he announces his other bad ideas — with his little orange thumbs. “What I said was to look at the possibility of giving concealed guns to gun adept teachers with military or special training experience — only the best.” His version of “best” is famously laughable — just look at the turnaround in the White House. “20% of teachers, a lot, would now be able to.” Trump then makes some weird sports analogies that perhaps golf players will understand. A real man of the people. “I want highly trained people that have a natural talent, like hitting a baseball, or hitting a golf ball, or putting. How come some people always make the four-footer and some people under pressure can’t even take their club back, right? They can’t even take their club back.” He seemed to lose himself on a sports tangent. Briana did not mention that even highly trained marksmen are considered to be doing “very well” if they have 40% weapon accuracy in live fire simulations. So even if teachers are having a shootout with some gunman, where are the other 60% of the bullets going? Some of them are going into students. Of course, Trump said that he wanted to take away guns, and then pivoted because he doesn’t actually know what he’s saying at any given time. He now plans to meet with video game executives, because surely those violent video games are to blame, even though Canada and the UK and Australia all play the exact same games without the shootings. Briana didn’t get into all of that. That’s okay — she’s a reality star, not a politician. But even she knows that children don’t need to be around guns. Which is more than we can say for certain people. View Slideshow: Jenelle Evans Lets Toddler Play With Gun in All-Time Low; Could She Lose ALL Her Kids?!

Jenelle Evans: FINALLY Fired From Teen Mom 2?!

Well, the day so many Teen Mom 2 fans have been waiting for may have finally arrived. After weeks of rumors and years of alienating viewers, it's beginning to look as though MTV and Viacom have reached the decision to fire Jenelle Evans from the show that made her famous. Jenelle's husband, David Eason, was fired last month, and just as Evans' army of haters was beginning to use hope that the Carolina Hurricane would also be kicked to the curb, Jenelle started dropping hints that she will not be returning for another season. Join us for a complete rundown of recent developments in the life of the (probably) newly-unemployed Ms. Evans: 1. Come At Me, Fans! For years, Jenelle has been wilfully antagonizing Teen Mom 2 fans. But at the end of the day, she was good for ratings, and as such, producers kept her around. With her latest scandals, however, Jenelle may have finally gone too far. 2. The Night of the Gun It all started when David Eason posted this photo on Instagram. It appeared on his page just after the school shooting in Parkland, Florida that claimed 17 lives. Fans implored David to take it down – and that’s when things got even uglier. 3. Hateful Dave David responded to criticism from fans by going on a homophobic tirade and hurling slurs at followers who dared to suggest it might not be the right time for such a post. Needless to say, that didn’t turn out well for him. 4. A Brief Experiment With Employment Like most Teen Mom baby daddies, Dave wasn’t exactly a top earner before he landed a spot on the show, and now it’s back to the unemployment line. But hey, at least he’ll have company. 5. Trimming the Fat These days, it seems Teen Mom producers are done tolerating diva behavior and are all too aware that there are no indispensable stars on ensemble reality shows. In the past two months, they’ve canned Farrah Abraham and David Eason. And now it looks as though Jenelle’s days as a ratings magnet have come to a close… 6. Farewell, Jenelle Jenelle’s drug use, violent behavior, and apparent neglect of her children have long made her an object of scorn amongst Teen Mom fans. Petitions to have her fired from the show have even been circulated by her own co-stars. And now it looks as though the public will finally get its wish… View Slideshow

Kim Kardashian Eyes Fancy Cars, Fishes For Better Push Present Than Kylie

It looks like those rumors that Kim Kardashian aims to take down Kylie Jenner aren’t going away any time soon. If anything, it looks like this sisterly competition is heating up. So, remember how apparently Kylie Jenner got a $1.4 million Ferrari as a ridiculous “push present” after giving birth to Stormi Webster? It looks like Kim is out to one-up her baby sister with a fancy, pricey new car of her own. Kim Kardashian, for over a decade now, has been the Kardashian — she’s the face of the family and their brand. (While Kris is the mastermind behind most of it) On top of her success as a reality star and a branding icon, her video game for phones that came out a few years ago was a tremendous success. But Kylie Jenner, at an astonishingly young age, is on the rise. Kylie Cosmetics is worth a sicking amount , and is projected to be worth one billion dollars within just a few years. Which of these successful sisters will win the race to a billion dollars? We won’t know who wins the race to the top for years, most likely. But Kylie sure is enjoying her status now. Though it’s not clear where her brand new Ferrari actually came from, it’s believed to be a gift from baby daddy Travis Scott as a thank-you for, you know, giving birth to Stormi. Push presents are normally sentimental jewelry or some sort of home redecoration thing. They’re not really supposed to cost a small fortune, but … Kylie and her family live on another level than the rest of us. There’s one problem with Kylie’s $1.4 million push present … you can’t fit a carseat into it. Whoops. But that’s not why Kylie’s family thinks that it’s ridiculous — they reportedly think that Kylie’s fondness for flaunting her wealth with expensive cars is tacky and childish. Now that she’s a mom (at 20), they hope that she’ll mellow out. At the same time, however, Kim seems to have her eye on the prize. So long as the “prize” means outshining Kylie Jenner’s fancy new car with one of her own. Over the course of several days, including just a matter of hours ago, Kim Kardashian has been pointing out super expensive, fancy, largely impractical cars on her Instagram. She’s written things like: “I want …” and, days later “I want this too …” Does a taste for needlessly expensive vehicles that are jarringly low to the ground (but maybe they don’t care because they’re short anyway?) run in the family? Or is this a competition? Some fans were quick to comment, wondering why in the world Kim would be posting about wanting these particular items when, you know, she could just buy them. But it’s easy to connect the dots. If Kylie really got her car from Travis Scott as a push present, as is widely believed, then Kim buying herself one wouldn’t be a match for Kylie. For Kim to match Kylie, she’d need it to be a push present from Kanye, her own baby daddy. And husband. Of course, some would point out that Kim and Kylie are sisters, who likely have convergent tastes in many areas. There’s so similar that they both had babies within a couple of months of each other. Chicago was Kim’s third and Stormi was Kylie’s first, and Chicago was born via surrogate, but those are just details. So maybe they have similar tastes in cars because they’re similar people. For that matter, maybe they’re both in the makeup business and both wildly successful because they have similarities in their personalities? It can be fun to pit sibling against sibling, but we shouldn’t let that narrative cloud our perspective. We don’t know what’s going on in their minds. Really??? Chicago PD Tickets Black Neighborhoods Overwhelmingly More When It Snows

Stock Image by Getty Snow Tickets In South Chicago Hoods Are Staggering In Comparison To Wealthier Areas Data says the Chicago Police are issuing disproportionate amounts of snow tickets in the Black neighborhood of Englewood where a fist full of complaints to 311 are usual made about snowy sidewalks. In Northern, wealthier neighborhoods in city, where hundreds more complaints are being made, they are seeing fewer tickets. How is that even so?? According to WBEZ Chicago PD is abusing something called the “2 inch rule” in neighborhoods like Englewood. This rule says that if it snows over 2 inches, you can’t stay parked on a main street. But, according to a  Chicago Police Department directive , cops aren’t supposed to issue “2-inch rule” tickets unless city officials declare weather severe enough for “phase two” of the official snow plan to kick in. These cops are just giving tickets without official word of SEVERE weather and poor folks are eating it. Other findings show that these poorer ‘hoods get more tikets for failure to shovel sidewalks. The CPD have yet to comment of the unequivocal amounts of snow tickets being issued around the city.

Blac Chyna to Kim Kardashian: Congrats on the Baby! I’m Still Suing!

For a woman who was just delivered a serious blow in her court battle against the Kardashians, Blac Chyna seems to be in astonishingly good spirits. She’s vowing to keep fighting after her huge setback. But she’s also congratulating Kim and Kanye on the birth of their third child , calling the baby girl a “blessing.” You didn’t miss Kim Kardashian’s new, bizarre baby’s name , right? Kimye’s youngest daughter’s name is Chicago West. ( Chicago West sounds like the name of a fashion line or perhaps like Carmen Sandiego’s apprentice, so … it’s fine) Before the news of the baby girl’s name even broke, The Blast caught up to Blac Chyna and asked what she thought of Kim’s third child being born. Chyna replied: “It’s always a blessing. They deserve blessings.” Some may find it surprising that Chyna could be so chipper about the Kardashians, considering recent developments. So, you know how Blac Chyna is suing the entire Kardashian clan ? She claims that they used their influence to sabotage her reality career when it had scarcely begun, effectively blacklisting her at E! If true, this would mean that the Kardashians cost her not only the money she would have earned through reality TV income, but cash from merchandising and endorsements and appearances. Which is why she’s suing. The Kardashians argue that they didn’t maliciously undercut her career — that she missed out on work because she refused to film scenes with Rob, and even got a restraining order against him. Blac Chyna reportedly hates that argument, and countered that she shouldn’t have lost her job over her fear of Rob . Well, RadarOnline reports that Blac Chyna’s lawsuit against the Kardashians saw a major setback. ““Chyna lost today,” their source claims. “But it is a temporary situation. Chyna is going to fight back.” That’s no surprise. Chyna’s a fighter, clearly. “She is going to go back and try again and try and convince the judge of his error.” What error, you ask? Reportedly, the judge in the case indicated that he’s going to remove both Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner from the lawsuit. This weakens Blac Chyna’s case, we imagine, in two ways. One, because Kris and Kim have deep pockets, and if they’re not the targets of her lawsuit, she can’t be awarded damages directly from them. Two, and we’re just guessing (not legal experts), but one imagines that Blac Chyna will have a harder time arguing that, say, Rob pulled some carefully crafted scheme to sabotage her reality career. Rob is … well, Rob. He’s not exactly an evil genius. But apparently Blac Chyna stands fully poised to convince the judge that Kim and Kris do belong within the scope of her lawsuit. Failing though, though, she’s said to be prepared to amend her lawsuit in such a way that she can still win. Still, though Blac Chyna’s called the Kardashians all sorts of nasty things during the course of her falling out with the family and these legal fights, it’s not a surprise that she’s speaking pleasantly about Chicago’s birth. Blac Chyna’s link to the Kardashians isn’t Rob — it’s Dream. When Chyna talks about Chicago, she’s not just talking about the child of her enemy, she’s talking about the newborn cousin of her own baby daughter. Her feud with the Kardashians is … very complicated. View Slideshow: Blac Chyna and Rob Kardashian: A Turbulent Timeline of Doom

Kim Kardashian Surrogate Salary: Revealed! Paltry!

If you’ve been anywhere near social media this week, then you’re no doubt aware that Kim Kardashian has welcomed her third child . You’re probably also aware that she gave that child a very strange name. Yes, the moniker Chicago West is dominating all other Kardashian news this week for the simple reason that it’s an unusual name for a baby girl, even by Kimye standards. Kim and Kanye would probably appreciate it if most critics would hold their damn tongues, but they’re probably not too upset about the fact that Chicago is dominating the entertainment news cycle. For one thing, Kim and Kanye are of the opinion that everything they do is deserving of the public’s full attention and that’s doubly true when they do something that’s actually newsworthy, such as welcoming a child and naming it after a major American city. And as a bonus, the name distracts from the weird news coming out today about Kim and Kanye’s surrogate: As we reported yesterday, Kim’s surrogate was reported to have been very well-paid for her services. That would make perfect sense, of course, as being a surrogate is a major commitment and Kim and Kanye are very wealthy. Today, however, Radar Online is reporting that the surrogate (who remains anonymous) was paid much, much less than initially thought. The site claims that the surrogate received a mere $68,850 in compensation “for all discomfort, pain, suffering, and inconveniences, for pregnancy and pre-birth child support expenses and post-birth expenses.” It’s a sizable sum, to be sure, but a mere fraction of what was expected as payment from one of the wealthiest couples in entertainment. In addition to the flat fee, Kim and Kanye agreed to cover “obstetrical, nursing, hospital and maternity care, pharmaceutical, pediatrics, or other costs,” as well as covering all “medical expenses, fees, costs and services relating to the pregnancy and the birth of the child.” Generous, sure, but also a standard part of most surrogate agreements. The Wests even went so far as to put a clause in the contract ensuring that they would not be held responsible if, for any reason, the surrogate’s husband was forced to miss work during her pregnancy: “The Intended Parents shall have no responsibility to pay the gestational carrier’s husband’s lost wages under this agreement,”  We should note that none of this comes directly from the surrogate, as according to the terms of her contract, she’s not permitted to speak to the press. The surrogate’s parents spoke on her behalf earlier this week and assured the public that all is well.  “She is doing well,” her mother told Radar Online. “Everything went well. As a matter of fact, she’s at home resting,” said the surrogate’s father, when asked if there were any complications. Both parties declined to offer any further information for fear of giving away their daughter’s identity. An anonymous source says the mother-of-two is happy with the arrangement, as she was never really in it for the money:  “Neither she or her husband have asked for a nickel more from Kim or Kanye” said the source. “They just wanted to bless someone’s family with the gift of a child.” That’s nice and all, but if the family you’re blessing happens to be insanely wealthy, might as well ensure that your own kids are taken care of, right? Just sayin’ … View Slideshow: Kim, Khloe and Kylie: All the Intel on ALL the Babies!

5 Issues For Sens. Harris and Booker To Raise On The Senate Judiciary Committee

D emocratic Senators Kamala Harris of California and New Jersey’s Cory Booker were appointed to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, the The Hill reported. As the first African-American member of the committee since the 1990s, there are a few pressing issues for them to address. SEE ALSO: Illinois Lawsuit Underscores 5 Ways Trump Is Reversing Obama-Era Justice System Reforms Booker vowed to serve as a “check and balance” on President Donald Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions . “The Trump administration has repeatedly demonstrated its hostility to the ideals of civil rights and equal justice for all,” he added. Senate Judiciary Committee — Out: Franken, In: Booker, Harris https://t.co/Dz5uCtnaVG — Axios (@axios) January 9, 2018 Among its several tasks, the Judiciary Committee provides oversight of the Department of Justice and the agencies that report to the department, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The members also consider the president’s judicial nominees. Harris is now the second African-American woman to sit on the committee after former Sen. Carol Moseley Braun , a Democrat from Illinois. Booker is the first Black man to serve on the powerful panel. Here are a few issues that Booker and Harris could give voice to on the committee: 1. Oppose Thomas Farr’s judicial nomination Trump nominated Thomas Farr for a lifetime seat on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina. His nomination has drawn widespread criticism . He has a long history of defending laws that weaken voting rights for African Americans and was part of a scheme by North Carolina’s former GOP Sen. Jesse Helms to intimidate Black voters. Looking forward to hearing Thomas Farr’s answers when @SenKamalaHarris & @CoryBooker hold him accountable for suppressing voters. #StopFarr pic.twitter.com/f9wDbCB1y5 — Let America Vote (@letamericavote) January 9, 2018   2. Restore federal oversight of police reform Under President  Barack Obama , the Department of Justice investigated police departments and used its leverage to reach agreements to reform departments that had patterns of racially biased policing. Sessions has directed his department in a  memo  to review those agreements to ensure they align with Trump’s law-and-order policy. Ferguson is undermining Jeff Sessions' argument against DOJ-led police reform https://t.co/2ZRlnzcF8N pic.twitter.com/ZKkDSykEIE — HuffPost BlackVoices (@blackvoices) October 30, 2017   3. End excessive court fines on poor people Sessions revoked 25 Justice Department guidance documents on a range of federal laws. One of them was from President Obama’s DOJ that called on courts to stop trapping poor people in cycles of fines, debt and jail. https://t.co/HPLCStepfC attorney Jeff sessions his rescinded a obama-era law that prevented cities from going after blacks and other poor people over excessive court fines. — The Observation Man (@William53604792) December 26, 2017   4. Block voter suppression efforts Republican controlled states continue to employ a myriad of schemes to suppress voter turnout among racial minorities, poor people and other groups that tend to support Democrats. Those efforts include cutbacks on early voting, ID requirements and banning ex-felon from casting a ballot. On Tuesday, new concerns were raised after a federal judge lifted a decades-old ban on the Republican National Committee from engaging in voter intimidation. In 1981 RNC used off-duty police officers with badges & weapons to monitor polls in black & Latino areas of NJ. Court order blocking these voter suppression efforts just expired. This is very bad news for voting rights https://t.co/LGYJv7sj9Y — Ari Berman (@AriBerman) January 9, 2018   5. Oppose efforts to renew the War on Drugs Sessions has signaled a return to the racially biased “war on drugs” policy that led to mass incarceration that will include stepping up drug and gun prosecutions, as well as enforcing mandatory minimum sentences. He revoked Obama-era policies on marijuana Thursday that is widely viewed as a major step in that direction. The war on drugs didn’t stop drug usage; it just ruined a lot of lives. Jeff Sessions is reviving it because he believes in using the criminal justice system as an instrument of racial and economic control of poor people and brown people. https://t.co/XRd8OldE2N — Rep.
