Paramount Pictures debuted Katy Perry’s “Part of Me” trailer for her 3-D concert movie Tuesday night. The trailer offers a glimpse of what audiences can expect from the film, in theaters July 5. The movie gives fans a peek into the “Firework” singer’s personal life . When Perry sat down with MTV News, she said, “Literally, this film is basically like you’re seeing it from my best friend-buddy perspective.” Perry’s always been open with her fans, interacting with them on Twitter and holding meet-and-greets at every show. But the trailer reveals a side of Perry that’s sure to be new to fans. To show you what we mean, here are five key scenes from the trailer. Be Prepared As a commentator says, “She outworks everyone.” There are shots of Perry at the gym, trying on a costume at a fitting, rehearsing her dance moves and testing the wires and ropes for stage stunts. When fans arrive at the arena for a concert, they see the final production, but not all the hard work that went into putting the show together. From the looks of the trailer, audiences will gain a new respect for Perry as they see just how hard she works to give a stellar performance. “Marriage Over” After the words “Marriage Over” flash into view via a newspaper headline, there’s a heartbreaking scene of Perry looking defeated as she’s hunched over her dressing-room table. It shows that while she may work hard at international superstardom, at the end of the day, she’s human and emotional hardships affect her just like the rest of us. We commend Perry for sharing such a personal time in her life with her fans. She’s a Firework The next scene of Perry shows her getting out of a car for a red-carpet event. She has overcome her failed marriage and moved on with her career. The moment is inspirational as Perry continues to take the stage and perform regardless of what’s going on in her personal life. Her strength is sure to leave an impression on viewers. The Long Journey In between scenes of old music videos from the beginning of her career, we learn that Perry wasn’t always the California princess we know and love today. She grew up in a strict Christian home and her performances were limited to church, but she continued following her dreams. After they finally seemed to be within reach, the label she signed with dropped her. We see a younger Perry pouring her heart into her music as she records a song, only to look defeated afterwards as she says in a voiceover, “I was going through some depressing dark times, but it’s a journey.” Embracing Perry’s “Weirdness” We were hoping to see some behind-the-scenes footage of Perry and her spontaneity, and it looks like our wish came true! “Thank you so much for believing in my weirdness,” Perry yells to the audience. She says her goal when she’s performing is “just to make people smile.” What follows is a montage of Perry posing with fans (one of whom is dressed up as her nerdy alter ego, Kathy Beth Terry), sticking her tongue out at the camera and busting out some awkward dance moves. In ‘Twilight’ Tuesday, we ponder the success of ‘Grey,’ which began as ‘Twilight’ fan fiction. James’ steamy novel, “50 Shades of Grey,” and its ever-expanding fanbase of mostly female readers. The novel, which is out in paperback Tuesday (April 3), started out as “Twilight” fan fiction; as such, it has several elements that lend themselves to comparison with Stephenie Meyer’s YA saga. First, there is the protagonist, insecure and naive beauty Anastasia Steele, who doesn’t know she’s attractive until she meets Christian Grey, a controlling older man with a magnetic personality. Apparently James took Bella and Edward from Meyer’s world and placed them a few years in the future in non-paranormal-influenced Seattle; she called the book “Master of the Universe” online. “Shades of Grey” is hitting all the notes that Meyer’s series hit when it entered the pop culture zeitgeist. It’s a New York Times best-seller, will soon be a feature film and has been dubbed “mommy porn.” Yes, I know that “Twilight” isn’t “mommy porn” and that “Grey” isn’t simply a very adult version of “Twilight,” but the similarities are there. So what does this mean for the publishing industry and the fan-fiction community at large? In this week’s “Twilight” Tuesday, let’s explore the increasing popularity of fan fiction. First off, for the uninitiated, a lot of fanfic is racy. Like NC-17 and XXX-rated racy, so as much as I want to I can’t post excerpts here. Slash fic, stories that feature same-sex relationships between two characters, can be particularly explicit. And though those tales probably won’t make it to store shelves, the idea of an Edward and Jacob or Edward and Jasper romance is pretty entertaining. “Twilight” author Meyer seems to have mixed feelings on the subject, but she has admitted to enjoying a few authors and entertained an alternate universe of sorts herself for “Twilight” in a project she calls “Breaking Down.” “In the beginning I hadn’t heard of it. … I couldn’t read the ones that had the characters in character,” she once said during an interview with Twifans.com . “It freaked me out. There was one about ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Twilight’ that was hilarious. And then there was one that was about a girl who was starring as Bella in the movie and that was funny.” Meyer’s “Breaking Down” was a crutch to help her get through finishing “Breaking Dawn,” a place where she could let loose with outrageous scenarios for her mostly straight and narrow characters. “We came up with an alternate ‘Breaking Dawn’ called ‘Breaking Down.’ It was awesome!” she said. “Complete spiraling downward and destruction in Bella Swan’s life and everyone around her.” Naturally, Meyer didn’t publish that alternate “Twi”-verse, but there are other cases of famous authors who began their careers writing fanfic; take Cassandra Clare, who wrote a popular spin on “Harry Potter” called “The Draco Trilogy” long before she came up with “The Mortal Instruments.” We could also count Seth Grahame-Smith’s best-seller “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” as a form of fanfic, along with the various “Pride and Prejudice”-inspired books like “Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife” and “Mr. Darcy’s Diary: A Novel.” Authors who have negative opinions of fanfic make the argument that they own their characters and that aspiring authors should come up with original work. So where do we draw the line, and more importantly, should it be drawn? As long as we’re getting more people to read, does it matter? Timmy, Timmy, Timmy… “Glee” star Dianna Agron is in the middle of a love triangle involving actor Sebastian Stan and NFL quarterback Tim Tebow — who just signed today with the New York Jets — that seems straight out of a scene from the Fox hit drama series. Blond beauty Agron, 25, has dated Stan, 28, on and off for about a year, but Tebow has told Agron that he’s smitten with her. MTV News’ Rya Backer reunites with band members, who say, ‘We haven’t even hit our stride.’ By Rya Backer GroupLove Photo: MTV News To spend time with Grouplove is to spend time with great friends you didn’t even know you had — or, in my case, two friends I had and lost touch with, only to link back up and see them unchanged (grown and happier, even) in their shared next chapter. See, I went to college with the band’s guitarist, Andrew Wessen, and therefore also spent time with his best friend, drummer Ryan Rabin. Reuniting with the pair alongside their new friends did not feel strained or, well, like work. The five members of Grouplove (also including Hannah Hooper, Christian Zucconi and the very bearded Sean Gadd) met at an artists’ retreat Wessen’s brother co-founded in Crete, Greece. Immediately uniting over their love of creating music, the five separated upon the end of their stay. But their creative bond was only beginning. So, when Hooper, Zucconi and Gadd visited Rabin and Wessen in their native L.A., the five decided to retreat to Rabin’s basement for a bit of what they did best. Rabin explained, “We decided one day — we were bored, it was raining or something — to make some music.” “It was sunny, actually,” the soft-spoken Zucconi chimed in. “Well, we were just bored, then,” Rabin responded, laughing. And so began the makings of a band then called (the decidedly un-Googleable) Group. They’re now one major-label signing and iPod commercial deep, but the band said they’ve only just begun. As for where Wessen sees himself, and the band, in five years, he said, “In all honesty, we haven’t even hit our stride.” Rabin chimed in: “We’ve only been together — not even making music, just friends — for a couple years. Even though it’s nonstop and we’re always working, it still feels like a honeymoon phase. American Idol executives have reportedly offered a bit of advice to Colton Dixon, and it’s not about his pitch or his song choice or his weekly on-stage outfits. The season 11 finalist told Today.com that producers warned him about coming across as overly religion online, fearing this would alienate a segment of viewerso. “When we first started the Twitter and Facebook stuff, they said beware of political and religious tweets,” Dixon said. “Just because it can turn off voters or whatever. But, you know, being a Christian is who I am. It is a part of me musically. It is what I want to do after the show – go into Christian music.” Dixon has found himself in a couple Twitter wars as a result of his open views, however. One user recently suggested the crooner “can’t Tebow his way to a win,” referencing the Denver Broncos quarterback who led his team to the NFL playoffs admits controversy of his frequent references to God and post-game prayer celebrations. “I don’t follow Tebow,” Dixon Tweeted in response. “I follow a guy named Jesus. I’m just trusting His plans. Whatever that may be.” In the end, of course, Dixon and all contestants will mostly be judged on their ability.
