Let’s be honest: Nobody watches the People’s Choice Awards for the actual awards. As awards season proper kicks off it’s a populist popularity contest, a loose warm-up to this weekend’s Golden Globes, a pit stop on the tour of red carpet photo ops for celebrities and TV stars and actors with upcoming movies to pimp. But events like this give us lovely little gifts, random social snapshots that peek behind the curtain of celebrity. Last night they gave us Hunger Games tingles. Cute coupledom. And, perhaps best of all, Robert Pattinson having a ball with Betty White . Who was the genius People’s Choice Awards planner that seated Pattinson next to the erstwhile Golden Girl in the front row? What did the Twilight star and the bubbly octogenarian have to talk about during commercial breaks? (Perhaps this ?) Could the casualwear-clad Pattinson have looked any more like a kid tagging along with his grandma to a fancy dinner for grownups? WHAT DID BETTY THINK OF RPATTZ’S NEW HAIRCUT?? I kid, I kid. It’s the single most adorable photo to come from last night and I love thinking that the two became instant besties and exchanged cell numbers on the spot. Pop star nabbed trophies for Favorite Song, Favorite Female Artist and Favorite Music Video. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Steve Granitz/ FilmMagic Katy Perry may not have been in the house for the 2012 People’s Choice Awards on Wednesday night, but the five-time winner certainly appreciated all the trophies from afar. Perry had been up for seven awards and managed to take home five of them at the fan-voted awards show, hosted by “The Big Bang Theory” leading lady Kaley Cuoco. So, what did Perry win? She nabbed Favorite TV Guest Star for her cameo on “How I Met Your Mother,” Favorite Female Artist, Favorite Song of the Year for “E.T” featuring Kanye West, Favorite Music Video for “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” and Favorite Tour Headliner. “THANK U to every1 who voted for me for the @peopleschoice tonight! We won so many!” she tweeted . “Now I need to get more books 2 successfully display them!” After her divorce from Russell Brand had been confirmed, Perry later revealed that she’d skip the awards show . She has been lying low since the New Year’s announcement that she and her husband of one year would be parting ways. But she wasn’t the only absent winner excited for all the love from her fans. Taylor Swift was home in Music Town when she nabbed the prize for Favorite Country Artist. “Thank you so much for my People’s Choice Award! Favorite Country Artist! PARTY!!!” she tweeted from her home in Nashville. “Seriously- thank you for voting.” Other big winners of the night included Emma Stone, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” and Demi Lovato, who not only took home the trophy for Favorite Pop Artist but also performed her song “Give Your Heart a Break” during the show. My name is Claire, I’m from Ontario, Canada. I met Justin Bieber on August 7th, 2011 at the Teen Choice Awards in Los Angeles, California. My family and I took a summer vacation to LA to visit my aunt, uncle, and two little cousins. A few days before we were getting ready to go home, my uncle told me that he had gotten free VIP passes to the Teen Choice Awards on the day before we were leaving for my mom, my aunt, and myself. I was so excited! There were tons of people I couldn’t believe I was going to meet. When we finally got to Universal City Walk, where the awards were being held, I headed straight to the red carpet to see if there was anybody there that I recognized. I saw Shay Mitchell, Raven Symone, Joe Jonas, Taylor Lautner, and so many other cool people! I even got a picture with Alfredo Flores! Finally I saw Justin Bieber walking down the carpet, and he was nice enough to talk to every one of his fans. He came to me and my friend and said hi, then I went to hand my friend my camera so he could take a picture of the two of us, when Justin said, “Hold on! I’ll take the picture!” It was so nice of him to offer to do that. On Saturday, she took to Twitter to open up publicly for the first time since the split. “I am so grateful for all the love and support I’ve had from people around the world,” she wrote. “You guys have made my heart happy again.” In another tweet minutes later, she addressed the tabloid chatter that has been swirling around since Brand filed for divorce in Los Angeles on December 30. “Concerning the gossip, I want to be clear that NO ONE speaks for me,” she said, “Not a blog, magazine, ‘close sources’ or my family.” See a timeline of Katy Perry and Russell Brand’s relationship. The tweets come days before Perry is set to make her first public appearance at the People’s Choice Awards on Wednesday [January 11] where she’s up for a number of awards.
