Heavy D: He Did His Own Thang

We reflect on late hip-hop legend’s career and impact on the next generation. By Kelley L. Carter Heavy D Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images There was this odd but super cool sound that rolled off Heavy D ‘s tongue that we all tried to emulate. It was his melodic calling card; it was the key thing he inserted into Heavy D & the Boyz ‘ “We Got Our Own Thang.” Its significance was cemented in pop culture when he guest-starred in a 1989 episode of one of the era’s hottest sitcoms, “A Different World.” He was set to be a featured performer at a fundraiser on the show, and the pompous, pretentious Whitley wasn’t having it. “I’ll tell you what lacks melody is that diddly diddly diddly diddly diddly dee,” she drawled, displaying her disgust for hip-hop, completely unaware that she was, in fact, bemoaning Heavy D himself. Heav, playing a caricature of himself (and an old junior high friend of Dwayne Wayne), laughed and shrugged it off. We all chuckled with the laugh track as Whitley realized her mistake and Heavy showed her the right way to do the thing that had all of us — in the ‘hood, in the ‘burbs and in the sticks — trying to copy him every time we heard one of his wicked, uptempo tracks. We next see him onstage, doing that infamous Heavy D shake, performing the track “Somebody for Me,” the single that questioned — and longed for — a woman’s affections for the man who dubbed himself the Overweight Lover. Heavy D, born Dwight Arrington Myers, died Tuesday (November 8) at an L.A. hospital. He was a young 44. TMZ is reporting that a 911 call was placed from his Beverly Hills home around 11:25 a.m. PT to report an unconscious male on the walkway. When help arrived, the entertainer was conscious and speaking and was taken to the hospital. He died shortly thereafter. Heav was that kind of touchable performer. We felt comfortable with his Overweight Lover nickname — he was the big guy who could move. His size never stopped him. He moved in ways that intimidated the slimmest dude in the crowd. He was smooth, dapper and celebrated the around-the-way-girl through song; his music helped soundtrack 10th-grade dances near and far, and his colorful, danceable and at times sensitive brand of hip-hop clearly proved to be wildly influential to new-millennium household names like Diddy or Drake. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who came up after Heavy D that doesn’t cite him as an influence — and if they didn’t say it out loud, their showmanship certainly was a giveaway. He brought professionalism to live hip-hop shows, and because he fancied a variety of music and musical stylings, his shows were thought-out, deliberate and defined all that New Jack Swing embodied. Heavy brought the bounce to hip-hop and his smooth delivery made every woman look at big boys with new eyes. He was sexy — so were his lyrics, and so was his style. He was one of few rappers to collaborate with Michael Jackson (he rapped on “Jam”), and we all applauded when he linked up with Janet Jackson for an “Alright” remix. His death is tragic for a number of reasons. Until last month, we hadn’t seen Heavy perform live onstage in 15 years. When he hit the stage back in October for the BET Hip Hop Awards , he showed the young guys that he could still swing with the new New Jacks. He also showed off an amazing 135-pound weight loss, but his hip-hop moniker was still fitting for a guy who gave so much to a musical genre that continues to shape pop culture. Even past his hit-producing hip-hop prime, Heavy continued to be a force in entertainment . He’d often dabbled in film and television, and most recently. we saw him in an episode of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and the just-released “Tower Heist.” Some of hip-hop’s biggest luminaries tweeted their affections for the rapper Tuesday. It was undeniable what he brought to the genre. He was one of the biggest who ever did it — and he got there because he did his own thang. Share your memories of Heavy D on Facebook. ‘Expendables 2’ Stuntmen Involved In On-Set Accident ID’d

Following the death of one stuntman and the injury of another, the film’s production company releases a statement clarifying previous reports. By Kevin P. Sullivan Sylvester Stallone in “The Expendables” Photo: Lionsgate Nu Image/Millennium Films has identified the stuntman who died on the Bulgarian set of “The Expendables 2” on October 27. Stuntman Kun Lieu was killed in an on-set explosion . The production company behind the all-star action sequel released a statement Tuesday (November 1) clarifying previous reports and updating the status of the second stuntman injured in the explosion. The second stuntman, Nuo Sun, was also injured in the explosion and was reportedly in critical condition when reports of the accident hit late last Thursday. A new statement released by Nu/Image Millennium Films updated his status, and Sun is now in stable condition in a hospital in Munich, where he was transported to undergo treatment by specialists. The statement also corrected claims made by Bulgarian newspapers that inaccurately identified the stuntmen as the doubles for Sylvester Stallone and Jet Li and asserted that the those stuntmen were nowhere near the set at the time of the incident. The production company also reconfirmed previous reports that neither the stars nor director Simon West were present for the accident. The full statement from Nu Image/Millennium Film follows: “Our deepest condolences go to the family of Kun Lieu. His passing is tragic. Our sympathies also go to Nuo Sun, who was seriously injured as a result of the same explosion. We have been informed his condition has stabilized. He has been transported to Munich, Germany, where he is receiving top medical care from the best specialists,” the statement reads. “Regrettably, Bulgarian language newspapers have incorrectly reported that stunt doubles for Jet Li and Sylvester Stallone were involved in the accident. This is absolutely false and inaccurate. At the time of the accident neither Li’s or Stallone’s stuntmen were on or near the Second Unit set, nor were any of the film’s main actors, director Simon West or any of the Main Unit crew. “Only Second Unit filming has been temporarily suspended and will resume shortly. The filmmakers continue to work with authorities investigating this accident. Main Unit production has not been interrupted and continues as scheduled.” “Expendables 2” is scheduled to hit theaters next August and stars Stallone, Li, Jason Statham , Bruce Willis , Arnold Schwarzenegger , Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme . Girls’ Generation Dish On Hazards Of Making ‘The Boys’ Video

‘A pigeon comes out and that pigeon flies all over the place …,’ Korean girl group member Jessica explains. By Christina Garibaldi Girls’ Generation Photo: MTV News The phenomenon that is Girls’ Generation is making its mark in the United States. Last week, the Korean pop girl group released their latest music video, “The Boys,” and with 13 million YouTube views in just over a week, it’s clear that fans love it. On Monday, all nine Girls’ Generation members stopped by MTV News and told us that they are still in shock that so many fans have checked out their latest effort. “We have never expected many people to view our videos,” Sooyung said. “So we are surprised and would like to have more chances to meet our fans in other countries.” The Teddy Riley-produced song is the first single off their third studio album, The Boys, which was released worldwide on October 19, the same day their video was released. The sexy, upbeat video shows off the girls’ dance moves, highly stylized wardrobe and over-the-top set designs. “All the sets were supposed to portray water, sand, and roses … somewhat environmental,” Tiffany explained. “It turned out so well, so we were all very pleased.” In one of the scenes, the girls walk in slow motion through a rain shower of rose petals, but shooting that particular scene was not as glamorous as it looked. “It was really hard to keep our eyes open during the rose petal scenes because they would use the same rose petals over and over, so I don’t know how they got rid of the dust, but there was a lot of dust,” Tiffany said. Dust wasn’t the only thing Girls’ Generation had to watch out for on the shoot. The girls recruited a 10th member to join their group for the video, which unfortunately didn’t turn out as planned. “There was a pigeon. A pigeon comes out and that pigeon flies all over the place and guess what?” Jessica laughed while explaining the pigeon’s “accident.” “It actually happened on the collarbone of Sunny’s.” “Luckily she has short hair,” Tiffany added. “But it was funnier because Sunny didn’t know that it happened.” “I actually told her,” Jessica said. “I’m like, what is that?” And of course, with nine girls on the set of a music video, you can bet there were a whole lot of laughs. “There are scenes with all the lights off, like the silhouette scenes,” Tiffany said. “We were screaming and laughing while doing the scenes because you don’t see our faces.” Girls’ Generation’s first U.S. maxi-single will be released on November 19. Frankie Jonas Takes Us Halloween Costume Shopping

Jonas Brothers’ little bro talks about his upcoming role on ‘R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour: The Series.’ By Jocelyn Vena Frankie Jonas Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Frankie Jonas may be the smallest of the Jonas brothers, but he certainly isn’t short on personality. Frankie, like his three older brothers before him, is trying his hand at show business and will appear this weekend on “R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour: The Series.” Being that it is the season for all things creepy, the always swagged-out Frankie decided to bring MTV News along as he searched for the just-right Halloween costume. “What we’re doing here today, we are looking at the costumes and we’re going costume shopping,” he told MTV News at Abracadabra. “Which I’m really happy about, because I need to get a head-start on my costume.” Jonas picked two costumes — a zombie and Chucky from “Child’s Play” — and he explained why, of all the costumes in the store, those made his final cut. “I chose the zombie because I was a zombie for two years in a row … zombies, they’re like the full-on. Everyone loves zombies,” he said. “Zombies are the base of Halloween, ’cause you get dead, you get living and you get creepy. “I like Chucky, ’cause it’s really, like, no offense to Chucky, but he’s kind of cheesy,” the 11-year-old continued. “But that’s what I like about him. I love old, cheesy horror movies. I love horror movies. My two favorites are probably ‘Sweeney Todd’ and the original ‘Nightmare on Elm Street.’ ” His episode of the series, titled “Pumpkinhead,” will air Saturday on the Hub, and like any seasoned pro, Jonas is keeping the details a big secret. “It’s scary funny, but my episode full-on creeps you out. It’s like if you mixed together intense with, like, super scary and then a little bit of comedy, and then you get [my episode],” he explained. “My character, I’m not scary, but I do things that make things scary. I don’t want to give too much away but everyone’s going to love it.” Will you check out Frankie’s gig? Let us know in the comments!

Michael Myers: ‘Halloween’ To MTV’s Killer Halloween

Horror-movie icon ushered in the modern era of slasher films — but is he the best cinematic killer of all time? By Kevin P. Sullivan Michael Myers in “Halloween” Photo: Dimension Films We’re just about halfway through MTV’s Killer Halloween , and the competition is just heating up in the battle to find out which movie murderer tops them all. So far, we’ve profiled Freddy , Jason , Leatherface , Chucky and Ghostface , but now we look at the man who ushered in the modern era of slashers. Which horror-movie baddie has the best personality? Make your pick in our MTV Movies Blog poll! Michael Myers Occupation : Homicidal boy, homicidal adult Weapons : Knife, inability to ever freaking die Archenemy : His family, his psychiatrist, anyone who gets in the way of him killing his family and his psychiatrist Profile : Michael Myers was a bit of a prodigy in the ways of serial killing, changing the game even as a young boy. Pre-teen Michael may have been the first to don a mask — a creepy clown one for his first murder — and go after the babysitter, his sister Judith. He spent the remainder of his youth in an institution for the mentally disturbed under the close observation of Dr. Sam Loomis. After Michael escaped, stealing a mask, jumpsuit and knife from a hardware store, movie serials have never been the same. The target of most of Michael’s deadly attention has been his surviving sister, Laurie, the lead played by Jamie Lee Curtis in the first two films and “Halloween: H20” and Scout Taylor-Compton in the Rob Zombie remakes. The early films simply focused on Michael’s obsession with finding his long-lost baby sister, but later in the series, the true origin of Michael as an embodiment of pure evil added a supernatural element to the villain. There has never been too much to Michael Myers’ tactics. He stalks. He walks. He kills. His style of murder will be remembered for a number of reasons. His mask, an old William Shatner “Star Trek” mask painted white, has become a horror icon. His slow gait and silent disposition directly inspired dozens of imitators — Jason Voorhees, most famously. Modern slasher films owe a debt to Michael Myers and his creator John Carpenter, whose work has affected the genre for generations. Where do you think Michael Myers falls in the scope of horror-movie psychopaths? Let us know in the comments! Chucky Brings ‘Child’s Play’ To MTV’s Killer Halloween

How does this tiny terror rank among classic horror-movie murderers like Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees? Vote in our poll! By Kara Warner Chucky from “Child’s Play” Photo: United Artists How do we love horror-movie villains? Let us count the ways via MTV’s Killer Halloween , an in-depth competition in which we ask you, the best and brightest fans, to determine who is the best and scariest movie murderer. Head over to our Movies Blog poll to rank the killers’ weapons of choice! So far, we’ve provided the vital stats of big, bad men Freddy Krueger , Jason Voorhees and Leatherface . Now, it’s time to move on to a smaller, but equally vicious, killer: Chucky from “Child’s Play.” Charles Lee “Chucky” Ray Occupation : Serial killer, voodoo practitioner, plastic doll Weapons : Whatever he has at his disposal, voodoo knife Archenemy : Grownups, fire, people who won’t let him take over their bodies Profile : Chucky’s story has all the fixings for horror-film flights of fancy. He, Charles Lee Ray, is a serial killer and voodoo practitioner who manages to transfer his soul into a “Good Guy” doll after he is fatally shot by a police detective. Chucky ends up in the hands of Andy Barclay, who very soon regrets the day his mother brought home the redheaded, freckled doll, as the pint-sized terror resumes his murderous ways. As is custom for horror-movie antagonists, Chucky manages to survive all the attempts at ending his “life” — including being set on fire and shot — in order to terrorize more victims in “Child’s Play 2,” “Child’s Play 3,” “Bride of Chucky” and “Seed of Chucky.” Once again, we turn to horror movie expert Brian Collins, the dedicated man behind Horror Movie a Day , to explain Chucky’s long-lasting appeal. “Chucky is awesome because in addition to going after Andy or whoever in order to get a human body, he tends to kill a lot of jerks: mean teachers, sadistic Army barbers, even Britney Spears. So, there’s a little more variety to his victims than the usual anonymous knife fodder in the “Friday the 13th” or “Nightmare on Elm Street” movies,” he explained. “Plus, he swore a lot. Swearing toys are always funny.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Child’s Play.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
